He was injured and would not live long. A wave of atheism swept over me. How could there be a God who would make such a miserable creature. I thought there could be no God for this pigeon. Abruptly the pigeon took off. He rose into the gold serenity of a Roman sky. He wheeled above the rooftops and soared higher again. In his flying, he was experiencing sensations I could never know. Without any merit on my part, I had been permitted to see how the universe held glories even for a dying pigeon. I followed his flight for many minutes until he was just a speck against the immensity of heaven. At that moment I understood that in his most ordinary everyday experience of flying, the pigeon would know unfathomable elations the like of which a human being cannot guess at, short of eternity. I was humbled. Ever since, I cannot look at a pigeon without thinking of the majesty of the creator. Why Unfettered Capitalism Is Bad for Your Dietclipped by: JackieDelclippers remarks: These are the companies that are trying to efficiently process tens of thousands of cows per day -- cows that have been lined up in Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) and fed grain (more efficient than using land to feed them their natural diet of grass), pumped with hormones and antibiotics to keep them from dying, which means a glut on the market of cheap (antibiotic-filled) beef. And these are the companies that are creating the seeds -- those seeds that the farmer cant even save for fear of litigation -- to grow the crops that require the use of their pesticides and which produce a proliferation of fast food. Yes, efficiency is the bottom line in our current agricultural system. Not safety, not health, nor least of all, taste. No, for a corporation that is beholden first to its shareholders, its all about the quickest way to get to the bottom line. Beyond the 30-year experiment in free-market ideology having been judged a failure in financial markets, one thing is clear, as Kerry Trueman reminded us in a recent post: Unfettered capitalism has also been bad for our health, and indeed the safety of our food. Recently, the New York Times reported that this administration has said it will take a harder line on antitrust legislation in diverse sectors of the economy, including agriculture. the largest sectors of the agribusiness world (grain, meatpacking, biotechnology, etc.) are monopolizing food from seed to supermarket shelf and thereby deciding what we can (and cant) buy and eat across this country, and by extension, the world. Full Story Comedienne Explains Jail Escape by Two Convicted Killersclipped by: tabseyclippers remarks: How bloody inconsiderate of them taking the car so that dogs couldnt sniff them out ( as in the old movies, I suppose she means). Why cant helicopters be used to follow the car, or whatever. Horses may look a little silly chasing a 100mph car. Two convicted killers are on the run in the US state of Arkansas after escaping from a jail dressed as prison guards. Both men were serving life sentences without the possibility of parole and local officials say they pose a threat to anyone they encounter. Spokeswoman for the Arkansas Department of Corrections, Dina Tyler, says the search has been made harder by the fact the pair drove off in a car from the prison parking lot. "There arent any tracking dogs or horses or helicopters because theyre in a car," he said. "So what we have to rely on is investigative skills, and the ability to develop leads, and try to track down any place that the inmates might have gone." Ms Tyler says the uniforms the inmates wore in their escape are made at the prison. "It is possible, though it would be difficult, that some inmates managed to get a uniform or two to them," she said. "At this point we dont know if thats what happened. But obviously were going to find out." Attack dogs, Billy clubs and water hoses. Burning crosses and lynch mobs. Confederate flags, liquor and screams of "Kill the (fill in pejorative here)!" "Old racism" was red lining and segregating and "whites only" drinking fountains, schools and country clubs. It was The Dred Scott Decision, Executive Order 9066, and the Trail of Tears. "Old racism" was a blind eye and "all deliberate speed" that wasnt deliberate or particularly speedy and nonsense about the sanctity of marriage which was crap when it was applied to "race laws" and is crap when applied to "one man/one woman." that Newt would compare "old racism" and "new racism" proves Sotomayor correct that experience based on fact is very different than that based on perception By the way, Newt, thanks for coming to the party late on that denouncement of "old racism." Researchers Resurrect Extinct Musical Instrument

Researchers Resurrect Extinct Musical Instrument
A new computer program has helped researchers to recreate a long extinct musical instrument known as the Lituus.
Though the 8-foot long trumpet-like instrument was popular in ancient Rome and throughout the middle-ages, it began to fall out of favor with composers some 300 years ago. Johann Sebastian Bach?s ?O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht? ? composed in 1736 ? is one of the last known pieces of music to have been written for the instrument.

For the first time in hundreds of years, classical music buffs have been able to hear this famous composition as Bach intended it to sound.
Experts say that due to its size, it is an extremely awkward and difficult instrument to play and is able to produce only a limited range of notes. However, if played correctly, they say it lends Bach?s famous work a haunting, melancholy tone not achievable with modern instruments.

