The Holy Grail could be in Kilwinning

clipped by: thisnamecantbetaken

Kilwinning is thought to be the resting place of the Holy Grail after information was found to suggest The Templars had a major presence in the town.

The Irvine Herald can reveal an historic archaeological dig is to take place in the town?s Abbey grounds.

Jamie Morton, a recognised expert on Freemasonry, revealed the artefact used by Christ at The Last Supper could have been hidden in the town by the Knights Templar.

He based his theory on historical documents he has uncovered and the town?s close connections with The Masonic Order.

?Several places have been pinpointed but all of them are false, I have found that Kilwinning and nearby Irvine had the highest concentration of Templar Knights in Scotland.

?I am interested to know what lies beneath this street as there are wells underneath the surface, who knows what?s buried there??

If Mr Morton?s theory is proved, Kilwinning could hold the keystone to re-writing history

A street scene from the paintbrush of a child usually involves triangle-topped boxes for houses. And often an unnaturally large dog.

But Kieron Williamsons attempts are so beautifully rendered that artists ten times his age will be filled with envy.

Experts have said that the six-year-olds atmospheric paintings, which began with harbour scenes and expanded to include rural vistas, animal portraits and landmarks, have perspective, shadow and reflections that demonstrate an ability well beyond his years.

Gone Are the Days of Wine and Roses

clippers remarks: Politicians are happy to blame the recession for depriving citizens of programs they have come to expect. The recession didnt create the gap between state government commitments and state government resources. It only exposed it.
Clip Source: www.reason.com
The days of wine and roses have been affordable due to a cascade of tax revenue. In state after state, the governments take has ballooned. Overall, the average persons state tax burden has risen by 42 percent since 1999?nearly 50 percent beyond what the state would have needed just to keep spending constant, with allowances for inflation.

California illustrates the problem. Adam Summers of the libertarian Reason Foundation in Los Angeles has calculated that if it "had simply limited its spending increases to the 4.38 percent average annual increase in the states consumer price index and population growth each years since fiscal year 1990-91, the state would be sitting on a $15 billion budget surplus right now."

Illinois is another problem child. The states general fund appropriation is some two-thirds higher today than it would be if the state had just kept those outlays in line with inflation over the last two decades.

Sympathy for Americas Devils

clipped by: Antara
For the past decade, the sight of Western liberals gathering in defense of terrorists seeking to impose a medieval patriarchal cult on the rest of the world by force seems incongruously odd. What is there about Islam that is so appealing to the erstwhile defenders of minorities, women and gays-- all of whom have next to no rights under Islam?

Looking over tomes by liberal authors that argue that Islam is truly feminist, progressive and shares all their basic values, the rational observer is forced to wonder, "Who exactly are they kidding?" The answer is a complicated one, but the problem is not as new as it seems.

The far left and the far left have a longstanding affinity for playing, "The Enemy of my Enemy is my Friend", with America designated as the primary enemy, and everyone from the headmasters of the guillotine to Al Queda has emerged as their friends.

Ireland said Wednesday it is to accept two detainees from Guantanamo Bay, the latest European country to help U.S. President Barack Obama fulfill his pledge to close the controversial camp.

The two men, reportedly Uzbeks, are expected to travel to Ireland in the "next couple of months," Justice Minister Dermot Ahern said after informing U.S. ambassador Dan Rooney of the decision.

The move follows a visit by Irish officials to Washington and the Guantanamo camp, on the island nation of Cuba.

A definite timetable has yet to be established, (but) the transfer of the two detainees is expected within the next couple of months,? he said.

Last week, in The Times and on my blog, I?ve been ranting about one particularly blatant money-grab by U.S. cellphone carriers: the mandatory 15-second voicemail instructions.

Suppose you call my cell to leave me a message. First you hear my own voice: ?Hi, it?s David Pogue. Leave a message, and I?ll get back to you??and THEN you hear a 15-second canned carrier message.

* Sprint: ?[Phone number] is not available right now. Please leave a detailed message after the tone. When you have finished recording, you may hang up, or press pound for more options.?

You hear a similar message when you call in to hear your own messages.

WHY ELSE WOULD I BE CALLING?

Good heavens: it?s 2009. WE KNOW WHAT TO DO AT THE BEEP.

we?re PAYING for these messages.

