The Irvine Herald can reveal an historic archaeological dig is to take place in the town?s Abbey grounds. Jamie Morton, a recognised expert on Freemasonry, revealed the artefact used by Christ at The Last Supper could have been hidden in the town by the Knights Templar. He based his theory on historical documents he has uncovered and the town?s close connections with The Masonic Order. ?Several places have been pinpointed but all of them are false, I have found that Kilwinning and nearby Irvine had the highest concentration of Templar Knights in Scotland. ?I am interested to know what lies beneath this street as there are wells underneath the surface, who knows what?s buried there?? The recession didnt create the gap between state government commitments and state government resources. It only exposed it. The days of wine and roses have been affordable due to a cascade of tax revenue. In state after state, the governments take has ballooned. Overall, the average persons state tax burden has risen by 42 percent since 1999?nearly 50 percent beyond what the state would have needed just to keep spending constant, with allowances for inflation. California illustrates the problem. Adam Summers of the libertarian Reason Foundation in Los Angeles has calculated that if it "had simply limited its spending increases to the 4.38 percent average annual increase in the states consumer price index and population growth each years since fiscal year 1990-91, the state would be sitting on a $15 billion budget surplus right now." Illinois is another problem child. The states general fund appropriation is some two-thirds higher today than it would be if the state had just kept those outlays in line with inflation over the last two decades. The New Hampshire native grew up on farms in Massachusetts. Tupper developed a business selling his parents? produce door-to-door, but scraped through high school, barely graduating.
Despite Tupper?s dreams to become a famous millionaire, he received nothing but rejection letters from the manufacturers he approached with his ideas. He started a tree-trimming business to support himself, but it went bankrupt in the throes of the Great Depression.
The secret of its success is simple: Just keep a lid on it.

Rob Stonehouse (corr), one of the drivers on the route, said: "He usually just curls up at the back of the bus. Sometimes he nips between peoples legs but he never causes any trouble."
Casper has travelled an estimated 20,000 miles but Mrs Finden says because he is getting old the drivers often have to shuffle him off at the right stop.
A spokeswoman for First Bus said the firm has put a notice up in the office asking them to look after the non-paying passenger.

Scientists Drill a Mile Into Active Deep Sea Fault Zone [photos & videos]
clipped by: chestnut501In the first deep sea drilling expedition designed to gather seismic data, scientists have successfully drilled nearly a mile beneath the ocean floor into one of the world?s most active earthquake zones.

The Nankai Trough last ruptured twice in 1944 and 1946, generating earthquakes greater than magnitude 8 that shook the region and caused deadly tsunamis. Since then, the two plates have continued to move, but the boundary between them has been locked, causing pressure to build.

What is learned in Japan will help scientists understand other earthquake-prone plate boundaries, such as the Cascadia subduction zone, which extends along the Pacific coast from British Columbia to Northern California

What the Failure of the "Massachusetts Model" Tells Us About Health Care Reform
clipped by: merrieclippers remarks: Program costs have skyrocketed. Despite tax increases, the program faces huge deficits. The state is considering caps on insurance premiums, cuts in reimbursements to providers, and even the possibility of a "global budget" on health care spending" with its attendant rationing.
A shortage of providers, combined with increased demand, is increasing waiting times to see a physician.
With the ?Massachusetts model? frequently cited as a blueprint for health care reform, it is important to recognize that giving the government greater control over our health care system will have grave consequences for taxpayers, providers, and health care consumers. That is the lesson of the Massachusetts model.
When Massachusetts passed its pioneering health care reforms in 2006, critics warned that they would result in a slow but steady spiral downward toward a government-run health care system. Three years later, those predictions appear to be coming true:
Aura Dazzles, But It Takes Persuasion To Close The Deal
clipped by: merrieclippers remarks: But it turns out that Obama is not so good at argument. Inspiration is one thing, persuasion another. He created the impression on the campaign trail that he was familiar with major issues and readily ticked off his positions on them. But he has not proved so good at legislating.
One reason, perhaps, is that he has had little practice. He served as a legislator for a dozen years before becoming president, but was only rarely an active one. He spent one of his eight years as an Illinois state senator running unsuccessfully for Congress and two of them running successfully for U.S. senator. He spent two of his years in the U.S. Senate running for president. During all of his seven non-campaign years as a legislator, he was in the minority party.
In other words, hes never done much work putting legislation together -- especially legislation that channels vast flows of money and affects the workings of parts of the economy that deeply affect peoples lives.
Aura dazzles, but argument gets things done. Consider the debate on the Democrats health care bill and the increasingly negative response to Barack Obamas performance. Democrats have the numbers to pass a health care bill -- 256 votes in the House, 38 more than the 218 majority; 60 votes in the Senate, enough to defeat a filibuster. But they havent come up with the arguments, at least yet, to put those numbers on the board. Its something not many predicted that bright January inauguration morning.
We knew that day that Obama was good at aura, at generating enthusiasm for the prospect of hope and change. His inspiring speeches -- the Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner in Des Moines, the race speech in Philadelphia, the countless rallies in primary and caucus and target states -- helped him capture the Democratic nomination and then win the presidency by the biggest percentage margin in 20 years.

