Hearing scheduled in Facebook sex scam

.
WAUKESHA, Wis. ? A New Berlin student accused of blackmailing other boys for sex in a scam that started on Facebook may learn this week whether he will stand trial.

Anthony Stancl (STAN-sihl) is accused of posing as a girl on the social networking site and tricking his classmates, one as young as 15, into sending him naked photos of themselves. A criminal complaint says the 18-year-old then used the photos to blackmail the boys for sex acts.
Defense attorney Craig Kuhary has said Stancl plans to plead not guilty to the charges.

A preliminary hearing is set for Thursday. The district attorney has to prove that sufficient evidence exists for the case to move to trial.

Case Against a Truth Commission

clipped by: benaloy

The Danger in Democrats Rush to Investigate

By David B. Rivkin Jr. and Lee A. Casey

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy called for a "truth commission" last week

John Conyers Jr. has introduced legislation to establish a National Commission on Presidential War Powers and Civil Liberties

The Constitution requires that anyone exercising significant authority under federal law be appointed by the president with the Senates advice and consent, or by department heads or the courts in the case of lower-level officials

the commission would be unlawful if it served anything but an advisory role

President Obamas charge sheet

By authorizing continued Predator missile attacks against al-Qaeda leaders in Afghanistan and Pakistan, he has directly targeted those "civilians" with deadly force. That is a war crime.

Obama should nip in the bud this recipe for a continuing political vendetta and veto the legislation.

Construction of the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in the City and Diocese of Washington, to give it its full name, lasted 83 years: from 1907 to 1990. The sixth-largest cathedral in the world features some curious gargoyles, one of which personifies Evil in the form of Darth Vader!

Disability charities have expressed anger after a number of parents complained that a one-armed childrens TV presenter was frightening their kids. Skip related content

Cerrie Burnell, who was born with one arm, began co-presenting Cbeebies Do And Discover slot with Alex Winters last month.

She has a broad range of success as an actor, both in the theatre and on television.

But parents on online forums have claimed she frightens their children.

Poster Barry wrote: "Is it just me, or does anyone else think the new woman presenter on Cbeebies (Cerrie Burnell) may scare the kids because of her disability?

"I didnt want to let my children watch the filler bits on the bedtime hour last night because I know it would have played on my eldest daughters mind and possibly caused sleep problems... and yes, this is a serious post."

Other posters suggest the BBC employed Miss Burnell to score points and accused the channel of positive discrimination.

The economic pickle the nation is in could actually prove to do something good for the global warming battle - if were smart about it. The money in Obamas plan could be allocated toward ensuring that the jobs created are all "green jobs" - which includes positions in the renewable energy sector as well as for restoration of our damaged ecosystem.

The economic stimulus package could do some real good for the worlds long-term health, if we let it. Its now time to recognize that and push the government to use these funds for jobs that can really make a difference.

In response, Sanford could offer him only his prayers:

Sanford offered no other alternative solution for his constituent and instead argued that the state could not accept money to extend unemployment benefits because ?increasing the tax on unemployment insurance? would negatively ?impact the caller?s family? (although he didn?t say how).

Sexercise yourself into shape

11 February 2006

Couple in bed

The NHS has some new advice for people struggling to schedule a fitness routine into their daily lives - a workout between the sheets.

According to the NHS Direct website, "sexercise" can lower the risk of heart attacks and helps people live longer.

Endorphins released during orgasm stimulate immune system cells, which also helps target illnesses like cancer, as well as wrinkles, it states.

"Yes, there is evidence that sex has benefits for mental wellbeing, but to say there is a link with reduced risk of heart disease and cancer is taking the argument too far."

NHS Direct, however, told the paper the content was "backed by science and clinical evidence" and "isnt just a bit of fun".

The advice, published under the headline "Get more than zeds in bed", is one of several sexual health-related articles to be found on the NHS Direct website.

Sex with a little energy and imagination provides a workout worthy of an athlete, the article says.

Mr Tripp suffered fatal brain damage when he knocked his head on the ground, Southwark Crown Court heard.

"I was absolutely disgusted," she said. "I was absolutely mortified.

"I couldnt believe what he had done. I was totally shocked.

Ms Richardson had been accused of pushing in front of the queue by fellow shopper Adrian Prendergast as she went to buy a packet of cigarettes.

"I was quite shocked," she said. "I didnt think I was pushing in front of anyone.

Shortly afterwards she phoned Virasami, who was waiting in a car nearby and came into the store, and she pointed out Mr Prendergast.

However, Virasami attacked Mr Tripp instead, the court heard.

From a scientific view point there is absolutely no doubt that evolution is a central theory for our understanding of the Universe and of life on Earth.

Creationism in any of its forms, such as ?intelligent design?, is not based on facts, does not use any scientific reasoning and its contents are pathetically inadequate for science classes.