If Verizon?s 70 million customers leave or check messages twice a weekday, Verizon rakes in about $620 million a year.

A Cloud Of Hairspray And Cigarette Smoke

clippers remarks: ?Some people still say hostesses are wasting their life away,? he said. ?But rather than criticizing them, Japan should create more jobs for young women.?

Is this bothersome to anyone else besides me that women are yet again reinforced they have to be dependent upon their looks and appeal to men to earn their own money? Beauty fades. They aint gonna be young forever and its obvious there is pressure to take it a step further into prostitution.
Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

The women who pour drinks in Japan?s sleek gentlemen?s clubs were once shunned because their duties were considered immodest: lavishing adoring (albeit nonsexual) attention on men for a hefty fee

But behind this trend is a less-than-glamorous reality. Employment opportunities for young women, especially those with no college education, are often limited to low-paying, dead-end jobs or temp positions.

?It?s only when you?re young that you can earn money just by drinking with men,? said Mari Hamada, 17.

Hostessing does not involve prostitution, though religious and women?s groups point out that hostesses can be pressured into having sex with clients, and that hostessing can be an entry point into Japan?s sprawling underground sex industry.

Hostesses are often ranked according to popularity among clients, with the No. 1 of each club assuming the status of a star.

Trust Me, Were Just Friends

What was so hard to grasp, I wondered, about two people who enjoyed each others company and had things in common becoming friends?

Why is every relationship between women and men assumed to be sexual?

We assume, as Billy Crystal did in the film When Harry Met Sally, that its difficult for men and women to be friends because "the sex part always gets in the way."

The fact is, it doesnt.  And you miss a lot of potentially great pals if you think it does.

Some of the richest friendships of my life have been with men for whom I had zero physical attraction.

I would hope that by now, in a more gender-neutral and sexual orientation-sensitive world friends can just be friends and lovers can still be lovers.  It would be one less thing to worry about.  And one more pleasure to enjoy, no innuendo implied.

Clip Source: www.express.co.uk
SECOND World War hero General George S Patton was murdered by an American assassin to cover up Allied blunders which cost thousands of lives, according to a new book.

Story Image

The CIA deliberately caused the car crash which left the general with a broken neck in an attempt to silence him, military historian Robert Wilcox claims.

He was then allegedly killed by poison as he lay paralysed in his hospital bed in Heidelberg, Germany.

Mr Wilcox believes Gen Patton ? known as Old Blood and Guts ? was killed because he was going to reveal a series of disastrous mistakes made by the Supreme Allied Command, including future president Dwight D Eisenhower.

The writer tracked down former US government assassin Douglas Bazata, who he claims admitted his role in Gen Patton?s death.

?He confessed to me that he had caused Patton?s ?accident? and that he had been ordered to do so by Office of Strategic services boss General William ?Wild Bill? Donovan.?

They say that money can?t buy it, but a new exhibition tracing the history of Russian weddings reveals how and why many of us are still putting a hefty price tag on happiness.

The Topography Of Happiness, which makes its global premiere in Moscow today (July 24th), covers more than 100 years of marital history in an effort to explain why modern newlyweds often feel obliged to spare no expense when forking out for the happiest day of their lives.

The researchers decided to examine marriage not just because it symbolises happiness, but because it has spawned its own "happiness industry", in which the "perfect day" seems to be something that can be bought from a catalogue. The study is the first such examination of modern economies of happiness - and of modern weddings from this perspective.

"The idea of happiness as something which can be bought is historically very new,"

Particular attention is given to the tension-reduction and optimal uncertainty theories of musical enjoyment. Professor Glenn Wilson considers whether there is any truth in the claim that listening to music can increase intelligence in the listener (the so-called Mozart Effect). - Gresham College

Holder?s Statement Marks Clean Break With Bush Administration

WASHINGTON ? During a hearing before a Senate Appropriations Subcommittee today, Attorney General Eric Holder announced that ending the practice of racial profiling is a ?priority? for the Obama administration. In response to a question from Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), Holder described the use of race, ethnicity or national origin by law enforcement officers in making routine or spontaneous decisions as ?simply not good law enforcement.?

In October, the American Civil Liberties Union expressed concern over controversial changes made to FBI internal guidelines governing investigations that allow agents to use intrusive measures without evidence of wrongdoing. These changes, which went into effect in December, opened the door to racial profiling.

