As the name implies, the life of a typical coconut crab revolves around just that ? nuts! When young, they use the shells as temporary protection, later the coconut husk as bedding. Amazing. The US has suspended evacuations of critically injured victims of the Haiti earthquake in a row over who will pay for their care, the military says. "Apparently, some states were unwilling to accept the entry of Haitian patients for follow-on critical care ... without a destination to fly to, we cant move anybody," Captain Kevin Aandahl, a US transportation command spokesman, said. "Weve temporarily suspended the flights, but that capability exists to resume," Aandahl said. The story, first reported by the New York Times on Saturday, said flights carrying people with spinal injuries, burns and other wounds ended on Wednesday after Charlie Crist, the governor of Florida, asked the federal government for a ruling on who will pay for the medical care. System saturated Monkeys like to keep their chatter brief - just like humansclipped by: teetotumaMonkeys like to keep their conversations short and sweet very much like humans, experts revealed today. ![]() Formosan macaque monkeys appear to use the law of brevity in their communication just like humans In the same way our most commonly used words, such as a, the and of, do not take long to say. This phenomenon is known as the law of brevity and could shed more light on the origins of human language, The importance of keeping things brief cannot be under-estimated for these monkeys, who not only save energy by using shorter calls, but are also less likely to attract the unwanted attention of predators. The new research adds to a growing number of studies indicating that monkey talk may not be as different from our own language as previously believed. The law of brevity makes communication more efficient and this seems to hold across all languages. 2010 Quality of Life Index...194 Countries Rankedclipped by: leevardi2010 Quality of Life Index: 194 Countries Ranked and Rated to Reveal the Best Places to LiveEvery January, we rank and rate 194 countries to come up with our list of the places that offer you the best quality of life. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend), responsible for years of attacks on oil facilities, said on Saturday it could no longer trust the government to negotiate demands for greater control of the regions natural resources. This may be a grim subject but it is worth examining now and then. Life has its own ways of bringing us the occasional "reality check" and one such instance is when it reminds us of our mortality. Anyway, I do not intend to dissect the experience itself here , but wish to make a guess as to just how often and how frequently this may occur in any given individual. From what little I know about most people, I would guess that this experience I am speaking of occurs more frequently the farther down the economic ladder one occupies. And its pretty likely that a Predator missile strike doesnt simply kill the one individual being targeted, but others around him. Usually no more than two or three pages long, it bears the name of a suspected terrorist, the latest intelligence on his activities, and a case for why he should be added to a list of people the agency is trying to kill. The list typically contains about two dozen names, a number that expands each time a new memo is signed by CIA executives on the seventh floor at agency headquarters, and contracts as targets thousands of miles away, in places including Pakistan and Yemen, seem to spontaneously explode. No U.S. citizen has ever been on the CIAs target list, which mainly names Al Qaeda leaders, including Osama bin Laden, according to current and former U.S. officials. Safety in knowledge
Tips for solo female travellers
More than ever, women are travelling on their own for business or pleasure. And while their reasons for hitting the road are often similar to those of their male counterparts, solo female travellers have very different travel concerns. From issues of safety to the specific demands and practices of diverse cultures, women travellers can run into a variety of challenges best avoided through knowledge and precautions.
Forewarned is Forearmed
Especially when travelling to a foreign country, it?s important to learn as much about the destination as possible. Religious or cultural beliefs can directly impact female travellers, compelling them to adapt dress and demeanour to local customs.

