They are the key to self-growth, and of a deeper and more positive relationship with those around you. These words are: I dont know. If someone - and particularly a child - asks you a question about how something works or why something happens, and you dont know the answer or feel confident to explain it properly, the most important thing you can do is to admit, "I dont know". Once this has been said, the two of you can seek out the relevant knowledge and learn from it. Army officials believe that contributing factors include emotional and psychological stress caused by repeated combat deployments, along with the toll that the tours have taken on marriages. Billions and Billions of Baby Starsclipped by: benben1Billions and Billions of Baby Stars![]() When Carl Sagan said there were billions and billions of stars, he wasn?t wrong. But just how many billions, we still don?t know. Moreover, scientists would like to know how many of each size and type of star there is, and how our sun fits into the larger populations of stars in our galaxy and our universe. To further that goal, astronomers recently used the CISCO infrared camera on the Subaru telescope in Hawaii to observe a region called W3 Main, a well known baby star factory. The new images revealed the area, located about 6,000 light years away in the constellation Cassiopeia, in unprecedented detail. Studying star-forming regions is a good strategy for taking a census of stars, since most stars we see in these areas were formed at roughly the same time. When time is taken out of the equation, astronomers can get a better handle on how many stars of each mass range are formed, to discover which sizes are most common. Dominator Paradigmclipped by: baydawgclippers remarks: vs. the egalitarian paradigm The systemic root of our disconnection from nature can be directly traced to the dominator paradigm which started conquering and subverting egalitarian cultures 6-8,000 years ago, and was firmly ensconced by 2,000 BC. As detailed by author Riane Eisler, this paradigm consists of force-based ranking hierarchies of control (humans over nature, men over women, one race over another) that are built on and maintained by fear. The individual is seen as more important than the group, and anything outside of the ego is seen as other. This other is automatically assumed to be inferior or lesser, and thus morally acceptable to exploit for personal benefit. We end up seeing ourselves as separate from and able to control the natural world, our own inner nature, and all the rest of our relationships. In fact, we assume we must exert this control in order to assure our prosperity and to further human progress. has led to what I call the Triumvirate of Collapse Another Dem Tax Dodgerclipped by: sillysamclippers remarks: No wonder they dont mind raising taxes. Professor Colin Humphreys at Cambridge University has come up with a way to make them far cheaper than normal, creating a more efficient way to produce gallium nitride, a material required for the production of LEDs. His discovery could pave the way to LED bulbs that cost less than $5 a pop. However, were still at least a few years away before these could go into mass production, meaning youre going to have to keep hitting the Asprin or guiltily using your old incandescent bulbs. LED Light Bulbs That Last 60 Years to Get Cheaper ![]() Those old-school incandescent bulbs you grew up with are on their way out, deemed too inefficient for a continued life in todays eco-friendly society. But their replacements, compact flourescent (CFL), have their own share of issues. Some people find that the next-gen bulbs give them headaches, and since each one contains a bit of mercury they arent exactly green themselves. For that reason, many have seen LEDs as a possible replacement, but they have their issues, too, primary among them being cost. That could change thanks to a British professors newest tech, which could make the bulbs considerably cheaper. PLAY MORE. To such people the news that some of these Lords lavished themselves with billions of dollars of bonuses even as they had their hand out to Uncle Sam for help is not the least bit surprising. President Obama calls it irresponsible. Wise people call it by its real name: the predictable outcome of unregulated self interest. The only shocking thing is that Obama and others expected the Lords to act otherwise. President Barack Obama issued a withering critique Thursday of Wall Street corporate behavior, calling it "the height of irresponsibility" for employees to be paid more than $18 billion in bonuses last year while their crumbling financial sector received a bailout from taxpayers. "It is shameful," Obama said from the Oval Office. "And part of what were going to need is for the folks on Wall Street who are asking for help to show some restraint, and show some discipline, and show some sense of responsibility." The presidents comments, made with new Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner at his side, came in swift response to a report that employees of the New York financial world garnered an estimated $18.4 billion in bonuses last year. The figure, from the New York state comptroller, drew prominent news coverage. Obama said the public dislikes the idea of helping the financial sector dig out of a hole, only to see it get bigger because of lavish spending. But too much chatting with their friends can make girls prone to anxiety and depression, a study has found. But excessive discussion - known to the experts as co-rumination - can be unhelpful. There is a wealth of