Rorschachs original work used only form, color and movement; currently, another major determinant considered is shading.[32]

Any attempt to assemble an exhaustive list of the Bay Areas infamous urban lexicon is an impossible task because our slanguage evolves at a ridiculous pace. That said, Rafael Casal of The Getback Crew does a great job of compressing a good number of current Bay Area slang words in a very short amount of time, without sacrificing clarity (unless of course you dont speak the language).

And if you dont understand some of the terminology, just pause the video frequently so that you can study up on the definitions. Oakland may have shot down ebonics education in the schools many years ago, but that doesnt mean you dont have hella vocab words to learn.

    tupperware

The New Hampshire native grew up on farms in Massachusetts. Tupper developed a business selling his parents? produce door-to-door, but scraped through high school, barely graduating.

On the other hand, he took some correspondence courses and was convinced the secret to success was in advertising and marketing. He likened himself to Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, and dreamed up hundreds of inventions.

Despite Tupper?s dreams to become a famous millionaire, he received nothing but rejection letters from the manufacturers he approached with his ideas. He started a tree-trimming business to support himself, but it went bankrupt in the throes of the Great Depression.

The secret of its success is simple: Just keep a lid on it.

He has been making the journey for so long that all First Bus drivers have now been told to look out for him to ensure he gets off at the right stop.

"I couldnt believe it at first, but it explains a lot. He loves people and we have a bus stop right outside our house so that must be how he got started - just following everyone on.

Rob Stonehouse (corr), one of the drivers on the route, said: "He usually just curls up at the back of the bus. Sometimes he nips between peoples legs but he never causes any trouble."

Casper has travelled an estimated 20,000 miles but Mrs Finden says because he is getting old the drivers often have to shuffle him off at the right stop.

A spokeswoman for First Bus said the firm has put a notice up in the office asking them to look after the non-paying passenger.

    Number of illegal immigrants drops

WASHINGTON, July 30 (UPI) -- There are fewer illegal immigrants in the United States than two years ago a non-partisan think tank in Washington said Thursday.

The Center for Immigration Studies estimates the number of illegal immigrants dropped nearly 14 percent in two years. The center said the number of new illegal immigrants may have fallen by one-third in the same period.

    Fewer undocumented immigrants

have been apprehended trying to cross the border, the report said.

The illegal immigrant population was estimated to be 12.5 million at its peak and 10.8 million now, The Hill reported.

"It is sometimes argued that illegal immigrants are so permanently attached to their lives in the United States that they would never return to their home countries," the CIS report said. "The findings of this report contradict this view."

The drop came before the economic downturn, and the CIS concluded increased enforcement led to the decrease.

The Nankai Trough last ruptured twice in 1944 and 1946, generating earthquakes greater than magnitude 8 that shook the region and caused deadly tsunamis. Since then, the two plates have continued to move, but the boundary between them has been locked, causing pressure to build.

What the Failure of the "Massachusetts Model" Tells Us About Health Care Reform

    clipped by: merrie
clippers remarks: Program costs have skyrocketed. Despite tax increases, the program faces huge deficits. The state is considering caps on insurance premiums, cuts in reimbursements to providers, and even the possibility of a "global budget" on health care spending" with its attendant rationing.

A shortage of providers, combined with increased demand, is increasing waiting times to see a physician.

With the ?Massachusetts model? frequently cited as a blueprint for health care reform, it is important to recognize that giving the government greater control over our health care system will have grave consequences for taxpayers, providers, and health care consumers. That is the lesson of the Massachusetts model.
    Clip Source: www.cato.org

When Massachusetts passed its pioneering health care reforms in 2006, critics warned that they would result in a slow but steady spiral downward toward a government-run health care system. Three years later, those predictions appear to be coming true:

  • Although the state has reduced the number of residents without health insurance, 200,000 people remain uninsured. Moreover, the increase in the number of insured is primarily due to the states generous subsidies, not the celebrated individual mandate.
  • Health care costs continue to rise much faster than the national average. Since 2006, total state health care spending has increased by 28 percent. Insurance premiums have increased by 8?10 percent per year, nearly double the national average.

  • New regulations and bureaucracy are limiting consumer choice and adding to health care costs.

