men catch baby!

Two men were praised as heroes today after they caught an 18-month-old baby girl who plummeted at least 30 feet from the window of a triple-decker apartment building in Lawrence.

The baby fell through the air and when she landed, "he pretty much got the top and I got the diaper end, or the bottom half, or whatever you call it," Lemire said.

Officials said the baby had fallen 40 feet, but Lemire said that was incorrect.

The fall was 28 feet, perhaps 30, he said. "Like I said, Im a remodeling contractor so Im pretty good at the heights."

Time of conception linked to birth defects in United States

A study published in the April 2009 issue of the medical journal Acta Pædiatrica is the first to report that birth defect rates in the United States were highest for women conceiving in the spring and summer. The researchers also found that this period of increase risk correlated with increased levels of pesticides in surface water across the United States.

Studying all 30.1 million births which occurred in the U.S. between 1996 and 2002, the researchers found a strong association between the increased number of birth defects in children of women whose last menstrual period occurred in April, May, June or July and elevated levels of nitrates, atrazine and other pesticides in surface water during the same months

this is the first study to link their increased seasonal concentration in surface water with the peak in birth defects in infants conceived in the same months.

?Bottom line,? Ball added, ?there are procedures in place. If our officers acted inappropriately, our chief would follow those procedures. But it would start with someone lodging a complaint, which hasn?t been done by the student or the college. So, there?s nothing to investigate if you don?t have a complaint.?

Earth Hour Definitely Isn?t a Bunch of Crap

Worst song re-released

Black Lace hit Agadoo, named the worst song of all time by a panel of music writers, is being re-released 25 years after it hit number two.

Black Lace in 1984

The song, kept off the top by George Michaels Careless Whisper in 1984, won the title in a 2003 Q magazine poll.

The video for Agadoo (Mambo 2009 remix) was directed by Bruce Jones, who played Coronation Streets Les Battersby.

Black Lace singer Dene Michael said: "With all the doom and gloom in the world, this is just what we need."

Michael is joined on the record, released on Monday, by new member Ian Robinson.

The bands other hits include Superman, Do The Conga and I Am The Music Man.

"It sounded like the school disco you were forced to attend, your middle-aged relatives forming a conga at a wedding party, a travelling DJ act based in Wolverhampton, every party cliche you ever heard," the panel added.

The Q magazine panel summed up the 1984 original as "magnificently dreadful".

The debate about whether to legalize marijuana in the United States has never been a mainstream one.

But the larger issue lighting up the idea seems to be the battered American economy.

In February, California state lawmaker Tom Ammiano proposed legislation that would regulate the cultivation and sale of marijuana, with a potential tax windfall of more than $1 billion to help bail out the state from a severe budget crisis.

President Obama found himself responding to a question that had been voted among the most popular of those submitted by the public: whether the controlled sale and taxation of marijuana could help stimulate the US economy.

"The answer is no, I don?t think that is a good strategy to grow the economy."

The issue of taxation just cropped up in another intriguing way. The Drug Enforcement Administration caused a stir in San Francisco on Wednesday when it raided a locally permitted medical marijuana dispensary.

As Haaretz reports:

The Times story also notes criticism for the IDFs decision to end the investigation. Nine human rights groups in Israel have issued a statement claiming that such an abrupt ending is evidence of insufficiency. DETROIT (AP) -- Many assembly line autoworkers reacted with skepticism and anger Monday to the Obama administrations tough tactics, which stoked long-simmering feelings that the people who put the country on wheels get treated differently than the wizards of Wall Street.

Unstable Activation and Why Parachutists Die

Skydiver in air-Losinj Island-Croatia. What part of parachuting is most dangerous?

In both skydiving (jumping from aircraft) and BASE jumping (from stationary objects), instability in free fall is a fatal risk factor.  Jumping from an airplane into the wind rushing by feels roughly like diving into a swift current of water, and there is a risk that beginners will lose control and start tumbling around in the new environment, which can lead to unstable activation of the parachute with subsequent tangling of its lines and even late parachute activation.