Do We Still Feel The Same?

From a Gallup poll conducted in June:

When given a choice about how government should address the numerous economic difficulties facing today?s consumer, Americans overwhelmingly?by 84% to 13%?prefer that the government focus on improving overall economic conditions and the jobs situation in the United States as opposed to taking steps to distribute wealth more evenly among Americans.

That doesn?t bode well for Barack ?spread the wealth around? Obama and his ?tax cuts for 95% of Americans? plan, which for the 47% or so of Americans who have nothing or next to nothing in federal tax burden will mean nothing more than a check in the mail representing taxes paid by other people.

Americans, at least according to this poll, don?t want to be given other people?s money.  They want to be empowered to earn their own money.  That means pro-growth economics.  Lower taxes.  Less government.  More freedom.

Obama doesn?t stand for any of those things.

Barreleye2-350

The common name for the fish is "barreleyes." Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute investigators recently figured out why this species has such an unusual head. Its eyes can actually rotate within its "skull," so the transparency allows the wary swimmer to keep a literal eye on happenings above it, as well as to the sides and directly in front.

Using video cameras, MBARI researchers Bruce Robison and Kim Reisenbichler revealed the fishs eye movements. When remotely operated vehicles approached the fish, its eyes glowed a vivid green shade in the bright lights of the ROVs. Usually the fish were just hanging out motionless under the deep waters offshore Californias central coast.

Child abuse alters stress gene

23 February 2009

Child in distress

Abuse in early childhood permanently alters how the brain reacts to stress, a Canadian study suggests

Analysis of brain tissue from adults who had committed suicide found key genetic changes in those who had suffered abuse as a child.

It affects the production of a receptor known to be involved in stress responses, the researchers said.

The Nature Neuroscience study underpins the impact of stress on early brain development, experts said.

Previous research has shown that abuse in childhood is associated with an increased reaction to stressful circumstances.

But exactly how environmental factors interact with genes and contribute to depression or other mental disorders in adulthood is not well understood.

gene for the glucocorticoid receptor - which helps control the response to stress

They found chemical changes which reduced the activity of the gene in those who suffered child abuse.

reduced activity leads to fewer glucocorticoid receptors

Chicago links street cameras to 911 system

February 21, 2009

02/21/09:  The New York Times reports that Chicago can now immediately take a look at the crime scene if the 911 caller is in a location within 150 feet of one of the citys surveillance cameras, even before the first responders arrive.

The technology, a computer-aided dispatch system, was paid for with a $6 million grant from DHS.  It has been in use since a trial run in December.

The new system can also connect to cameras at private sites like tourist attractions, office buildings and university campuses.

9/29/08:  The Chicago Sun Times reports that a homeowner has taken Chicago city police up on their offer to link his privately owned security cameras to the citys 911 emergency center.

Several other businesses, universities, and high-rises have also signed up to share their video feeds with police.  Participants cite security concerns and a desire to combat crime as their motivation for joining.

Last year Matt Carpenter won six long-distance races, setting two course records. He is currently training for the Teva Mountain Games in Vail in June.

At 44, Carpenter is known as the grand paladin of high-altitude distance running. In 1993, he set record times ? still standing ? for the 13.3-mile Pikes Peak Ascent and the Pikes Peak Marathon, races he won again in 2001 and 2007, both times on consecutive days. He has also set speed marks in a high-altitude flat-surface marathon, a 50-mile race and a 100-mile race.

His resting heart rate has been measured at 33 beats a minute, lower than those of Michael Phelps and many astronauts. In a test at the United States Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, Carpenter?s VO2 max, a gauge of the body?s ability to process oxygen, registered at 90.2, perhaps a record high for a runner. (Only Bjorn Daehlie, a Norwegian cross-country skier, has scored higher. Lance Armstrong recorded an 81.)

They used imaging technology called magnetoencephalography to look at the brain activity of 20 volunteers while looking at pretty paintings and ugly pictures of cities and found clear sex differences when the test subjects saw images they described as beautiful.

Women use more of the whole brain when appreciating a nice piece of art, while men use mostly the right side

Most explanations of why men and women process this information differently focus on the use of the brain to navigate spatially

"Perhaps women make use of both global and local features in making their judgments, whereas men only rely on global features."

Language could also explain it. "Women obtain higher scores on a diversity of verbal and language tasks. Perhaps women are more likely to associate the images with verbal labels than men,

Crazy Goose Attacks a Man and his Dog on a Fishing Boat

Here?s something you don?t see too often?a Canada goose trying to pick on a sweet natured dog in a boat. I have no idea why this goose seems to have a thing for the dog though it maybe protecting a nest of eggs or perhaps it?s thinking the dog is a potential interloper in its territory? Either way the owner of the dog is clearly trying to avoid hurting the goose while protecting his dog each time he grabs it and then chucks it away. It gets even more surreal as the goose starts chasing the fishing boat later on!

