A New Berlin student accused of blackmailing other boys for sex in a scam that started on Facebook may learn this week whether he will stand trial. Anthony Stancl (STAN-sihl) is accused of posing as a girl on the social networking site and tricking his classmates, one as young as 15, into sending him naked photos of themselves. A criminal complaint says the 18-year-old then used the photos to blackmail the boys for sex acts. Defense attorney Craig Kuhary has said Stancl plans to plead not guilty to the charges. A preliminary hearing is set for Thursday. The district attorney has to prove that sufficient evidence exists for the case to move to trial. . Let Stimulus Help Keep Down Global Warmingclipped by: benaloy![]() The economic pickle the nation is in could actually prove to do something good for the global warming battle - if were smart about it. The money in Obamas plan could be allocated toward ensuring that the jobs created are all "green jobs" - which includes positions in the renewable energy sector as well as for restoration of our damaged ecosystem. The economic stimulus package could do some real good for the worlds long-term health, if we let it. Its now time to recognize that and push the government to use these funds for jobs that can really make a difference. Endorphins released during orgasm stimulate immune system cells, which also helps target illnesses like cancer, as well as wrinkles, it states. "Yes, there is evidence that sex has benefits for mental wellbeing, but to say there is a link with reduced risk of heart disease and cancer is taking the argument too far." NHS Direct, however, told the paper the content was "backed by science and clinical evidence" and "isnt just a bit of fun". Child abuse alters stress gene |

Analysis of brain tissue from adults who had committed suicide found key genetic changes in those who had suffered abuse as a child.
It affects the production of a receptor known to be involved in stress responses, the researchers said.
The Nature Neuroscience study underpins the impact of stress on early brain development, experts said.
Previous research has shown that abuse in childhood is associated with an increased reaction to stressful circumstances.
But exactly how environmental factors interact with genes and contribute to depression or other mental disorders in adulthood is not well understood.
They found chemical changes which reduced the activity of the gene in those who suffered child abuse.

RIP --beautiful Aqsa Parvez
clipped by: Antaraclippers remarks: Another gorgeous girl dies at the hands of her "family"....and the gruesome honour killing death toll continues. This story is even more distressing in that a movement to try and place a proper marker/memorial( in place of the number 774) on her grave has been met with both a stunning refusal from her family (also her executioners) and, of course, spineless bs spouted by the ongoing fear based DHIMMITUDE that continues to plague supposed civilized nations worldwide. Pam Geller from Atlas Shrugged is on the case...GO PAM!! http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2008/12/canada-no-heads.html

Now that we have "honor killings" not just in Pakistan and Yemen but in Germany, Scandinavia, Britain, Ontario and Texas, we ought to bring ourselves up to speed on the correct form. Aqsa Parvez was murdered in Brampton (near Toronto) a year ago today. Joe Warmington of The Toronto Sun paid a visit to her grave:
Number 774. One year to the day Aqsa Parvez was stolen from this world ? allegedly by two members of her family ? that is all there is at her gravesite to show she even existed.
Section 17, plot number 774, in the Meadowvale Cemetery in Brampton, to be precise. No name, no date of birth, no date of death. No nothing...
Speaking in general terms, Fatah said "a victim of an honour killing is always left in an unmarked grave."
But a Minnesotan suicide bomber gets his remains brought home from Somalia at taxpayer expense for what looks here like a very respectful and well-attended funeral. An honorable death, presumably.

British Muslims Providing Electronics to Kill British Soldiers

The devices, which enable Taliban fighters to detonate roadside bombs by remote control, are either sent to sympathizers in the region, or carried by volunteers who fly to Pakistan and then make their way across the border.
They included mobile phones filled with explosives, which could kill or seriously injure British soldiers patrolling on foot, and more sophisticated devices that can be used against military vehicles.
Explosives experts who have examined the devices say they have found British-made electronic components that enable Taliban insurgents to detonate their home-made, road-side bombs by remote control.
When asked how the components had reached Afghanistan, the officer explained that they had either been sent from Britain, or physically brought to Afghanistan by British Muslims who had flown over.

Remarkably, it was his mother who spoke one of the decisive words of rescue. He tells the story:" (J. Gresham Machen: Selected Shorter Writings, 561)
We pass sometimes through periods of very low spiritual vitality. The wonderful gospel which formerly seemed to be so glorious comes to seem almost like an idle tale. Hosts of objections arise in our minds; the whole unseen world recedes in the dim distance, and we think for the moment that we have relinquished the Christian hope....
My mother [spoke to me] in those dark hours when the lamp burned dim, when I thought that faith was gone and shipwreck had been made of my soul. ?Christ,? she used to say, ?keeps firmer hold on us than we keep on him.?
My mother?s word meant...that salvation by faith does not mean that we are saved because we keep ourselves at every moment in an ideally perfect attitude of confidence in Christ. No, we are saved because having once been united to Christ by faith, we are his forever. Calvinism is a very comforting doctrine indeed. Without its comfort, I think I should have perished long ago in the castle of Giant Despair.