When you jump from the ledge of a cliff, it?s not as windy, but this can in fact be a danger, since for the first few seconds you don?t get any help from rushing wind to control your body and straighten up if you should fall forward and start tumbling around.  Just as in skydiving, there is a risk of unstable or late parachute activation.

The dissertation shows that many injuries are a result of ?pilot error? on the part of the jumper.

The phrase "global war on terror" is finished, at least as far as U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is concerned.

The top U.S. diplomat told reporters Tuesday that the Obama administration has quit using that line to describe the effort to fight terrorism around the world.

Clinton spoke as she headed to Europe for a week of diplomatic meetings. The phrase "war on terror" is widely disliked in Europe and elsewhere overseas, where even close U.S. allies suggested it was overly militaristic and perhaps counterproductive.

It is also now associated with a range of Bush-era policies such as harsh interrogation practices that President Barack Obama has pledged to abandon.

Then-President George W. Bush used the phrase as a rallying cry after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

Earlier this month, the Obama administration said that it was abandoning another one of Mr. Bushs key phrases: enemy combatant.

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Charles Grassley, ranking member of the Senate finance committee, have put Obama on notice that they will oppose any health care reform that includes a public option because, they fear, private health insurers will not be able to compete with a government health insurance program. Theyre probably right about that. It might be worth losing sleep over if private health insurers were today doing a halfway decent job of keeping costs down and/or providing an acceptable level of coverage to policyholders. But they arent.

One of the oddest aspects of the debate over health care reform is that at the moment conservatives are finally willing to concede that government health insurance programs like Medicare and the State Childrens Health Insurance Program are superior to their private counterparts both in delivering benefits and in keeping costs down

A University of Pennsylvania psychology study, using functional magnetic resonance imaging technology to scan the brain, reveals that people who consider themselves visual learners, as opposed to verbal learners, have a tendency to convert linguistically presented information into a visual mental representation.

The more strongly an individual identified with the visual cognitive style, the more that individual activated the visual cortex when reading words.

The opposite also appears to be true from the study?s results.

Those participants who considered themselves verbal learners were found under fMRI to have brain activity in a region associated with phonological cognition when faced with a picture, suggesting they have a tendency to convert pictorial information into linguistic representations.

Aussie meat ant feasts on cane toad invaders

THEYVE been blamed for killing everything from native frogs to crocodiles but researchers believe the notorious cane toad has met its match in the meat ant.

    meat ant

In a new study ecologists discovered that while baby native frogs could escape the pincers of native meat ants, the introduced junior cane toads cannot move fast enough.

Cane toads were introduced into north Queensland in 1935 to control the greyback cane beetle, a measure which failed. In the past weekends inaugural Toad Day Out, some 6000 toads were cleared from backyards in north Queensland.

Studies have blamed the toads for devastating Australian fauna, in particular the numbers of quolls, goannas, skinks and crocodiles.

Because cane toads evolved in South America, their shorter shin bones meant they were not as quick and nimble as native Australian frogs at escaping the meat ant. Native frogs were also more vigilant for meat ants, the study found.

A lot has been tried over the years to kill off the cane toad and nothing much has succeeded, but now a native ant may hold some new hope.

Scientists at the University of Sydney have discovered that young cane toads are particularly susceptible to being attacked by the aggressive meat ants.

A meat ant attacks a cane toad

They have published their findings in the latest edition of the British journal Functional Ecology.

But a north Queensland academic says it is hopeless optimism to think that ants could stop the relentless spread of cane toads.

The ants can grow up to one centimetre long and they use a powerful set of jaws instead of a sting, says biology professor Rick Shine from the University of Sydney.

"Theyre probably the kind of ant that causes problems if you leave your bit of chicken on the ground during the picnic," he said.

The scientists stumbled upon the discovery that the ants were attacking toads when they saw baby toads being eaten on the edge of ponds and creeks.

