Clip Source: www.strudel.org.uk
The International Year of Astronomy 2009 is almost over. It has been a busy year full of events the world over. If youve not yet taken part in a global event, you still have chance on New Years Eve when the Moon will be full.

The Moon is full every moon-th but this will be the second full Moon of this calendar month. This doesnt happen too often and is commonly named a Blue Moon. "Blue" is just the name for it and the Moon wont actually turn that shade. In fact, if anything, the Moon may actually go slightly red tomorrow night because there will also be a partial eclipse visible from Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and bits of Canada. Greatest eclipse will be at 19:22 UT.

Join people around the world taking a Blue Moon Walk, look up, observe the Moon and welcome in 2010.

Phatic communication - in small talk, the container is more important than the content

Definition:

Small talk: the nonreferential use of language to share feelings or establish a mood of sociability rather than to communicate information or ideas; ritualized formulas intended to attract the attention of the listener or prolong communication. See also:

Coined by the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski, from the Greek, "spoken"

Free TV May Soon Cost Money

    clipped by: wiccantexan
    Clip Source: www.ksat.com
For more than 60 years, TV stations have broadcast news, sports and entertainment for free and made their money by showing commercials. That might not work much longer.

The business model is unraveling at ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox and the local stations that carry the networks programming. Cable TV and the Web have fractured the audience for free TV and siphoned its ad dollars. The recession has squeezed advertising further, forcing broadcasters to accelerate their push for new revenue to pay for programming.

That will play out in living rooms across the country. The changes could mean higher cable or satellite TV bills, as the networks and local stations squeeze more fees from pay-TV providers such as Comcast and DirecTV for the right to show broadcast TV channels in their lineups. The networks might even ditch free broadcast signals in the next few years. Instead, they could operate as cable channels -- a move that could spell the end of free TV as Americans have known it since the 1940s.

Anthrax Case Linked to Drumming Circle

A New Hampshire woman who is critically ill with gastrointestinal anthrax most likely swallowed spores while participating in a community drumming circle, state health officials said Tuesday.

Investigators found traces of anthrax on two African drums and an electrical outlet in the room where the event took place, Dr. Talbot said, and are theorizing that the woman swallowed spores that were aerosolized by the drumming. The state has not identified the woman because of privacy concerns.

Dr. Talbot said the anthrax detected on the drums was a naturally occurring strain that frequently appears in soil. Animals that ingest contaminated soil can pass the disease to people who handle their hides. Most of the drums at the session were made with animal hides, she said.

In 2007, two people in Connecticut were treated for cutaneous anthrax traced to animal hides used to make African drums. And in 2006, a drum maker in New York contracted inhalation anthrax. All three survived.

So what? David Bowie wore make up?

He was a good student; he didnt do drugs and he didnt get into trouble.

I did notice, however, that he was buying womens clothing

I joked around with him about his nice ass and he accused me of sexual harassment. I said, ?Well, if you are going to dress like a woman, get used to it.?

    So on it went.

I loved my son and would accept him for who he his no matter what that would turn out to be.

He yelled back, ?I was just trying to freak you out and it didnt work!

So, thank you David Bowie. You have no idea how you helped me deal with the trials of teenagers.

The spacecraft will be the first to flyby Pluto, the planet or dwarf planet or plutoid, and on to the other objects lurking in the Kuiper Belt at the edge of the solar system.

While the craft is hibernating most of the time while it awaits its July 2015 rendezvous with Pluto, it was roused for a Jupiter flyby that yielded some gorgeously detailed images of that planet and its satellites.

New Horizons action will come in an action-packed nine day period around July 14, 2015 when the craft approaches and then passe by Pluto.

    Dry Toilets Provide Ecological Solution

clippers remarks: We have what we call a "composting toilet" in the woodland. If human solids and liquids are kept apart, there is no smell at all, and all you have to do add a couple of pinches of sawdust instead of flushing. I wouldnt put the resulting sweet smelling compost on the veg garden because being at the top of the food chain too many heavy meals and chemicals are contained in human waste. It is good for grass and trees though. And no water is used at all. It is much more hygenic than spreading waste around in water, too, since it is all kept in one container until it is "done".
    Clip Source: www.ipsnews.net
But thanks to an innovative community project, her family now has a shower and what is known as a dry toilet, which operate using alternative, non-polluting ecological systems - a far cry from the buckets that the family used to use, which were simply emptied into a nearby unlined pit.

