Sydney Opera House so hard-up it may have to close

Updated at 1:31pm on 31 May 2010

The Sydney Opera House is reported to be in such severe financial straits that it could face permanent closure.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper in Sydney reports that damning internal reports reveal the cash crisis is so desperate performers lives are at risk from ancient stage machinery because there is no money to update it.

A senior Opera House source told the paper that government action is needed to keep the venue operating, the ABC reports.

The source says the reports indicate that if something radical isnt done, the famous venue will have to close.

Opera House chief executive Richard Evans has confirmed it may have to close permanently if state and federal governments do not give $800 million to replace stage machinery.

AP throws pity party for obama

On Saturday, the Associated Press informed its readers that President Obama cannot be expected to focus all of his attention on the Gulf Coast oil spill.

The reason? Presidents have to juggle a number of pressing issues at a time, and what with America being in a recession, Obama simply cant afford to give sole focus to this disaster.

Too bad the AP wasnt so understanding in 2005 when President Bush was perceived as being detached from the suffering in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Back then, the wire service was quick to mention vacation plans and peddle accusations of the federal government not caring about the poor.

But what a difference with a Democrat in the White House: as BPs efforts to plug the leak continue to fail, there is increasing danger of Americans putting partial blame on an ineffective government - and we just cant have that.

In 2006, Rendell said that he didn?t exactly offer Hoeffel a job quid pro quo but rather dangled the prospect of a job in front of him to convince him not to run. ?I said come back and see me if you do it,? Rendell explained. ?He came back and saw me, and he was out of public service.  I appointed him as a deputy secretary of commerce.  He did a great job.?

But Rep. Darrell Issa, the top Republican on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, attempted to draw a distinction between the two examples. He said on ?Fox News Sunday? that Rendell?s offer to Hoeffel was different because the Pennsylvania governor ?carefully made sure he did not offer [Hoeffel] a job as a quid pro quo.?

?Gov. Rendell just made the point for us.  If he had offered a job in order to get out of the race, it would have been a crime, a crime under a law signed, of all things, by President Clinton during his administration,? Issa said.

122 DEGREES IN INDIA!

Record temperatures in northern India have claimed hundreds of lives in what is believed to be the hottest summer in the country since records began in the late 1800s.

The death toll is expected to rise with experts forecasting temperatures approaching 50C (122F) in coming weeks. More than 100 people are reported to have died in the state of Gujarat where the mercury topped at 48.5C last week. At least 90 died in Maharashtra, 35 in Rajasthan and 34 in Bihar.

Hospitals in Gujarat have been receiving around 300 people a day suffering from food poisoning and heat stroke, ministers said. Officials admit the figures are only a fraction of the total as most of the casualties are found in remote rural villages.

In actuality, though, there are far more dark spots on the map than youd imagine. The general view that every square inch of land is worth a bazillion dollars is just not true. There are gaps in the façade that whole towns have fallen into, along with bizarre abandoned theme parks, ruined U.S. Air Force bases, and the tawdry remnants of pay-by-the-hour love hotels.

California Mom Finds Kidnapped Daughter on Facebook

A father is behind bars, arrested for allegedly kidnapped his own children from California 14 years ago, and bringing them to Central Florida to live.

For years, investigators have been searching for him, but it was the social networking website Facebook that delivered the break it took more than a decade to get, MyFoxOrlando reports.

Faustino Utrera is now charged with two counts of kidnapping, and two counts of violating child custody orders.

According to the Osceola County Sheriffs Office, Utrera was at a bus stop on Wednesday at about 2:30 in the afternoon, waiting to pick up his 16-year-old son from school, when he was taken into custody.

Faustinos 16-year-old son and 17-year-old daughter had been attending celebration high school. Investigators said the family of three had actually been living in the palm key mobile home park in Polk County.

Chasing the Sun: A Supersonic Celestial Observation

Clip Source: scienceray.com

When the moon passes between the earth and the sun, it casts a huge shadow over the earth as it blocks out the sunlight. For those at the edge of the shadow (the penumbra) the eclipse is partial; the moon seems to take a bite out of the sun as it passes. But observers standing in the center of the shadow (the umbra) see a spectacular solar eclipse.