communication technology available to teens today that allows them to talk over and over again about the same emotional difficulties, said Dr Joanne Davila, the psychology professor who led the research. Texting, instant messaging and social networking make it very easy for adolescents to become even more anxious, which can lead to depression. People with chronic pain have three times the average risk of developing psychiatric symptoms ? usually mood or anxiety disorders ? and depressed patients have three times the average risk of developing chronic pain. When low energy, insomnia, and hopelessness resulting from depression or anxiety perpetuate and aggravate physical pain, it can be impossible to tell which came first or where one leaves off and the other begins. Pain slows recovery from depression, and depression makes pain more difficult to treat. For example, depression may cause patients to drop out of pain rehabilitation programs. So it often makes sense to treat both pain and depression; that way they are more likely to recede together. After decades of getting to know the furthest-flung corners of the world ? and its inhabitants ? Sir David Attenborough has vented his ire on the Bible for promoting the belief that man has complete dominion over the Earth. Sir David, probably the best-loved broadcaster and certainly the most distinguished television naturalist, has blamed the Book of Genesis for many environmental problems, from the burning down of tropical rainforests to the extinction of species. On the eve of a BBC1 documentary on the life of Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution, Sir David has criticised the centuries-old idea running through the Judaeo-Christian tradition which assumes God gave the Earth to man to exploit and use in whatever way he saw fit in order to populate the world. A Most Private Evolutionclipped by: Silkweaverclippers remarks: Trying to understand counterintuitive sexual parts and habits follows in the best of scientific traditions. As Charles Darwin worked on evolution, he pondered male phenomena that looked useless, or even harmful, for surviving. Outsized horns on male beetles puzzled him, as did male birds with gorgeous plumage. Out of this consternation came his insight into a process he called sexual selection, which he distinguished from natural selection. There may be survival of the fittest, but there?s also survival of the sexiest. ?The sight of a feather in a peacock?s tail, whenever I gaze at it, makes me sick!? Darwin wrote in a letter to the botanist Asa Gray, albeit in a whimsical paragraph. Nauseated or not, Darwin was willing to step beyond survival of the fittest. Maybe female seed beetles have their own what-the-bleep exclamation. Even for insects, it?s difficult to imagine any other reaction to a male Callosobruchus maculatus beetle?s sex organ, which has spikes. ?It jumps to mind as something quite dumb,? says Göran Arnqvist, an evolutionary biologist at Uppsala University in Sweden, who for much of the past eight years has studied seed beetle sex. Male beetles of several Callosobruchus species have sharp edges on their sperm-delivery organs. The females? ducts grow a bit of extra toughening but not enough to make sex safe from the risk of injury. Arnqvist has concluded that the genital excesses aren?t good for the species as a whole. These seed beetles would have less-damaging sex ? and would produce more babies ? if males lost their edges. Yet the most dramatic examples of the power of evolutionary theory may come from the strange and ugly stuff ? biology that seems too dumb to have been designed. A new approach to cancer treatment called immunotherapy could spare patients at least some of the grueling battery of chemotherapy treatments by retraining the bodys own defenders--the cells of the immune system--to recognize and destroy tumors. The experimental approach has shown great success in animal studies, increasing the survival rate of mice with a deadly melanoma from 0 to 90 percent. Now researchers at Harvard University have developed a simple way to do this inside the body: a polymer implant attracts and trains immune-system cells to go after cancer. The implant could also be used to treat diseases of the immune system such as arthritis and diabetes, and, potentially, to train other kinds of cells, including stem cells used to repair damage to the body. Microchips are commonly implanted into animals to reveal identification details when scanned and similar devices have been used with Alzheimers patients. US company VeriChip is already using implantable microchips, which store a 16-digit unique identification number, on humans for medical purposes. ?Our focus is on high-risk patients, and our product?s ability to identify them and their medical records in an emergency,? spokesperson Allison Tomek said. Republican Tunnel Visionclipped by: darkeforce![]() Throwing out the Trashclipped by: darkeforce![]() The Republican Death Spiral, in Graphic Formclipped by: reimers![]() This is a diagram of the partisan composition of the 109th and 111th Congresses. The 435 Congressional Districts are arranged from left (most Democratic) to right (most Republican) based on their PVI -- that is, partisan voting patterns in the 2000 and 2004 Presidential Elections. We see that most of the damage to the Republican Party has come in moderate districts. Not a big surprise really, but -- the numbers are fairly jarring. There are 81 districts with a PVI of between D+3 and R+3: these are your prototypical swing districts. After the 2004 elections, Republicans controlled 