The project helps local residents install dry toilets - an ecological sanitation solution that saves water, separates urine from solid waste, and returns nutrients contained in human feces to agriculture, by converting waste into manure after a special treatment process.

The aim of ecological sanitation is to recover nutrients that would otherwise be discarded.

"First we carried out a study with people who work in the different institutions. The ecological sanitation approach was introduced, and already functioning systems were visited and studied. Then on that basis, we began to design, with this inter-institutional team, a strategy to get the community involved," he said.

I was inspired to write it after looking at a series of photos labeled "The Decade in Pictures" that made me feel very sad about this past decade. After looking at them my only thought was that hopefully we are all so fed up with the way things have been that we can rally together to bring about a better decade ahead. The potential impact of social media gives me great hope! Oh, and i didnt realize that written posts didnt make their way into the Amplify Newsfeed of Public Timeline...i ought to rethink that
The beauty of social media is that we?re now talking and listening to people that we never would have had the opportunity to connect with. We are learning, without even trying or realizing it most of the time, that there are so many shades of gray in the world. That our own ways of seeing and doing things may not be right. That there may not always be a right. That other people?s ways we?ve always judged so harshly may actually be right.

Social media is not for or about marketers.

And if you have smokers around you it will also be more complicated. But maybe you can convince your partner or one of your friends to give up smoking together because you can derive more strength in numbers.

    The Apocryphal Gospels

    clipped by: valencia
    clippers remarks: WTH

The apocryphal gospels are gospels written in the early centuries of Christianity (including canonical, but these were not subsequently accepted by The  Catholic Orthodox Church). St. Irenaeus of Lyons proposed it in the late Second century and they have remained like that since then. The Catholic Church recognizes only the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John

    the-apocryphal-gospels

The content, so much of the apocryphal gospels, as that of the canonical ones, is based on what the apostles heard, saw and said while they were walking with Jesus preaching their doctrines and then in the resurrection of the Son of God.

A very important aspect of the Apocryphal Gospels is the Gnostic Gospels. These gospels caused major problems for the Catholic religion, since they say we should find God within us.

the truth of the Obama presidency is laid bare: retrenchment abroad, and redistribution and the intrusive regulatory state at home. This is the genuine calling of Barack Obama, and of the "progressives" holding him to account. The false dichotomy has taken hold?either we care for our own, or we go abroad in search of monsters to destroy or of broken nations to build. The decision to withdraw missile defense for Poland and the Czech Republic was of a piece with that retreat in American power.

In the absence of an overriding commitment to the defense of American primacy in the world, the Obama administration "cheats." It will not quit the war in Afghanistan but doesnt fully embrace it as its cause. It prosecutes the war but with Republican support?the diehards in liberal ranks and the isolationists are in no mood for bonding with Afghans. (Harry Reids last major foreign policy pronouncement was his assertion, three years ago, that the war in Iraq was lost.)

Does Death Exist? New Theory Says No

    clipped by: thisnamecantbetaken
clippers remarks: This was clear with the death of my sister Christine. After viewing her body at the hospital, I went out to speak with family members. Christines husband - Ed - started to sob uncontrollably. For a few moments I felt like I was transcending the provincialism of time. I thought about the 20-watts of energy, and about experiments that show a single particle can pass through two holes at the same time. I could not dismiss the conclusion: Christine was both alive and dead, outside of time.
One well-known aspect of quantum physics is that certain observations cannot be predicted absolutely. Instead, there is a range of possible observations each with a different probability.

Although individual bodies are destined to self-destruct, the alive feeling - the Who am I?- is just a 20-watt fountain of energy operating in the brain. But this energy doesnt go away at death. One of the surest axioms of science is that energy never dies; it can neither be created nor destroyed. But does this energy transcend from one world to the other?

Death does not exist in a timeless, spaceless world. In the end, even Einstein admitted, "Now Besso" (an old friend) "has departed from this strange world a little ahead of me. That means nothing. People like us...know that the distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion." Immortality doesnt mean a perpetual existence in time without end, but rather resides outside of time altogether.