Obama to GOP: I Am Not An Ideologue. . . Right, and The Popes Not Catholic
clipped by: merrieclippers remarks: even though it is those very facts that have them calling him and the Congressional Democrats a bunch of fascists Obama claimed the bill to be similar to what Republicans proposed to Bill Clinton over a dozen years ago.
I dont care if Obama thinks Reagan himself would like his plan, it doesnt make Obamas policies any less radical. The very fact that he is freaking out over the GOP daring to oppose him, and the fact that the Democrats had to bribe their own party members to vote for the Senate version of the bill (which would be illegal in any other setting), is proof enough that the very core of Obamas agenda is flawed, and that he is on his way to being the biggest failure the White House has ever seen.
Obama is angry because he wanted to be the great unifier, and he figured a smile and a few choice words would woo everybody into goose-stepping with his plans.
And then, to top off his angry rant with the Republicans, he proclaimed, "I am not an ideologue!"

The Urb Garden Helps Urban Gardeners Grow Food at Home
clipped by: Socratoadclippers remarks: Interesting feasible concept

Designer Xavier Calluaud illustrates the Urb Garden?s simple step-by-step process. Scraps of food are deposited into the worm farm, creating nutritious fertilizer. Water is added and the liquid fertilizer is delivered to the plants via a drip system. The water drains down the tank and then is pumped back up to be used with the next batch of fertilizer. As the plants grow, modular bins are easily removed for harvesting and re-potting.
Modern society suffers from a lack of intimacy with its food, and the Urb Garden is designed to tackle the separation while also getting rid of the waste caused by commercial food sources. By growing food at home, consumers utilizing an Urb Garden can reduce their use of food packaging (by not buying their produce in plastic containers) and food waste (by composting and only picking what they are eating) in one fell swoop.
I, virus: Why youre only half human
clipped by: Fast T friend
WHEN, in 2001, the human genome was sequenced for the first time, we were confronted by several surprises. One was the sheer lack of genes: where we had anticipated perhaps 100,000 there were actually as few as 20,000. A bigger surprise came from analysis of the genetic sequences, which revealed that these genes made up a mere 1.5 per cent of the genome. This is dwarfed by DNA deriving from viruses, which amounts to roughly 9 per cent.
On top of that, huge chunks of the genome are made up of mysterious virus-like entities called retrotransposons, pieces of selfish DNA that appear to serve no function other than to make copies of themselves. These account for no less than 34 per cent of our genome.
All in all, the virus-like components of the human genome amount to almost half of our DNA. This would once have been dismissed as mere "junk DNA", but we now know that some of it plays a critical role in our biology. As to the origins and function of the rest, we simply do not know.

Lots of positive benefits. Better than booze. And the Dutch had a lot of Marijuana Millionaires (that guy who stop the Christmas terrorist, for example). Its not good for making people politic active, though -- thats for sure: "Will you and Alice get out of bed for Gods Sake!" I found myself saying a lot. "Put down the bag of potato chips, turn off the cartoons and come to the rally!" The Dutch called Yanks: "The starved." -- and they would thrown the leaf in the trash and laugh as they watched the Yanks go through the garbage.
The store will sell chemicals, soil, containers, lights and kits. Basically everything you need to grow your own marijuana. They store will also include a staff of people called ?the grow squad? who can assist with questions. They will make house calls as well. A doctor will also be on the site to give examination, prescriptions and issue a legal identification card.

clipped by: syncopathFirst Years: Secondhand smoke can effect sleep quality
clipped by: murieleileenclippers remarks: Children who live with smokers have higher rates of asthma than those who live with non-smokers. Children born to mothers who smoke during pregnancy are 10 times more likely to be born with or develop asthma.
The result, for those who unfortunately develop asthma, is a severe restriction on quality of life due to reduced lung function. That means limits on recreation, play and exercise.
Because children are still growing, and their lungs not fully developed, tobacco smoke is a strong irritant that can contribute to the cause of asthma and can trigger asthma attacks. Second-hand smoke exposure can do permanent damage to young lungs, researchers say.
Now a new study, published this month in Pediatrics, indicates children with asthma who are exposed to secondhand smoke on a regular basis at home can have severe sleep problems.
"The consequences of inadequate sleep in children are not trivial," states the report, developed by researchers at the Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center. "Sleep disturbances have been linked with increased behavior problems, mental health problems and poor school performance in children."
Other studies have found the regular presence of secondhand smoke limits the effectiveness of some asthma-control medicines, and is an unhealthy contributor to increased respiratory infection in young children.

