Largest Crab on Earth

clipped by: Kelika
Coconut crab

As the world?s largest land-living arthropod at up to 6ft and 30 lb, there?s no way one could ignore this remarkable crab. As the name implies, the life of a typical coconut crab revolves around just that ? nuts! When young, they use the shells as temporary protection, later the coconut husk as bedding. And they love to crack the coconuts with their strong pincers to get to the delicacy inside.

Once word got out that coconut crabs are edible, considered a delicacy or even an aphrodisiac in some parts of the world, regional extinctions have been reported. However, conservation efforts are underway to maintain local coconut crab populations.

Economy soars 5.7 percent, fastest in 6 years

Gross domestic product expanded at a 5.7 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said on Friday in its first estimate for the quarter. It was a strong end to a year in which the economy shrank by 2.4 percent -- the worst performance since 1946.

The robust growth pointed to a sustainable recovery in a crucial period before government stimulus plans run out and was good news for an administration amid political difficulties.

US halts Haiti medical evacuations

The US has suspended evacuations of critically injured victims of the Haiti earthquake in a row over who will pay for their care, the military says.

"Apparently, some states were unwilling to accept the entry of Haitian patients for follow-on critical care ... without a destination to fly to, we cant move anybody," Captain Kevin Aandahl, a US transportation command spokesman, said.

"Weve temporarily suspended the flights, but that capability exists to resume," Aandahl said.

The story, first reported by the New York Times on Saturday, said flights carrying people with spinal injuries, burns and other wounds ended on Wednesday after Charlie Crist, the governor of Florida, asked the federal government for a ruling on who will pay for the medical care.

In a letter to Kathleen Sebelius, the US health and human services secretary, written on Tuesday, Crist said: "Floridas health care system is quickly reaching saturation, especially in the area of high level trauma care.

Monkeys like to keep their chatter brief - just like humans

Monkeys like to keep their conversations short and sweet very much like humans, experts revealed today.

monkeys

Formosan macaque monkeys appear to use the law of brevity in their communication just like humans

In the same way our most commonly used words, such as a, the and of,  do not take long to say.

This phenomenon is known as the law of brevity and could shed more light on the origins of human language,

The importance of keeping things brief cannot be under-estimated for these monkeys, who not only save energy by using shorter calls, but are also less likely to attract the unwanted attention of predators.

The new research adds to a growing number of studies indicating that monkey talk may not be as different from our own language as previously believed.

The law of brevity makes communication more efficient and this seems to hold across all languages.

Nigeria fighters call off ceasefire

clipped by: tabsey

Nigerias main armed group has called off a three-month-old ceasefire in the Niger delta and threatened to unleash "an all-out assault" on Africas biggest oil and gas industry.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend), responsible for years of attacks on oil facilities, said on Saturday it could no longer trust the government to negotiate demands for greater control of the regions natural resources.

The threat comes as Umaru YarAdua, Nigerias president, has been out of the country receiving medical treatment for more than two months.

His absence has raised fears of a constitutional and political crisis in the country.

"It is sufficiently clear at this point in time the government of Nigeria has no intentions of considering the demands made by this group for the control of the resources and land," Mend said in a statement.

"All companies related to the oil industry in the Niger delta should prepare for an all-out onslaught against their installations and personnel."

Rasmussen: Americans Not Buying What Obama Was Selling At SOTU

clippers remarks: On the spending freeze: Regarding another initiative detailed in the speech on Wednesday night, just nine percent (9%) of voters believe the president?s proposed freeze on discretionary spending will have a big impact on the deficit. (http://bit.ly/9w6CTH) The numbers get worse why party affiliation is taken into account. On all questions, only Democrats believe what Obama was selling and even then by small margins. The majority of Republicans and Independents simply were not buying any of it. The only silver lining for Obama is that Democrats opinion of Obama increased after the State of the Union address. There was no change for Republicans and Independents. The problem for Obama is that he is using very old Chicago style politics in a very new political era. Many voters on the right and in the middle have become much more active. They are now following political news much more closely than before.

Rasmussen has conducted a poll of how voters reacted to assertions Obama made about the economy and the results are staggering. Most voters simply do not believe the assertions Obama made about the economy by very wide margins.

