A Thriving Population of River Dolphins Found

clipped by: Gul Agha
Clip Source: www.nytimes.com
biologists working in Bangladesh have found a thriving population of 6,000 Irrawaddy dolphins, a species restricted to brackish bays and rivers from southern Asia to northern Australia that marine mammal experts had worried was vulnerable to extinction.

a long-term threat to the dolphins from global warming, which climate studies project will raise sea levels and change the river flows as Himalayan glaciers erode

Dolphin and porpoise species that have adapted to rivers and deltas around the world have long been considered some of the most vulnerable of marine mammals because of their restricted habitats. In 2007, experts concluded that the baiji, a river dolphin that thrived in the Yangtze River for 20 million years in what is today China, had been driven extinct

vaquita, a porpoise living in waters where the Colorado River empties into the Gulf of California, is critically endangered, biologists say, depleted by fishing nets and the disruptions in the river?s flow from dam construction

Type A Personalities Have the Edge in Procreating

Type A family

Many evolutionary scientists believe that those thousands of years of human behavior are no artifact: modern men still strive for status partly because it is an evolutionary advantage for improving reproductive success. But other researchers have disputed that theory by citing data showing that wealthier, higher-status men do not in fact have more children than their less moneyed, lower-status peers. (See pictures of Barack Obamas family tree.)

Now a new study in the Journal of Personality offers another theory: it is not necessarily wealth that facilitates procreation but a more basic and deeply ingrained evolutionary trait ? having a Type A personality. The study finds that adolescents who say they always take charge, tell others what to do, anger quickly, get into fights easily, and walk, talk and eat fast end up having more kids than others when they grow up. Thats true regardless of the kids performance in school.

Are successful people primarily the beneficiaries of luck, timing and cultural legacy?

What is the difference between Joe Six-Pack, Joe the Plumber and Joe Biden?

One is vice president; the other two are not

Why? The answer depends on a host of interactive variables that must be factored into any equation of success: genes, parents, siblings, peers, mentors, practice, drive, culture, timing, legacy and luck

The rub for the scientist is determining the percentage of influence of each variable and its interactions, which requires sophisticated statistical models

Journalists unconstrained by research protocols churn out self-help books that focus on select variables that interest them

The Story of Success

The 10 Most Puzzling Ancient Artifacts

The Bible tells us that God created Adam and Eve just a few thousand years ago, by some fundamentalist interpretations. Science informs us that this is mere fiction and that man is a few million years old, and that civilization just tens of thousands of years old. Could it be, however, that conventional science is just as mistaken as the Bible stories? There is a great deal of archeological evidence that the history of life on earth might be far different than what current geological and anthropological texts tell us. Consider these astonishing finds:

The Dropa Stones

The Ica Stones

The Antikythera Mechanism

Dont have a cow, man! The Simpsons will appear on postage stamps.

Americas most enduring (or is that endearing?) dysfunctional family will be honored on their own stamps, the U.S. Postal Service has announced.

Its been 20 years since Homer, Marge and family invaded the airwaves on Fox television, and the Postal Service said it plans five stamps featuring the couple and their offspring, Bart, Lisa and Maggie.

No word on their dog, Santas Little Helper. And it seems that even (or is that evil?) Mr. Burns was not able to pull enough strings to get his own stamp.

Artwork for the 44-cent stamps was done by Simpsons creator Matt Groening and will be available for preview April 9 at the USPS Web site.

At that time the post office plans to announce the date the stamps will go on sale.

100,000 Atheist Britons Seek De-Baptism from Christianity

clipped by: wiccantexan

More than 100,000 Britons have downloaded ?certificates of de-baptism? on the Internet to cut ties with the Christian faith.

Some of these atheists argue that they were baptized when they were too young to make the decision, and now that they?re able to make a choice, they want to renounce their Christian baptism.

?We now produce a certificate on parchment and we have sold 1,500 units at three pounds ($4.35) a pop,? said National Secular Society (NSS) president Terry Sanderson to Agence France-Presse.