    The Next Oil Crisis

    clipped by: merrie
clippers remarks: It takes considerable time to greatly increase oil production, and it also takes time to reduce production. Despite the global recession, oil production capacity is only slightly above demand Low-cost oil production is declining sharply, as the old easy-to-produce fields are being rapidly depleted. There are still huge potential oil supplies, but most of it will be in very expensive, deep-sea areas, or in oil sands (Canada) or oil shale (Colorado, Wyoming, Utah), all of which are much more costly to produce. Biofuels are also expensive and compete with food for land on which to produce them. If suddenly it were announced that a miracle electric battery - one that could power a full-sized automobile at high speed for more than 300 miles and could be quickly recharged - had been developed, what impact do you think it would have on the price of gasoline next week?
The price of oil soon will soar again. The present price of a barrel of oil, $50 or so, is below the price needed to meet current demand for a sustained period of time

In addition, with the U.S. Federal Reserve System greatly expanding the money supply - which will continue because of the explosion in government spending - the dollar is falling against other currencies; and given that global oil is priced in dollars, the price of oil will rise in dollar terms, just as it did two years ago.

About 65 percent of the demand for global oil can be supplied at a price of $35 per barrel. Another 20 percent of demand can be supplied at a price of $35 to $60 per barrel, but the remaining 15 percent will only be supplied over the long run at prices of $60 to perhaps $130 per barrel. Oil, like all commodities, is priced at the margin, which means the price of all oil demanded by the market is equal to the price that producers can get for the last barrel of oil they sell.

1,300 dead penguins found on the coast of Chile

    clipped by: nuttyriv3r
Municipal workers from the tiny town of Toltén on Monday continued to collect the carcasses of dead penguins, more than 1,000 of which have washed ashore in southern Chile?s Region XI in recent days.

The cause of the penguin deaths is still unknown,

Prado does not think the dead Humbolt and Magellanic penguins were victims of a toxic spill of some kind.

One possibility is that the penguins were caught in fishing boat nets ? something known to occur in the area with some frequency.

?It?s not the fishermen?s fault,? said Machuca. ?The fishers set their nets at night, between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Obviously, by the morning, the penguins are going to be drowned, they?re going to be dead.?

Given the high casualty figures, however, Bernardo Prado isn?t convinced fishing nets alone can explain the deaths. As of Sunday night, some 1,300 dead penguins had been counted ? far more than in previous cases.

The lone survivor was temporarily given to SERNAPESCA and later released back into the wild.

Officially Byron Shires biggest recorded cane toad, the monster weighed in at more than half a kilogram with a stomach packed full of seafood.

Found by Byron Shire Council capital works environmental officer Michael Bingham on the banks on the Brunswick River near Mullumbimby on the weekend, she stretched 16cm in length and a fat 11.5cm across.

Big Bertha, who weighed in at more than 500 grams.

?None of the stuff Ive read has shown seafood in their stomachs,? she said. ?They usually eat insects. In their native environment in South America their main diet is ants and beetles.?

A dissection of this toad showed it had recently consumed five whole crabs and three molluscs. She was also full of eggs.

Ms Gibney said the next-biggest cane toad found in the Byron Shire was almost 200 grams lighter than Bertha at 325 grams.

Scientists studying a mysterious neurological affliction in cats have discovered a surprising ability of the central nervous system to repair itself and restore function.

In a study published March 30, 2009 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a team of researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison reports that the restoration in cats of myelin ? a fatty insulator of nerve fibers that degrades in a host of human central nervous system disorders, the most common of which is multiple sclerosis ? can lead to functional recovery.

Myelin is a fatty substance that forms a sheath for nerve fibers, known as axons, and facilitates the conduction of nerve signals. Its loss through disease causes impairment of sensation, movement, cognition and other functions, depending on which nerves are affected.

    Does Your Cat Bite?

    Does Your Cat Bite?

Sometimes cats bite the hand that?s petting them?occasionally hard enough to break the skin. Why do they bite, and can you train them not to?