On tax cuts

... just 21% of voters nationwide believe that taxes have been cut for 95% of Americans. Most (53%) say it has not happened, and 26% are not sure. Other polling shows that nearly half the nation?s voters expect their own taxes to go up during the Obama years.

On the recession

The president also asserted that ?after two years of recession, the economy is growing again.? Just 35% of voters believe that statement is true, while 50% say it is false.

On jobs

Obama claimed that steps taken by his team are responsible for putting two million people to work ?who would otherwise be unemployed.? Just 27% of voters say that statement is true. Fifty-one percent (51%) say its false.

Americans suspected of child trafficking

Haitian police were holding 10 US citizens on Saturday evening on suspicion they tried to slip out of the country with 31 Haitian children in a trafficking scheme, a government minister said.

Haitian Social Affairs Minister Yves Christallin said the police arrested five men and five women with US passports, and two Haitians, as they tried to cross into the Dominican Republic with the children on Friday night. He said two pastors were also involved, one in Haiti and one in Atlanta, Georgia.

"This is an abduction, not an adoption," said Christallin.

Christallin said the US citizens did not have the proper documents to take the children out of Haiti, nor letters of authorisation from their parents.

The children were aged two months to 12 years and had come from different places, he said.

"What is important for us in Haiti is that a child needs to have an authorisation from this ministry to leave the country," he said.

Mortality is Academic

January 30, 2010

The one guarentee we all have in this lifetime is death. This may be a grim subject but it is worth examining now and then.

Life has its own ways of bringing us the occasional "reality check" and one such instance is when it reminds us of our mortality.  This occurs when you are struck with that heavy, saddening and sometimes frightful realization that one day, you will no longer be among the living.

Anyway, I do not intend to dissect the experience itself here , but wish to make a guess as to just how often and how frequently this may occur in any given individual.

From what little I know about most people, I would guess that this experience I am speaking of occurs more frequently the farther down the economic ladder one occupies. And conversely, less frequently as one goes up the ladder and accumulates more wealth and property.

This also may partially explain the increased frequency of drug use among the poor

Police believe horrific crimes are becoming commonplace in Haiti?s tent cities, as prisoners who escaped during the quake prey on survivors. ?Bandits are taking advantage to harass and rape women and young girls under the tents,? There Was the Presidents Speech, and There Is Reality

Watching President Barack Obamas State of the Union speech makes me wonder whether the reason he tells so many fibs is that he believes them himself. Either that or he is an even better actor than he is a teleprompter reader.

Obama not only wasnt contrite about his broken promises and disastrous record; he was on the attack, daring anyone to oppose his agenda -- even in the face of the Massachusetts rebuke. But lets see how some of his statements match up with reality.

Do conservatives have better ideas? Of course. Restore market forces through tort reform, strengthening health savings accounts, abolishing government coverage mandates, allowing consumers to purchase policies across state lines and eliminating the tax laws incentivizing employer-provided health care, which unnecessarily increase demand by making prices invisible to consumers.

The largest of the river dolphins, this species is not to be confused with the Tucuxi (Sotalia fluviatilis), whose range overlaps that of theAmazon River Dolphin but is not a true river dolphin. The neck vertebrae of the Amazon River Dolphin are not fused together, and therefore the Boto is able to bend its neck in a 90 degree angle to its body, and skillfully hunt fish in the flooded forest.

Americans love their shrimp. Its the most popular seafood in the country, but unfortunately much of the shrimp we eat are a cocktail of chemicals, harvested at the expense of one of the worlds productive ecosystems. Worse, guidelines for finding some kind of "sustainable shrimp" are so far nonexistent.

In his book, Bottomfeeder: How to Eat Ethically in a World of Vanishing Seafood, Taras Grescoe paints a repulsive picture of how shrimp are farmed in one region of India. The shrimp pond preparation begins with urea, superphosphate, and diesel, then progresses to the use of piscicides (fish-killing chemicals like chlorine and rotenone), pesticides and antibiotics (including some that are banned in the U.S.), and ends by treating the shrimp with sodium tripolyphosphate (a suspected neurotoxicant), Borax, and occasionally caustic soda.