NSS? de-baptism initiative follows closely behind the British Humanist Association?s ?There?s probably no God,? bus ads. Dozens of buses across England carried the atheist ad that encouraged people to stop worrying and enjoy their life since there is probably no God.

Britain?s de-baptism movement, meanwhile, has thus far spread to Spain, where a man has gone to court to have his baptism record erased, according to the International Herald Tribune.

The spontaneous protest erupted after a van filming digital footage for the internet giants controversial Street View service was spotted entering Broughton in Buckinghamshire.

The distinctive vehicle ? which had a tripod-mounted camera on its roof ? was forced to turn back after neighbours united to block the road through the picturesque village.

Residents decided to take a stand amid fears that the 360 degree images posted on the street-level mapping service could be used by criminals to scope out potential targets. Privacy campaigners have also claimed that the pictures, which can be seen around the world, may breach data protection laws.

Google Street View launched in 25 British cities last month and its camera vans are now criss-crossing provincial towns and villages to build up a near-complete virtual representation of the country.

Paganism returns to the Holy Land

clipped by: wiccantexan
Clip Source: www.haaretz.com
Like many other soldiers who took part in the Gaza operation, Omer, 20, occasionally took a few moments to pray, but he did not pray to the Lord of Israel. Omer considers himself pagan, and has sworn allegiance to three ancient gods. During combat, he says they appeared before him, giving him strength during the most arduous moments.

Omer is still in the army, and therefore refused to be interviewed for this story. Yet he did say he belongs to a religion whose goal is to revive worship of ancient gods.

The two soldiers are part of a tiny community of pagans that has developed in Israel. Influenced by movements in the United States and Europe, followers believe in multiple gods.

Because the main sources of neo-paganist religions are England and the U.S., some Israeli worshipers pray to Nordic or Celtic gods. Others seek to revive the worship of ancient Canaanite gods who were fought by biblical prophets.

Ruah-Midbar believes paganism has a bright future in Israeli culture.

It should go without saying that a more nationalistic public, especially one that has been raised with the knowledge of modern unprovoked invasions of their country (as Iranians have been), will be even more likely to rally to the government in a time of crisis, because they will not see an attack on their military and scientific installations as an attack focused solely on the government or a specific policy of that government. Instead, they will see it as an attempt to thwart their national ambition and to humiliate them in the eyes of the world, and nationalists tend not to react well to either one.

Human heart can grow new cells, study finds

?Fundamental breakthrough? will likely lead to new treatments

It was long thought that the human heart, like the brain, was unable to grow new cells after birth. But today scientists announced the first evidence that new heart cells are made throughout a persons life.

For instance, the finding could help doctors design treatments for the damage caused by heart attacks, which was previously thought to be irreversible.

The researchers now postulate that the heart does in fact have stem cells, and that these may be harnessed for therapeutic treatments.

A study published in the March 30 issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that in cats, brain cells can be restored after neurological damage by adding more insulation called myelin to neurons.

In the cats, if myelin was restored to cells that had lost it, they were able to regain their lost functions.

"Global Warming" Cooling Off

Man-made global warming advocates are scrambling to explain away the fact that 2008 has so far been the coolest year in five years, as climate change alarmists face embarrassment amidst a barrage of evidence that the planet has embarked on a clear and natural cooling trend.

?The first half of 2008 was the coolest for at least five years, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) said on Wednesday,? reports Reuters, adding that it may actually be the coolest since 2000, but the rest of the article is a strained and bias effort to pin the blame solely on the periodic weather event La Nina.

A dramatic cooling trend is being observed across the planet even as people like Al Gore continue to claim that the threat of global warming mandates the poor and middle class be hit with CO2 taxes in order to prevent climate change.

Both anecdotal evidence and hard data indicates that the planet is in the beginning stages of a significant downturn in global temperatures.

We are deeply concerned with the unprecedented destruction of our Mother Earth and the destruction of indigenous ways of life. Researchers quizzed 571 people aged 17 to 25 about their lives and found those who grew up with sisters were more likely to be happy and balanced.

The findings are due to be presented at the British Psychological Society in Brighton on Thursday.