    Gravity Mysteries: What is Gravity?

    clipped by: thisnamecantbetaken
clippers remarks: There are still two problems with this, though. First, we have yet to find any proof of the existence of these hypothetical particles, which have been dubbed "gravitons". Secondly, when quantum field theory is applied to gravity, it is prone to give nonsensical answers to straightforward questions. "These are fundamental obstructions that need to be overcome,"

Seven things that dont make sense about gravity
We tend to think of gravity as a force that affects objects, but Einstein showed it was something else entirely (Image: Alex Telfer Photography Limited / Getty)

You jump up, and gravity brings you back down

That, at least, was how it seemed until Einstein came along. His general theory of relativity tells us that gravity is not quite that simple.

General relativity describes gravity as geometry. The fabric of the universe - the four dimensions of space and time

created by the presence of mass and energy.

gravity is not what one body does directly to another, but what a bodys mass does to the surrounding universe.

Nevertheless, treating gravity as if it were a straightforward force, as Newton did, has served us well.

Einsteins description has stood up equally well

Yet useful as they are, neither the Newtonian model nor relativity is a fundamental explanation for gravity. We still dont know how the fundamental, quantum properties of mass, energy and space-time combine to create the phenomenon.

We do have an idea, though.

This picture is known as quantum field theory.

there ought to be particles that deliver the gravitational force.

Will GOP Call to Repeal Health Care Bill?

    clipped by: dl211
clippers remarks: Repealing the health care bill, however, would take more than winning back a few congressional seats. Just as the Republican minority in the Senate has stalled the current health care debate, a Democratic minority could do the same to any repeal measure unless Republicans were able to pull together at least a 60-vote majority. The GOP would also have to overcome the strong majority Democrats now have in the House. Even if they were to win both chambers back, President Obama could veto any repeal measure at least through 2012. "Anyone who thinks theyll be able to repeal ObamaCare is kidding themselves," Michael Cannon, director of health policy studies at the libertarian Cato Institute, told the Washington Independent. "If they want to stop it, they need to stop it now."

Prominent conservatives are calling for congressional Republicans to campaign in 2010 on a pledge to repeal the Democrats sprawling health care legislation, but political and logistical realities could make repealing the bill a promise that is hard to keep.

"I suspect every Republican running in 10 and again in 12 will run on an absolute pledge to repeal this bill," former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday on NBCs "Meet the Press." "The bill ?- most of the bill does not go into effect until 13 or 14, except on the tax increase side; and therefore, I think there wont be any great constituency for it. And I think itll be a major campaign theme."

Is the world about to gain another Leonardo da Vinci painting?

The multitasking Renaissance genius who produced the most famous portrait in the world -- Mona somebody -- left us only 10 to 20 other paintings. Yet if current whispers bear out about a picture in Boston, that number may increase by one more. Art experts say its the equivalent of stumbling upon a surprise Shakespeare play or a lost Homeric epic.

Mystery man: Da Vinci still has allure, above in undated drawing.

At this point, we have only a tantalizing mystery -- perhaps the unspooling of a new Da Vinci code -- dangling on the slender thread of secrets and a handful of clues that emerged this week:

-- The Washington Post receives a tip from a source who wishes to remain anonymous that the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has in its possession a painting believed to be by the Italian master, and is in the process of authenticating it. Were it deemed a true Leonardo, such a painting would be only the second one in all the Americas. (The first hangs here, in the National Gallery of Art.)

Ninth Circuit Court Delivers Landmark Taser Ruling

The 9th Circuit issued what may be a landmark ruling on tasers, and not a moment too soon:

In a case out of San Diego County, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals criticized an officer who, without warning, shot an emotionally troubled man with a Taser when he was unarmed, yards away, and neither fleeing nor advancing on the officer.

As lawsuits have proliferated against police and Taser International, which manufactures the weapons, the nations appellate courts have been trying to define what constitutes appropriate Taser use.

A three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit affirmed the trial judges ruling on Monday, concluding that the level of force used by the officer was excessive.

Some lawyers called it a landmark decision.

Eugene Iredale, a San Diego lawyer who argued the case, said it was one of the clearest and most complete statements yet from an appellate court about the limits of Taser use.

Like Convergence, Aggregation Is Better In Theory

It looks great on paper, and some people will carry a Swiss Army Knife with them everywhere, but most wont.

There always seems to be a tug of war in technology between those who want a converged, multi-purpose device that does everything, or those who want a dedicated device that does one thing (or just a few things) extremely well. For every successful hulking converged printer/copier/scanner/fax machine device, there are utilities like toasters or microwaves that just do one specific function. The truth is that when differing technologies converge, it usually leads to a single unsatisfying experience where none of the functions are high quality. More common is the practice of product diversification, where one device turns into a family of devices, with differing features for differing price points.