The construction of a new track, which will prolong of 400 meters the current installations, will indeed allow it the takeoff and the landing of the long-distance carriers. The offer of the airport of Girona, which will also lay out, at the end of this building site, of a carpark of 1800 places, a layby of the apparatuses and of a news tower of control, will make it possible to reach, according to its new director, Lluís Sala, not less than 30 million annual passengers, against 5 million currently

In November 2008, the Ryanair company, major to Girona, communicated its intention to connect the airport of the area in New York by a line low cost.

Has Forbes Gone Psychotic or Taken the Blue Pill?

You read that right. Apparently, Monsanto?s decades-long attempt to control the seed market -- which has led it lawsuits against small farmers and genetically modified plants that never regerminate, forcing farmers to buy seeds year after year -- is apparently just a result of their being ?too good.?

  • President Obama accepting the Nobel Peace Prize while firmly entrenched in a seemingly never-ending war spread across two countries, and

  • Time magazine naming Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke ?Man of the Year,? supposedly for ?saving? the US from ?an even worse? financial collapse than what Bernanke himself helped create.

  • Even more ironic are the media efforts to convince you that the unsustainable situation created by printing of billions of dollars to bail out failing banks and companies can be sustained indefinitely.

An intricately designed Roman implement, which dates back to 200AD, it is made from silver but has an iron blade.

It features a spoon, fork as well as a retractable spike, spatula and small tooth-pick.

Experts believe the spike may have been used by the Romans to extract meat from snails.

    The Roman army pen knife

The 3in x 6in (8cm x 15cm) knife was excavated from the Mediterranean area more than 20 years ago and was obtained by the museum in 1991.

Americans Arrested While Taking Children From Haiti

    Americans arrested in Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (Jan. 30) -- Ten Americans were detained by Haitian police on Saturday as they tried to bus 33 children across the border into the Dominican Republic, allegedly without proper documents.

The Baptist church members from Idaho called it a "Haitian Orphan Rescue Mission," meant to save abandoned children from the chaos following Haitis earthquake. Their plan was to scoop up 100 kids and take them by bus to a rented hotel at a beach resort in the Dominican Republic, where they planned to establish an orphanage.

"In this chaos the government is in right now we were just trying to do the right thing," the groups leader, Laura Silsby, told reporters at the judicial police headquarters in the capital, where the Americans were being held pending a Monday hearing before a judge.

In fact, the whole idea of a government agency targeting people (whether they are US citizens or not) for assassination seems a bit scary. How is this that much different than someone entering the US with the intent to kill people? Why is one considered a terrorist act, but the other is not? And its pretty likely that a Predator missile strike doesnt simply kill the one individual being targeted, but others around him.

U.S. citizen in CIAs cross hairs

Reporting from Washington - The CIA sequence for a Predator strike ends with a missile but begins with a memo. Usually no more than two or three pages long, it bears the name of a suspected terrorist, the latest intelligence on his activities, and a case for why he should be added to a list of people the agency is trying to kill.

The list typically contains about two dozen names, a number that expands each time a new memo is signed by CIA executives on the seventh floor at agency headquarters, and contracts as targets thousands of miles away, in places including Pakistan and Yemen, seem to spontaneously explode.

No U.S. citizen has ever been on the CIAs target list, which mainly names Al Qaeda leaders, including Osama bin Laden, according to current and former U.S. officials. But that is expected to change as CIA analysts compile a case against a Muslim cleric who was born in New Mexico but now resides in Yemen.

?We need to bring to the attention of the international public that one of the most unique fish species in the world, the Bluefin tuna, is on the brink of extinction due to the illegal fisheries driven by Japan?s insatiable demand for this expensive fish,? says Sea Shepherd Founder and President Captain Paul Watson.

Two weeks ago a single Bluefin tuna sold to Japan for £111,000.

The Mediterranean tuna industry, which is supported by tens of millions of Euros in subsidies, has driven the Bluefin to the brink of extinction. Populations are within three years of total collapse.

Ten years from now, in 2020, when we try to look back, Indian agriculture can be transformed into a healthy and vibrant system where farmer suicides have been relegated to history, where distress and despondency has been replaced by the lost pride in farming, where agriculture becomes sustainable in the long run, and does not add on to global warming.

As we enter 2010, the script for a futuristic agriculture, which brings back the smile on the face of farmers, without leaving any scar on the environment, is being rewritten.