Lent: we can knash our teeth communally, lol
clipped by: Antaraclippers remarks: "We know we were wrong, but how much sackcloth n ashes can one country wear"? (I suspect a lot more than this)

Lent, which also always comes as a surprise, starts on Wednesday. What can we give up, now that all our luxuries, if they have not been taken from us, have become socially unacceptable and must be enjoyed behind closed doors? How can we atone for all this sin?
There was a time, back in the 20th century, when Archbishop John Charles McQuaid, a man who has not been celebrated for his sensitivity, offered Dublin Catholics the option of taking Lent easy, on the grounds they were suffering enough already. That was back when life in Ireland was one long economic downturn, so things must have been grim that year.
At the moment there is a real argument for declaring the last six months as having constituted a national and indeed global Lent, and that 40 days of feasting should start on Wednesday with us breaking out the Easter eggs and the roast lamb. We know we were wrong, but how much sackcloth and ashes can one country wear?
Giordano Bruno
clipped by: Antaraclippers remarks: Interesting fellow ...sadly he met a painful end due to his ideas which clashed with the Church at the time.

| Giordano Bruno |

Filippo Bruno was born in Nola, near Naples, the son of Giovanni Bruno, a soldier, and Fraulissa Savolino. He took the name Giordano upon entering the Dominican order. In the great Dominican monastery in Naples (where Thomas Aquinas had taught), Bruno was instructed in Aristotelian philosophy. His exceptional expertise in the art of memory brought him to the attention of patrons, and he was brought to Rome to demonstrate his abilities to the Pope. During this period he may also have come under the influence of Giovanni Battista Della Porta, a Neapolitan polymath who published an important book on natural magic. Bruno was attracted to new streams of thought, among which were the works of Plato and Hermes Trismegistus, both resurrected in Florence by Marsilio Ficino in the late fifteenth century. Hermes Trismegistus was thought to be a gentile prophet who was a contemporary of Moses. The works attributed to him in fact date from the turn of the Christian era.

Twenty years ago, I drove a cab for a living.
It was a cowboy?s life, a life for someone who wanted no boss.
What I didn?t realize was that it was also a ministry.
Because I drove the night shift, my cab became a moving confessional. Passengers climbed in, sat behind me in total anonymity, and told me about their lives. I encountered people whose lives amazed me, ennobled me, and made me laugh and weep.

Iraqi Museum Reopens - Sort of
clipped by: ruralartclippers remarks: To me, the looting of the museum is one of the very sad low points. The loss of the history of the region it entails is dismal.

A visitor to Iraq?s National Museum on Monday. Only 8 of the museum?s 26 galleries are open.
BAGHDAD ? Well over half the exhibition halls in Iraq?s National Museum are closed, darkened and in disrepair. And yet the museum, whose looting in 2003 became a symbol of the chaos that followed the American invasion, officially reopened on Monday.
Thousands of works from its collection of antiquities and art ? some of civilization?s earliest objects ? remain lost.
Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki pushed to reopen the museum, against the advice of his own Culture Ministry, as a sign of Iraqi progress. Symbol it was, and symbol it remains ? not only of how much Iraq has improved, but of how far it has to go.
?We did the best we could,? he explained, wistful that the museum remained less than what it once was. ?This is what we could do now. God willing, one day we will do more.?
"Narco-Subs" latest drug smuggling method
clipped by: gppixelworksColombian "narco-subs" latest drug smuggling method
Tonnes of illegal drugs make their way north from Colombia through Pacific waters in sleek jungle-built submarines that have been grimly christened "coffins" and are packed to the rim with powder white cocaine, headed for the U.S. market to satisfy the unflinching demand.
Skimming just below the water line, with only a glimpse of a glass-enclosed cockpit or metal tubes visible from above, the semi-submersibles are the latest shipment method used by trafficking cartels to try to elude detection by authorities.
A pilot and three or four crewmen squeeze into the cramped hulls of the craft on voyages from Colombias Pacific Coast up to Central America or Mexico, where their cargoes are offloaded for shipment to the United States, the U.S. Coast Guard says.
Iran - a sort of peace
clipped by: ruralartAt Palestine Square, opposite a mosque called Al-Aqsa, is a synagogue where Jews of this ancient city gather at dawn. Over the entrance is a banner saying: ?Congratulations on the 30th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution from the Jewish community of Esfahan.?
Of course, Israel?s unfinished cycle of wars has been with Arabs, not Persians, a fact that explains some of the discrepancy.
Still a mystery hovers over Iran?s Jews. It?s important to decide what?s more significant: the annihilationist anti-Israel ranting, the Holocaust denial and other Iranian provocations ? or the fact of a Jewish community living, working and worshipping in relative tranquillity.