Gradually the mainstream of the American public is becoming aware that none of these elements is unique to Christianity. Symbologists or scholars who specialize in understanding ancient symbols, tell us that the orthodox Jesus story, as it appears in our gospels, follows a specific sacred or mythic template that existed in the Ancient Near East long before Christianity or even Judaism.

Dr. George Tiller, abortion provider, shot dead at church

God damn it.George Tiller, a Wichita doctor who was one of the few doctors in the nation to perform late-term abortions, was shot to death on Sunday as he attended church, city officials in Wichita said.
Dr. Tiller, who had performed abortions since the 1970s, had long been a lightning rod for controversy over the issue of abortion, particularly in Kansas, where abortion opponents regularly protested outside his clinic and sometimes his home and church. In 1993, he was shot in both arms by an abortion opponent but recovered. He had also been the subject of many efforts at prosecution, including a citizen-initiated grand jury investigation. In the latest such effort, in March, Dr. Tiller was acquitted of charges that he had performed late-term abortions that violated state law.
The shooting occurred at around 10 a.m. (Central time) at Reformation Lutheran Church on the city?s East Side, Dr. Tiller?s regular church.

Bird Nests in Strange Places
clipped by: KelikaThis collared dove isn?t going to be getting any peace and quiet nested in amongst the nuts and bolts fixings of some traffic lights at a very busy junction.
This thrush and its young family have gone a step further by nesting inside the traffic light itself in Leeds city centre, seemingly oblivious to the constant traffic.
How a bird?s nest complete with chirping chicks came to be in a kitchen lamp inside a house is anyone?s guess. The human residents must have been away on vacation for quite a long time.
The RSPB has warned people to be aware of the more unusual places in their homes that birds might use for nesting and rearing their young. Hanging baskets are a particular favourite of wrens.
Other garden birds opt for even more obscure nooks and crannies ? like this robin, found nesting in a tool tidy. Perhaps it fancies itself as a bit of a DIY expert.

Pharmacist who shot robber charged with murder
clipped by: disenchantedcitizen
clippers remarks: Okay, first of all, he should be charged with murder. It was obviously murder. If the teen had died from the first shot then it would still be considered as self defense and his hero status would be justified. I understand the hatred of low-lifes robbing you and the scare it puts into you. I also understand the frustration at there not being enough cops to stop this from happening and the fact that these guys never get effectively punished because the justice system cannot deter this from happening in the first place. But to go back to the injured guy and wantonly kill him puts the pharmacist in the same category as a wanton killer.Confronted by two holdup men, pharmacist Jerome Ersland pulled a gun, shot one of them in the head and chased the other away. Then, in a scene recorded by the drugstores security camera, he went behind the counter, got another gun, and pumped five more bullets into the wounded teenager as he lay on the floor.
Now Ersland has been charged with first-degree murder in a case that has stirred a furious debate over vigilante justice and self-defense and turned the pharmacist into something of a folk hero.
Ersland, 57, is free on $100,000 bail, courtesy of an anonymous donor. He has won praise from the pharmacys owner, received an outpouring of cards, letters and checks from supporters, and become the darling of conservative talk radio.
District Attorney David Prater said Ersland was justified in shooting 16-year-old Antwun Parker once in the head, but not in firing the additional shots into his belly.

Is there such a thing as overuse of social networking tools? In the online world, is the notion of a public/private divide simply not applicable?

Wed like to think that the people were paying for advice (like doctors) would offer the same helpful advice no matter what, but reader citizenkahn suggests that if you really want good advice, pull out a notebook and start taking notes?a phenomenon hes dubbed the Moleskine effectI think the act of taking notes in front of others (especially doctors) entices them to give me more time and better information. Three times lately I have pulled out my moleskine and started taking notes in front of a doctor. Each time I have received tips, web site references, and ideas. In one case I believe a vet spent and extra 20 minutes discussing my birds issues and coping strategies. I cant be sure that this is a real cause-and-effect pattern, but it feels like one. I think that when the moleskine comes out it signals the doctor that here is someone who will follow up on the advice thats given and sets up a virtuous circle of sorts.