Unfamiliar and beautiful features become visible around the edge of the sun. The prominences-the reddish spikes that protrude from the sun beyond the dark edge of the moon-are columns of incandescent hydrogen; they extend thousands of miles above the sun?s surface. The sun?s halo, the pearly white corona, also becomes visible.

For less than eight minutes these wondrous aspects of the sun are revealed in an eerie twilight. Then the moon continues inexorably in its orbit around the earth, and the spectacle is over.

It happened about 40 miles (64 km) out to sea, in international waters.

Israel says its soldiers were shot at and attacked with bars and knives; the activists say Israeli troops came on board shooting.

The European Union has called for an inquiry to establish what happened.

This is already the worst environmental disaster in US history. But, even going by the highest estimates of the damage already done (40 million gallons), this is only 2 Percent of what is down there ready to come out.

The Beginning of Global Economic Chaos

With the mainstream media focused today on the rioting and civil unrest in Greece, the Dow Jones plunged this afternoon from a decline of 400 points to a decline of nearly 1,000 points within minutes, before rebounding to finish the day down 347. Meanwhile, the price of gold surged $34.40 to a five-month high of $1,209 per ounce.

NIA believes U.S. stocks are extremely overvalued in terms of real money, gold and silver. One of our top ten predictions for 2010 that we announced on December 21st, was that we would see a sharp decline in the Dow/Gold ratio from 9.3 to below 7. After todays decline in the Dow and rise in the price of gold, the Dow/Gold ratio finished the day at 8.7. We expect this downward trend in the Dow/Gold ratio to accelerate in the weeks and months ahead.

Pretense of Leadership When There Is None

Obamas pretense of leadership when and where there is none

There are a number of dictionary definitions for "lead." But, the primary ones are "to go before or with to show the way; conduct or escort: to lead a group" and "to act as a guide; show the way." Therefore, a leader ? by logical and implicit understanding ? must have followers.

During Obamas campaign for POTUS, his strong dictator-like shouts were followed by broad smiles and an almost imperceptible soothing hiss as he told Americans that he would redistribute (aka steal and give to himself and his minions) our possessions to others. He said it was "only fair" and that we should learn to deal with less and that it was good for us. Note: But, Obama & Co will now be learning to deal with more...and more.

Remember

clippers remarks: Lieutenant Helmer was buried later that day in the little cemetery outside McCraes dressing station, and McCrae had performed the funeral ceremony in the absence of the chaplain.

The next day, sitting on the back of an ambulance parked near the dressing station beside the Canal de lYser, just a few hundred yards north of Ypres, McCrae vented his anguish by composing a poem. The major was no stranger to writing, having authored several medical texts besides dabbling in poetry.

In the nearby cemetery, McCrae could see the wild poppies that sprang up in the ditches in that part of Europe, and he spent twenty minutes of precious rest time scribbling fifteen lines of verse in a notebook.

A young soldier watched him write it. Cyril Allinson, a twenty-two year old sergeant-major, was delivering mail that day when he spotted McCrae. The major looked up as Allinson approached, then went on writing while the sergeant-major stood there quietly.

McCraes "In Flanders Fields" remains to this day one of the most memorable war poems ever written. It is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle in the Ypres salient in the spring of 1915. Here is the story of the making of that poem:

As a surgeon attached to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade, Major McCrae, who had joined the McGill faculty in 1900 after graduating from the University of Toronto, had spent seventeen days treating injured men -- Canadians, British, Indians, French, and Germans -- in the Ypres salient.

"I wish I could embody on paper some of the varied sensations of that seventeen days... Seventeen days of Hades! At the end of the first day if anyone had told us we had to spend seventeen days there, we would have folded our hands and said it could not have been done."

One death particularly affected McCrae. A young friend and former student, Lieut. Alexis Helmer of Ottawa, had been killed by a shell burst on 2 May 1915.

