While their friends jet off to Spain or the Greek islands, the siblings will be hunting for imaginary unicorns in Somerset, southwestern England, while learning about moral philosophy. The Jagos, from Basingstoke, Hampshire, are among 24 children who will be taking part in Britains first summer camp for atheists. The five-day retreat is being subsidized by Richard Dawkins, the evolutionary biologist and author of "The God Delusion," and is intended to provide an alternative to faith-based summer camps normally run by the Scouts and Christian groups. Crispian Jago, an IT consultant, is hoping the experience will enrich his two children. "Im very keen on not indoctrinating them with religion or creeds," he said earlier this month. "I would rather equip them with the tools to learn how to think, not what to think." The Coming Insurrection - A leftist call to armsclipped by: willhelmclippers remarks: Im telling you..these people are nuts. Fascists, Communists, Progressives..whatever. They are the same thing and they are twisted idiots. More from article: Hot-wired to the movement of 77 in Italy, its preferred historical reference point, The Coming Insurrection formulates an ethics that takes as its starting point theft, sabotage, the refusal to work, and the elaboration of collective, self-organized forms-of-life. It is a philosophical statement that addresses the growing number of those"in France, in the United States, and elsewhere"who refuse the idea that theory, politics, and life are separate realms. Thirty years of "crisis," mass unemployment, and flagging growth, and they still want us to believe in the economy. . . . We have to see that the economy is itself the crisis. Its not that theres not enough work, its that there is too much of it. ?from The Coming Insurrection The Coming Insurrection is an eloquent call to arms arising from the recent waves of social contestation in France and Europe. Written by the anonymous Invisible Committee in the vein of Guy Debord?and with comparable elegance?it has been proclaimed a manual for terrorism by the French government (who recently arrested its alleged authors). One of its members more adequately described the group as "the name given to a collective voice bent on denouncing contemporary cynicism and reality." The Coming Insurrection is a strategic prescription for an emergent war-machine to "spread anarchy and live communism." Climate Change Billclipped by: mklosinski This means that homeowners, for example, could be required to retrofit their homes to meet federal ?green? guidelines in order to sell their homes, if the cap-and-trade bill becomes law. It continues: ?The purpose of the REEP program is to facilitate the retrofitting of existing buildings across the United States.? In what sense is America a Christian nation?clipped by: wiccantexanIrans appeal to religious authorities for a binding decision on a national election struck me as odd. Or quaint. Or ominous. As an American, Ive never had to worry about a religious potentate or a group of ministers deciding for all of us who our next president would be. Somehow, though, the developments in Iran made me think of my recent appearance on Jack Patties radio call-in program on WVLK-590 AM. The question that morning was whether the United States is a "Christian nation." Quite a few callers had strong opinions, pro and con. I find that whole issue thorny. Iran, for instance, obviously is a Muslim nation; its a theocracy. But in what sense is America "Christian"? Here are a few thoughts: The people who argue that America was founded as a Christian nation rarely define what they mean. They might be right; they might be wrong. It depends entirely on how you use the words "Christian nation." When The Majority Writes The Rulesclipped by: wiccantexanWhen people complain about the growing list of requests for accommodation in public schools from students and parents from minority faiths, I like to remind them that the majority faith wrote the rules. Founded as Protestant-dominated institutions in the 19th century, public schools never open on Sunday, close for Christmas, and in other ways institutionalize accommodations for the majority faith. That?s why I applaud New York City Chancellor Joe Klein for arranging a special ceremony for a teenager who can?t attend her graduation because it?s being held on the Jewish Sabbath. With only one Jewish graduate, it is not surprising that Li Morse?s school didn?t try harder to find another day. Truth be told, America?s expanding religious diversity is making it harder and harder to find any day that will accommodate everyone. Heres How My Cap-and-Trade Plan Worksclipped by: merrieclippers remarks: You know the Cap-and-Trade bill that Democrats narrowly passed late last week? The bill -- the ill-named "American Clean Energy And Security Act of 2009, H.R. 2454") -- consists of well over a thousand pages of government intrusions into every aspect of your life. Among other things, the bill regulates farming; fertilizers; animal husbandry and animal diets; feedstock; soil; light bulbs; home mortgages; banking; power generation and transmission; water and sewer systems; manufacturing; building codes; land use (forested, cleared, wetlands, etc); "manure management"; and creates gigantic new government bureaucracies (unionized, of course) to regulate, control, monitor and audit American citizens. It even reaches into your neighborhood and overrides Home Owners Assocation agreements. Most importantly for companies, it specifies "emission allowances" for carbon dioxide. You know, the stuff that plants breathe and we exhale. We start with the most useless government agencies we can find. The Department of Education, the Department of Agriculture, The Department of Health and Human Services, The Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Labor, the Environmental Protection Agency, the FCC and Amtrak. For the sake of argument, lets say that together, they consume $250 billion a year. Congress job? They would be required to cut spending for these ridiculous bureaucracies according to the following schedule (which I had a lot of fun creating -- all numbers in billions).