    Colour and Psyche

You have just moved into a new apartment and your partner offers to paint the room in bright red? Does the idea not convince you? It is well known that this is the colour of strong feeling and life force. It would therefore be ideal as a stimulant for nights of passion, but it is right to rest well, since it has an effect that induce sleep. To achieve this end, it?s better to choose a blue or yellow pastel.

    coloured-lips

Each colour has certain reactions and emotions?in fact; each of the colours that the human eye can see is electromagnetic radiation emitted by a particular wavelength of light. These are perceived by photoreceptors in the retina and reach the brain as electrochemical impulses. It appears that colours can be perceived even by the blind. The vibrations of the electromagnetic radiation would be well received through the skin.

Monopoly Capitalism Is the Root of All of Americas Problems

    clipped by: thisnamecantbetaken
clippers remarks: The indoctrination is that we live in a market economy that determines globalization and everything else. I don?t know why this generation of Americans was more gullible. I can?t understand that. But it?s just a fact and we need to wake up. This systemic risk is a result of monopolists preaching efficiency because they want to take cash out of the system. For example, let?s say they have two machines, and sell one. They get money for the machine they sell, and then the one left over will be more expensive to use so they can charge more for its use. They pocket the money from the machine they sell and get more money off the one machine they have left. The problem, though, is they only have one machine left. If something goes wrong, we can have huge systemic failures. Treasury to dole out USD 3.8 billion more for GMAC
    Clip Source: www.alternet.org
Something is rotten in the state of American capitalism, and if you agree with Barry C. Lynn, almost all stinky paths lead to the monopolization of our economy. The rise of behemoths like Wal-Mart and Viacom are not only lowering the quality and safety of the products you use, but also undermining our so-called democracy.

Q: So what happens if we don?t reverse the monopolization of our economy?

BL: There?s two main types of problems. One is that antimonopoly law is a political law -- not economic, as you might suspect. You prevent monopolies because you don?t want a concentration of economic power that gives beneficiaries political power. So monopolies are a huge political problem.

We essentially have a merger of Goldman Sachs and the Treasury Department. So we don?t actually know who?s running the Treasury. We have a political crisis, in which we?ve had a coup by the bankers. And the bankers don?t only control banks but also all the large corporations.

    Look at things now.

The PTSD Nation - America the Traumatized

    clipped by: thisnamecantbetaken
clippers remarks: This breaking of the national psyche was bound to happen; its been decades in the making. American exceptionalism -- the idea that we are somehow better and more blessed than any other people on the face of the earth -- was bound to fail as our nation, like every other before it, found itself caught in the grinding wheels of history. The 2000 election, 9/11, Enron and WorldCom, Afghanistan, Iraq on a lie, Abu Ghraib, the USA Patriot Act, Guantánamo, Katrina and near economic collapse: each of these -- and many, many others -- challenged our sense of national identity, giving the lie to who we thought we were, and compromising a sense of safety, however delusional, that we once enjoyed. No longer were Americans exempt from the perils that face other nations. sneaked up behind us and whacked us in the head.
    Clip Source: www.alternet.org
Its been one helluva decade, even though weve reached the end without knowing what to call it. Some have tried "the aughts," others the "double-Os." Im content to simply call it over.

Yet for describing its character, nothing comes closer than the Decade of Trauma -- American trauma, that is.

weve endured a decade that shattered nearly every notion of what it meant to be an American, whether you live on the left or the right. And so we shout. Or hide. Or startle too easily.

In America today, it seems we all have a touch of post-traumatic stress disorder, as evidenced by our increasingly vitriolic political environment, where reality is denied and histrionics run riot. Anger, were told, is the natural reaction to trauma; in people with PTSD, the anger is out of control. By that measure, the millennial decade has brought us 10 years of PTSD politics -- with no end in sight.

national politics have moved beyond the bounds of extreme partisanship into the realm of mental illness.

Hogmanay is the Scots1 word for the celebration to welcome the New Year. Traditionally it runs from noon on 31 December to noon on 1 January, but it is now generally taken to mean the whole new year festive period; the festivities often continue well into the new year and even into 2 January as well. It is a time of hope and looking forward to a better year.

A clock depicting the second between 2006 and 2007.