clipped by: merrieclippers remarks: ?Such concerns are often conveyed to politicians by former colleagues or aides who have joined industry ranks. ?Theyre talking to their friends,? Grob said. But also, he said, the lobbyists ?make really good arguments. They really know their stuff, and they understand the process. They know what the life cycle of a bill is, they know who to talk to, they know what theyre talking about -- and they reach everybody.?"
Lazy, incompetent bastards with their hands out ?
Truth be told, most legislators lack the type of technical expertise to craft a legislative initiative and are quite willing to allow lobbyists and their ?staff? to write the bill. All overlaid with lawyerly loopholes, exceptions and ambiguous language which benefits the special interests over the citizens.
Bottom line ?
The Obama Administration is hell-bent on making everything an emergency which requires legislation to be ramrodded through the legislative process.
?But for most lawmakers, resisting the armies of health-care lobbyists who are deployed to protect industry interests has proved difficult. ?Basically, the cards are stacked against the member who has to confront these groups,? said George F. Grob, who conducted numerous Medicare reviews through the Department of Health and Human Services inspector generals office. "Look at who theyre confronting -- the cancer doctors. Drug companies saying, Were the ones saving lives out there. Hospitals saying, Were going to have to shut down. "
No matter how many Congressional initiatives have attempted to close the revolving door between lobbying by former legislators and the current legislative staffs, it simply is too self-serving to actually close the door.

The fire in the Triangle Shirtwaist factory was a murder, a ghastly, horrible murder, and one that will be duplicated again and again while building owners are permitted, for the sake of saving a few hundred dollars, to endanger the lives of countless workers. That such a tragedy would occur has been foretold over and over again. Chief Croker of the Fire Department has issued repeated warnings. All of them fell on deaf ears. To carry out the necessary reforms would have cost money, and money is sacred and must be protected. Human life is not sacred and may be sacrificed endlessly.
Just what is poor?
clipped by: Aribethclippers remarks: This is not to comment on the experience of poverty or the rights and wrongs of who gets what, just to show how the system works. So here are some curiosities about poverty. It might improve during the recession, not because the poor get richer, and nor because the poor do, but because those who are on benefits could stay where they are but the median might fall. Romanian pensioners can have much less money than UK pensioners but fewer of them be described as poor. Thats because they are closer to the median person in their country, not because they have more money. In fact, they are simply bunched together at what others would consider the bottom.<< The interactive graphic couldnt clip, you have to visit the source.Very interesting.

Are you poor? Well, it depends on the income of someone youve never met.
Poverty can be a puzzle, or at least the way its measured. News this week, for example, was that UK pensioners suffer worse poverty than Romanian , even though four times richer.
Intrigued? Use our interactive graphic to find out whos poor by moving the smiley faces around and watching the boundaries change.
Youll also see as you move the median smiley that the pink poverty zone grows or shrinks. Poverty is defined as below 60% of the median. So as median smileys income grows, so does the zone in which other smilies are labelled poor.

clipped by: debbyskiclippers remarks: "Still, most Americans do have health insurance, and are reasonably satisfied with it. How is that possible, when insurance markets work so badly? The answer is government intervention. Most obviously, the government directly provides insurance via Medicare and other programs. And surveys show that Medicare recipients are much more satisfied with their coverage than Americans with private insurance. So here?s the bottom line: if you currently have decent health insurance, thank the government Right-wing opponents of reform would have you believe that President Obama is a wild-eyed socialist, attacking the free market. But unregulated markets don?t work for health care ? never have, never will. To the extent we have a working health care system at all right now it?s only because the government covers the elderly, while a combination of regulation and tax subsidies makes it possible for many, but not all, nonelderly Americans to get decent private coverage."
At a recent town hall meeting, a man stood up and told Representative Bob Inglis to ?keep your government hands off my Medicare.? The congressman, a Republican from South Carolina, tried to explain that Medicare is already a government program ? but the voter, Mr. Inglis said, ?wasn?t having any of it.?

Web addresses exceed worlds population
clipped by: mugofcoffeeMelbourne, July 30 (ANI): Internet is growing in dimensions every second, so much so that there are more addresses than there are people on Earth, claims the team behind Microsofts new search engine Bing.
Bing has put the number of web pages at "over 1 trillion", while Google had earlier indexed more than one trillion discreet web addresses.
The current global population stands at more than 6.7 billion, which means that there are about 150 web addresses per person in the world.
And this could mean that if a person spent just one minute reading every website in existence, then he or she would be kept busy for 31,000 years, without any sleep.
"An average person would need six hundred thousand decades of nonstop reading to read through the information," News.com.au quoted Bing as saying.
Mark Higginson, director of analytics for Nielsen Online, said that the global online population had jumped 16 per cent since last year.