Aura Dazzles, But It Takes Persuasion To Close The Deal

    clipped by: merrie
clippers remarks: But it turns out that Obama is not so good at argument. Inspiration is one thing, persuasion another. He created the impression on the campaign trail that he was familiar with major issues and readily ticked off his positions on them. But he has not proved so good at legislating.

One reason, perhaps, is that he has had little practice. He served as a legislator for a dozen years before becoming president, but was only rarely an active one. He spent one of his eight years as an Illinois state senator running unsuccessfully for Congress and two of them running successfully for U.S. senator. He spent two of his years in the U.S. Senate running for president. During all of his seven non-campaign years as a legislator, he was in the minority party.

In other words, hes never done much work putting legislation together -- especially legislation that channels vast flows of money and affects the workings of parts of the economy that deeply affect peoples lives.

Aura dazzles, but argument gets things done. Consider the debate on the Democrats health care bill and the increasingly negative response to Barack Obamas performance. Democrats have the numbers to pass a health care bill -- 256 votes in the House, 38 more than the 218 majority; 60 votes in the Senate, enough to defeat a filibuster. But they havent come up with the arguments, at least yet, to put those numbers on the board. Its something not many predicted that bright January inauguration morning.

We knew that day that Obama was good at aura, at generating enthusiasm for the prospect of hope and change. His inspiring speeches -- the Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner in Des Moines, the race speech in Philadelphia, the countless rallies in primary and caucus and target states -- helped him capture the Democratic nomination and then win the presidency by the biggest percentage margin in 20 years.

They know what the life cycle of a bill is, they know who to talk to, they know what theyre talking about -- and they reach everybody.?"

Lazy, incompetent bastards with their hands out ?

Truth be told, most legislators lack the type of technical expertise to craft a legislative initiative and are quite willing to allow lobbyists and their ?staff? to write the bill. All overlaid with lawyerly loopholes, exceptions and ambiguous language which benefits the special interests over the citizens.

    Bottom line ?

The Obama Administration is hell-bent on making everything an emergency which requires legislation to be ramrodded through the legislative process.
We need to take back our government ? to make the politicians more afraid of the citizens they purport to represent than the lobbyists with their pockets full of cash ?

?But for most lawmakers, resisting the armies of health-care lobbyists who are deployed to protect industry interests has proved difficult. ?Basically, the cards are stacked against the member who has to confront these groups,? said George F. Grob, who conducted numerous Medicare reviews through the Department of Health and Human Services inspector generals office. "Look at who theyre confronting -- the cancer doctors. Drug companies saying, Were the ones saving lives out there. Hospitals saying, Were going to have to shut down. "

    The revolving door ?

No matter how many Congressional initiatives have attempted to close the revolving door between lobbying by former legislators and the current legislative staffs, it simply is too self-serving to actually close the door.

A recent study found that solar thermal power could provide 25 percent of the worlds electricity needs if investments increased and the technology was put in place.  That makes the new design by Stirling Energy Systems for harvesting that energy particularly compelling.

The company claims it has come up with a new solar thermal system that is simpler than other versions of the technology and will make the energy cheaper.  The company plans to start building large solar power plants using this design within the next year.

What will you do when you are not allowed into the workplace without the vaccine paperwork? Buy groceries? Go to the bank? Shop anywhere?? Get on a plane, bus or train? Use the toilet in the mall? Nope. Police officers will become loathed, feared, despised and remembered for their ?official? duties.

Less government control is always good? The private sector is always first-rate? Free market capitalism is the cure-all? Even for health care?!

Firefighting used to be a private for-profit industry.

there were private "clubs" or "gangs" who were in charge of putting out fires. The infamous Boss Tweed started his illustrious political career at a volunteer fire company.

the first club at the scene got money from the insurance company.

They also often ended up getting in fights over territory and many times buildings would burn down before the issue was resolved. They were glorified looters. It was corrupt, bloated and expensive -- but at least it wasnt the much maligned "government controlled."

Around the time of the Civil War, firefighting in big cities was reformed and taken over by the government. Currently firefighters in most major metropolises are trained by the government, employed by the government and given health care -- wait for it -- by the government.

TONIGHT, you or someone you love will likely be visited by a vampire ? on cable television or the big screen, or in the bookstore

It all started nearly 200 years ago.

One was created by Mary Godwin, soon to become Mary Shelley, whose Dr. Frankenstein gave life to a desolate creature.