During the study, participants filled in psychological questionnaires which researchers used to assess a range of issues, including whether they had a positive outlook and any mental health problems.

Lead researcher Professor Tony Cassidy said: "Sisters appear to encourage more open communication and cohesion in families.

"You could send a person home, have them shine a laser on the specific part of the body with cancer for a couple weeks, and they could be cured of cancer," says Professor Jin Zhang of the University of California in Santa Cruz who helped develop the nanoparticles.

To create the gold nanospheres, the scientists started with nanospheres made from cobalt, then replaced the cobalt atoms with gold atoms, using the same process that turns the calcium in dinosaur bones into fossils.

The gold nanospheres are then coated in antibodies that detect, and then latch onto, cancer cells.

"With this new particle we can specifically target the agent for tumour cells, to enhance its therapeutic effects," while minimising the painful side effects of current chemotherapy for cancer patients.

This field extends throughout the Suns equatorial plane in the heliosphere. The shape of the current sheet results from the influence of the Suns rotating magnetic field on the plasma in the interplanetary medium (Solar Wind). A small electrical current flows within the sheet, about 10?10 A/m². The thickness of the current sheet is about 10,000 km.

Thats about the time he opened the box.

Determined to save her ring, he scaled the side of the bridge as motorists, thinking he was suicidal, begged him not to jump. A police suicide-prevention van pulled up.

"I just kept telling them, I need to get that ring. I have to get that ring," Walling told NBC.

The cops stopped traffic, and with help from the family yelling down the rings location from their walkway perch, Walling reclaimed the prize.

Cats Central Nervous System Can Repair Itself

ScienceDaily (Mar. 31, 2009) ? Scientists studying a mysterious neurological affliction in cats have discovered a surprising ability of the central nervous system to repair itself and restore function.

In a study published March 30, 2009 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a team of researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison reports that the restoration in cats of myelin ? a fatty insulator of nerve fibers that degrades in a host of human central nervous system disorders, the most common of which is multiple sclerosis ? can lead to functional recovery.

"The fundamental point of the study is that it proves unequivocally that extensive remyelination can lead to recovery from a severe neurological disorder," says Ian Duncan, the UW-Madison neuroscientist who led the research. "It indicates the profound ability of the central nervous system to repair itself."

It is already known that many non-human primates and monkeys can count, and even domestic dogs have been found to be capable of simple additions.  But this is the first time the ability has been seen in chicks with no prior training.

Scientists from the universities of Padova and Trento have demonstrated chicks? ability to add and subtract objects as they were moved behind two screens. Lucia Regolin, an author of the study, said the animals ?performed basic arithmetic? to work out which screen concealed the larger group of objects.

The findings are reported in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. The birds, she said, were able to ?count? the balls that were moved to work out which screen hid the larger set at the end of the transfer.

?They still chose correctly - adding up the numbers based on groups of objects they couldn?t see at that moment.?

The bill will be brought up again Friday for final approval, then return to the Senate, where changes to language must be approved. Should the Senate OK those changes, the bill will head to Douglas? desk and a promised veto.  That veto ? which Douglas declared last week he would deliver ? would not kill the legislation. Instead members of the House and Senate will try to override the veto by securing a two-thirds majority of support in each chamber. The Senate would need 20 votes; the House would need 100 with all members in attendance."

formula for attractive colours

clipped by: mona
Clip Source: www.creativepro.com
More than half a century ago, Aemelius Müller

was able to predict which combination of colors most people would probably like.

Müllers formula predicts that these color combinations will be considered ugly by most people:

While these will be liked. How is this possible?

First we need to consider the "natural" brightness of the colors of the color circle

every hue in the color circle has its own "natural" brightness.

Take the combination below. All three colors have the exact same hue of blue. The only difference between the colors is their brightness.