A Memorial Day Worth Remembering

clipped by: debbyski
Clip Source: www.cbsnews.com

Tomorrow is Memorial Day, the day we have set aside to honor by remembering all the Americans who have died fighting for the thing we like the most about our America: the freedom we have to live as we please.

No one would know from Memorial Day that Richie M., who was shot through the forehead coming onto Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, wore different color socks on each foot because he thought it brought him good luck.

For too many Americans, Memorial Day has become just another day off.

Obie Slingerland and Andy Rooney were best friends and co-captains of the high school football team.

We use the phrase "gave their lives," but they didn?t give their lives. Their lives were taken from them.

I wish we could dedicate Memorial Day, not to the memory of those who have died at war, but to the idea of saving the lives of the young people who are going to die in the future if we don?t find some new way - some new religion maybe - that takes war out of our lives.

That would be a Memorial Day worth celebrating.

Some conservative talk show hosts and pundits have mounted an effort to politicize Memorial Day by questioning President Obamas plan to visit a national cemetery in Illinois instead of attending the annual ceremony at Arlington.

Lets set the record straight. Mr. Obama will participate today in a ceremony at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois, about 50 miles south of Chicago. He is not the first president to be away from Washington on a patriotic holiday.

How the police can seize your stuff when you have not been proven guilty of anything

Under ?civil asset forfeiture? laws, they typically do not have to prove ?beyond a reasonable doubt? that a crime was committed, or even charge anyone with an offence. What is more, the money raised by auctioning seized houses, boats and cars is often used to boost the budgets of the police department that did the seizing. That can mean fancier patrol cars, badass hardware or simply keeping the budget plump in lean times. In one survey 40% of police executives agreed that funds from civil-asset forfeiture were ?necessary as a budget supplement?. This conflict of interest has predictable consequences. It spurs the police to pay more attention to cases that are likely to involve seizable assets (such as drug busts) and less attention to other ones. A report from the Institute for Justice, a pressure group, calls it ?Policing for Profit?.

Why people get made at Facebook and not Twitter (by @flapic)

clipped by: egoldstein
clippers remarks: For anyone who is uncertain about why there is concern/anger towards Facebook, I think Flavio nailed it with this explanation...
  • Flavio

Diane, the issue with Facebook is that they started as a service where you could share your stuff privately with your friends, and then opened to others; so many people were not comfortable in seeing their private data become public! Also, new settings are automatically applied, so you have to know about them and opt-out.
Twitter, on the other hand, was born to be open since the beginning, so when you subscribed you were aware of it. Furthermore new settings come as opt-in, like now with geolocation.
That is a big difference in approach, and that?s why people got mad at Facebook and not at Twitter.

Calgary boy to return after 2 years in U.S.

A United States judge has ruled a 12-year-old Calgary boy can return to Canada after being shuffled through a series of foster homes in Oregon for nearly two years.

Lisa Kirkman says her son Noah Kirkman, who was 10 years old at the time, was picked up by Oregon police for not wearing his bike helmet while on a summer vacation with his stepfather in 2008.

U.S. officials didnt recognize Noahs stepfather as a legal guardian, so the boy was sent to a foster home.

After a long legal battle, a U.S. judge ruled on Friday that Noah would be allowed to return to Canada.

?Im elated,? Kirkman said. ?Finally. Its been so long and we finally have a solid yes, he is going home, absolutely for sure he is going home.?

Kirkman said the news is hard to believe after waiting so long to bring Noah home.

A date for Noahs return has not yet been set, but his family says it likely wont be until at least the end of June, when the school year is finished.

BP Prepared for Spill 10 Times Gulf Disaster, Permit Plans Say

BP Plc said in permit applications for drilling in the Gulf of Mexico that it was prepared to handle an oil spill more than ten times larger than the one now spewing crude into the waters off the southern United States.

?Proper execution of the procedures detailed in this manual will help to limit environmental and ecological damage to sensitive areas as well as minimizing loss or damage to BP facilities in the event of a petroleum release,? the company said in its oil-spill response plan, filed with the U.S. Minerals Management Service in 2008.

The representations show that BP overestimated its ability to control an oil spill in waters where it?s the biggest player in a Gulf energy extraction industry worth $52 billion a year, said Bob Deans, a spokesman with the Natural Resources Defense Council in Washington.