Some cats bite because as kittens they were permitted to play ?hand wrestling? with their owners, who considered it cute antics. They grow up thinking it is okay to bite and swat at hands. But when they do it as adults with big sharp teeth and sharp claws, they aren?t nearly as cute.

While some cats can tolerate being petted, others feel overstimulated by the sensation and automatically react by lashing out. Your cat may be lashing out at you as a last resort after delivering what she believes to be clear pre-strike warnings. These may include tail lashing, ear flicking, dilated pupils, shifting position, tensing muscles, and ceasing to purr. When your cat displays these warning signals, that?s your cue to stop petting. She has communicated with you that she is done with being petted.

Do not be eager to pet your cat for a while.

Fifteen hospital workers have been fired for improperly accessing the medical records of octuplets mother Nadya Suleman, officials have said.

Eight other staff at the Bellflower medical centre near Los Angeles were disciplined for looking at the records without permission, the hospital said.

The violations of health care privacy laws had been reported to the state, a hospital spokesman said.

"Despite the notoriety of this case, to us this person is a patient who deserves the privacy that all our patients get,"

He added that there was no indication any of the information had been distributed to the media.

Ms Suleman became just the second person recorded in the US to have delivered a set of living octuplets when she gave birth on 26 January.

The six boys and two girls, who were nine weeks premature, were delivered by Caesarean section in the Kaiser Permanente Bellflower hospital near Los Angeles, California.

A new study of twins suggests sexual precociousness is in our genes

Sexual precociousness is in our genes, new research suggests. A unique study of twins separated at birth finds a genetic link to the age at which a person first engages in sexual intercourse.

"Its not like theres a gene for having a sex at a certain date," says Nancy Segal, a psychologist at California State University in Fullerton who led the new study. Instead, heritable behavioural traits such as impulsivity could help determine when people first have sex, she says.

As genetic determinism goes, the new findings are modest. Segals team found that genes explain a third of the differences in participants age at first intercourse ? which was, on average, a little over 19 years old. By comparison, roughly 80% of variations in height across a population can be explained by genes alone.

"The administration has stopped using the phrase, and that speaks for itself, obviously," Clinton told

Former President Bush adopted the phrase "war on terror" to define U.S. policy after the Sept. 11 attacks. Soon Pentagon officials turned the term "global war on terror" into an acronym, GWOT.

However, among Bushs opponents and international critics, the phrase came to symbolize his administrations unpopular foreign policy and its detention practices.

The Obama administration has said that it has not officially banned the phrase.

The task force concluded that existing fuel-efficiency standards have hampered GM and Chrysler?s ability to compete, and that raising fuel-efficiency standards (which the administration supports) would hamper their ability to compete even further. ?On a standalone basis,? the task force reported, ?Chrysler will struggle to comply with increasing fuel-efficiency standards.? And many of GM?s best-selling products, the task force wrote, ?fail to meet the minimum threshold on fuel economy and rank in the bottom quartile of fuel economy achievement.? How Room Designs Affect Your Work and Mood

Brain research can help us craft spaces that relax, inspire, awaken, comfort and heal

Architects have long intuited that the places we inhabit can affect our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Now behavioral scientists are giving their hunches an empirical basis

Scientists are unearthing tantalizing clues about how to design spaces that promote creativity, keep students focused and alert, and lead to relaxation and social intimacy. The results inform architectural and design decisions such as the height of ceilings, the view from windows, the shape of furniture, and the type and intensity of lighting

Such efforts are leading to cutting-edge projects such as residences for seniors with dementia in which the building itself is part of the treatment

    Institutions

are encouraging interdisciplinary research into how a planned environment influences the mind, and some architecture schools are now offering classes in introductory neuroscience

Witches bucking religion trend, its kind of sink or swim theology

While most other major religions lost ground, Wiccanism -- whose members, Wiccans, sometimes refer to themselves as witches -- and other so-called "New Religious movements" grew by more than a million members since the last ARIS survey was published in 2001. Theyre now an estimated 1.2 percent of the adult population.