John William Polidori stitched together folklore, personal resentment and erotic anxieties into ?The Vampyre,? a story that is the basis for vampires as they are understood today.

The vampire may originate from a repressed memory we had as primates

Perhaps at some point we were ? out of necessity ? cannibalistic.

Monsters, like angels, are invoked by our individual and collective needs. Today, much as during that gloomy summer in 1816, we feel the need to seek their cold embrace.

For as his contagion bestows its nocturnal gift, the vampire transforms our vile, mortal selves into the gold of eternal youth, and instills in us something that every social construct seeks to quash: primal lust.

Some parts of the country are seeing an increase in reported snakebites this summer, according to national and state poison control centers.

The American Association of Poison Control Centers receives around 2,000 reports of snakebites each year. The actual number of cases may be much higher since many bites go unreported. Cities in central Texas and southern California have seen an increase in snakebites in recent months.

Douglas Borys of the Central Texas Poison Center says in the month of June, reported cases in the region were up 35% from 2008. All of Texas saw a 6% increase.

The fire in the Triangle Shirtwaist factory was a murder, a ghastly, horrible murder, and one that will be duplicated again and again while building owners are permitted, for the sake of saving a few hundred dollars, to endanger the lives of countless workers. That such a tragedy would occur has been foretold over and over again. Chief Croker of the Fire Department has issued repeated warnings. All of them fell on deaf ears. To carry out the necessary reforms would have cost money, and money is sacred and must be protected. Human life is not sacred and may be sacrificed endlessly.

Immediately after the Newark disaster there was a great flurry and much talk. Conditions exactly similar to those in Newark were pointed out here. Demands were made for safeguarding buildings in which people were employed.

    Just what is poor?

clippers remarks: This is not to comment on the experience of poverty or the rights and wrongs of who gets what, just to show how the system works. So here are some curiosities about poverty. It might improve during the recession, not because the poor get richer, and nor because the poor do, but because those who are on benefits could stay where they are but the median might fall. Romanian pensioners can have much less money than UK pensioners but fewer of them be described as poor. Thats because they are closer to the median person in their country, not because they have more money. In fact, they are simply bunched together at what others would consider the bottom.<< The interactive graphic couldnt clip, you have to visit the source.Very interesting.

Many people might think of poverty as absolute, the lack of certain basic amenities, but politicians measure it in relative terms. So we could see poverty fall during the recession, writes Michael Blastland in his regular column.

Are you poor? Well, it depends on the income of someone youve never met.

Poverty can be a puzzle, or at least the way its measured. News this week, for example, was that UK pensioners suffer worse poverty than Romanian , even though four times richer.

Intrigued? Use our interactive graphic to find out whos poor by moving the smiley faces around and watching the boundaries change.

The median is always the person in the middle. It doesnt matter to the median whos on what income, only how many are on either side.

Youll also see as you move the median smiley that the pink poverty zone grows or shrinks. Poverty is defined as below 60% of the median. So as median smileys income grows, so does the zone in which other smilies are labelled poor.

Afghanistan during the Anglo-Afghan war of 1838-42, by Fredrick Engels (1857)
"The conquest of Afghanistan seemed accomplished, and a considerable portion of the troops were sent back. But the Afghans were noways content to be ruled by the Feringhee Kaffirs (European infidels), and during the whole of 1840 and 41, insurrection followed on insurrection in every part of the country. The Anglo-Indian troops had to be constantly on the move.... Thus ended the attempt of the British to set up a prince of their own making in Afghanistan."

    Health Care Realities

    clipped by: debbyski
clippers remarks: "Still, most Americans do have health insurance, and are reasonably satisfied with it. How is that possible, when insurance markets work so badly? The answer is government intervention. Most obviously, the government directly provides insurance via Medicare and other programs. And surveys show that Medicare recipients are much more satisfied with their coverage than Americans with private insurance. So here?s the bottom line: if you currently have decent health insurance, thank the government Right-wing opponents of reform would have you believe that President Obama is a wild-eyed socialist, attacking the free market. But unregulated markets don?t work for health care ? never have, never will. To the extent we have a working health care system at all right now it?s only because the government covers the elderly, while a combination of regulation and tax subsidies makes it possible for many, but not all, nonelderly Americans to get decent private coverage."
    Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

At a recent town hall meeting, a man stood up and told Representative Bob Inglis to ?keep your government hands off my Medicare.? The congressman, a Republican from South Carolina, tried to explain that Medicare is already a government program ? but the voter, Mr. Inglis said, ?wasn?t having any of it.?