    History and Origins

The celebration of Hogmanay can be traced back to the pagan practices of sun and fire worship in mid-winter. The Roman festival of Saturnalia involved great festivities with lots of wine and food, as well as more lascivious goings-on. The Vikings celebrated Yule, beginning on the shortest day of the year with sacrifices to the Norse gods and continuing for a number of days. The customs of Hogmanay probably combine elements of both of these with elements of druidic winter solstice practices2.

Faith in Free-Market Capitalism Is Being Rewarded

As a result, jobs are likely to start rising early in 2010.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- If the nation ever faces a large-scale attack by a biological weapon like anthrax, the U.S. Postal Service will be in charge of delivering whatever drugs and other medical aid Americans would need to survive.

In an executive order released Wednesday, President Barack Obama put the Postal Service in charge of dispensing medical countermeasures to biological weapons because of its capacity for rapid residential delivery.

While most likely unrelated, the release of the executive order comes less than a week after a man with alleged ties to al-Qaida tried to bring down a Detroit-bound U.S. airliner. In recent days, Obama has sought to assure the public that his administration is doing what it can to protect the nation from terrorist attacks.

Under the new order, federal agencies must develop a response plan that includes possible law enforcement escorts for Postal Service workers and gives anthrax primary threat consideration.

A study involving hundreds of children ages 2 to 9 showed the more a child was spanked the lower his or her IQ score compared with others their age four years after the initial intelligence test. Since kids were followed over time, researchers could rule out the possibility that those with less brainpower cause more trouble and thus elicit more spanking. The researchers suggest various potential causes of the link, including the idea that spanking is a traumatic experience that can adversely affect the noggin. Another idea: By using hitting rather than words or other means of discipline, parents could be depriving kids of learning opportunities.

The five men, who were kidnapped from a government ministry building in Baghdad in 2007, were reportedly taken to Iran just a day after their abduction where they were held by the al-Quds brigade of the Guard.

An unnamed former Revolutionary Guard told The Guardian: "It was an Iranian kidnap, led by the Revolutionary Guard, carried out by the al-Quds brigade.

"My contact works for al-Quds. He took part in the planning of the kidnap and he watched the kidnapping as it was taking place. He told me that they spent two days at the Qasser Shiereen camp. They then took them deep inside Iran."

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Republican attorneys general in 13 states say congressional leaders must remove Nebraskas political deal from the federal health care reform bill or face legal action, according to a letter provided to The Associated Press Wednesday.

"We believe this provision is constitutionally flawed," South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster and the 12 other attorneys general wrote in the letter to be sent Wednesday night to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

"As chief legal officers of our states we are contemplating a legal challenge to this provision and we ask you to take action to render this challenge unnecessary by striking that provision," they wrote.

In a rare Christmas Eve vote, Senate Democrats pushed sweeping health care legislation to the brink of Senate passage, crushing a year-end Republican filibuster against President Barack Obamas call to remake the nations health care system.

Sometime During The Night and Early Morning of Dec 29-30 1916, Grigory Rasputin Is Murdered by Russian Nobles

    clipped by: merrie
clippers remarks: Fearful of Rasputin?s growing power (among other things, it was believed by some that he was plotting to make a separate peace with the Germans), a group of nobles, led by Prince Felix Youssupov, the husband of the czar?s niece, and Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, Nicholas?s first cousin, lured Rasputin to Youssupov Palace on the night of December 29, 1916.

First, Rasputin?s would-be killers gave the monk food and wine laced with cyanide. When he failed to react to the poison, they shot him at close range, leaving him for dead. A short time later, however, Rasputin revived and attempted to escape from the palace grounds, whereupon his assailants shot him again and beat him viciously. Finally, they bound Rasputin, still miraculously alive, and tossed him into a freezing river. His body was discovered several days later and the two main conspirators, Youssupov and Pavlovich were exiled.

December 29-30, 1916, Grigory Efimovich Rasputin, a self-proclaimed holy man, is murdered by Russian nobles eager to end his influence over the royal family.

Rasputin, a Siberian-born muzhik, or peasant, who underwent a religious conversion as a teenager and proclaimed himself a healer with the ability to predict the future, won the favor of Czar Nicholas II and Czarina Alexandra through his ability to stop the bleeding of their hemophiliac son, Alexei, in 1908. From then on, though he was widely criticized for his lechery and drunkenness, Rasputin exerted a powerful influence on the ruling family of Russia, infuriating nobles, church orthodoxy, and peasants alike. He particularly influenced the czarina, and was rumored to be her lover. When Nicholas departed to lead Russian forces in World War I, Rasputin effectively ruled the country through Alexandra, contributing to the already-existing corruption and disorder of Romanov Russia.