Justice Department seeks to hold back lawsuits as FOIA rules rewritten

WASHINGTON - Despite President Barack Obamas vow to open government more than ever, the Justice Department is defending Bush administration decisions to keep secret many documents about domestic wiretapping, data collection on travelers and U.S. citizens, and interrogation of suspected terrorists.

In half a dozen lawsuits, Justice lawyers have opposed formal motions or spurned out-of-court offers to delay court action until the new administration rewrites Freedom of Information Act guidelines and decides whether the new rules might allow the public to see more.

Canadian union adopts Israel boycott resolution

Delegates at a Canadian Union of Public Employees conference of Ontario university locals on late Sunday adopted a resolution that would cut partnerships between universities in Ontario and universities in Israel.

The non-binding resolution is intended to protest Israels recent military action in Gaza. It now heads to CUPE Ontarios annual convention in May for further debate.

According to a CUPE Ontario news release, the motion also "encourages research into military connections between Ontario and Israeli universities, and calls on Ontario universities to refuse to conduct research that benefits the Israeli military."

Also last month, CUPE Ontario president Sid Ryan apologized for comparing Israels bombings of academic institutions in Gaza to actions perpetrated by the Nazis.

CEO Bernie Farber called it "bigoted and anti-Israel. It diminishes a once proud union."

The Canadian Jewish Congress expressed its "sadness and bitter disappointment"

The Left and a Womans Severed Head

Ask Nonie Darwish, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Wafa Sultan, Robert Spencer, Geert Wilders, read Nonies recent book Cruel and Usual Punishment, about the nature of Sharia law and Muslim women. My God, talk to Muslim feminist dissident-activists like UK-based Maryam Namazie, or the group ?Muslims against Sharia Law?

Within hours of the news of Aasiya Z. Hassans February 12th beheading, allegedly by her husband, Muzzamil Hassan, in Buffalo, American-Muslim organizations and individuals began a dirge bemoaning the existence of domestic violence. But thanks be to Allah, they affirmed, such violence exists among all faiths and ethnicities. Such family violence, they insisted, had nothing to do with Islam. Muslim leaders emphasized that honor killings were ?anti-Islamic" or "un-Islamic," a holdover from "pre-Islamic times." They vowed to preach against it in the mosque. All well and good.

That Mr. Hassan beheaded his wife--well, that simply wasnt dwelled upon.

Hassan selected the weapon or weapons. He planned this beheading. He was not out of control when he stabbed and beheaded his wife. He was controlling the situation in a Pakistani male Muslim kind of way:

Beating a wife is the "normal" way to relate to her. Killing her for being disobedient, in his mind, was what she deserved.

As a Jew, an American and a mother, I felt compelled to witness, firsthand, what my people and my taxdollars had done during this invasion

Visiting Gaza filled me with unbearable sadness

Unlike the primitive weapons of Hamas, the Israelis had so many sophisticated ways to murder, maim and destroy-unmanned drones, F-16s dropping "smart bombs" that miss, Apache helicopters launching missiles, tanks firing from the ground, ships shelling Gaza from the sea. So many horrific weapons stamped with Made in the USA

While Hamas attacks on Israeli villages are deplorable, Israels disproportionate response is unconscionable, with 1,330 Palestinians dead vs. 13 Israelis

If the invasion was designed to destroy Hamas, it failed miserably

Not only is Hamas still in control, but it retains much popular support.

If the invasion was designed as a form of collective punishment, it succeeded, leaving behind a trail of grieving mothers, angry fathers and traumatized children

Plague threat looms as Bangladesh rat problem grows

DHAKA (AFP) ? Bangladeshs remote Chittagong Hill Tracts region faces a serious risk of prolonged famine and bubonic plague unless a ballooning rat population is brought under control, experts say.

The UNs World Food Programme (WFP) began distributing three million dollars of emergency food supplies to some 120,000 people in the southeastern tribal area bordering India and Myanmar last May, after the rat population exploded.

The rats -- some weighing as much as 1.5 kilogrammes (3.3 pounds) -- feed on bamboo forests in the hilly region.

Dhaka University zoology professor Nurjahan Sarker recently visited the hill tracts and sounded the alarm over the "devastating" impact of the year-long rat plague.

"The threats of a famine-fuelled conflict are real as the rats are destroying everything in the hills," she said.

Obama pledges to slash deficit _ after increase

WASHINGTON (AP) - Urging strict future restraint even as current spending soars, President Barack Obama pledged on Monday to dramatically slash the skyrocketing annual budget deficit as he started to dole out the record $787 billion economic stimulus package he signed last week.