It?s a funny story ? but it illustrates the extent to which health reform must climb a wall of misinformation. It?s not just that many Americans don?t understand what President Obama is proposing; many people don?t understand the way American health care works right now. They don?t understand, in particular, that getting the government involved in health care wouldn?t be a radical step: the government is already deeply involved, even in private insurance.

And that government involvement is the only reason our system works at all.

Bing has put the number of web pages at "over 1 trillion", while Google had earlier indexed more than one trillion discreet web addresses.

The current global population stands at more than 6.7 billion, which means that there are about 150 web addresses per person in the world.

And this could mean that if a person spent just one minute reading every website in existence, then he or she would be kept busy for 31,000 years, without any sleep.

"An average person would need six hundred thousand decades of nonstop reading to read through the information," News.com.au quoted Bing as saying.

If we look back on the 20th century, it?s easy to spot people who were considered truly evil, nasty folks like Hitler, Stalin and Mao, devils who ruthlessly killed millions of people, yet had a very high opinion of themselves!

It amazes me how people will warp and distort reality in order to conform to the own mindset.

Adolph Hitler though that he was a really swell, up-front nice guy, a true gentleman who loved dogs and kids.

Hitler saw himself as a stand-up guy

Sustainability: The Clue That Could Solve Fermis Paradox

If civilizations cant grow exponentially, that might explain why we dont see any signs of ET.

The size and age of the universe makes it seem probable that many advanced societies ought to exist.

This problem has since become known as the Fermi Paradox, and many a canteen lunch has been spent discussing its resolution (we discussed one possible solution a few months back).

The problem is that this kind of growth may not be possible, and they look at Earth as an example. For any expansion to be sustainable, the growth in resource consumption cannot exceed the growth in resource production. And since Earths resources are finite, and it has a finite mass and receives solar radiation at a constant rate, human civilization cannot sustain an indefinite, exponential growth.

Haqq-Misra and Baum say that this argument means that any extraterrestrial civilization must be similarly constrained.

We need to bring about changes that make health care affordable, accessible and available to the millions of Americans that want health care insurance, but either can?t afford it or are denied for reasons such as a pre-existing condition.

To addresses these and other fundamental reforms that are necessary to improve our health care system, Congressman Fleming is proud to be an original co-sponsor of the Empowering Patients First Act.

This bill preserves the important decisions made between an individual physician and the patient and improves the quality of care offered across the country.

Together we will work to ensure that any plan that is good enough for American families is good enough for every member of Congress.

Military planning for possible H1N1 outbreak

The military, as they would for a natural disaster or other significant emergency situation, could provide support and fulfill any tasks that civilian authorities could not, such as air transport or testing of large numbers of viral samples from infected patients.

As a first step, Gates is being asked to sign a so-called ?execution order? that would authorize the military to begin to conduct the detailed planning to execute the proposed plan.

Orders to deploy actual forces would be reviewed later, depending on how much of a health threat the flu poses this fall, the officials said.

(CNN) ? The U.S. military wants to establish regional teams of military personnel to assist civilian authorities in the event of a significant outbreak of the H1N1 virus this fall, according to Defense Department officials.

The proposal is awaiting final approval from Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

The officials would not be identified because the proposal from U.S. Northern Command?s Gen. Victor Renuart has not been approved by the secretary.

The plan calls for military task forces to work in conjunction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. There is no final decision on how the military effort would be manned, but one source said it would likely include personnel from all branches of the military.

It has yet to be determined how many troops would be needed and whether they would come from the active duty or the National Guard and Reserve forces.

America vs. Slavery; Veterans in Prison; Sarah Palins Next Stop?

    Hey Changemakers,

While much of the country obsesses about the debate over health care reform and the continued recession, its easy to overlook issues that dont impact us personally.

But as consumers in a global economy we still have an enormous impact on the rest of the world whether or not we pay attention, and this market power can be used for good or bad.

This week, former U.S. State Department Ambassador Mark Lagon wrote an article for Change.orgs Human Trafficking blog about one issue we all have influence over: slavery used to create products across the globe.