Obama hopes to finesse the bad and the ugly by opening doors to Republicans and other ideological adversaries, but some are suspicious of the outreach. Sen. Observing the failure of an overextended US military to intervene in Darfur, Michael O?Hanlon offers a creative proposal in the latest New Republic: form a rapid-deployment US military division dedicated to stopping genocide in the future. A 20,000-strong force should do the job, he argues. The problem is, it can?t. O?Hanlon?like many in the stop-genocide movement?neglects what military intervention really entails.
Once the force halts genocide, what happens next? If the mayhem in Iraq should teach us anything, it is that invaders need to be ready to rebuild. Countries rarely come equipped with shadow governments that are organized, legitimate, and desirable for instant installation?especially countries torn by genocidal violence and hatred. That means US troops will be in charge.

Energy Secretary Hasn?t Got a Clue What US Energy Policy Is
clipped by: merrieclippers remarks: But at least he paid his taxes!
Mr. Chu said Thursday he feels ?like I?ve been dumped into the deep end of the pool? in confronting questions about oil policy, such as whether the administration would consider delaying scheduled deliveries of oil this spring to the nation?s strategic petroleum reserves.
Mr. Chu is still without a deputy, and the administration has yet to nominate people to fill other high-level Energy Department posts, reflecting a broader challenge the administration faces staffing up cabinet departments to handle an array of initiatives called for by President Barack Obama.
Have you ever heard anything so absurd? This is the cabinet officer charged with implementing Obama?s energy policy and the man is totally clueless as to what that policy is.
Wall Street Journal
February 20, 2009
WASHINGTON ? Energy Secretary Steven Chu ? whose agency has long taken the lead on global oil-market policy ? said Thursday he doesn?t know what the Obama administration would urge the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries to do at its meeting next month.
?I?m not the administration,? Mr. Chu said during a meeting with reporters Thursday. OPEC members are scheduled to meet March 15 to discuss the possibility of production cuts to respond to slumping prices. ?I will be speaking and learning more about this in order to figure out what the U.S. position should be and what the president?s position is,? Mr. Chu said.
?
On Wednesday, when approached by reporters after a speech to a group of utility regulators, Mr. Chu declined to offer an opinion on whether OPEC should cut production, saying the issue was ?not in my domain.? He later told reporters on a conference call that his response to the question reflected ?more of my naiveté than anything else.?

Astronomers gravitate toward Einsteins telescope
clipped by: tabseyclippers remarks: A visit to the source is better than the clip I put before ye.
Scientists are harnessing the cosmos as a scientific "instrument" in their quest to determine the makeup of the universe.
The University of Chicagos Evalyn Gates calls the instrument "Einsteins telescope." The instrument is actually the phenomenon of gravitational lensing, which acts as a sort of natural telescope. Gatess new book, Einsteins Telescope: The Hunt for Dark Matter and Dark Energy in the Universe, explains how it works.
Although based on Albert Einsteins general theory of relativity, the effect is easily demonstrated. Look at a light through the bottom of a wine glass, Gates recommends, and see the resulting light distortion.
"Einsteins telescope is using the universe itself as a lens through which we can seek out galaxies that would otherwise be too faint to be seen," says Gates, Assistant Director of the Universitys Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics.

comparing galaxies to human cells
clipped by: doodleiciousclippers remarks: i always thought some of the pictures Hubbles sent back look like a sort of cosmic rendition of the human reproductive system
Pop Quiz, everyone. The most wonderful, beautiful, and complicated things in the Universe are all made up of tiny components. Humans, the most differentiated animals on the planet, are made up of cells.

Galaxies, on the other hand, are made up primarily of stars. (At least, the portion of them that we can see is!)

Are there more cells in the typical human body or more stars in a typical galaxy?
The numbers are tremendous for both of these. Let?s start with humans. We start out as a zygote: a single fertilized egg cell.

So where are the rest of them? Moving through your body, keeping you alive and functioning. Your body contains about one trillion white blood cells of various types, about two trillion platelets, and a whopping 30 trillion red blood cells! This means every time you donate a pint of blood, you?re losing 4,000,000,000,000 cells!

Other police departments contacted by FOXNews.com said arrests would be made if an individual is determined to be residing at a foreclosed home illegally.