54 of these 81 seats and Democrats 27. Following Novembers elections, however, the ratio had almost exactly reversed itself: 55 Democrats and 26 Republicans. Framed differently: in the 109th Congress, about 3 out of every 10 Republican Congressmen came from swing or Democratic-leaning districts. Now, only about 1 in 6 does. The Republican conference is very very close, by the way, to being majority Southern. Bishop sorry for stressing the Popeclipped by: Antaraclippers remarks: ....but has not retracted his statements. One has to wonder how on earth he came to hold this position so forcefully! A bishop who denies that Jews were killed in Nazi gas chambers apologized Friday that his remarks caused "distress" for the pope. "Amidst this tremendous media storm stirred up by imprudent remarks of mine on Swedish television, I beg of you to accept, only as is properly respectful, my sincere regrets for having caused to yourself and to the Holy Father so much unnecessary distress and problems," Williamson wrote to Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos. He added that he has "only one comment, from the prophet Jonas, 1:12: Take me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you; for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you." He said the Vaticans decision to accept Williamson was part of its desire to normalize relations with the ultra-conservative group, and had nothing to do with the bishops personal views. ![]() The Big Mac Index: Analyzing exchange ratesclipped by: leike![]() The dollar?s recent revival has made fewer currencies look dear against the Big Mac index, our light-hearted guide to exchange rates. The index is based on the idea of purchasing-power parity, which says currencies should trade at the rate that makes the price of goods the same in each country. So if the price of a Big Mac translated into dollars is above $3.54, its cost in America, the currency is dear; if it is below that benchmark, it is cheap. There are three noteworthy shifts since the summer. The yen, which had looked very cheap, is now close to fair value. So is the pound, which had looked dear the last time we compared burger prices in July. The euro is still overvalued on the burger gauge, but far less so than last summer. So far nothing was heard of ?Anechka? in her homeland Russia. But she has become quite famous among the inhabitants of the United Sates. She is known as the social lioness of Manhattan and the newspapers of New York consider her to be a symbol of the ?New Russians?? expansion in the US. Anya came to the US in 1991 as a six-year-old girl. Her father Anisimov used to specialize in aluminum sales. The rivaling parties back in those days solved the problems of competition by shooting each other, and so the caring businessman sent his family overseas. At first Anya, her mother, grandmother and older sister all had only tourist visas. Bacon Explosion recipe an Internet hit KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 30 (UPI) -- A pair of Kansas City, Mo., pork enthusiasts said their online recipe for the artery-clogging Bacon Explosion has been viewed about 390,000 times. The Bacon Explosion, the brainchild of Aaron Chronister and friend Jason Day, contains two pounds of bacon coupled with two pounds of Italian sausage, totaling about 5,000 calories and 500 grams of fat, the Kansas City Star reported Friday. U.S. News & World Report quoted the two men as saying the dish was designed to attract visitors to their barbecuing teams Web site, BBQAddicts.com. But the reality is that he has only 47,000 soldiers under his command, together with another 18,000 troops fighting at their sides as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, and possibly another 75,000 reasonably well-trained soldiers in the Afghan army by the end of the year. All told, there is still a shortfall of 260,000 men. It started as a family joke: Facing snowballing medical expenses for their two young disabled children, Gregg and Brittiny Peters quipped they might need to sell everything they owned to stay solvent. As the bills tipped $10,000, however, the idea was no longer funny. So on Thursday, the Georgia couple accepted a winning $20,000 eBay bid for all their belongings minus their house. It came with one catch. The winning bidders, Donnia and Keith Blair of Texas, want the family to have the money, but keep their stuff. Thousands of people overdose on acetaminophen (Tylenol) every year because they do not realize that it exists in tandem with so many other drugs, many sold over the counter. The daily maximum is 4,000 milligrams. Jan. 30, 2009 -- An FDA advisory panel narrowly voted Friday to recommend that a popular pain drug used in dozens of products should be pulled from the market. The drug, called propoxyphene, has been sold in U.S. pharmacies for more than 50 years and today is used in dozens of generic pain medications. Two brand-name versions of the drug, Darvon and Darvocet, are used by millions of patients each year, according to the FDA. Propoxyphene is a narcotic opioid drug. It "looks like it offers placebo benefits with opioid risks," says Sean Hennessey, PhD, a panel member and epidemiologist from the University of Pennsylvania. The FDA considered the issue of propoxyphene after the watchdog group Public Citizen petitioned to have the drug removed. The agency initially did not respond, and the group sued the government to do a review. "It is at least gratifying to see that a majority of people think this drug should come off the market," Wolfe said after the panel vote. | ||||||||||