What began as a small initiative some six years back in a non-descript village in Khamam district, has now spread to over 2 million acres in 21 districts of Andhra Pradesh. I remember when I first talked about the miracle brought about in village Pannukula in Andhra Pradesh, many thought I was simply trying to romanticise agriculture. How farming can be done without the use of chemical pesticides, I was repeatedly asked.

    Genetically Modified Seeds are Everywhere

clippers remarks: Pressure is mounting to "ok"GMO in Europe. Will they knuckle under? The latest angle; animal feed refused due to minute amounts of gmo contamination resulting in high economic fallout. Have you seen the film or read the book, "Seeds of Destruction"? (the film is free on line)

GENETICALLY modified crops are everywhere, it seems - even in Europe. Strict laws designed to keep the European Union free of unauthorised GM crops and products are not working, and are posing problems for the EUs ?150 billion livestock industry, according to farmers representatives. They say that supplies of animal feed for poultry and pigs are being refused entry at European ports when found to contain even trace amounts of unauthorised GM material.

Under Europes "zero-tolerance" laws on GM contamination, introduced in 2007, the presence of even a few seeds of unauthorised GM material will rule out an entire shipment. The animal feed industry says that the laws are unworkable because GM material is almost ubiquitous, given todays global supply chain.

Increasing numbers of GM crop varieties are on the way. At present, around 30 varieties are grown around the world, but that is predicted to quadruple by 2015, making screening trickier than ever.

The most important step is a realization that life is better when you move at a slower, more relaxed pace, instead of hurrying and rushing and trying to cram too much into every day. Instead, get the most out of every moment.

Is a book better if you speed read it, or if you take your time and get lost in it?

Is a song better if you skim through it, or if you take the time to really listen?

Is food better if you cram it down your throat, or if you savor every bite and really appreciate the flavor?

Is your work better if you?re trying to do 10 things at once, or if you really pour yourself into one important task?

Is your time spent with a friend or loved one better if you have a rushed meeting interrupted by your emails and text messages, or if you can relax and really focus on the person?

Life as a whole is better if you go slowly, and take the time to savor it, appreciate every moment. That?s the simplest reason to slow down.

Governments around the world, including those of Arab and European states, have colluded in the secret detention of terrorism suspects, UN investigators have reported

An extensive report, released on Wednesday, paints a disturbing picture of a systematic secret detention programme involving many countries.

Officials found that secret detention "may even amount to a crime against humanity".

The 222-page document, which will be presented at a forthcoming meeting of the UN Human Rights Council, is the result of several years of investigation, and notes that secret detention is "a manifold human rights violation that cannot be justified under any circumstances".

Despite clear laws that outlaw the secret detention of prisoners in both war and peace, the investigators concluded that in the years following the 9/11 attacks, several countries took part in the US-run secret detention programme.

THE United States has approved $US6.4 billion ($A7.2 billion) in weapons for Taiwan to help counter Chinas growing military, prompting Beijing to warn of serious consequences.

The arms package, approved on Friday, includes Patriot missiles, Black Hawk helicopters and communications equipment for Taiwans F-16 fleet. But it did not include new fighter aircraft, which had been part of Taipeis wish list.

The sale marks the most divisive act towards China by US President Barack Obama, whose first year was devoted to strengthening ties with Beijing despite discord on areas such as trade, human rights, internet censorship and climate change.

This is a clear demonstration of the commitment that this Administration has to provide Taiwan the defensive weapons it needs, State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said.

We think that this action is consistent with the US one-China policy ? and contributes to maintaining security and stability across the Taiwan Strait, he said.

Honda has developed a hydrogen re-filling station for the home - and it?s solar-powered.

If Honda has its way, your home will soon be transformed into a service station.

Honda has developed a next-generation solar-powered hydrogen fuelling station in the US that can be installed in your home - effectively removing the need for regular retail refilling stations.

The prototype is designed to refill a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle in an eight-hour overnight cycle. It produces half a kilo of hydrogen in that time, which is enough to replenish the supply sufficiently enough for the average everyday commute.

One of the biggest benefits of Hondas new system is that it doesnt require the costly and bulky compressor of the previous solar hydrogen refilling station. The compressor with a high differential pressure electrolyser.

The new system can also pump energy back into the grid, allowing the owner to "sell" unused electricity to an energy supplier.