Turn a 5 Gallon Bucket into a Rust Removal Kit
clipped by: disenchantedcitizen
clippers remarks: This is really great use of the mystery of science. The heart of the kit is a small battery charger or home made power supply ($20-$50 at AutoZone etc) - Its best if the charger has a 6v option and an internal "trouble" switch that stops charging if something shorts out. I might have to find/buy something rusty just to watch it work.
Build your own electrolytic anti-rust tank out of a five gallon bucket instead and youll clobber your oxidized iron with scienceThis project relies on a few simple components?a five gallon bucket, some pieces of rebar or other narrow steel, a trickle battery charger, and some wire?and a washing soda/water solution to create an energized solution thats really tough on rust. The simple summary of how it works: you clip the negative charging lead to the item to be cleaned, the positive to the rebar, and then hit the juice and watch as the combination of electricity and washing-soda-laced water channel the rust right off your tool and towards the rebar anode. As opposed to grinding, heavy wire brushing and acid bath processes, this method removes none of the original steel and is not noisy or caustic.

But today, scientists are facing up to the humiliation of admitting that the stark results they reported in the study were not a breakthrough but a terrible, humiliating blunder.
The study was based on the fact that laboratory monkeys and baboons had a severe reaction to the drug when it was injected in small doses. But it emerged this weekend that the vials of liquid did not contain ecstasy. Instead, the animals received a dose of methamphetamine, or speed - a drug widely known to affect the bodys dopamine system. The tubes had somehow been mislabelled by the supplier.

Causes of Snoring, How To Stop Snoring
clipped by: ykaw97
clippers remarks: Chase away your snoring and possibly sleep apnea problems...Snoring is often caused when your air passages constrict and your tongue falls back as your body relaxes at night. The soft tissues of the throat relax and cause the constriction. When you are awake muscles in your throat hold the soft tissues in place but as you relax everything relaxes and the airway constricts. Age and poor fitness can contribute.
Do you have a snoring problem? If you wake up more than once a week wrung out and tired it may be that you suffer from snoring or worse, sleep apnea. Snoring was once considered harmless, even funny but we now know that it can cause a host of health problems from high blood pressure to what appears to be chronic fatigue. Snoring and sleep apnea can be extremely dangerous and the two big questions you probably have are, what causes snoring and is there a snoring cure?

For example, freshman Rep. Alan Grayson, a Florida Democrat whose district includes Disney World, was recently there and was inspired.
Members of the Congressional Black Caucus want the Treasury Department to subsidize minority owners of broadcasting properties. The broadcasters are not "too big to fail" and so do not pose a "systemic risk," but, the representatives say, failures of minority broadcasters would diminish diversity.
One New Deal improvisation not yet emulated by the Obama administration is the September 1933 slaughter -- while the unemployment rate was 25 percent and millions were hungry -- of 6 million young pigs. Feds give ACORN more money despite indictments

clippers remarks: Under the guise of due process concerns, congressional Democrats have opened the way for organizations with criminal histories to gain greater access to taxpayer funds. Exhibit A here is the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now, now under investigation in at least 14 states for voter registration fraud.
Earlier this month, House Financial Services Committee Chairman Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., sponsored an amendment to the $140 million Mortgage Reform and Anti-Predatory Lending Act. The Frank measure allowed organizations being investigated by state or federal authorities on corruption charges to receive federal funds as long as they avoid conviction.
Frank argued that his amendment, which was approved by the House, protected the presumption of innocence in federal spending. But federal ethics rules have long stipulated that either an actual or apparent conflict of interest can put a government employee at risk of prosecution for ethics violations.

Twitters Biggest Egos Exposed
clipped by: KelikaMaybe the trendy messaging website coaxes contributors into feeling anonymous and uninhibited. Perhaps its short-burst format encourages streams of consciousness that go tragically unedited. Or, possibly, the world is full of more jerks than we care to acknowledge. Whatever the explanation, a shocking number of Twitterers manage to use just 140 characters to come across as massive jackasses."Its so life-affirming when the poor fall in love," Christy from Los Angeles shares with her followers.
"Watching a LOT of fashion mistakes go past whilst waiting for the bus," a British Twitterer pouts. "This is why I dont use public transport."
These paragons of narcissism, misanthropy and delusion now have a shrine of their own, at tweetingtoohard.com (tagline: "Where self-important tweets get the recognition they deserve."). The website features more than 2,700 messages, which visitors rank in terms of offensiveness.

Newborn lungs exist in a "compacted state" suitable for the womb. When the infant is born, the placenta and cord pulse for up to 20 minutes, delivering a burst of blood volume to the infants system. This blood burst is just what is needed for the lungs of the newborn to expand.