The fungus among us: An eco-friendly way of decomposing BPA-containing plastic
clipped by: murieleileenclippers remarks: Fungi may provide an eco-friendly way of decomposing polycarbonate plastic waste that contains bisphenol A. Credit: American Chemical Society
Just as cooking helps people digest food, pretreating polycarbonate plastic ? source of a huge environmental headache because of its bisphenol A (BPA) content ? may be the key to disposing of the waste in an eco-friendly way, scientists have found. Their new study is in ACS Biomacromolecules, a monthly journal.

Mukesh Doble and Trishul Artham note that manufacturers produce about 2.7 million tons of plastic containing BPA each year. Polycarbonate is an extremely recalcitrant plastic, used in everything from screwdriver handles to eyeglass lenses, DVDs, and CDs. Some studies have suggested that the BPA may have a range of adverse health effects, sparking the search for an environmentally safe way of disposing of waste plastic to avoid release of BPA.
The scientists pretreated polycarbonate with ultraviolet light and heat and exposed it to three kinds of fungi ? including the fabled white-rot fungus, used commercially for environmental remediation of the toughest pollutants. The scientists found that fungi grew better on pretreated plastic, using its BPA and other ingredients as a source of energy and breaking down the plastic.
After 12 months, there was almost no decomposition of the untreated plastic, compared to substantial decomposition of the pretreated plastic, with no release of BPA.
How to treat roses when fungus is among us
clipped by: murieleileenA: Let?s face an unpleasant truth: Many rose varieties are high maintenance ? and fungal diseases are among the most common problems.
It may be helpful for you to recognize conditions that cause fungal diseases. Different types of fungus, for instance, cause black spot, rust and downy mildew, and all of them multiply on damp leaves. These diseases will be more prevalent in coastal areas than further inland. Powdery mildew, however, occurs in warm inland climates.
Fungal spores are spread by splashing of water ? therefore, consider an on-the-ground watering system, rather than sprinklers. If you must sprinkle, do it early in the day, so leaves have the opportunity to dry. Some of these fungal diseases will be splashed up onto young growth when it rains.

Why Are Feminists Trying to Abort the Tim Tebow Pro-Life Ad?
clipped by: infidel70Pro-abort blogger Jenna Henry Hansen at the Huffington Post is typical of many in her dwindling tribe who feel the need to add this caveat when discussing abortion:
Every time I discuss abortion I find it necessary to mention that pro-choice does not mean pro-abortion. A person identifying her or his self as pro-choice supports a woman?s right to choose whether or not to be a parent at that time.
Were that statement actually true, a pro-abort would spend 50% of his or her time supporting the sanctity of preborn human life and 50% supporting the killing of preborn human life.

Of course, that?s not what happens. And I don?t know why pro-aborts are so defensive about it. Abortion kills a blob of tissue at worst or a parasite at best, so they say; big deal. The fact is that pro-aborts abhor any and all support of preborn human life. That includes conversations? for even 30 seconds.

They sprayed me with some kind of hot sauce. I couldnt see. They pulled me into the cell and hit me ? boom, boom. They hit me so much, I swear to God, like a hundred times.
About halfway through, they used a comb ? thick and long, about 10 inches, with a handle. Theyd taken the teeth out and sharpened it like a knife.

Terrorists surgically implanting bombs
clipped by: infidel70An operation by the UK intelligence service MI5 uncovered evidence that al-Qaeda was planning a new stage in its terror campaign by surgically inserting explosives inside terrorists, British newspaper The Mail on Sunday reported.

It would then be detonated with an injection of triacetone triperoxide, administered with syringes that could be smuggled onto planes disguised as a diabetic?s insulin kit.