Ed Hubbard teaches a class on the Wiccan religion at the Occult Bookstore.

In Chicago -- home to an unknown number of Wiccan covens (congregations) and independent practitioners --theres even a Witch School. An outgrowth of the nationally popular and long-active Web site witchschool.com, the Downstate Rossville-based organization currently offers three monthly courses and returned to town earlier this month after a five-year absence.

Hubbard said a common misconception people have of witches is "that were satanists and that we belong to the devil. Thats a big one.

Researchers solve mystery of deep-sea fish with tubular eyes and transparent head

Researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute recently solved the half-century-old mystery of a fish with tubular eyes and a transparent head. Ever since the "barreleye" fish Macropinna microstoma was first described in 1939, marine biologists have known that its tubular eyes are very good at collecting light. However, the eyes were believed to be fixed in place and seemed to provide only a "tunnel-vision" view of whatever was directly above the fishs head. A new paper by Bruce Robison and Kim Reisenbichler shows that these unusual eyes can rotate within a transparent shield that covers the fishs head. This allows the barreleye to peer up at potential prey or focus forward to see what it is eating.

To spank or not to spank

"It doesnt have to be tying up your partner or placing clamps on their nipples, it could be something as simple as cooking a meal together or even doing the housework as a duo," he says.
It might not look like fun, but spanking can make couples closer (Image: Clandestini / WestEnd61 / Rex Features)

SPANKING is stressful at first, but it could bring consenting couples closer together. Thats the implication of two studies of hormonal changes associated with sadomasochistic (S&M) activities including spanking, bondage and flogging.

At an S&M event in Colorado, testosterone was measured in 45 men and women. It increased significantly in receiving women only. Donatella Marazziti of the University of Pisa, Italy, says the boost may help women cope with the aggressive nature of S&M activities, or that it could be another sign of stress. In both studies, couples who said the party went well also reported increases in relationship closeness

Its important to note that levels of both hormones dropped back down in couples who enjoyed the experience, Marazziti says. "When sexual intercourse is consensual it is not stressful - even if it is extreme sex."

    Description:

Two immature green sea turtles have survived a mysterious illness that?s killing sea turtles on Florida?s northeast coast and are recuperating at the Clinic for Rehabilitation of Wildlife on Sanibel.

Since the middle of February, 180 loggerhead and green sea turtles have stranded in Duval, St. Johns, Flagler, Volusia and Brevard counties.

Fifty of the turtles were alive and taken to eight rehabilitation facilities

The number of strandings is more than three times the average for the same time period.

At this point, no one knows why so many sea turtles are stranding on the east coast, said Allen Foley

?There are no diseases detected, either bacterial, fungal or viral, that they have in common,? he said. ?They were all debilitated, suffering from general sickness.?

Karenia was not present anywhere in Southwest Florida.

The Conference of Catholic Bishops has warned that reiki, an alternative therapy involving the channelling of "energy" from the therapist to the patient, "lacks scientific credibility" and also risks exposing people to "malevolent forces", a notion which is of course hugely credible and strongly supported by scientists, particularly those working in Malevolent Forces and Evil Spirits research departments around the world

In an earlier article, I pointed out that in the middle games, you cannot possibly visualize all the positions that can emanate from your next 4-5 moves without having a computer-like memory. Most likely, you will decide on the next move based on your reading of the overall position.

But in the endgame, with few pieces standing on the board, it is possible to make a deeper analysis and this often makes the difference between a win and a draw or loss. But it is easier said than done, as even experienced players sometimes fail to see the right moves available as it is, or fail to identify a bad move from the opponent that could be exploited.

Limbaugh: If Obama fails, America is saved

Based on what weve seen with General Motors and the banks, if he fails, America is saved. Barack Obamas policies and their failure is the only hope weve got to maintain the America of our founding.