Swindles in which someone overseas seeks access to a person?s bank account are so well known that most potential victims can spot them in seconds.
Prosecutors said the scheme began in September, when Citibank received a package with documents purportedly signed by officials of the Ethiopian bank instructing Citibank to accept instructions by fax.
In October, Citibank received two dozen faxed requests for money to be wired, and it transferred $27 million to accounts controlled by the conspirators
Citibank called the officials whose names and numbers it had been given to verify the transactions, prosecutors said. The numbers turned out to be for cellphones in Nigeria, South Africa and Britain used by the conspirators.
Citibank has credited back the lost funds to the National Bank of Ethiopia, said one person who was briefed about the situation.

Imagine for a moment John McCain was President, and few of the people on the task force he created to repair the crumbling auto industry owned American cars.
Would that be a public relations nightmare?
Among the eight members named Friday to the Presidential Task Force on the Auto Industry and the 10 senior policy aides who will assist them in their work, two own American models. Add the Treasury Departments special adviser to the task force and the total jumps to three.
At least two task force members dont own a car, and there are still two open slots on the 10-member panel that will be filled by the secretaries of labor and commerce, who have not yet been appointed.
The co-chairs of the task force -- Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner and White House National Economic Council Director Lawrence Summers -- both own foreign automobiles.
Is this a bit of a public relations problem for the Adminstration and something that media would be criticizing if a Republican was in the White House?

US killer blood to blame for horrific human tragedy
clipped by: tabseyclippers remarks: "commercial interests appeared to have been given a higher priority than patient safety"
A public inquiry in Britain has found US suppliers of contaminated blood products were mainly responsible for thousands of people being infected with HIV and hepatitis C in the 1970s and 1980s.
Nearly 5,000 people were exposed to hepatitis C and more than 1,200 of those were also infected with HIV. Almost 2,000 have since died as a result.
The inquiry called the use of contaminated blood products to treat patients with haemophilia a "horrific human tragedy" and says commercial interests appeared to have been given a higher priority than patient safety.
Blood products were imported from the United States despite alarms being sounded about risky practices there such as paying people like prison inmates to donate blood.
The inquiry also called on the British Government to apologise to patients who contracted HIV and hepatitis C.
It criticised the inaction of successive governments in investigating the crisis and called for compensation for victims families.

At various times during the summer of 1997, an ultra-low frequency sound that rose rapidly in frequency over about one minute was detected at 50 degrees S, 100 degrees W. The sound was detected by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration with the Equatorial Pacific Ocean autonomous hydrophone array (which was U.S. Navy equipment originally designed to detect Soviet submarines), and was loud enough to be heard on multiple sensors, up to 5000km apart. Scientists dubbed it the ?Bloop? (not to be confused with the ?Boing ?.)
Although the sound matches the profile of a living animal, it is much louder than any known creature can produce. Any creature that could produce such a sound would have to be many times larger than the largest whale.
The actual origination of the sound is not known and remains a mystery to this day although it is suspected to be biological in origin.

clipped by: violetnightshadeFacebook and Bebo risk infantilising the human mind
Social network sites risk infantilising the mid-21st century mind, leaving it characterised by short attention spans, sensationalism, inability to empathise and a shaky sense of identity, according to a leading neuroscientist.
Arguing that social network sites are putting attention span in jeopardy, she said: "If the young brain is exposed from the outset to a world of fast action and reaction, of instant new screen images flashing up with the press of a key, such rapid interchange might accustom the brain to operate over such timescales. Perhaps when in the real world such responses are not immediately forthcoming, we will see such behaviours and call them attention-deficit disorder.
But Greenfield warned: "It is hard to see how living this way on a daily basis will not result in brains, or rather minds, different from those of previous generations. We know that the human brain is exquisitely sensitive to the outside world."

Pilot Chesley Sullenberger: 40% pay cut and pension terminated in recent years
clipped by: duliosclippers remarks: In testimony before Congress, Sullenberger and co-pilot Skiles argue against deregulation and for improved labor-management relations.
Sullenberger, a 58-year-old who joined a US Airways predecessor in 1980, told the House aviation subcommittee that his pay has been cut 40 percent in recent years and his pension has been terminated and replaced with a promise "worth pennies on the dollar" from the federally created Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. These cuts followed a wave of airline bankruptcies after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks compounded by the current recession, he said.

"The bankruptcies were used by some as a fishing expedition to get what they could not get in normal times," Sullenberger said of the airlines. He said the problems began with the deregulation of the industry in the 1970s.
Sullenbergers copilot Jeffrey B. Skiles said unless federal laws are revised to improve labor-management relations "experienced crews in the cockpit will be a thing of the past." And Sullenberger added that without experienced pilots "we will see negative consequences to the flying public."
