The Daily Telegraph newspaper in Sydney reports that damning internal reports reveal the cash crisis is so desperate performers lives are at risk from ancient stage machinery because there is no money to update it. A senior Opera House source told the paper that government action is needed to keep the venue operating, the ABC reports. The source says the reports indicate that if something radical isnt done, the famous venue will have to close. Opera House chief executive Richard Evans has confirmed it may have to close permanently if state and federal governments do not give $800 million to replace stage machinery. The reason? Presidents have to juggle a number of pressing issues at a time, and what with America being in a recession, Obama simply cant afford to give sole focus to this disaster. Too bad the AP wasnt so understanding in 2005 when President Bush was perceived as being detached from the suffering in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Back then, the wire service was quick to mention vacation plans and peddle accusations of the federal government not caring about the poor. The next day, sitting on the back of an ambulance parked near the dressing station beside the Canal de lYser, just a few hundred yards north of Ypres, McCrae vented his anguish by composing a poem. The major was no stranger to writing, having authored several medical texts besides dabbling in poetry. In the nearby cemetery, McCrae could see the wild poppies that sprang up in the ditches in that part of Europe, and he spent twenty minutes of precious rest time scribbling fifteen lines of verse in a notebook. A young soldier watched him write it. Cyril Allinson, a twenty-two year old sergeant-major, was delivering mail that day when he spotted McCrae. The major looked up as Allinson approached, then went on writing while the sergeant-major stood there quietly. McCraes "In Flanders Fields" remains to this day one of the most memorable war poems ever written. It is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle in the Ypres salient in the spring of 1915. Here is the story of the making of that poem: As a surgeon attached to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade, Major McCrae, who had joined the McGill faculty in 1900 after graduating from the University of Toronto, had spent seventeen days treating injured men -- Canadians, British, Indians, French, and Germans -- in the Ypres salient. "I wish I could embody on paper some of the varied sensations of that seventeen days... Seventeen days of Hades! At the end of the first day if anyone had told us we had to spend seventeen days there, we would have folded our hands and said it could not have been done." One death particularly affected McCrae. The Coming Data Explosion
clipped by: Alcanzarlo
One of the key aspects of the emerging Internet of Things - where real-world objects are connected to the Internet - is the massive amount of new data on the Web that will result. As more and more things in the world are connected to the Internet, it follows that more data will be uploaded to and downloaded from the cloud. And this is in addition to the burgeoning amount of user-generated content - which has increased 15-fold over the past few years, according to a presentation that Google VP Marissa Mayer made last August at Xerox PARC. Mayer said in that presentation that this "data explosion is bigger than Moores law."
Like Mayer, Ranganathan compared the online data growth rate to Moores Law. He told me that its rising significantly faster than Moores Law. HP CEO Mark Hurd put it this way in June 2009: "more data will be created in the next four years than in the history of the planet."

Megafauna cave painting could be 40,000 years old
clipped by: tabseyclippers remarks: Puts beyond doubt that the aborigines have been here more than 40 thousand years.
Scientists say an Aboriginal rock art depiction of an extinct giant bird could be Australias oldest painting.
The red ochre painting, which depicts two emu-like birds with their necks outstretched, could date back to the earliest days of settlement on the continent.
It was rediscovered at the centre of the Arnhem Land plateau about two years ago, but archaeologists first visited the site a fortnight ago.
A palaeontologist has confirmed the animals depicted are the megafauna species Genyornis.
Archaeologist Ben Gunn said the giant birds became extinct more than 40,000 years ago.
"The details on this painting indicate that it was done by someone who knew that animal very well," he said.
He says the detail could not have been passed down through oral storytelling.
"If it is a Genyornis, and it certainly does have all the features of one, it would be the oldest dated visual painting that weve got in Australia," he said.

Back in 1997, an offshore-drilling newsletter ran an article by Larry Flak, a veteran well blowout expert, at Boots & Coots at the time, listing a variety of paths leading to a seabed blowout and stated flatly that stopping one would be an enormous challenge.
His bottom line? ?Options are limited, so prevention and fast action are critical.?
Flak, who later moved to Signa Engineering, would have been great to have on hand right now, but sadly he died last year in a recreational boating accident. (Flak?s 1997 article was brought to my attention by a Dot Earth reader, Ike Solem.)