?BP has obviously overpromised and underdelivered,? Deans said. ?They told us they had a plan that could deal with the consequences of a worst-case scenario. They don?t.?

A lethal attack by Israeli commandos on the Gaza-bound aid convoy continues to generate outrage across Europe with France, Germany, Belgium and Ireland condemning the raid.

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner demanded an immediate inquiry into the violent act, which left 20 people aboard the aid ships killed.

"I am profoundly shocked by the tragic consequences of the Israeli military operation against the peace Flotilla for Gaza," Kouchner said in a Monday statement.

"Nothing can justify the use of violence such as this, which we condemn," Reuters quoted Kouchner as saying.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, for his part, said he was "deeply concerned" about the casualties.

Belgian Foreign Minister Steven Vanackere described the scale of the force used as "extremely regrettable."

The aid convoy dubbed Freedom Flotilla -- co-organized by the Turkish Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH) -- was carrying thousands of tons of supplies for the besieged Gaza Strip.

      The Coming Data Explosion

One of the key aspects of the emerging Internet of Things - where real-world objects are connected to the Internet - is the massive amount of new data on the Web that will result. As more and more things in the world are connected to the Internet, it follows that more data will be uploaded to and downloaded from the cloud. And this is in addition to the burgeoning amount of user-generated content - which has increased 15-fold over the past few years, according to a presentation that Google VP Marissa Mayer made last August at Xerox PARC. Mayer said in that presentation that this "data explosion is bigger than Moores law."

Like Mayer, Ranganathan compared the online data growth rate to Moores Law. He told me that its rising significantly faster than Moores Law. HP CEO Mark Hurd put it this way in June 2009: "more data will be created in the next four years than in the history of the planet."

Scientists say an Aboriginal rock art depiction of an extinct giant bird could be Australias oldest painting.

The red ochre painting, which depicts two emu-like birds with their necks outstretched, could date back to the earliest days of settlement on the continent.

It was rediscovered at the centre of the Arnhem Land plateau about two years ago, but archaeologists first visited the site a fortnight ago.

A palaeontologist has confirmed the animals depicted are the megafauna species Genyornis.

Archaeologist Ben Gunn said the giant birds became extinct more than 40,000 years ago.

"The details on this painting indicate that it was done by someone who knew that animal very well," he said.

He says the detail could not have been passed down through oral storytelling.

"If it is a Genyornis, and it certainly does have all the features of one, it would be the oldest dated visual painting that weve got in Australia," he said.

The researchers suggest this surge may be the cause of near-death experiences,

Many people experience the sensation as a religious vision and treat it as confirmation of an afterlife. However, the scientists behind the new research believe that is wrong.

?We think the near-death experiences could be caused by a surge of electrical energy released as the brain runs out of oxygen,? said Lakhmir Chawla, an intensive care doctor at George Washington University medical centre

?As blood flow slows down and oxygen levels fall, the brain cells fire one last electrical impulse. It starts in one part of the brain and spreads in a cascade and this may give people vivid mental sensations.?

According to tweets from activists on board the ships, Israeli forces dropped from helicopters on to the deck of the Turkish passenger ship, the Marvi Mamara, at around 4.30am, and immediately opened fire. The ship was surrounded by navy vessels.

      Sworn Statement From the Israelis

clippers remarks: Sure we know that the press has not yet had the chance to verify our claims because we are keeping all the activi?sorry, terrorists away from everyone for their own good. Subjecting them to the stress of journalist?s interviews is cruel after a difficult ordeal like this and, as you know, we are not cruel. Never. Ever.

In due course, when we have presented every excuse known to mankind and God, we will allow you to hear from the terrorists on the convoy who currently are under detention or in hospital, never you mind where. They may make some wild claims but take them with a grain of salt. Terrorists don?t always make sense, poor things. Religion does it every time!

Thank you for your attention and know that Israel would never lie or tell fibs. Never, ever. We are God?s Children, you know. Shame you?re not, but life is a lottery, isn?t it?

      Have a nice day!