"If we confront this crisis without also confronting the deficits that helped cause it, we risk sinking into another crisis down the road," the president warned, promising to cut the yearly deficit in half by the end of his four-year term. "We cannot simply spend as we please and defer the consequences."

Wall Street seemed unimpressed by all the talk. The Dow Jones industrials dropped 251 points for the day.

Aqsa_parvez

Now that we have "honor killings" not just in Pakistan and Yemen but in Germany, Scandinavia, Britain, Ontario and Texas, we ought to bring ourselves up to speed on the correct form. Aqsa Parvez was murdered in Brampton (near Toronto) a year ago today. Joe Warmington of The Toronto Sun paid a visit to her grave:

Number 774. One year to the day Aqsa Parvez was stolen from this world ? allegedly by two members of her family ? that is all there is at her gravesite to show she even existed.

Section 17, plot number 774, in the Meadowvale Cemetery in Brampton, to be precise. No name, no date of birth, no date of death. No nothing...

Speaking in general terms, Fatah said "a victim of an honour killing is always left in an unmarked grave."

But a Minnesotan suicide bomber gets his remains brought home from Somalia at taxpayer expense for what looks here like a very respectful and well-attended funeral. An honorable death, presumably.

British Muslims are providing the Taliban with electronic devices to make roadside bombs

The devices, which enable Taliban fighters to detonate roadside bombs by remote control, are either sent to sympathizers in the region, or carried by volunteers who fly to Pakistan and then make their way across the border.

They included mobile phones filled with explosives, which could kill or seriously injure British soldiers patrolling on foot, and more sophisticated devices that can be used against military vehicles.

Explosives experts who have examined the devices say they have found British-made electronic components that enable Taliban insurgents to detonate their home-made, road-side bombs by remote control.

When asked how the components had reached Afghanistan, the officer explained that they had either been sent from Britain, or physically brought to Afghanistan by British Muslims who had flown over.

One day last summer, Google?s search engine trundled quietly past a milestone. It added the one trillionth address to the list of Web pages it knows about. But as impossibly big as that number may seem, it represents only a fraction of the entire Web.

Beyond those trillion pages lies an even vaster Web of hidden data: financial information, shopping catalogs, flight schedules, medical research and all kinds of other material stored in databases that remain largely invisible to search engines.

?Most search engines try to help you find a needle in a haystack,? Mr. Rajaraman said, ?but what we?re trying to do is help you explore the haystack.?

Prof. Juliana Freire at the University of Utah is working on an ambitious project called DeepPeep (www.deeppeep.org) that eventually aims to crawl and index every database on the public Web.

Clip Source: www.desiringgod.org

We pass sometimes through periods of very low spiritual vitality. The wonderful gospel which formerly seemed to be so glorious comes to seem almost like an idle tale. Hosts of objections arise in our minds; the whole unseen world recedes in the dim distance, and we think for the moment that we have relinquished the Christian hope....

My mother [spoke to me] in those dark hours when the lamp burned dim, when I thought that faith was gone and shipwreck had been made of my soul. ?Christ,? she used to say, ?keeps firmer hold on us than we keep on him.?

My mother?s word meant...that salvation by faith does not mean that we are saved because we keep ourselves at every moment in an ideally perfect attitude of confidence in Christ. No, we are saved because having once been united to Christ by faith, we are his forever. Calvinism is a very comforting doctrine indeed. Without its comfort, I think I should have perished long ago in the castle of Giant Despair.

Lent, which also always comes as a surprise, starts on Wednesday. What can we give up, now that all our luxuries, if they have not been taken from us, have become socially unacceptable and must be enjoyed behind closed doors? How can we atone for all this sin?

There was a time, back in the 20th century, when Archbishop John Charles McQuaid, a man who has not been celebrated for his sensitivity, offered Dublin Catholics the option of taking Lent easy, on the grounds they were suffering enough already. That was back when life in Ireland was one long economic downturn, so things must have been grim that year.

At the moment there is a real argument for declaring the last six months as having constituted a national and indeed global Lent, and that 40 days of feasting should start on Wednesday with us breaking out the Easter eggs and the roast lamb. We know we were wrong, but how much sackcloth and ashes can one country wear?

Giordano Bruno

Filippo Bruno was born in Nola, near Naples, the son of Giovanni Bruno, a soldier, and Fraulissa Savolino. He took the name Giordano upon entering the Dominican order. In the great Dominican monastery in Naples (where Thomas Aquinas had taught), Bruno was instructed in Aristotelian philosophy. His exceptional expertise in the art of memory brought him to the attention of patrons, and he was brought to Rome to demonstrate his abilities to the Pope. During this period he may also have come under the influence of Giovanni Battista Della Porta, a Neapolitan polymath who published an important book on natural magic. Bruno was attracted to new streams of thought, among which were the works of Plato and Hermes Trismegistus, both resurrected in Florence by Marsilio Ficino in the late fifteenth century. Hermes Trismegistus was thought to be a gentile prophet who was a contemporary of Moses. The works attributed to him in fact date from the turn of the Christian era.