To address this issue, Ambassador Lagon urges that the U.S. government create a public list of products made by forms of slavery and human trafficking and the countries where these products were produced.

The goal? To inform consumers about potentially tainted products and to provide consumers and shareholders leverage to fight slavery across the globe.

Less than half of Republicans believe that Barack Obama was born in the United States of America, a new public opinion poll finds.

Only 42 percent of Republican respondents in a Research 2000 survey, conducted for the liberal website Daily Kos, said they thought Obama was a natural born citizen; 28 percent said they did not believe Obama was born in the United States; 30 percent said they were not sure.

The responses, which were gathered after several prominent conservative media personalities fed suspicion that Obama was unconstitutionally holding office, show the extent to which the conspiracy has taken hold in the GOP.

That only a plurality of Republicans were willing to acknowledge the president was born in America is nothing short of astounding, considering the preponderance of evidence that confirms his Hawaiian birth.

Ninety-three percent of Democrats say the president was born in the United States, as do 83 percent of independents.

Cash for Clunkers Runs Out of Gas

White House officials and lawmakers were studying late Thursday how to keep alive the governments cash-for-clunkers incentive program because of concerns the programs $1 billion budget may have been exhausted after just one week.

Obama administration officials warned congressional leaders Thursday it planned to suspend the program at midnight. But the White House released a statement late Thursday saying that completed deals would be honored and the program is still under review.

Lawmakers are discussing with White House officials where to find funding -- including possibly tapping the governments Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP, a congressional aide said.

Congress had expected the $1 billion set aside for the rebates to last several months and set up the program to expire Nov. 1.

With deficits soaring, lawmakers are increasingly reluctant to spend additional billions they dont have.

If you?re looking for the back story, you can read my description here. This new image is really something. The colors are not precisely natural, but close: three filters that pass red, green, and blue light were used to approximate a true-color picture. In reality, the filters used let through a very narrow range in each color, while our eyes detect a much wider range; that?s why I said "approximate". I?m guessing that narrow-band filters were used because Jupiter is hideously bright, so those filters would allow for decent exposure times without frying the camera.

During a hearing on Capitol Hill in early July, a top official at the Federal Reserve warned Congress to stay out of the bankers? business and not force the privately owned and operated central bank to submit to a public audit.

On July 9 The Financial Times reported on Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul?s landmark ?Audit the Fed? legislation (H.R. 1207), which would remove any remaining proscriptions on federal authorities investigating the Federal Reserve Bank, which serves not only as the U.S. central bank but is increasingly acting as the top banker to the world. So far Paul?s bill has picked up 261 co-sponsors, well over half the membership in the House.

Michael Egnor, M.D. is a professor of neurosurgery and pediatrics at State University of New York, Stony Brook and an award-winning brain surgeon who has been named one of New York?s best doctors by New York Magazine.

Dr. Engor says, among other things,

Despite his strong scientific credentials, he advanced theories in the 1970?s and 1980?s that have become the paradigm of ideologically motivated junk science. He and his collaborators (such as co-author Paul Ehrlich) predicted world-wide famine as a consequence of over-population by the late 20th century, and they advocated radical coercive public policies to avert catastrophe. Now this from CNS News:

Giving ?natural objects? ? like trees ? standing to sue in a court of law would have a ?most salubrious? effect on the environment, Holdren wrote  the 1970s.

?One change in (legal) notions that would have a most salubrious effect on the quality of the environment has been proposed by law professor Christopher D. Stone in his celebrated monograph, ?Should Trees Have Standing??? Holdren said in a 1977 book that he co-wrote with Paul R. Ehrlich and Anne H. Ehrlich.

?In that tightly reasoned essay, Stone points out the obvious advantages of giving natural objects standing, just as such inanimate objects as corporations, trusts, and ships are now held to have legal rights and duties,? Holdren added.

Fungus Makes Zombie Ants Do All the Work

A tropical fungus has adapted to infect ants and force them to chomp, with surprising specificity, into perfectly located leaves before killing them and taking over their bodies

ANT COLONIZED: A mature O. unilateralis growing from an ant it has killed a few weeks before. The "P" points out the perithecial plates where spores are released.
THE AMERICAN NATURALIST/ UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO PRESS

Problem: you?re a fungus that can only flourish at a certain temperature, humidity, location and distance from the ground but can?t do the legwork to find that perfect spot yourself. Solution: hijack an ant?s body to do the work for you?and then inhabit it.