      Speaker: Mark Regev.

?I hope you people in the media all get the message! Israel is innocent. As usual.

Its soldiers, arriving on an early morning goodwill visit to the convoy carrying teddy bears and chocolates, were attacked, yes attacked I say, by those vicious terrorists on the Aid Convoy, all 800 of them, even the children.

The terrorists, wearing red body armor, carried flame throwers, maces, broadswords, crossbows, spears. Some were even armed with machine guns, grenade launchers, Apache helicopters, F-16s, missiles, boiling oil, scorpions, etc.

The IDF, the most moral army in the world, showing their normal restraint, tried to fight back with their bears but they were largely overcome, but not entirely. Unfortunately, 19 of the terrorists fell over and broke their necks while some others, nearly 60, had heart problems or slipped discs.

Israel is innocent. We are always innocents just like we are always victims. It?s time you got that message.

      ?Would I lie to you??

The Vatican official in charge of catching paedophile priests has said their punishment in hell would be worse than receiving the death penalty on earth.

Monsignor Charles Scicluna issued the warning to seminarians at St Peters basilica, in Rome, during prayers for abuse victims.

Quoting Gregory the Great, an early pope and monk who laid down rules for the clergy, he said a paedophile priest who exploited his office would get tougher treatment in hell than a layman.

"It would be really better for him that his evil deeds cause him death" under secular laws, he said.

Scicluna added that those who hurt children should be thrown into the sea with a millstone around their neck.

In his sermon, he also suggested that priests who covered up abuse committed by colleagues would also face the fires of hell.

What is responsible for the jets is a quasar. Through an optical telescope, quasars look like ordinary stars. But they pour out far more energy-actually more than many a galaxy, from an area no larger than the solar system. Quasar 3C 273, for example, is 20 times brighter than the galaxy in which it is embedded.

NASA: Is Approaching Space Object Artificial?

NASA authorities report that an unknown object approaching the Earth from deep space is almost certainly artificial in origin rather than being an asteroid. Object 2010 KQ was detected by the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona earlier this month, and subsequently tracked by NASAs asteroid-watching service, the Near-Earth Object Program headquartered at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.

      Comet_1342249c

The mysterious artificial object has apparently made a close pass by the Earth, coming in almost to the distance of the Moons orbit, and is now headed away again into the interplanetary void. The object has used no propulsion during the time NASA has had it under observation.

The experts believe that the object must be a spacecraft, or part of one - likely to be a booster stage from an interplanetary mission of the past, now drifting back in to Earth and out again.

China Flexes Supercomputing Muscle in Top 500 Rankings

China flexed its computing muscle with a supercomputer called Nebulae, rocketing to second place on the biannual Top500 list, which ranks the most powerful computers in the world.

The new supercomputer, which was made by Dawning and installed at Chinas National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen, combines Nvidia graphics processors and Intel Xeon CPUs to provide 1.27 petaflops of performance. However, it could not top the Jaguar supercomputer at the U.S. Department of Energys Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which held on to the top spot in the Top500 list with 1.76 petaflops of performance

The list was published on Monday at the International Supercomputing Conference 2010 conference in Hamburg, Germany. The list is published twice a year by Top500.org.

Nebulae is only the third supercomputer to break the petaflop performance barrier.

The plans by Indias Vivo BioTech Ltd. to set up a biotechnology center in southern Malacca state have come under fire by activists because it will conduct tests on dogs and primates to make medicines. The activists say Malaysia has no regulations on animal research, which could lead to test subjects being abused.

"God created animals for the benefits of human beings. Thats why he created rats and monkeys ... We cannot test on human beings," he told The Associated Press. "This is the way it has to be. God created monkeys, and some have to be tested."

He said Malaysian agencies, such as the wildlife department, could monitor that the animals were not abused and proper procedures followed. He said eating animals could also be seen as cruel, and yet it was widely accepted.

Partying, drinking too much coffee or alcohol, too much television watching, going top bed late are usual between students.

These are the main reasons to easily fall asleep during classes and that?s why we can see so much cases like those in this picture collection.