When first assuming office in early 2001, President George W. Bush?s top foreign policy priority was not to prevent terrorism or to curb the spread of weapons of mass destruction?or any of the other goals he espoused later that year following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Rather, it was to increase the flow of petroleum from suppliers abroad to U.S. markets

He and his advisers considered the oil supply essential to the health and profitability of leading U.S. industries

?America faces a major energy supply crisis over the next two decades,? BAGHDAD ? Well over half the exhibition halls in Iraq?s National Museum are closed, darkened and in disrepair. And yet the museum, whose looting in 2003 became a symbol of the chaos that followed the American invasion, officially reopened on Monday.

Thousands of works from its collection of antiquities and art ? some of civilization?s earliest objects ? remain lost.

Colombian "narco-subs" latest drug smuggling method

Tonnes of illegal drugs make their way north from Colombia through Pacific waters in sleek jungle-built submarines that have been grimly christened "coffins" and are packed to the rim with powder white cocaine, headed for the U.S. market to satisfy the unflinching demand.

Anti-drug policemen walk past bag of coca leaves in an area of cocaine laboratories near Saravena

Skimming just below the water line, with only a glimpse of a glass-enclosed cockpit or metal tubes visible from above, the semi-submersibles are the latest shipment method used by trafficking cartels to try to elude detection by authorities.

A pilot and three or four crewmen squeeze into the cramped hulls of the craft on voyages from Colombias Pacific Coast up to Central America or Mexico, where their cargoes are offloaded for shipment to the United States, the U.S. Coast Guard says.

The smuggling runs from Colombia to Mexico or Guatemala, where the cocaine is offloaded for shipment to the United States, can take up to two weeks.

Of course, Israel?s unfinished cycle of wars has been with Arabs, not Persians, a fact that explains some of the discrepancy.

Still a mystery hovers over Iran?s Jews. It?s important to decide what?s more significant: the annihilationist anti-Israel ranting, the Holocaust denial and other Iranian provocations ? or the fact of a Jewish community living, working and worshipping in relative tranquillity.

At the synagogue, Benhur Shemian, 22, told me Gaza showed Israel?s government was ?criminal,? but still he hoped for peace. At the Al-Aqsa mosque, Monteza Foroughi, 72, pointed to the synagogue and said: ?They have their prophet; we have ours. And that?s fine.?

Obama hopes to finesse the bad and the ugly by opening doors to Republicans and other ideological adversaries, but some are suspicious of the outreach. Sen. U.S. Pressed to Add Billions to Bailouts

The government?s boldest rescue to date, its $150 billion commitment for the insurance giant American International Group, is foundering. A.I.G. indicated on Monday it was now negotiating for tens of billions of dollars in additional assistance as losses have mounted.

The government faced mounting pressure on Monday to put billions more in some of the nation?s biggest banks, two of the biggest automakers and the biggest insurance company, despite the billions it has already committed to rescuing them.

Separately, the Obama administration confirmed it was in discussions to aid Citigroup, the recipient of $45 billion so far, that could raise the government?s stake in the banking company to as much as 40 percent.

The deepening global downturn is dragging down all kinds of businesses, and, with no bottom to the recession in sight,

Acquiring common stock would give the government more control, but expose it to more risk.

What it Really Takes to Stop Genocide

Observing the failure of an overextended US military to intervene in Darfur, Michael O?Hanlon offers a creative proposal in the latest New Republic: form a rapid-deployment US military division dedicated to stopping genocide in the future. A 20,000-strong force should do the job, he argues. The problem is, it can?t. O?Hanlon?like many in the stop-genocide movement?neglects what military intervention really entails.

Once the force halts genocide, what happens next? If the mayhem in Iraq should teach us anything, it is that invaders need to be ready to rebuild. Countries rarely come equipped with shadow governments that are organized, legitimate, and desirable for instant installation?especially countries torn by genocidal violence and hatred. That means US troops will be in charge.

Energy Secretary Hasn?t Got a Clue What US Energy Policy Is

Mr. Chu said Thursday he feels ?like I?ve been dumped into the deep end of the pool? in confronting questions about oil policy, such as whether the administration would consider delaying scheduled deliveries of oil this spring to the nation?s strategic petroleum reserves.

Mr. Chu is still without a deputy, and the administration has yet to nominate people to fill other high-level Energy Department posts, reflecting a broader challenge the administration faces staffing up cabinet departments to handle an array of initiatives called for by President Barack Obama.