Stealth fighter signals Russias resolve for power

RUSSIA conducted a successful test flight of a highly secretive stealth fighter on Friday.

The maiden flight, praised by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, is part of a rearmament program that has been initiated despite Russias pledge to significantly cut its nuclear arsenal.

Mr Putin said he wanted the first batch of T-50 stealth fighters to be in service by 2013. The fighter will be the first all-new military aircraft Russia has built since the collapse of the Soviet Union nearly two decades ago.

Russian aviation and air force officials boasted that the plane would equal if not better Americas F-22 Raptor stealth fighter.

Experts believe the development of the T-50 underlines the Kremlins determination to overhaul its ageing military hardware even as it is in nuclear arms reductions talks with the US.

Panic as tigers escape from zoo

    Clip Source: www.abc.net.au

Around 10,000 frightened visitors have been evacuated from a zoo in north-eastern India when two Bengal tigers slinked out of their cage to mingle with the crowd, officials have said.

The tigers opened the door to the iron enclosures and sneaked out while keepers disinfected the cage at the zoo in Guwahati, the main city in the state of Assam.

"Fortunately the two cats remained inside the zoo complex and did not try to venture out in the streets," zoo warden Narayan Mahanta said.

"We immediately evacuated the visitors and tried to locate the cats before tranquillising one of them relaxing by the side of a pool inside the zoo," he added.

The second tiger was tranquillised shortly after.

None of the estimated 10,000 visitors was injured but many ran for their lives upon seeing the tigers stealthily walk by.

The zoo, the largest in Indias north-east, was packed with families and students on a weekend break.

More than ever, women are travelling on their own for business or pleasure. And while their reasons for hitting the road are often similar to those of their male counterparts, solo female travellers have very different travel concerns. From issues of safety to the specific demands and practices of diverse cultures, women travellers can run into a variety of challenges best avoided through knowledge and precautions.

    Forewarned is Forearmed
Especially when travelling to a foreign country, it?s important to learn as much about the destination as possible. Religious or cultural beliefs can directly impact female travellers, compelling them to adapt dress and demeanour to local customs.

Obama to GOP: I Am Not An Ideologue. . . Right, and The Popes Not Catholic

    clipped by: merrie
clippers remarks: even though it is those very facts that have them calling him and the Congressional Democrats a bunch of fascists Obama claimed the bill to be similar to what Republicans proposed to Bill Clinton over a dozen years ago.

I dont care if Obama thinks Reagan himself would like his plan, it doesnt make Obamas policies any less radical. The very fact that he is freaking out over the GOP daring to oppose him, and the fact that the Democrats had to bribe their own party members to vote for the Senate version of the bill (which would be illegal in any other setting), is proof enough that the very core of Obamas agenda is flawed, and that he is on his way to being the biggest failure the White House has ever seen.

Obama is angry because he wanted to be the great unifier, and he figured a smile and a few choice words would woo everybody into goose-stepping with his plans.

And then, to top off his angry rant with the Republicans, he proclaimed, "I am not an ideologue!"

Barack Obama does not understand how anyone can be opposed to him. Megalomaniacs like Obama believes that all people adore him, and agree with what he is doing, and the few that do oppose him are just a small group of extremists that can easily be silenced.

During the State of the Union speech Obamas political temper-tantrum exposed itself in a more-than-an-hour long whine and cry session that included him lashing out against all that disagree with him. He attacked the conservatives, the Republicans, the Supreme Court, and even some of his fellow Democrats.

Then, to follow up that embarrassing display of childish whimpering, Obama met with House Republicans at their retreat in Baltimore and attacked them for voting against his radical, and failed, socialist agenda.

Obama called his leftist health care plan "centrist" after accusing the GOP of labeling the legislation "Bolshevik." Barry appealed to the Republicans to "look at the facts of the bill,"

Expanding support for families balancing work with caring for elderly relatives with a $102.5 million Caregiver Initiative.

I am not sure imposing new requirements on employers is a great idea with the unemployment rate climbing and jobs foremost on voters minds. Increasing child and dependent care tax credits are only beneficial if people actually have jobs to go to. Well, I dont know about the "good" part but the one-term part seems more and more likely all the time.  Obamas statement comes from an exclusive interview with Diane Sawyer.  In the interview, Obama concedes he has made mistakes particularly on health care:

"Id probably say I make a mistake a day, maybe two." One of the biggest, he said, was the confusing way in which the health bill was shaped.