Robert Fisk, The Independent newspapers Middle East correspondent, gave the following address to the fifth Al Jazeera annual forum on May 23.

Power and the media are not just about cosy relationships between journalists and political leaders, between editors and presidents. They are not just about the parasitic-osmotic relationship between supposedly honourable reporters and the nexus of power that runs between White House and state department and Pentagon, between Downing Street and the foreign office and the ministry of defence. In the western context, power and the media is about words - and the use of words.

      It is about semantics.

It is about the employment of phrases and clauses and their origins. And it is about the misuse of history; and about our ignorance of history.

More and more today, we journalists have become prisoners of the language of power.

Gaza flotilla participants created war atmosphere before confronting Israel

On the day before the Gaza flotilla confronted the Israeli navy, Al-Jazeera TV documented the pre-battle atmosphere created by men on board the flotilla, who chanted a well-known Islamic battle cry invoking the killing and defeat of Jews in battle:

"[Remember] Khaibar, Khaibar, oh Jews! The army of Muhammad will return!"

Khaibar is the name of the last Jewish village defeated by Muhammads army in 628. Many Jews were killed in that battle, which marked the end of Jewish presence in Arabia.

Al-Jazeera also interviewed a woman who said that the flotilla participants goal was "one of two happy endings: either Martyrdom or reaching Gaza."

"The flotilla includes hundreds of Arab and foreign solidarity activists from more than 40 countries ... They have announced their determination to use resistance to any attempt at piracy by the Israeli occupation."

Man almost has his penis amputated after 27 hour erection

Too much of a good thing could end up being a bad thing.

A man tried to escape from a hospital in the Dominican Republic where he had been hospitalized for priapism, a condition characterized by a prolonged and painful erection not associated with sexual desire after learning that doctors planned to amputate his penis because he may have gangrene.

Luis Rodríguez Taveras, 45, had been admitted more than three weeks in a hospital of the north of the Dominican Republic because of this problem, which was caused by eating a lot of sexual stimulants. In statements given to local journalists later, Rodriguez declared that he had ingested drugs.

?In the hospital they told me that they had to cut my penis because I was turning black, and I could not even urinate,? he told to the Dominican media. ?That caused me terror.? Me without a penis? ?No? he said. Doctors who attended him found him in the outskirts of Santiago, 160 kilometers north of Santo Domingo.

      Earworms: Can They Be Killed?

According to new research, around 9 out of 10 of us have experienced earworms lasting an hour or longer.

      fingers in ears

An earworm is a song going around in your head that you cant get rid of. Some claim that earworms are like a cognitive itch, we scratch them by repeating the tune over and over in our heads.

In new research, Beaman & Williams (2010) asked 103 participants aged 15-57 all about their earworm experiences. Heres what they found:

      • Many earworms were pop songs, although adverts and TV/film themes and video game tunes were also mentioned.
      • One-third generally experienced the chorus or refrain over and over again, but almost half said that it varied.
      • 10% of participants reported that earworms stopped them doing other things.
      • Contrary to popular belief those with musical training were no more likely to experience earworms.

For most of us earworms are relatively untroubling.

So I dont want to hear any complaints about "We Will Rock You" or "Whomp - There It Is".

"The worsening humanitarian situation calls for an immediate, comprehensive and lasting end to the Israeli blockade on Gaza". This was the statement of a cross party group of European Parliament Members just back from Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. They returned prior to the storming of an international aid ship bound for Gaza by Israeli commandos which has been condemned by Parliaments President Jerzy Buzek.

The delegations visit in Gaza was made possible thanks to the support of the Egyptian authorities, the Israeli authorities denying access to the Gaza strip.

The delegation points out that the siege has completely isolated the people of Gaza, condemning them to a life of extreme poverty, with 80% of the population dependant on food aid. Not only is the blockade hurting the population and creating a black market, it is also playing into the hands of the most radical factions and empowering them by providing them with extra funds.

Why Isnt BP Under Criminal Investigation?

Why hasnt the government launched a criminal investigation into BP?