Have you ever heard anything so absurd? This is the cabinet officer charged with implementing Obama?s energy policy and the man is totally clueless as to what that policy is.

Wall Street Journal
February 20, 2009

WASHINGTON ? Energy Secretary Steven Chu ? whose agency has long taken the lead on global oil-market policy ? said Thursday he doesn?t know what the Obama administration would urge the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries to do at its meeting next month.

?I?m not the administration,? Mr. Chu said during a meeting with reporters Thursday. OPEC members are scheduled to meet March 15 to discuss the possibility of production cuts to respond to slumping prices. ?I will be speaking and learning more about this in order to figure out what the U.S. position should be and what the president?s position is,? Mr. Chu said.
?
On Wednesday, when approached by reporters after a speech to a group of utility regulators, Mr. Chu declined to offer an opinion on whether OPEC should cut production, saying the issue was ?not in my domain.? He later told reporters on a conference call that his response to the question reflected ?more of my naiveté than anything else.?

Washington, DC ? February 23, 2009 ? Today, Military Families United released a national advertisement in response to the breaking news that Binyam Mohamed, an ?unlawful enemy combatant? was released from Guantanamo Bay and freed in England. This is an unprecedented release because it is the first time that a GITMO detainee, who is classified as an ?Unlawful Enemy Combatant? has been released - meaning that he still poses a threat to our national security and the security of our allies. All of the previous released GITMO detainees were declassified and determined to no longer be of intelligence value or pose a threat to our country.

As I read celebrity atheist Christopher Hitchenss recent Newsweek attack on the pope in particular and Roman Catholicism in general, I remembered an incident that happened when I was in the U.K. in early January. Walking out of Londons Victoria Station, I was stopped by a TV reporter who asked me what I thought about the British atheists newest ad campaign. It was one of those typical man-in-the-street interviews, with a reporter and a cameraman buttonholing passersby to find a snappy quote for the evening news.

Britain has actually recognized atheism for some time now. As a country with an officially established church, it requires all its state primary schools to include religious-education classes.

Yet one mandate of all these classes involves introducing students to religious diversity and pluralism rather than teaching any specific dogma. In 2004, the government decided that pluralism requires that all schools include some instruction on atheism.

Scientists are harnessing the cosmos as a scientific "instrument" in their quest to determine the makeup of the universe.

The University of Chicagos Evalyn Gates calls the instrument "Einsteins telescope." The instrument is actually the phenomenon of gravitational lensing, which acts as a sort of natural telescope. Gatess new book, Einsteins Telescope: The Hunt for Dark Matter and Dark Energy in the Universe, explains how it works.

Although based on Albert Einsteins general theory of relativity, the effect is easily demonstrated. Look at a light through the bottom of a wine glass, Gates recommends, and see the resulting light distortion.

"Einsteins telescope is using the universe itself as a lens through which we can seek out galaxies that would otherwise be too faint to be seen," says Gates, Assistant Director of the Universitys Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics.

Pop Quiz, everyone. The most wonderful, beautiful, and complicated things in the Universe are all made up of tiny components. Humans, the most differentiated animals on the planet, are made up of cells.

Galaxies, on the other hand, are made up primarily of stars. (At least, the portion of them that we can see is!)

Are there more cells in the typical human body or more stars in a typical galaxy?

The numbers are tremendous for both of these. Let?s start with humans. We start out as a zygote: a single fertilized egg cell.

So where are the rest of them? Moving through your body, keeping you alive and functioning. Your body contains about one trillion white blood cells of various types, about two trillion platelets, and a whopping 30 trillion red blood cells! This means every time you donate a pint of blood, you?re losing 4,000,000,000,000 cells!

The point in all of Palin?s verbal gymnastics and Johnny-come-lately photo ops with an evangelical on each arm is this:  none of this is Palin?s fault, the state?s fault, the government?s fault or due to the fact that the Rural Advisor position sat vacant for months after its last occupant left in frustration that she wasn?t able to schedule a meeting with the governor in the ten months

he probability that Palin would spontaneously decide that something needed to be done, without having been shamed into action by bloggers, independent media, the Native community, the Anchorage Daily News and other mainstream newspapers, Jay Ramras, Bob Poe, CNN, Mark Begich, Lisa Murkowski, talk radio, and countless others is slim at best.

How to Save New Brain Cells

  • Thousands of new cells are generated in the adult brain every day, particularly in the hippocampus, a structure involved in learning and memory.

  • Within a couple of weeks, most of those newborn neurons will die, unless the animal is challenged to learn something new. Learning?especially that involving a great deal of effort?can keep these new neurons alive.

  • Although the neurons do not seem to be necessary for most types of learning, they may play a role in predicting the future based on past experience. Enhancing neurogenesis might therefore help slow cognitive decline and keep healthy brains fit.