Shock And Anger Follows Gaza Freedom Flotilla Massacre
clipped by: thisnamecantbetakenclippers remarks: The latest news is that 19 activists have been killed and at least 60 injured. A journalist on board said that the activists had raised a white flag as commandos boarded the Turkish ship, but to no avail. The Israeli troops simply opened fire as soon as they stormed the convoy. Protests have begun all over the world and there is worldwide condemnation.
The Israeli government is unapologetic and says it acted in self defense.
That the Zionists could do such a thing is beyond horrific and almost beyond comprehension. .
Israeli troops storm Gaza flotilla
Israel kills activists as forces storm flotilla bound for Gaza

The ships, several of them Turkish, were carrying medical equipment and other aid to highlight the three-year-old Israeli blockade of the Palestinian territory. The attack took place 40 miles out to sea, in international waters.
The Israel Defence Forces confirmed that at least 10 protesters were killed and four naval officers wounded, one seriously. Israeli Arab groups say a prominent activist is among the wounded.
The two sides offered conflicting versions of events, with a reporter on one of the boats saying the Israelis fired at the vessel before boarding it.
According to tweets from activists on board the ships, Israeli forces dropped from helicopters on to the deck of the Turkish passenger ship, the Marvi Mamara, at around 4.30am, and immediately opened fire. The ship was surrounded by navy vessels.

Sworn Statement From the Israelis
clipped by: thisnamecantbetakenclippers remarks: Sure we know that the press has not yet had the chance to verify our claims because we are keeping all the activi?sorry, terrorists away from everyone for their own good. Subjecting them to the stress of journalist?s interviews is cruel after a difficult ordeal like this and, as you know, we are not cruel. Never. Ever.
In due course, when we have presented every excuse known to mankind and God, we will allow you to hear from the terrorists on the convoy who currently are under detention or in hospital, never you mind where. They may make some wild claims but take them with a grain of salt. Terrorists don?t always make sense, poor things. Religion does it every time!
Thank you for your attention and know that Israel would never lie or tell fibs. Never, ever. We are God?s Children, you know. Shame you?re not, but life is a lottery, isn?t it?
Have a nice day!

Speaker: Mark Regev.
?I hope you people in the media all get the message! Israel is innocent. As usual.
Its soldiers, arriving on an early morning goodwill visit to the convoy carrying teddy bears and chocolates, were attacked, yes attacked I say, by those vicious terrorists on the Aid Convoy, all 800 of them, even the children.
The terrorists, wearing red body armor, carried flame throwers, maces, broadswords, crossbows, spears. Some were even armed with machine guns, grenade launchers, Apache helicopters, F-16s, missiles, boiling oil, scorpions, etc.
The IDF, the most moral army in the world, showing their normal restraint, tried to fight back with their bears but they were largely overcome, but not entirely. Unfortunately, 19 of the terrorists fell over and broke their necks while some others, nearly 60, had heart problems or slipped discs.
?Would I lie to you??
Vatican Official Tells Paedophile Priests to Expect Damnation
clipped by: thisnamecantbetakenclippers remarks: I suspect they dont give a damn. How many pedophile priests actually believe and practice the religion they preach? If they did, they wouldnt have molested children to begin with.

The Vatican official in charge of catching paedophile priests has said their punishment in hell would be worse than receiving the death penalty on earth.
Monsignor Charles Scicluna issued the warning to seminarians at St Peters basilica, in Rome, during prayers for abuse victims.
Quoting Gregory the Great, an early pope and monk who laid down rules for the clergy, he said a paedophile priest who exploited his office would get tougher treatment in hell than a layman.
"It would be really better for him that his evil deeds cause him death" under secular laws, he said.
Scicluna added that those who hurt children should be thrown into the sea with a millstone around their neck.
In his sermon, he also suggested that priests who covered up abuse committed by colleagues would also face the fires of hell.

What is responsible for the jets is a quasar. Through an optical telescope, quasars look like ordinary stars. But they pour out far more energy-actually more than many a galaxy, from an area no larger than the solar system. Quasar 3C 273, for example, is 20 times brighter than the galaxy in which it is embedded.

How regulators can look the other way at non-human trading, a/k/a high-frequency trading (which is over 73% of Wall Street volume) - and figure its OK to pit a machine against small investors has always been something of a financial miracle to me.
Until, of course, I got hip to the term "captive regulators"; the regulators who work for government for a while then go to work in the private sector for phatkat deals offered by those they once held accountable on the publics behalf.

Funny Pictures of Students Sleeping in Class
clipped by: bruxedoSleep plays a major factor in students? performance. Sleep deprivation affects memory, learning ability and behavior. Studies show that we have to sleep at least 8 hours for our minds to be in shape. But we all know that when we are young, it?s usual not to do it, at least all the time. Partying, drinking too much coffee or alcohol, too much television watching, going top bed late are usual between students.
These are the main reasons to easily fall asleep during classes and that?s why we can see so much cases like those in this picture collection.
Have a smile but be aware of the causes of these behaviors in class (or at work).