I think the best way to understand Obama -- and I cant say this enough -- he really believes it his job to return the nations wealth to its rightful -- quote unquote, rightful owners. And that means he believes the people who have wealth have stolen it, from those who have no wealth. Its been unfair achieved and accrued. And its his job to take it and redistribute it. And thats what he means by sacrifice. When he talks about sacrifice, hes talking about raising your taxes, taking your assets, and giving them to other people who he thinks you stole them from, who are thus more deserving.

Sorry, Andrew, but youre sadly mistaken. We hear Rush Limbaugh all too much.

From an Antarctic research station to the Great Pyramids of Egypt, illuminated patches of the globe went dark yesterday for Earth Hour, a campaign to highlight the threat of climate change.

Time zone by time zone, nearly 4,000 cities and towns in 88 countries joined the event sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund to dim non-essential lights from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

The campaign began in Australia in 2007 and last year grew to 400 cities worldwide.

    Big Ben

Organisers initially worried enthusiasm this year would wane with the world focused on the global economic crisis.

Earth Hour has always been a positive campaign; its always around street parties, not street protests, its the idea of hope, not despair. And I think thats something thats been incredibly important this year because there is so much despair around, he said.

The US envoy to Afghanistan has held "a cordial exchange" with Irans deputy foreign minister, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said.

    Hillary Clinton

The meeting between Richard Holbrooke and Mohammad Mehdi Akhoondzadeh took place on the sidelines of a meeting in The Hague to discuss Afghanistan.

The US has welcomed Irans presence at the meeting.

Analysts say the easing of tensions between the US and Tehran is due to a new tone set by the Obama White House.

Earlier, Iran gave a guarded welcome to US plans to increase regional co-operation over Afghanistan.

The spirit of generosity in the American people is one of the greatest assets of our nation, Rep. WASHINGTON (AP) -- Tens of thousands of Americans, from teenagers to baby boomers, soon will get a fresh chance to lend a helping hand in a time of need after Congress voted Tuesday to expand ways for people to serve the country and each other.

The House voted 275-149 for a $5.7 billion bill that takes ambitious steps on public service, including tripling the number of positions in the Clinton-era AmeriCorps program, its largest expansion since the agencys creation in 1993, and establishing a fund to help nonprofit organizations recruit and manage more volunteers.

Congress was sending the bill to President Barack Obama, who often cites his years as a Chicago community organizer for giving him his political start. Obama has made bolstering national service programs a high priority, and in his overall budget proposal has called for more than $1.1 billion for the programs, an increase of more than $210 million.

Why is it some bees can be queen? How can a nurse bee suddenly transform into a forager, just when foragers are needed most? And how can these furry flying insects cast light on our own human behaviors?

The answers lie in the interactions of genes in the honey bee genome. And Saurabh Sinha needs grid computing to seek these answers out.

?The honey bee can be a model to understand complex societies,? explains Sinha, a professor of computer science and affiliate of the University of Illinois?s Institute for Genomic Biology.

?By studying the social regulation of gene expression, we hope to extrapolate the biology to humans.?

?It?s not as if a particular honey bee behavior is exactly mapped in humans,? he says. ?But, if we can discover some general principles for the genetic basis of social behavior, we hope they will largely carry forward to human behavior.?

Everyone wants to live to a ripe old age - and it doesnt take a dietary expert to know that eating healthily does that ambition no harm.

But ask anyone who has actually reached the magic 100 how they got there, and their dietary tips dont always square with the official advice. So we asked Dr Elisabeth Weichselbaum, of the British Nutrition Foundation, to cast an eye over a selection of centenarians staples.

Allegations Abound as Search Continues for Missing Child Haleigh Cummings

Haleigh Cummings, the child who vanished from Putnam County, Florida is still missing. It has been 47 days since her disappearance

Last week, Haleigh?s mother?s attorney- in a series of court filings- claimed that Haleigh?s father ritually abused her and her younger brother Junior.