Bolivia Bans All Animals From Circus Acts

Use of wild and domestic animals have been banned in Bolivia, the first law of its kind anywhere in the world, say animal welfare activists
A handful of other countries have banned the use of wild animals in circuses, but the Bolivian ban includes domestic animals as well.
The law, which states that the use of animals in circuses "constitutes an act of cruelty", took effect on 1 July with operators given a year to comply, according to the bills sponsor, Ximena Flores.
The law was proposed after an undercover investigation by the nonprofit-making London-based group Animal Defenders International (ADI) found widespread abuse in circuses operating in Bolivia.

Military planning for possible H1N1 outbreak
clipped by: foxyarseclippers remarks: Civilian authorities would lead any relief efforts in the event of a major outbreak, the official said. The military, as they would for a natural disaster or other significant emergency situation, could provide support and fulfill any tasks that civilian authorities could not, such as air transport or testing of large numbers of viral samples from infected patients.
As a first step, Gates is being asked to sign a so-called ?execution order? that would authorize the military to begin to conduct the detailed planning to execute the proposed plan.
Orders to deploy actual forces would be reviewed later, depending on how much of a health threat the flu poses this fall, the officials said.

The proposal is awaiting final approval from Defense Secretary Robert Gates.
It has yet to be determined how many troops would be needed and whether they would come from the active duty or the National Guard and Reserve forces.

New Poll: Less Than Half Of Republicans Believe Obama Was Born In U.S.
clipped by: ratilfarclippers remarks: Or 83 percent of people with working brains. Your pick

Less than half of Republicans believe that Barack Obama was born in the United States of America, a new public opinion poll finds.
Only 42 percent of Republican respondents in a Research 2000 survey, conducted for the liberal website Daily Kos, said they thought Obama was a natural born citizen; 28 percent said they did not believe Obama was born in the United States; 30 percent said they were not sure.
The responses, which were gathered after several prominent conservative media personalities fed suspicion that Obama was unconstitutionally holding office, show the extent to which the conspiracy has taken hold in the GOP.
That only a plurality of Republicans were willing to acknowledge the president was born in America is nothing short of astounding, considering the preponderance of evidence that confirms his Hawaiian birth.
Ninety-three percent of Democrats say the president was born in the United States, as do 83 percent of independents.

White House officials and lawmakers were studying late Thursday how to keep alive the governments cash-for-clunkers incentive program because of concerns the programs $1 billion budget may have been exhausted after just one week.

Congress had expected the $1 billion set aside for the rebates to last several months and set up the program to expire Nov. 1.

I?ve been asked by many people if I?ve heard anything about the status of Hubble since the servicing mission. I haven?t heard a peep, so it was a pretty good shock to see the Hubble folks releasing not just an image, but one from the newly installed Wide Field Camera 3? and it?s of the ginormous scar left on Jupiter?s face from the recent impact!
Holy soot!
If you?re looking for the back story, you can read my description here. This new image is really something. The colors are not precisely natural, but close: three filters that pass red, green, and blue light were used to approximate a true-color picture. In reality, the filters used let through a very narrow range in each color, while our eyes detect a much wider range; that?s why I said "approximate". I?m guessing that narrow-band filters were used because Jupiter is hideously bright, so those filters would allow for decent exposure times without frying the camera.

Michael Egnor, M.D. is a professor of neurosurgery and pediatrics at State University of New York, Stony Brook and an award-winning brain surgeon who has been named one of New York?s best doctors by New York Magazine.
Dr. Engor says, among other things,
Despite his strong scientific credentials, he advanced theories in the 1970?s and 1980?s that have become the paradigm of ideologically motivated junk science. He and his collaborators (such as co-author Paul Ehrlich) predicted world-wide famine as a consequence of over-population by the late 20th century, and they advocated radical coercive public policies to avert catastrophe. These predictions were explicit, public, and were published under . . . . .

The only thing weirder than the Birthers are the anti-Birthers, who blame the Birthers for being conspiracy theorists yet actively feed the conspiracy by refusing to call for President Obama to release his birth certificate.
The state official in Hawaii who manages such things has reiterated that there is indeed an original birth certificate on file which would confirm President Obamas having been born in Hawaii and that she has seen it, but state law wont allow her to release it unless the president authorizes it.
So whats the problem here? Release the original and lets be done with this madness.

With the reauthorization of Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) in 2005, the Department of Labor was mandated by Congress to compile a list of goods produced by forced labor or child labor and the countries where they were made. But legislation now being rushed through Congress"H.R. 3200 and the Senate Health Committee Bill"will reduce access to care, pressure the elderly to end their lives prematurely, and doom baby boomers to painful later years.