Pay-cuts? Layoffs? Closing unnecessary facilities? Who gives a crap? Thats for them to figure out. How do you like Cap-and-trade now, Democrats? Missing Moon-Landing Videotapes May Have Been Foundclipped by: wiccantexan Just in time for the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing, NASA may have found the long-lost original Apollo 11 videotapes. If true, as Britains Sunday Express reports, the high-quality tapes may give us a whole new view of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrins lunar strolls. ![]() Back on July 20, 1969, the raw video feed from the moon was beamed to the Parkes Observatory radio telescope in southeastern Australia, and then compressed and sent to Mission Control in Houston. Because of technical issues, NASAs images couldnt be fed directly to the TV networks. Those images survive, and anyone can see them on YouTube. But the original, sharp, black-and-white tapes that were recorded at Parkes vanished. Around the same time, though, a cache of tapes containing data from moon-surface experiments from the entire Apollo program was discovered in a university basement in Perth, Western Australia, on the other side of the country from Parkes. State Draws Zones for Coast Wind Farmsclipped by: David HughesState draws zones for coast wind farmsDozens of wind turbines could sprout within sight of the Massachusetts shoreline under a first-of-its-kind state blueprint with the promise of generating both electricity and controversy. The draft plan, scheduled to be released today, would allow a series of small wind farms of up to 10 turbines each in coastal waters that stretch 3 miles from shore. Substantially larger farms - similar to what?s proposed in Nantucket Sound - could be built off Cape Cod near Cuttyhunk Island and adjacent to another tiny island several miles off Martha?s Vineyard. The plan emerges as the nation?s waters become increasingly crowded from competing uses of ship traffic, fishing, and a flurry of offshore energy projects, from liquefied natural gas ports to wind farms. Two weeks ago, President Obama called such ocean management a priority to help manage federal waters that stretch 3 to 200 miles out to sea.Continued... Medicare For Everyoneclipped by: debbyskiThe goal and slogan of "healthcare reform" should be quite simple: "Medicare for Everyone." Why do we have to wait until we are 65 to be guaranteed the right of health coverage? Who is publicly against Medicare? Just the fringe right wing loonies in the GOP (although a larger number of Republican politicians oppose it as a government entitlement, but wont say so because they would be slaughtered at the polls by outraged seniors who love their Medicare.) Private healthcare insurance only accomplishes two things: increases the costs of healthcare and denies needed care as much as it can get away with. So when politicians keep talking about free market alternatives as being more efficient: the private health insurance industry proves just the opposite. In order to make a profit or pay high non-profit insurance (think Blue Cross) salaries, they have to add costs onto the healthcare system. Its that simple. And they have to deny care as frequently as they can in order to increase profit Say Somethingclipped by: debbyskiclippers remarks: "The more courageous among us say ?Lets try something different. The greatest duty of a free people is to speak out when they see something occuring in their country that they believe is wrong. It is a duty we should be taught from the cradle, and be reminded of until we are in our graves. I think we exclude the opinions of individuals, however personally odious, however contrarian, at great risk to ourselves and our own freedom of speech. Many times these comments seem to be entirely self-serving They are often times angry and filled with ad hominem attacks. Their primary purpose seems to be to ridicule the opinions of those they disagree with, and obscure any real discourse on the subject with an obscuring mud coat of obfuscations, slogans and platitudes. They seem to be far more interested in engaging in tautological (tail chasing in simple terms) arguments that support their own system of beliefs, rather than putting forth arguments that legitimately support their contentions against your own. Numerous studies have shown that lack of sleep hurts?it can lead to weight gain, diseases, and of course weakened cognitive functioning. But a bad night?s sleep doesn?t hurt everyone equally. Unlike me, some people can think clearly no matter what. A study published June 24th in The Journal of Neuroscience helps explain why. Scientists looked for a genetic marker called Period 3 known to predict the effects of sleep deprivation. People with short versions of the gene do okay when they lose sleep. But the longer gene leads to suffering with lack of sleep. Researchers tested attention and cognition before and after both good and bad nights? sleeps. Those with the long Period 3 had poor function in the part of the brain that would usually spring to life. A new analysis of data from dozens of studies sheds new light on how we choose what we do and do not hear. The study found that while people tend to avoid information that contradicts what they already think or believe, certain factors can cause them to seek out, or at least consider, other points of view. We wanted to see exactly across the board to what extent people are willing to seek out the truth versus just stay comfortable with what they know, The studies they reviewed generally asked participants about their views on a given topic and then allowed them to choose whether they wanted to view or read information supporting their own or an opposing point of view. The panel?s 20-17 vote to recommend a ban on the combination drugs was one of 11 it took at a meeting called to advise the F.D.A. on problems arising from the extraordinary popularity of acetaminophen. Understanding does not diminish Aweclipped by: balthazarusclippers remarks: "The religious experience is, at best, a stunted variety of this feeling. Awe without understanding, or at least the desire for understanding, degenerates into mysticism: viewing a mystery not as a challenge to be solved, but