Once infected, the spore-possessed ant will climb down from its normal habitat and bite down, with what the authors call a "death grip" on a leaf and then die. But the story doesn?t end there.

The only thing weirder than the Birthers are the anti-Birthers, who blame the Birthers for being conspiracy theorists yet actively feed the conspiracy by refusing to call for President Obama to release his birth certificate.

The state official in Hawaii who manages such things has reiterated that there is indeed an original birth certificate on file which would confirm President Obamas having been born in Hawaii and that she has seen it, but state law wont allow her to release it unless the president authorizes it.

So whats the problem here? Release the original and lets be done with this madness.

During the last campaign, John McCain faced similar questions and promptly responded by releasing his original birth certificate. Thats how normal people with nothing to hide handle these things.

Most Americans arent Birthers or anti-Birthers, but we are beginning to wonder why the president doesnt put this one to rest once and for all.

While the exact nature of the initial formation of lightning remains a subject of debate, what is known is that lightning strikes are caused by electrical imbalances present in the clouds. Those imbalances correct themselves suddenly, with an often spectacular light show - which Ive tried to show here, with a handful of recent photographs of lightning from around the world.

Tell the Department of Labor to release its list of goods tainted by slave labor

With the reauthorization of Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) in 2005, the Department of Labor was mandated by Congress to compile a list of goods produced by forced labor or child labor and the countries where they were made. It is now four years later and the department has yet to release this list to the public.

The list is designed to identify problem products (seafood, steel, textiles, etc.) and the countries where they are produced. Its release would provide consumers and shareholders with leverage to fight slavery worldwide. Empowered with this information, individuals could use their buying power to hold companies accountable and pressure them to rid their supply chains of slave labor.

The 600-acre fenced-in farm Pete lives on is owned by Doug Nelson, who has created an animal preserve -- and hunting facility -- for imported elk and red deer. Last year, he allowed Lawrence to bring Peter to the farm. Peter was newborn and had been injured by dogs.

More than a year later, the two are still attached.

"I guess he bonded with me. I only fed him ... I didnt want to get this attached, but its impossible,"

The problem is, that feeding and keeping wild animals is against the law

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department take issue with Pete living on the farm, along with the other wild animals that are fenced in the farm.

Do We Really Learn From Our Mistakes?

    Clip Source: www.eurekalert.org
If youve ever felt doomed to repeat your mistakes, researchers at MITs Picower Institute for Learning and Memory may have explained why: Brain cells may only learn from experience when we do something right and not when we fail.

Mark Histed and Anitha Pasupathy have created for the first time a unique snapshot of the learning process that shows how single cells change their responses in real time as a result of information about what is the right action and what is the wrong one.

"We have shown that brain cells keep track of whether recent behaviors were successful or not,"

Miller said. Furthermore, when a behavior was successful, cells became more finely tuned to what the animal was learning. After a failure, there was little or no change in the brain ? nor was there any improvement in behavior.

    The study sheds light on

the brains ability to change in response to experience. It has implications for understanding how we learn, and understanding and treating learning disorders.

The 1.5 meter-long carnivorous calamari ? which can grow up to 45kg ? have attacked divers.

Some divers have reported tentacles enveloping their masks and yanking at their cameras and gear.

"I wouldnt go into the water with them for the same reason I wouldnt walk into a pride of lions on the Serengeti," local diver Mike Bear told the Associated Press.

Man Killed By Lightning Warns Others

Golfer Struck By Bolt 9 Years Ago

A man whose heart stopped beating several times after he was struck by lightning on a golf course nine years ago now spends his time educating others about the dangers of Mother Nature.

Michael Utley, 57, was hit by a bolt of lightning at the age of 48 and was a brain-dead quadriplegic.

"I have no memory of it. Everything is what I have been told. I have no memory of that day or the 38 days afterwards that I spent in ICU," Utley said. "They blew the horn and 10 seconds later there was this bang and I was smoking, falling to the ground dead."

Utley said the next thing he remembered was waking up paralyzed.

Utley said he spends time trying to educate others on the dangers of lightning in Florida.

"It is not rocket scientist stuff. Look at the sky. If you see it, flee it. If you hear it, clear it. It is simple," he said.