    H/T: Memeorandum

But the president insisted "I didnt make a bunch of deals? I am happy to own up to the fact that I have not changed Congress and how it operates the way I would have liked."

Umm, I am not entirely sure the issue was that he didnt know what was going on... he was in on all those back room deals after all.  Reaganite Republican notes

sustainable design, green design, Urb Garden, Xavier Calluaud, urban gardening, urban food system, urban agriculture, urban farm, commercial food production

Designer Xavier Calluaud illustrates the Urb Garden?s simple step-by-step process. Scraps of food are deposited into the worm farm, creating nutritious fertilizer. Water is added and the liquid fertilizer is delivered to the plants via a drip system. The water drains down the tank and then is pumped back up to be used with the next batch of fertilizer. As the plants grow, modular bins are easily removed for harvesting and re-potting.

Modern society suffers from a lack of intimacy with its food, and the Urb Garden is designed to tackle the separation while also getting rid of the waste caused by commercial food sources. By growing food at home, consumers utilizing an Urb Garden can reduce their use of food packaging (by not buying their produce in plastic containers) and food waste (by composting and only picking what they are eating) in one fell swoop.

I, virus: Why youre only half human

    clipped by: Fast T friend
Part of our DNA (Image: Mehau Kulyk/SPL/Getty)

WHEN, in 2001, the human genome was sequenced for the first time, we were confronted by several surprises. One was the sheer lack of genes: where we had anticipated perhaps 100,000 there were actually as few as 20,000. A bigger surprise came from analysis of the genetic sequences, which revealed that these genes made up a mere 1.5 per cent of the genome. This is dwarfed by DNA deriving from viruses, which amounts to roughly 9 per cent.

On top of that, huge chunks of the genome are made up of mysterious virus-like entities called retrotransposons, pieces of selfish DNA that appear to serve no function other than to make copies of themselves. These account for no less than 34 per cent of our genome.

All in all, the virus-like components of the human genome amount to almost half of our DNA. This would once have been dismissed as mere "junk DNA", but we now know that some of it plays a critical role in our biology. As to the origins and function of the rest, we simply do not know.

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration is proposing a $200 million fund to help pay for security costs in cities hosting the trials of accused terrorists such as Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

The money will be included in a budget plan for 2011 of roughly $3.7 trillion that President Barack Obama will submit to Congress on Monday, administration and congressional aides said Saturday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the spending blueprint hasnt been announced.

The administration said late last year the trials would take place in federal court in lower Manhattan, near where the World Trade Center once stood. But theres growing opposition from the city, and it now seems likely that the White House will decide to hold the trial elsewhere.

In a previous article (written prior to Decembers changes, so now out-of-date), we also looked at things like who can find you via Facebooks own search, application security, and more.

Taking a few minutes to run through all the available privacy settings and educating yourself on what they mean could mean the world of difference to you at some later point...That is, unless you agree with Facebook in thinking that the world is becoming more open and therefore you should too.

The Dutch made and make millions from selling tulips (let that sink in for awhile) -- so being good growers -- and doing business -- is bred in their culture. Marijuana is a very useful plant. Lots of positive benefits. Better than booze. And the Dutch had a lot of Marijuana Millionaires (that guy who stop the Christmas terrorist, for example). Its not good for making people politic active, though -- thats for sure: "Will you and Alice get out of bed for Gods Sake!" I found myself saying a lot. "Put down the bag of potato chips, turn off the cartoons and come to the rally!" The Dutch called Yanks: "The starved." -- and they would thrown the leaf in the trash and laugh as they watched the Yanks go through the garbage.

Will The Tea Party Movement Fragment?

    clipped by: n2sooners

Last week, Joe Scarborough wrote that the Tea Party movement might "tear itself apart." His evidence of this: Some squabbling over a Tea Party convention in Nashville, Tenn. Well, squabbling is normal in movement politics, particularly when people think theyre being shortchanged on money and credit. But whats really striking about the Tea Party movement isnt that theres squabbling -- its how little squabbling, overall, there has been.

For starters, the movement cant fragment, because it is already fragmented. Thats a strength, not a weakness.