something to be worshipped for its own sake. Mysticism states that ignorance is a desirable condition, a state we should glory in. This attitude only keeps us frightened and ignorant, and worst of all, robs us of the deeper and more genuine awe that comes with comprehension. I say, let us explore. There may be problems too high or too deep for us, mysteries we cannot penetrate - but so far, we havent found any, and if there are any, they will not need to be protected from our investigations." Moving Beyond Awe The nineteenth-century German theologian Rudolf Otto, in his book The Idea of the Holy, popularized the term "numinous", an adjective describing the sense of mystery and wonder that purportedly stems from the presence of a deity. According to Otto, the sense of the numinous had two main characteristics: the mysterium tremendum, the sense of fear and trembling that comes from the presence of that which is wholly other, and the mysterium fascinas, the sense of fascination and curiosity that such an experience evokes. Ottos theology concisely sums up the categories of religious experience. But the problem with his conception of the numinous is that it lacks one very important quality - understanding. For Otto, as for many theists, the numinous is not something we should seek to comprehend. there is no mention of penetrating the mystery pulling back the curtain of our ignorance what humanity has been doing throughout its history: piercing the mysteries that surround us THE BIG TAKEOVERclipped by: Antaraclippers remarks: full read @ Rolling Stone ![]() Its over ? were officially, royally fucked. The bad news is that nearly all the costs will get passed on to us anyway. What are those costs? According to the analysis we conducted at The Heritage Foundation, which is attached to my written statement, the higher energy costs kick in as soon as the bills provisions take effect in 2012. For a household of four, energy costs go up $436 that year, and they eventually reach $1,241 in 2035 and average $829 annually over that span. Electricity costs go up 90 percent by 2035, gasoline by 58 percent, and natural gas by 55 percent by 2035. The cumulative higher energy costs for a family of four by then will be nearly $20,000. As with American manufacturers, Waxman-Markey also puts American farmers at a global disadvantage, as other food-exporting nations would have no comparable energy-price raising measures in place. Testimony before the My name is Ben Lieberman, and I am the Senior Policy Analyst for Energy and Environment in the Thomas A. Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies at The Heritage Foundation. It is clear that cap-and-trade is very expensive and amounts to nothing more than an energy tax in disguise. After all, when you sweep aside all the complexities of how cap and trade operates--and make no mistake, this is the most convoluted attempt at economic central planning this nation has ever attempted--the bottom line is that cap and trade works by raising the cost of energy high enough so that individuals and businesses are forced to use less of it. Inflicting economic pain is what this is all about. That is how the ever-tightening emissions targets will be met. The only entities directly regulated by Waxman-Markey would be the electric utilities, oil refiners, natural gas producers, and some manufacturers that produce energy on site. Argentine ants living in vast numbers across Europe, the US and Japan belong to the same interrelated colony, and will refuse to fight one another. The colony may be the largest of its type ever known for any insect species, and could rival humans in the scale of its world domination. In Europe, one vast colony of Argentine ants is thought to stretch for 6,000km (3,700 miles) along the Mediterranean coast, while another in the US, known as the Californian large, extends over 900km (560 miles) along the coast of California. A third huge colony exists on the west coast of Japan. While ants are usually highly territorial, those living within each super-colony are tolerant of one another, even if they live tens or hundreds of kilometres apart. it now appears that billions of Argentine ants around the world all actually belong to one single global mega-colony. clipped by: tabseyclippers remarks: Mutation happening as they breed. The spots and patterns vary. All look the same when squashed. The others can fly away home.

"The rate of spread is dramatic and unprecedented," said Dr Helen Roy of the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.
The ladybird has spread to most parts of the UK in just four years, preying on many other insects.
However, research outlined at the Royal Societys Summer Science Exhibition suggests local ladybird parasites are adapting to prey on the interloper.
To help that process along, scientists are suggesting introducing a mite that renders the ladybirds infertile.
Originally from Asia, the harlequin preys on a wide variety of insects, including the larvae of other ladybirds, and will also eat fruit.
It was introduced in continental Europe to control pest insects.
First "spotted" in Essex in 2004, the invader was quickly classified as a major threat to the UKs 45 native ladybird species.

We need to find better methods and stop letting those with the $$$ tell us that coal is a clean and renewable energy, since it is not. It is like oil, something we are killing the planet earth extracting from the ground and poluuting our air and water.
The Environmental Protection Agency has released a list of 44 ?high hazard potential? coal ash waste dumps across the country. The ?high hazard? rating applied to sites where a dam failure would most likely result in a loss of human life, the environmental agency advisory said, but did not assess the structural integrity of the dam or its likelihood of failure.
The list, released late on Monday, was compiled as part of the agency?s inventory of coal ash sites after more than a billion gallons of ash broke through a dam at the Tennessee Valley Authority?s Kingston Fossil Plant west of Knoxville last December. An engineering analysis of the failure, released last week, cited design problems like the height of the ash, among other factors.