What are the Symptoms of Heart Attacks in Women?

Until recently, research on heart attacks focused mainly on men. However, studies now show that some of the symptoms of heart attacks in women are different from those in men.

Too often, the signs of heart attacks go unnoticed in women (by themselves, their family and their doctor). They may think that other health problems or drug side effects are causing their symptoms or that the symptoms will go away on their own. As a result, women dont always get the health care they need to prevent complications or death from a heart attack.

Chest pain is the most common symptom in both sexes, but women may also experience these other symptoms:

  • unusual fatigue that gets worse with activity

  • difficulty breathing

  • heartburn that is unrelieved by antacids

  • nausea and/or vomiting that is unrelieved by antacids

  • anxiety

  • tightening and pain in the chest that may extend into the neck, jaws and shoulders

  • general feeling of weakness

  • paleness

  • sweating.

Many groups are observing the one-year anniversary of the Gaza "Cast Lead" campaign, which is part of the many-year war against Gaza, with no end in sight.

Last year, in playwright Caryl Churchills Seven Jewish Children, characters debated what to tell a child who is asking about pictures of dead Gazan babies she sees on the television.

Churchills play was condemned as anti-Semitic. Frankly, I think it gave the Israelis more credit than they deserved. Because it assumed that children knew about what was transpiring in Gaza

Well, I was here during the Gaza campaign, and my unprofessional impression is that nobody asked questions, because nobody paid attention, because nobody gave a shit. I mean nobody gave a shit.

    "Cast Lead".

we liberated ourselves from the ropes of Jewish heritage and morality that have been binding us for years.

There, in that besieged strip of land, we revealed the crystal-clear truth to ourselves, unadorned and free of shame.

Lunar Eclipse on New Years Eve

On New Years Eve the Earth will cast a shadow deep into space onto the Moon, our nearest neighbour, in a partial lunar eclipse. Incidentally, the Full Moon on New Years Eve will be a Blue Moon - the second Full Moon in the month.

This will be the first eclipse of the Moon to be seen on a New Years Eve since 1656, thats 353 years ago. So this is a unique way to ring out 2009 and ring in 2010, the year of our 20th Birthday, so why not start your celebrations with an "Eclipse Party" and tell us how you got on?

e partial lunar eclipse rings out a very successful United Nations International Year of Astronomy, where over 160 nations came together to celebrate 400 years of astronomy, since Galileo first pointed his telescope at the night sky. 2010 is another year to celebrate, as it is Astronomy Irelands 20th birthday, and will be packed full of events.

US security agencies were "insufficiently aggressive" in pursuing leads on the Detroit bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, President Obama will be told in an official report into the attempted terrorist attack on Christmas Day.

Detroit bomber: US intelligence insufficiently aggressive in pursing leads

The CIA and other agencies failed to chase up leads on the Detroit bomber, a report will say

Intelligence agencies including the CIA and the National Security Agency (NSA) also failed to share key information about the would-be suicide bomber which could have prevented him boarding the Northwest Airlines flight carrying a home-made bomb, the report says.

Mr Obama has furiously denounced the "systemic" failures which allowed Nigerian Abdulmutallab, 23, to slip through the net.

There are also widespread reports that Mr Obama has ordered generals to draw up a list of targets for retaliatory air strikes on al-Qaeda camps in Yemen, where Abdulmutallab was given explosives training.

    green-card marriage scam

    clipped by: dl211
clippers remarks: To cover up the scam, some obtained drivers licenses under aliases before marrying. Camarillo and others prepared fake divorce decrees, tax returns, birth certificates and Social Security numbers cards. The documents helped fool immigration officials, who didnt necessarily verify that they were legitimate, Bleil said. The scam began to unravel after an informant told U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement about Camarillo in July 2004. When Olga Hernandez and her husband went to the Citizenship and Immigration Services office in 2005 for an interview, the couple were placed in separate rooms. Discrepancies surfaced during questioning, and eventually Hernandez broke. She told officers shed just been just trying to help a friend and withdrew the petition for a green card.