  • Why would the brain go through the trouble of producing new cells only to have them disappear rapidly?

From our work in rats, the answer seems to be: they are made ?just in case.?

An activist with ACORN ? the Association of Community Organization for Reform Now ? faces criminal charges after breaking into a home in southeast Baltimore on Thursday to protest the foreclosure crisis sweeping the country.

"This is our house now," ACORN member Louis Beverly reportedly said after cutting a lock with bolt cutters at the home.

Other police departments contacted by FOXNews.com said arrests would be made if an individual is determined to be residing at a foreclosed home illegally.

The flood of foreclosures across the country has already led some law enforcement officials to alter how they handle evictions.

Cox said he expects homesteading ? refusing to vacate a foreclosed property ? will become common as blame for the foreclosure crisis increasingly shifts from homeowners to financial corporations.

    Citibank Fell for Nigerian Scam

    Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

Swindles in which someone overseas seeks access to a person?s bank account are so well known that most potential victims can spot them in seconds.

Prosecutors said the scheme began in September, when Citibank received a package with documents purportedly signed by officials of the Ethiopian bank instructing Citibank to accept instructions by fax.

In October, Citibank received two dozen faxed requests for money to be wired, and it transferred $27 million to accounts controlled by the conspirators

Citibank called the officials whose names and numbers it had been given to verify the transactions, prosecutors said. The numbers turned out to be for cellphones in Nigeria, South Africa and Britain used by the conspirators.

Citibank has credited back the lost funds to the National Bank of Ethiopia, said one person who was briefed about the situation.

A NASA satellite crashed back to Earth about three minutes after launch early Tuesday, officials said.

"We could not make orbit," NASA program manager John Brunschwyler said. "Initial indications are the vehicle did not have enough [force] to reach orbit and landed just short of Antarctica in the ocean."

The satellite, which would have monitored greenhouse gases to study how they affect the Earths climate, was launched on a rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 1:55 a.m. PT

But the payload fairing -- a clamshell-shaped structure that allows the satellite to travel through space -- failed to separate from the rocket, NASA officials said

The weight of the fairing caused the rocket and the satellite to come crashing down to Earth about three minutes later.

The $273 million satellite, called the Orbiting Carbon Observatory, would have collected "precise global measurements of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the Earths atmosphere" to help better forecast the changes in carbon dioxide

"As an active-duty officer in the United States Army, I have grave concerns about the constitutional eligibility of Barack Hussein Obama to hold the office of president of the United States," wrote Scott Easterling in a "to-whom-it-may-concern" letter.

Obama "has absolutely refused to provide to the American public his original birth certificate, as well as other documents which may prove or disprove his eligibility

Imagine for a moment John McCain was President, and few of the people on the task force he created to repair the crumbling auto industry owned American cars.

Would that be a public relations nightmare?

Among the eight members named Friday to the Presidential Task Force on the Auto Industry and the 10 senior policy aides who will assist them in their work, two own American models. Add the Treasury Departments special adviser to the task force and the total jumps to three.

At least two task force members dont own a car, and there are still two open slots on the 10-member panel that will be filled by the secretaries of labor and commerce, who have not yet been appointed.

The co-chairs of the task force -- Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner and White House National Economic Council Director Lawrence Summers -- both own foreign automobiles.

Is this a bit of a public relations problem for the Adminstration and something that media would be criticizing if a Republican was in the White House?

Child Abuse May Leave a Lasting Mark on Victims DNA

    clipped by: chestnut501
clippers remarks: Epigenetic Changes are Potentially Reversible
    sad kid

Victims of child abuse may bear chemical marks on their genomes that alter the way they respond to stress as adults

Researchers say they detected changes, almost like genetic scars, to a region of the genome that either promotes or tamps down the expression of a certain gene involved in stress responses. This could help explain why childhood abuse, such as sexual abuse or neglect, can cause depression, other mental health effects and suicide, and could some day lead to treatments to help victims overcome their abusive childhoods [Reuters].

The results are the latest exciting findings in the young field of epigenetics, the process by which environmental factors can alter the expression of genes. In epigenetic changes, the DNA sequence itself isn?t altered, but other mechanisms change certain genes? activities.

The exciting thing about epigenetic alterations is that they are potentially reversible, and thus perhaps a future target for therapeutic intervention?

US killer blood to blame for horrific human tragedy

    Clip Source: www.abc.net.au

A public inquiry in Britain has found US suppliers of contaminated blood products were mainly responsible for thousands of people being infected with HIV and hepatitis C in the 1970s and 1980s.

Nearly 5,000 people were exposed to hepatitis C and more than 1,200 of those were also infected with HIV. Almost 2,000 have since died as a result.