Thats the question several former Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials have been asking in the aftermath of the catastrophic explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig last month that killed 11 employees and ruptured a newly drilled well 5,000 feet below the surface and has spewed tens of millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf if Mexico, which now stands as the largest spill in US history.

Like previous BP-related disasters in Alaska and Texas, evidence has emerged that appears to show BP knowingly cut corners on maintenance and safety on Deepwater Horizons operations, which, according to blogger bmaz, who writes about legal issues at Emptywheel, could amount to criminal violations of the Clean Water Act. Additionally, because people were killed, BP and company officials could also face prosecution for negligent and reckless homicide.

A red ochre painting, which depicts two emu-like birds with their necks outstretched

"Either the painting is 40,000 years old, which is when science thinks Genyornis disappeared, or alternatively the Genyornis lived a lot longer than science has been able to establish."

The traditional owners of the land in the Northern Territory say they are excited the painting could be Australias oldest dated rock art.

The Jawoyn Associations Wes Miller says the painting is one of thousands rediscovered across Arnhem Land in recent years.

this is clearly a demonstration of how long Jawoyn people have been in this country and other Indigenous groups.

Its amazing to view the swiftness that those with the power in Congress and the Administration have undermined so many basic tenets of Americanism. Is there anything that they have done this year that has been profitable for our "general welfare"?

I was really disappointed in -- in the way that this process was accelerated, Sen. Webb told CNN.

A leading Democratic voice on military affairs has criticized members of his own party for the hurried way in which congressional Democrats and the White House are pushing through the repeal of the military?s ?Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell? policy.

Gates and Mullen have commissioned a thorough survey of U.S. service members in order to ascertain how the force structure feels as a whole about having openly gay and lesbian members serving within their midst.

in an apparent acknowledgement that they may not have sufficient votes to support a repeal after this November?s midterms, the White House and Democrats on Capitol Hill moved forward last week with efforts to pass a law that would repeal the policy.

An armoured dinosaur with 4ft horns - the longest known among the extinct reptiles - has been unearthed in Mexico.

The 72 million-year-old rhino-sized plant-eater Coahuilaceratops magnacuerna was an ancestor of the famous three-horned Triceratops.

Like other horned dinosaurs, or ceratopsids, it had a large bony plate behind its head which would have acted as a shield.

Imposing: An artists impression of the armored dinosaur Coahuilaceratops

Coahuilaceratops most notable feature are the two enormous horns that jut out from above its eyes.

Fossil bones of an adult animal, which weighed four to five tons, measured around 22ft, and stood six to seven feet tall at the shoulder and hip, were recovered from a site in the state of Coahuila, southern Mexico, in 2003.

Scientists believe the horns were most probably used in mating contests rather than to fight off predators.

Residents hid inside their homes with their windows and doors locked shut as the dust storm swept through the region advancing 70ft a minute.

On the move: A massive sand storm hits a village in Golmud in the Qinghai Province. The region is near the edge of the Gobi desert

Day turned to night as tons of dust temporarily blocked out the sun and reduced visibility to around 600ft. But suddenly the storm calmed and the mile-high cloud settled back to Earth again, leaving villagers with a major clean-up operation.

Golmud is home to 200,000 people with 140,000 living in the city centre. The new industrial city is built on a flat expanse close to the borders of the Gobi desert, which is the largest desert in Asia. Although not an ideal place to live, tens of thousands of people have relocated there to work at the salt lakes in the region.

An instigator of suffering, a willing participant in violence and terrorism." Dont know who will get this but - both sides have too much become what they are against, rather than what they are for. Both sides now need to remember what they are for.

MANY AMERICANS OF JEWISH DESCENT find themselves torn in two by the tyrannical and cruel actions Israel levels upon the Palestinians. Perversely, for these people, it is not so much rampant Anti-Semitism that causes us shame at our roots, but the actions of the Israel state. I am one.

We look out and the biggest shame we feel is not so much people hating our Jewish lineage, but people hating what Israel is doing and is known for in this current era.

The reality of the day is that more and more of us here in the USA see Israel for what it has become. An instigator of suffering, a willing participant in violence and terrorism.

      Nothing to be proud of.