Texas grandmother led big green-card marriage scam

    photo

FORT WORTH ? For more than two decades, Maria Refugia Camarillo played matchmaker for her family members.

Camarillo, known as Cuca, found spouses for her children, her nieces, a nephew and even her three teenage grandchildren, all of whom lived within two blocks of each other.

The marriages were not only arranged, they were also lucrative. Since 1980, Camarillo arranged some 170 matches between more than a dozen of her relatives and foreigners willing to pay cash to marry Americans and get green cards. With fees of up to $12,000 per marriage, the scheme garnered more than $1 million, authorities estimate.

Federal prosecutors describe it as one the largest green-card marriage scams in the country and say it was unique because it was a family enterprise. Authorities say the 72-year-old Camarillo and her family avoided detection through identity theft, document fraud and immigration system savvy.

Obama and Our Post-Modern Race Problem

America still has a race problem, though not the one that conventional wisdom would suggest: the racism of whites toward blacks. Old fashioned white racism has lost its legitimacy in the world and become an almost universal disgrace.

    steele

Mr. Obama won the presidency by achieving a symbiotic bond with the American people: He would labor not to show himself, and Americans would labor not to see him. As providence would have it, this was a very effective symbiosis politically. And yet, without self-disclosure on the one hand or cross-examination on the other, Mr. Obama became arguably the least known man ever to step into the American presidency.

Our new race problem?the sophistication of seeing what isnt there rather than what is?has surprised us with a president who hides his lack of economic understanding behind a drama of scale. Hundreds of billions moving into trillions.

In a new essay Half Guilty, Nick Kam explores the legal ramifications of a thought experiment: if a conjoined twin commits murder, can the legal system punish them? Could the innocent twin be punished simply for their unusual medical condition?

Kam, a third-year student at the University of San Francisco School of Law, is currently working on the piece, which he has excerpted on his website. He asks to imagine a scenario where a conjoined twin commits murder and the murderers twin is completely innocent of the crime. This, incidentally, is the plot of the 1951 exploitation film Chained for Life, starring Violet and Daisy Hilton, pictured above, and Kam cites a historical record of such a murder occurring in 17th century Italy. Kam then wonders whether such a conjoined twin could be punished under the American legal system.

    Crotchbombers Alarming Last Phone Call

The CIA official compiled two more robust reports following the meeting with the suspects father. One was sent back to CIAs Langley, Va., the other remained in draft form in Nigeria and was not circulated until after the attempted attack on Christmas Day, according to a U.S. official.

Current and former officials of the Nigerian government, including a source close to the suspects family, say Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, called his father from Yemen with the warning that it would be his last contact.

ABC News sources said that during Abdulmutallabs final call, he told his father the call would be his last contact with the family. He said that the people he was with in Yemen were about to destroy his SIM card, rendering his phone unusable.

A senior U.S. official briefed on the matter tells ABC News that the phone call prompted the father to contact Nigerian intelligence, fearing that his son might be planning a suicide mission in Yemen. The Nigerian officials brought Mutallab directly to the CIA station chief in Abuja Nov. 19

No rise of atmospheric carbon dioxide in past 160 yrs..new research finds

    clipped by: jatfla
clippers remarks: So...can we get on with more important things? Of course there are changes in climate. I think we learned about that in elementary school.

Most of the carbon dioxide emitted by human activity does not remain in the atmosphere, but is instead absorbed by the oceans and terrestrial ecosystems. In fact, only about 45 percent of emitted carbon dioxide stays in the atmosphere.

However, some studies have suggested that the ability of oceans and plants to absorb carbon dioxide recently may have begun to decline and that the airborne fraction of anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions is therefore beginning to increase.

To assess whether the airborne fraction is indeed increasing, Wolfgang Knorr of the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Bristol reanalyzed available atmospheric carbon dioxide and emissions data since 1850 and considers the uncertainties in the data.

In contradiction to some recent studies, he finds that the airborne fraction of carbon dioxide has not increased either during the past 150 years or during the most recent five decades.

China Willing to Spend Big on Afghan Commerce

A delegation from the state-owned Chinese company, China Metallurgical Group Corporation, visited the site of a copper mine in Aynak, a former al-Qaeda stronghold southeast of Kabul, in 2007.

KABUL, Afghanistan ? Behind an electrified fence, blast-resistant sandbags and 53 National Police outposts, the Afghan surge is well under way.