The inquiry called the use of contaminated blood products to treat patients with haemophilia a "horrific human tragedy" and says commercial interests appeared to have been given a higher priority than patient safety.

Blood products were imported from the United States despite alarms being sounded about risky practices there such as paying people like prison inmates to donate blood.

The inquiry also called on the British Government to apologise to patients who contracted HIV and hepatitis C.

It criticised the inaction of successive governments in investigating the crisis and called for compensation for victims families.

William Jackson was a slave in the home of Confederate president Jefferson Davis during the Civil War. It turns out he was also a spy for the Union Army, providing key secrets to the North about the Confederacy.

Jackson was Davis house servant and personal coachman. He learned high-level details about Confederate battle plans and movements because Davis saw him as a "piece of furniture" -- not a human, according to Ken Dagler, author of "Black Dispatches," which explores espionage by Americas slaves.

"Because of his role as a menial servant, he simply was ignored," Dagler said. "So Jefferson Davis would hold conversations with military and Confederate civilian officials in his presence." .

Although the sound matches the profile of a living animal, it is much louder than any known creature can produce.  Any creature that could produce such a sound would have to be many times larger than the largest whale.

Mathematician Andrew Hicks designs unusual mirrors that reflect wide panoramas or even show text the right way round

    Non-reversing mirror

This mirror does not produce a "mirror" image, making it possible to read reflected text normally.

Hicks, a mathematician at Drexel University, Philadelphia, used computer algorithms to generate the mirrors bizarre surface, which curves and bends in different directions. The curves direct rays from an object across the mirrors face before sending them back to the viewer, flipping the conventional mirror image.

As well as neat tricks like this, Hicks models make it possible to design mirrors that provide wide angled-views or eliminate distortion.

Climate change lays waste to Spain?s glaciers

While glaciers covered 3,300 hectares of land on the mountain range that divides Spain and France at the turn of the last century, only 390 hectares remain, according to Spains environment ministry.

The most southerly glaciers in Europe are losing the battle against warming and look set to be among the first to disappear from the continent over the coming decades. Their loss will have a severe impact on summer water supplies in the foothills and southern plains south of the Pyrenees.

"This century could see (perhaps within a few decades) the total, or almost total, disappearance of the last reserves of ice in the Spanish Pyrenees and, as a result, a major change in the current nature of upper reaches of the mountains," the authors of the report on Spains glaciers said.

Scientists warn of potentially dramatic effects to agriculture as glaciers that feed rivers disappear, taking away a major source of summer water.

Do social sites infantilize the human mind?

Facebook and Bebo risk infantilising the human mind

Social network sites risk infantilising the mid-21st century mind, leaving it characterised by short attention spans, sensationalism, inability to empathise and a shaky sense of identity, according to a leading neuroscientist.

Arguing that social network sites are putting attention span in jeopardy, she said: "If the young brain is exposed from the outset to a world of fast action and reaction, of instant new screen images flashing up with the press of a key, such rapid interchange might accustom the brain to operate over such timescales. Perhaps when in the real world such responses are not immediately forthcoming, we will see such behaviours and call them attention-deficit disorder.

But Greenfield warned: "It is hard to see how living this way on a daily basis will not result in brains, or rather minds, different from those of previous generations. We know that the human brain is exquisitely sensitive to the outside world."

A long time ago in a galaxy not too far away, I introduced something called the "Planetary Model of Primary Politics". It is basically just a fancy way of noting that there are generally two dimensions by which candidates position themselves in Presidential primaries. One is along an ideological axis (liberal/conservative). The other is what I then called an institutional axis -- whether a candidate seeks to work within existing institutions or to reform them.

That is, it looks like a "galaxy" of ideological space, with the candidates representing the equivalent of stars or planets. Depending how fanciful we want to be, we can imagine the planets exerting gravitational forces upon one another, seeking to carve out their own safe space in the universe while at the same time stealing matter (voters) from their opponents.

clippers remarks: In testimony before Congress, Sullenberger and co-pilot Skiles argue against deregulation and for improved labor-management relations.

Sullenberger, a 58-year-old who joined a US Airways predecessor in 1980, told the House aviation subcommittee that his pay has been cut 40 percent in recent years and his pension has been terminated and replaced with a promise "worth pennies on the dollar" from the federally created Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. These cuts followed a wave of airline bankruptcies after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks compounded by the current recession, he said.

"The bankruptcies were used by some as a fishing expedition to get what they could not get in normal times," Sullenberger said of the airlines. He said the problems began with the deregulation of the industry in the 1970s.

Sullenbergers copilot Jeffrey B. Skiles said unless federal laws are revised to improve labor-management relations "experienced crews in the cockpit will be a thing of the past." And Sullenberger added that without experienced pilots "we will see negative consequences to the flying public."