What todays movement most represents is the impact of technology and new media on the political process.

A combination of influences appear to be giving rise to an age in American politics in which the American people can finally be heard - and heard without the filter of the mainstream media.

whether the political class likes it or not, this sort of thing is probably here to stay

First Years: Secondhand smoke can effect sleep quality

    clipped by: murieleileen
clippers remarks: Children who live with smokers have higher rates of asthma than those who live with non-smokers. Children born to mothers who smoke during pregnancy are 10 times more likely to be born with or develop asthma.

The result, for those who unfortunately develop asthma, is a severe restriction on quality of life due to reduced lung function. That means limits on recreation, play and exercise.

Because children are still growing, and their lungs not fully developed, tobacco smoke is a strong irritant that can contribute to the cause of asthma and can trigger asthma attacks. Second-hand smoke exposure can do permanent damage to young lungs, researchers say.

Now a new study, published this month in Pediatrics, indicates children with asthma who are exposed to secondhand smoke on a regular basis at home can have severe sleep problems.

"The consequences of inadequate sleep in children are not trivial," states the report, developed by researchers at the Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center. "Sleep disturbances have been linked with increased behavior problems, mental health problems and poor school performance in children."

Other studies have found the regular presence of secondhand smoke limits the effectiveness of some asthma-control medicines, and is an unhealthy contributor to increased respiratory infection in young children.

Mukesh Doble and Trishul Artham note that manufacturers produce about 2.7 million tons of plastic containing BPA each year. Polycarbonate is an extremely recalcitrant plastic, used in everything from screwdriver handles to eyeglass lenses, DVDs, and CDs. Some studies have suggested that the BPA may have a range of adverse health effects, sparking the search for an environmentally safe way of disposing of waste plastic to avoid release of BPA.

The scientists pretreated polycarbonate with and heat and exposed it to three kinds of fungi ? including the fabled white-rot fungus, used commercially for environmental remediation of the toughest pollutants. The scientists found that fungi grew better on pretreated plastic, using its BPA and other ingredients as a source of energy and breaking down the plastic.

How to treat roses when fungus is among us

    clipped by: murieleileen

A: Let?s face an unpleasant truth: Many rose varieties are high maintenance ? and fungal diseases are among the most common problems.

It may be helpful for you to recognize conditions that cause fungal diseases. Different types of fungus, for instance, cause black spot, rust and downy mildew, and all of them multiply on damp leaves. These diseases will be more prevalent in coastal areas than further inland. Powdery mildew, however, occurs in warm inland climates.

Fungal spores are spread by splashing of water ? therefore, consider an on-the-ground watering system, rather than sprinklers. If you must sprinkle, do it early in the day, so leaves have the opportunity to dry. Some of these fungal diseases will be splashed up onto young growth when it rains.

Discourage diseases by removing all remaining leaves from the plants after pruning in the winter. Rake up and dispose of all leaves on the ground. Re-mulch to prevent splashing of water. During the growing season

Why Are Feminists Trying to Abort the Tim Tebow Pro-Life Ad?

Pro-abort blogger Jenna Henry Hansen at the Huffington Post is typical of many in her dwindling tribe who feel the need to add this caveat when discussing abortion:

Every time I discuss abortion I find it necessary to mention that pro-choice does not mean pro-abortion. A person identifying her or his self as pro-choice supports a woman?s right to choose whether or not to be a parent at that time.

Were that statement actually true, a pro-abort would spend 50% of his or her time supporting the sanctity of preborn human life and 50% supporting the killing of preborn human life.

Of course, that?s not what happens. And I don?t know why pro-aborts are so defensive about it. Abortion kills a blob of tissue at worst or a parasite at best, so they say; big deal. The fact is that pro-aborts abhor any and all support of preborn human life.  That includes conversations? for even 30 seconds.