Haleigh?s mother (Crystal Sheffield) alleges that her father, Ronald Cummings, physically abused both children as a means of punishment. In a statement to the press, Haleigh?s Grandmother denied the allegations saying, ?This is not the first time theyve pulled this out -- its not the first time. I don?t think its going to turn out the way they want it to. They must want custody really bad,? and asserting that Ronald Cummings never abused his children.

As DCF runs their investigation, well run a parallel investigation with them and make a determination whether theres anything to the accusations, and if so, if theres anything criminal about it or whatever has to be done.

The Idea: ?car pooling? is famous and successful wherever it was applied. This is in practice for many other developed cities.

The solution: Provide the permission to use the bus lanes for cars which carry 3 or more adults during busy hours. How it works: Find people from the neighbourhood or on the route that has a similar destination and share the car with them. When the passengers are 3 or more they can use the bus lanes to reach their destination. This can be done creating a website for people to find their fellow passengers.

(AP)  Google will lay off 200 workers as the recession squeezes even the Internets most profitable company.

The job cuts announced Thursday mark the second round of cuts at Google this year. The Mountain View-based company earlier decided to jettison 100 employee recruiters because it doesnt expect to hire as many people this year.

The latest layoffs are concentrated in the sales and marketing division that brings in the advertising that finances Googles search engine, e-mail and other free services.

In a blog posting, Google said it had hired too many employees doing the same jobs when it rapidly expanded its payroll over the past four years. The about-face affects less than 1 percent of Googles 20,200 employees.

The Torture Apologists Have No Place Left To Hide

Abu Zubaida was the alpha and omega of the Bush administrations argument for torture.

Thats why Sundays front-page Washington Post story by Peter Finn and Joby Warrick is such a blow to the last remaining torture apologists.

Finn and Warrick reported that "not a single significant plot was foiled" as a result of Zubaidas brutal treatment -- and that, quite to the contrary, his false confessions "triggered a series of alerts and sent hundreds of CIA and FBI investigators scurrying in pursuit of phantoms."

But as author Ron Suskind reported almost three years ago -- and as The Post now confirms -- almost all the key assertions the Bush administration made about Zubaida were wrong.

Zubaida wasnt a major al Qaeda figure. He wasnt holding back critical information. His torture didnt produce valuable intelligence -- and it certainly didnt save lives.

    What is Conficker.c

    clipped by: wiganfootie
    Clip Source: www.cnn.com

(CNN) -- Remember the dire predictions surrounding the "millennium bug?" The doom-and-gloom scenarios bandied about by security analysts on how computers could act when their clocks turned to January 1, 2000?

Computer users will not know that Conficker.c has infected their machine.

Well, researchers are hoping that a potential April Fools time bomb -- the Conficker.c that is supposed to hit computers on April 1 -- turns out to be equally unfounded.

But realizing that hope alone is not a prudent option, here is a primer on the worm so you can adequately prepare yourself -- and your computer.

What is Conficker.c and what do analysts fear it may do?

Conficker.c is a worm, a malicious program thought to have already infected between 5 million and 10 million computers.

Experts said computer hackers largely have moved away from showboating and causing random trouble. They now usually try to make money off their viral programs. Video Watch more on the worm »

Computer Virus Time Bomb Could Go Off April

    clipped by: 4freedomstantra
    Clip Source: www.foxnews.com

Conficker is a sophisticated piece of malicious computer software, or malware, that installs itself on a Windows PCs hard drive via specially written Web pages. It then conceals itself on a computer.

Graham Cluley of the British security firm Sophos confirmed that Conficker is programmed "to hunt for new instructions on April 1."

However, he added, "This does not mean that anything is going to happen, or that the worm is actually going to do anything. Simply, it is scheduled to hunt a wider range of Web sites for instructions on that date."

One strange thing about Conficker is that no one yet has any idea what it is programmed to do.

A worst-case scenario for April 1 would be for all the worlds millions of infected computers to receive simultaneous instructions to attack, or to flood the Internet with spam e-mail.

"April 1 is a classic date for anything like this to go off," he said. "But I really would hate to say that April 1 is going to be unlike any other day."