Now pair the last combination with the "ugly" combination on the left and the "nice" combination on the right:

Toward the "ugly" (left) side the dark blue shifted to a greener hue, while the bright blue shifted to a more purple hue. This is contrary to the "natural" brightness of the colors

The same goes for the red combinations

So heres the simple formula: If a combination follows the natural brightness of colors, most people will like it

The silence surrounding Sri Lanka

By Arundhati Roy
March 31, 2009

THE HORROR that is unfolding in Sri Lanka becomes possible because of the silence that surrounds it. There is almost no reporting in the international press - or in the mainstream media in India, where I live - about what is happening

every Tamil is a terrorist unless he or she can prove otherwise, and civilian areas, hospitals, and shelters are being bombed and turned into a war zone.

Reliable estimates put the number of civilians trapped at over 200,000.

several "welfare villages" have been established

The Daily Telegraph in London reports that these villages "will be compulsory holding centers for all civilians fleeing the fighting." Is this a euphemism for concentration camps?

"A free media is virtually nonexistent in Sri Lanka today." He described death squads and "white van abductions," which have made society "freeze with fear." Voices of dissent have been abducted and assassinated.

The world must step in. Now.

The Group of 20 (G20) is making a big show of getting together to come to grips with the global economic crisis. But heres the problem with the upcoming summit in London on April 2: Its all show. What the show masks is a very deep worry and fear among the global elite that it really doesnt know the direction in which the world economy is heading and the measures needed to stabilize it.

whether the crisis will lead to a new international economic order.

First of all, since legitimacy is a very scarce commodity at this point, the UN secretary general and the UN General Assembly ? rather than the G20 ? should convoke a special session to design the new global multilateral order. A Commission of Experts on Reforms to the International Monetary and Financial System, set up by the president of the General Assembly and headed by Nobel Prize laureate Joseph Stiglitz, has already done the preparatory policy work for such a meeting.

Are Governments more Trustworthy than Corporations?

clipped by: infidel70
clippers remarks: But while theres no question that corporations are often corrupt, monopolistic and abusive-- so is government. Theres a simple reason for that, guns dont kill people, and corporations dont steal from or abuse people. Only people do. And people will take those human failings with them into the boardroom as much as they will into the halls of government.
To believe that government should control corporations, you would have to assume one of four things.

1. That government is more competent than corporations.

2. That government is more representative than corporations are.

3. That government is more moral, incorruptible and ethical than corporations are.

4. That government is more trustworthy because it lacks a profit motive.

Corporate misbehavior is the product of universal human moral failings, which exist just as much in any other highly organized institution, including government. There is nothing uniquely "evil" about corporations, and nothing uniquely "good" about government. Both are examples of human institutions, which contain plenty of examples of both good and bad behavior.

The big sales pitch for socialism over free enterprise, for the government taking control of corporations, is that its for "the protection of the people."

Identification badge for lovelorn singles

ITS the age-old dilemma in the search for love - how do you know that special someone is single without embarrassing yourself by asking?

Single

Evan Diacopolous is the brainchild behind Yes I Am Single, a service which allows the lovelorn to purchase a ?singles identification badge? to let potential partners know theyre available and looking for love.

The 35-year-old says the badge ? which says yis.com.au on it - is a ?subtle and unobtrusive tool? that will hopefully encourage other singles to make a move.

For a cost of $22.95 singles get the badge plus access to online forums to join hobby groups and organise social events such as wine tasting or walking groups with other yis.com.au members.

"The idea is that people can wear the badge at appropriate times to identify themselves as single. As the mood strikes them, they can take the badge on and off, say for 10 minutes when they go down to the supermarket," he said.

8.2 seconds needed to fall in love

The time needed for a man to fall in love at first sight is 8.2 seconds, scientists claim.

Man looking at woman: 8.2 seconds needed to fall in love

The men looked into the eyes of woman they considered beautiful for an average of 8.2 seconds

The longer a mans gaze rests on a woman when they meet for the first time, the more interested he is.

If it last just four seconds, he may not be all that impressed. But if it breaks the 8.2 second barrier, he could already be in love they say.

However the same is not true for women. They let their eyes linger on men for the same length of time whether they find them attractive or not.

Hidden cameras were used to secretly track the eye movements of 115 students as they spoke to actors and actresses. They were then asked to rate their conversation partners attractiveness.

The female students, however, looked at the actors for the same length of time. The researchers believe that men use eye contact to seek out fit and fertile mates.

