Protecting the mental and physical health of the miners trapped in the collapsed copper and gold mine has become a major preoccupation of Chilean authorities, especially now that its clear they could remain in their dark, hot, humid quarters for up to four months or more. "The major threat is despair," said Beach, also a professor at Dominican University in River Forest, Ill. The challenge is to make sure their mental state doesnt deteriorate to the point where they cannot do the things that will keep them intellectually and socially engaged over the long months. But now, Crist says he "misspoke" in that interview. His campaign sent out a statement Friday afternoon clarifying Crists position on the healthcare law. A 203,000-dollar grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council is helping the team develop the technology, which they think could be ideal for islands, deserts and even on submarines. Plus, municipalities already spend a ton of money and energy removing urea from wastewater, so incorporating a system like this could help reduce those costs. The prototypes exact components arent being publicized, but the team is planning to have a demonstration system ready next year. Urine-powered fuel cells to offer pee power to people researchers have figured out a way to make the worlds first urine-powered fuel cells. Chemistry postdocs Shanwen Tao and Rong Lan at Heriot-Watt Universitys School of Engineering and Physical Sciences in Edinburgh are turning pee into electricity and clean water with a prototype fuel cell system. While fuel cells usually rely on flammable hydrogen gas or toxic methanol to generate electricity, Tao and Lans cheaper prototype relies instead on urea, Urea, also called "carbamide," has several advantages as a potential fuel source-its abundant, non-toxic, relatively straightforward to transport and rich in nitrogen, The Carbamide Power System prototype can break urea or urine from humans or animals down into water, nitrogen and CO2, and also produce electricity at the same time. Jefferson used that phrase in an 1802 letter to the Danbury (Conn.) Baptist Association. According to Barton, Jefferson went on to add that the "wall" was meant to be "one directional," protecting the church from the state but not the other way around, and, furthermore, that it was intended to keep "Christian principles in government." Recession may have pushed US birth rate to new lowclipped by: Efrain AlvaradoThe U.S. birth rate has dropped for the second year in a row, and experts think the wrenching recession led many people to put off having children. The 2009 birth rate also set a record: lowest in a century. Births fell 2.6 percent last year even as the population grew, numbers released Friday by the National Center for Health Statistics show. "Its a good-sized decline for one year. Every month is showing a decline from the year before," said Stephanie Ventura, the demographer who oversaw the report. The birth rate, which takes into account changes in the population, fell to 13.5 births for every 1,000 people last year. Thats down from 14.3 in 2007 and way down from 30 in 1909, when it was common for people to have big families. "It doesnt matter how you look at it ? fertility has declined," Ventura said. Cairn Energy announced this week that it had found evidence "indicative of an active hydrocarbon system" off Greenland. The news comes in the middle of a bidding round for oil and gas exploration licences there. The US Geological Survey estimated in 2008 that the region contains approximately 90 billion barrels of technically recoverable oil, but producing the stuff would combine the extreme challenges of deepwater drilling, extreme cold, and ice. Any accident would be massively harder to deal with than Deepwater Horizon because of the countrys remoteness. News of the Cairn discovery, while popular with many in Greenland who hope that the revenues might help them win full independence from Denmark, was met by dismay from environmental groups; Greenpeace sent its ship the Esperanza to protest. On Wednesday, BP, whose safety reputation is now in the toilet, said it would not take part in this licensing round, no doubt to the great relief of the rest of the industry. Two years ago, ecologists Erle Ellis and Navin Ramankutty at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, released a map of the world?s biological areas, traditionally known as biomes. Similar maps were found on science classroom walls across the land, but theirs was different in one very fundamental way: They updated the definition of biome to reflect how human beings used the land. Ellis and Ramankutty said this was much more relevant to the 21st century, with more than six billion people using more of Earth?s water, energy and matter than any other species, than classical biomes that didn?t account for humanity?s influence. They called their newly-defined areas ?anthromes,? short for anthropological biomes. Some 50 years ago, the renowned linguist Roman Jakobson pointed out a crucial fact about differences between languages in a pithy maxim: ?Languages differ essentially in what they must convey and not in what they may convey.? This maxim offers us the key to unlocking the real force of the mother tongue: if different languages influence our minds in different ways, this is not because of what our language allows us to think but rather because of what it habitually obliges us to think about. The comment period on this proposed ban has just opened and will last until Oct. 31. The EPA must accept or reject the petition by Nov. 1, the day before the midterm elections. As if Democrats don?t have enough troubles, the Obama administration risks provoking all those townsfolk bitterly clinging to their guns. There are a couple of problems, the first being that when Congress passed the law it specifically exempted ammunition. So what the EPA proposes to do is illegal. The second is that there is no scientific basis for restricting lead ammunition on the basis of protecting the health of humans or wildlife. In a letter to EPA Director Jackson, NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox pointed out that the EPA was trying to circumvent the law and congressional intent by dividing ammunition into its constituent parts and then trying to ban the parts. ![]() And bullets made out of material other than lead are usually considered armor piercing and are therefore illegal. Do the math? (IBD)- The U.S. Supreme Court says Americans have an individual right to keep and bear arms. The EPA says the bullets for those guns may be banned as an environmental hazard. The endless power grabs by the federal leviathan know no boundaries of law, science or even common sense. The Environmental Protection Agency of Lisa Jackson is seriously considering a petition by the Center for Biological Diversity, a leading anti-hunting group, to ban all traditional lead ammunition under the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) of 1976. If the EPA approves the petition, the result will be a ban on all ammunition containing lead-core components. Bullets made of material other than lead are often considered armor-piercing by law and are banned. So this amounts to gun control by stealth. Ariyawathi, 49, told them her Saudi employer inflicted the injuries on her as a punishment because she found it difficult to communicate with those in the household. "She said her employer heated the nails and then hammered them into her body," Gajadeera told AFP. "The nails were in her arms, legs and forehead." He said the woman could not have driven the nails herself. USA Today, the countrys second largest newspaper by circulation, has been hit hard in recent years by declines in advertising and circulation. Ad revenue declined 29% in 2009, though the declines have moderated recently. The restructuring is designed to de-emphasize the print paper and reorganize its staff into larger groups focused on a variety of distribution channels including the Web, mobile devices and tablets. USA Today also will increase collaboration between the news and business staff in an effort to make the paper more attractive to marketers. Man laughed when torture charges read to him in courtclipped by: shaorclippers remarks: I guess this is one sick individual. Torture case suspect appears agitated in court![]() CALGARY - The suspect in a gruesome torture case that at least one investigator has labelled the worst he has ever seen appeared agitated and angry at his first court hearing Friday. LaFortune was starved, burned and had parts of his tongue and lips cut off before being dumped at a hospital in Regina earlier this year. Paxton initially appeared calm at the hearing, but as the judge began to read the charges against him, he began to run his fingers through his hair over and over. He rocked back and forth with his arms folded and occasionally laughed. The 26-year-old LaFortune weighed just 87 pounds, down from his usual weight of 245, when he was left there on April 16. His family has said that in addition to extensive physical injuries, he suffered brain trauma and amnesia. police confirmed earlier in the week that they are investigating the possibility that Paxton may have other alleged victims, but wouldnt elaborate on why they think that. That situation stinks, and it happens all the time. More and more automakers are attempting to get a leg up on the competition by releasing vehicles from their 2011 lineups early. While that can mean great discounts on current-year models, the savings only make sense on cars that hardly change from one year to the next. Redesigned ones are usually worth waiting for. To avoid buying a car that you?ll want to kick yourself for later, you?ll need to check out how the car you want is expected to change in 2011. What you learn may save you from feeling duped. "For too long, this country has wandered in darkness, and we have wandered in darkness in periods from the beginning," Beck said as he opened his "Restoring Honor" rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. "We have had moments of brilliance and moments of darkness. But this country has spent far too long worried about scars and thinking about the scars and concentrating on the scars. Today, we are going to concentrate on the good things in... more by Beck - 7 hours ago - Washington Post (280 occurrences) |