Their hide is tanned and used to make leather goods such as shoes and handbags, whilst crocodile meat is also considered a delicacy. The most commonly farmed species are the Saltwater and Nile crocodiles, while a hybrid of the Saltwater and the rare Siamese Crocodile is also bred in Asian farms. Farming has resulted in an increase in the Saltwater crocodile population in Australia, as eggs are usually harvested from the wild, so landowners have an incentive to conserve crocodile habitat.

clippers remarks: IUNC Red List (The Amami Rabbit): http://www.iucnredlist.org/sotdfiles/pentalagus-furnessi.pdf Its evolution occurred on two small Japanese islands without any mammalian predators. Widespread habitat degradation due to logging & development has seen a significant decline in the Amami rabbit populations with only 4 sub-populations remaining. Since 1980 there has been a decline in the old growth forest by 70-90% on the islands of Amami & Tokuno. Added to this is predation by introduced mammalian species ie cats, dogs & mongoose. The Amami rabbit is protected though still faces threat through loss of habitat and predation by introduced mammalian species.

    Terrorists surgically implanting bombs

    clipped by: infidel70
BRITAIN and the US face a new al-Qaeda terror threat from so-called suicide body bombers with explosives surgically inserted inside them.

An operation by the UK intelligence service MI5 uncovered evidence that al-Qaeda was planning a new stage in its terror campaign by surgically inserting explosives inside terrorists, British newspaper The Mail on Sunday reported.

The explosive pentaerythritol tetranitrate, commonly known as PETN, would be placed in a plastic sachet inside the bomber?s body before the wound was stitched up like a normal operation incision and allowed to heal, experts said.

It would then be detonated with an injection of triacetone triperoxide, administered with syringes that could be smuggled onto planes disguised as a diabetic?s insulin kit.

The move could be an effective way to get incendiary devices past new body scanners at airports, introduced across the globe after Nigerian-born Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab smuggled PETN onto a US-bound flight in December

    Do as I say

Posted by Richard Sunday, January 31, 2010

The Mail on Sunday today is doing what it does best. It picks up the "the worlds most powerful climate scientist" and tells us: "Controversial climate change boss uses car AND driver to travel one mile to office... (but he says YOU should use public transport)".

Thus the piece presents Pachauri for what he really is ? a rank hypocrite. "You might expect Dr Rajendra Pachauri to be doing everything he can to reduce his own carbon footprint," observes the MoS. But he shows "no apparent inclination to cut global warming in his own back yard", having his personal chauffeur collect him from his £4.5million home (pictured top) in a 1.8-litre Toyota Corolla for the one-mile journey from home to his Delhi office (pictured below right).

Under normal circumstances, the affairs of a wealthy man are his own business, but these are not "normal circumstances." This is the man who told us that the Western lifestyle is unsustainable

(CNSNews.com) - Andy Stern, president of the Service Employees International Union, took a swipe at  Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) Tuesday, calling the senators ?terrorists? for their opposition to the card-check bill, which Democrats call the Employee Free Choice Act.

?There are a lot of terrorists in the Senate who think we are supposed to negotiate with them when they have their particular needs that they want met,? Stern told Bloomberg News. His comments, which appeared in BusinessWeek magazine, apparently were prompted by the senators reluctance to support the union-sponsored bill.

Katie Packer, executive director of the Workforce Fairness Institute, which opposes the card-check legislation, roundly criticized Stern over the comments.

Packer told CNSNews.com. ?It?s unthinkable the images evoked in my head when I think of the word. To accuse someone in the Senate of being a ?terrorist? for sticking up for their constituents is unbelievable.?

Take A Look At Who Created This Mess

clippers remarks: "Its a real simple thing. You know, lets look at who created the mess. The banks created this mess. Wall Street created this mess. And the super rich have had a tax break from Bush of $1.2 trillion. We can take a little bit back from the rich that have really enjoyed the last ten years in an unprecedented way, and pay for the creation of jobs that they actually destroyed."

BILL MOYERS: Your message is very clear. Tax the rich

    RICHARD TRUMKA:
Of course. Theyve had a ten year free ride.

BILL MOYERS: WALL STREET JOURNAL is going to come out next week and say Trumka says that class war is on again. And Im serious about that.

    RICHARD TRUMKA:
Well, the class wars been on, except my class has been losing.

    RICHARD TRUMKA:
Well, you know what? I think some of it is people have been so beat down, that they -- we sort of plucked the hope out of them. And what we have to do is restore that hope. They dont think that theres anything that they can do. They feel hopeless. Corporations are so powerful, and they control the political process so much that theres nothing we can do. Theyre wrong, of course. And were getting more and more people that are willing to start coming out now.