Why teenagers cant concentrate: too much grey matter

Parents who despair over their teenagers lack of concentration in class, inability to sit still long enough to finish homework or plan ahead, should take solace. Their children are not being lazy or careless ? they are hapless victims of neurobiology.
New research has found that teenagers brains continue developing far longer into adulthood than previously thought. Adolescents may look like young adults but their brain structure resembles that of much younger children, according to the study to be published in the Journal of Neuroscience on Wednesday.
Journalism and the words of power
clipped by: tabseyclippers remarks: An interesting read.
Power and the media are not just about cosy relationships between journalists and political leaders, between editors and presidents. They are not just about the parasitic-osmotic relationship between supposedly honourable reporters and the nexus of power that runs between White House and state department and Pentagon, between Downing Street and the foreign office and the ministry of defence. In the western context, power and the media is about words - and the use of words.
It is about semantics.
It is about the employment of phrases and clauses and their origins. And it is about the misuse of history; and about our ignorance of history.
More and more today, we journalists have become prisoners of the language of power.

A man tried to escape from a hospital in the Dominican Republic where he had been hospitalized for priapism, a condition characterized by a prolonged and painful erection not associated with sexual desire after learning that doctors planned to amputate his penis because he may have gangrene.
Luis Rodríguez Taveras, 45, had been admitted more than three weeks in a hospital of the north of the Dominican Republic because of this problem, which was caused by eating a lot of sexual stimulants. In statements given to local journalists later, Rodriguez declared that he had ingested drugs.
?In the hospital they told me that they had to cut my penis because I was turning black, and I could not even urinate,? he told to the Dominican media. ?That caused me terror.? Me without a penis? ?No? he said. Doctors who attended him found him in the outskirts of Santiago, 160 kilometers north of Santo Domingo.

"The worsening humanitarian situation calls for an immediate, comprehensive and lasting end to the Israeli blockade on Gaza". This was the statement of a cross party group of European Parliament Members just back from Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. They returned prior to the storming of an international aid ship bound for Gaza by Israeli commandos which has been condemned by Parliaments President Jerzy Buzek.
The delegations visit in Gaza was made possible thanks to the support of the Egyptian authorities, the Israeli authorities denying access to the Gaza strip.
The delegation points out that the siege has completely isolated the people of Gaza, condemning them to a life of extreme poverty, with 80% of the population dependant on food aid. Not only is the blockade hurting the population and creating a black market, it is also playing into the hands of the most radical factions and empowering them by providing them with extra funds.

Why isnt BP Under Criminal Investigation ?
clipped by: leevardiclippers remarks: ...a SERIAL ENVIRONMENTAL CRIMINAL continues its SOCIOPATHIC agenda !
Why Isnt BP Under Criminal Investigation?
Why hasnt the government launched a criminal investigation into BP?
Thats the question several former Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials have been asking in the aftermath of the catastrophic explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig last month that killed 11 employees and ruptured a newly drilled well 5,000 feet below the surface and has spewed tens of millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf if Mexico, which now stands as the largest spill in US history.

Like previous BP-related disasters in Alaska and Texas, evidence has emerged that appears to show BP knowingly cut corners on maintenance and safety on Deepwater Horizons operations, which, according to blogger bmaz, who writes about legal issues at Emptywheel, could amount to criminal violations of the Clean Water Act. Additionally, because people were killed, BP and company officials could also face prosecution for negligent and reckless homicide.

40,000 Year Old Aboriginal Rock Art Discovered in Arnhem Land
clipped by: celestialdancerclippers remarks: How utterly exciting!! I am trying to imagine what the world would have been like with these giant emu-like birds, giant kangaroos, giant echidnas et al. Pretty amazing sounds like a good description.

"Either the painting is 40,000 years old, which is when science thinks Genyornis disappeared, or alternatively the Genyornis lived a lot longer than science has been able to establish."
The traditional owners of the land in the Northern Territory say they are excited the painting could be Australias oldest dated rock art.
The Jawoyn Associations Wes Miller says the painting is one of thousands rediscovered across Arnhem Land in recent years.

clipped by: amgumenAn armoured dinosaur with 4ft horns - the longest known among the extinct reptiles - has been unearthed in Mexico.
The 72 million-year-old rhino-sized plant-eater Coahuilaceratops magnacuerna was an ancestor of the famous three-horned Triceratops.
Like other horned dinosaurs, or ceratopsids, it had a large bony plate behind its head which would have acted as a shield.

Coahuilaceratops most notable feature are the two enormous horns that jut out from above its eyes.
Fossil bones of an adult animal, which weighed four to five tons, measured around 22ft, and stood six to seven feet tall at the shoulder and hip, were recovered from a site in the state of Coahuila, southern Mexico, in 2003.
Scientists believe the horns were most probably used in mating contests rather than to fight off predators.