But the foot soldiers in a bowl-shaped valley about 20 miles southeast of Kabul are not fighting the Taliban, or even carrying guns. They are preparing to extract copper from one of the richest untapped deposits on earth. And they are Chinese, undertaking by far the largest foreign investment project in war-torn Afghanistan.

Two years ago, the China Metallurgical Group Corporation, a Chinese state-owned conglomerate, bid $3.4 billion ? $1 billion more than any of its competitors from Canada, Europe, Russia, the United States and Kazakhstan ? for the rights to mine deposits near the village of Aynak.

We should perhaps discount what was said in May. For, as I have attempted to document in detail here, here, here, here, here, and here, President Obama is a gentleman, and, as such, he is never unintentionally rude. He is, in fact, a master of the insulting gesture, which he seems to reserve for political opponents, such as Hillary Clinton, John McCain, and Sarah Palin, and for political leaders in countries, such as England, France, Germany, Israel, and Poland, which were closely associated with the United States prior to the Age of Obama.

This time, however, Barack Obama may be genuinely tired, and he may be depressed as well. He certainly has warrant. In public, he may claim that he deserves a B+ for his first year in office, but the polling data suggests that he has earned a failing mark, and he has to know better.

As I observed in an earlier post, if Barack Obama harbored any doubts as to whether he was leading his party off a cliff, William Daley ?

Montana Paves Way For Assisted Suicide

    clipped by: wiccantexan

The Supreme Court in Montana has ruled that nothing in the states law prevents patients from seeking medical assistance to commit suicide.

The ruling paves the way for Montana to become the third US state alongside Washington and Oregon to allow patients to seek the procedure.

The decision comes a year after a lower court ruled it constitutional.

Doctors will now be able to prescribe the necessary drugs to the terminally ill without fear of prosecution.

The states Supreme Court said there was nothing in its precedent showing that doctor-assisted suicide was against public policy.

However, it did not go as far the district court, which ruled last year that the right of terminally-ill patients to ask their doctors to help them die was protected by the states constitution.

Haskell and his wife, Lori, were aboard Flight 253 when Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab allegedly tried to destroy the plane. They say another man tried to help Abdulmutallab board the plane in Amsterdam.

"Today is the second worst day of my life after 12-25-09. Today is the day that I realized that my own country is lying to me and all of my fellow Americans. Let me explain.

Ever since I got off of Flight 253 I have been repeating what I saw in US Customs. Specifically, 1 hour after we left the plane, bomb sniffing dogs arrived. Up to this point, all of the passengers on Flight 253 stood in a small area in an evacuated luggage claim area of an airport terminal. During this time period, all of the passengers had their carry on bags with them. When the bomb sniffing dogs arrived, 1 dog found something in a carry on bag of a 30 ish Indian man. This is not the so called "Sharp Dressed" man.

The GOP Self-Help, Blame Obama Game

    Lead Photo

So if the Republicans are doing it, why not make it work for you too?  Lets blame Obama for our own shortcomings just like the Republicans do. It really works!  Here is the formula:

    1) (Name Problem) 2) Make vague connection through association (fake association ok) 3) Blame Obama

    Examples:

    A. (Economic crisis due to neglect by clueless president).  There were Democrats in the House and Senate during the Bush presidency (disregard that they were the minority party). Obama is a Democrat, therefore the economic crisis is Obamas fault.

    B. (Cannot figure out how to house-break the dog). President Obama also owns a dog. It is President Obamas fault that you cant housebreak your dog, because dogs are becoming too dependent on government.

    C. (You dont take home enough money). The President has not raised taxes, but people say that he will. It is Obamas fault you dont take home enough money because someday your taxes could possibly go up.

CIA suicide bomber was invited on base, report claims

The suicide bomber who killed seven CIA employees at a remote base in south-eastern Afghanistan was being courted as an informant and had been invited onto the base, according to a report.

The bombing , which came as President Barack Obamas surge is gathering pace, represented the biggest loss of life suffered by the US intelligence agency since an attack in Beirut in 1983. The CIA said on Thursday a further six agents had been injured in the attack.

On Thursday night it was reported that the bomber had been invited onto the base and had not been searched.

A former senior intelligence official told the Associated Press that the man was being courted as an informant and that it was the first time he had been brought inside the camp.

The official said a senior and experienced CIA debriefer came from Kabul for the meeting, suggesting that the purpose of the session was to gain intelligence.