Incoming independent MP Andrew Wilkie has described the justification for the war in Afghanistan as "one of the great lies of the election campaign".
Mr Wilkie has claimed victory in the Tasmanian seat of Denison, but he will wait a few more days before declaring who he will support in a hung parliament.

"Both Labor Party members and Coalition members continue to perpetuate this nonsense, that were only there to fight terrorists to prevent them coming to Australia, to prevent them committing terrorist attacks here."
"They at the moment are trying to implement a policy put in place by, I think, incompetent politicians and this continuing lie about why we are there," he said.
"But I do know peace will only come to Afghanistan when foreign troops are out and I think they should get out as soon as possible."
He says he did originally support the invasion in November 2001 and he still backs Australian soldiers "100 per cent", but there is no need to stay.

400 Year Old Letter Reveals Lost Language
clipped by: celestialdancer
Penned by an unknown Spanish author and lost for four centuries, the battered piece of paper was pulled from the ruins of an ancient Spanish colonial church in 2008.
But a team of scientists and linguists has only recently revealed the importance of the words written on the flip side of the letter.
"Even though [the letter] doesnt tell us a whole lot, it does tell us about a language that is very different from anything weve ever known?and it suggests that there may be a lot more out there," said project leader Jeffrey Quilter, an archaeologist at Harvard?s Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology.
But it was clearly a unique tongue, and likely one of two known only by the mention of their names in contemporary texts: Quingnam and Pescadora?"language of the fishers."