The theory seems to go against some of the current paradigm of functional mapping of the brain but I would say that consciousness and, arm movements lets say, are two very different things.
Clip Source: en.wikipedia.org

The holonomic brain theory, originated by psychologist Karl Pribram and initially developed in collaboration with physicist David Bohm, is a model for human cognition that is drastically different from conventionally accepted ideas: Pribram and Bohm posit a model of cognitive function as being guided by a matrix of neurological wave interference patterns situated temporally between holographic Gestalt perception and discrete, affective, quantum vectors derived from reward anticipation potentials.

In particular, the fact that information about an image point is distributed throughout the hologram, such that each piece of the hologram contains some information about the entire image, seemed suggestive to Pribram about how the brain could encode memories. (Pribram, 1987).

The idea, usually traced to the 17th-century philosopher John Locke, grew popular in the Enlightenment, fitting the mood of challenge to the supposedly innate authority of monarchy and aristocracy.

Liberal opinion turned against the concept of a biological human nature, which was increasingly seen as a tool with which male and bourgeois elites could rationalise hegemony.

Marion County deputies arrested 53-year-old Sandra Nardi Sunday after a deputy said he clocked her going 103 on Hylo Road.

Nardi was charged with reckless driving and reckless endangerment.

DMV spokesman David House confirmed that Nardi worked there since 1988, and was also currently on paid administrative leave for matters unrelated to the driving charges.

House said Nardi was on leave since mid-March and scheduled for a personnel review, but did not elaborate on the circumstances.

The posted limit on the hilly stretch is 45 and deputies say several people have died in crashes on the road while speeding.

Nardi told the officer she was showing her 10-year-old grandson how not to drive dangerously, and to never try to drive the way she was.

Introduction

We live in hard times both as Americans and as human beings. Our world is falling apart, largely thanks to the corruption and ambitions of a few individuals who have no desire but to see us enslaved to them through some vague common action and manipulated through a few choice words.

Solution & Conclusion

It is clear now what we must do, we are aware and we are inspired by our righteous indignation. We know what we must do and we must create a new world, as Thomas Paine once said, ?We have it in our power to begin the world over again.? That is what we must do, in our time.

What We Stand For

What we stand for, is not for the group to decide it is for each and every one of us as individuals to decide. We stand and fight for the things we are against. We cannot get rid of them but we can become aware of them. The illusion of being free

Where socialism sought totalitarian control of a society?s economic processes through direct state operation of the means of production, fascism sought that control indirectly, through domination of nominally private owners. Where socialism nationalized property explicitly, fascism did so implicitly, by requiring owners to use their property in the ?national interest??that is, as the autocratic authority conceived it. (Nevertheless, a few industries were operated by the state.) Where socialism abolished all market relations outright, fascism left the appearance of market relations while planning all economic activities. Where socialism abolished money and prices, fascism controlled the monetary system and set all prices and wages politically. In doing all this, fascism denatured the marketplace. Entrepreneurship was abolished. State ministries, rather than consumers, determined what was produced and under what conditions.

clipped by: wiganfootie
Clip Source: www.telegraph.co.uk

Children have been told to use sponge footballs for their evening kickabouts after neighbours complained to police about the noise of their games.

The lightweight balls will replace the standard leather and plastic makes, which local residents claimed were too loud when kicked against walls and cars.

Parents have accused their neighbours in Rainham in Kent of behaving like "killjoys" for interfering with their childrens games, pointing out that leather balls have been used for street football for more than a hundred years.

They claim that the sponge balls ? which tend to float up when kicked with any force ? will prove no substitute for the real thing and will turn their matches into a farce.

Nigel Harris, 37, said: "If this sort of thing happens all over the place I dread to think where the next generation of English footballers are going to come from.

"The kids were all quite understanding about it and have agreed to only play with the leather balls at the park."

He added: ?I think a new world order is emerging with the foundations of a new progressive era of international co-operation.? RIOT cops clashed with hundreds of protesters in Strasbourg yesterday ahead of a NATO summit of world leaders. The police fired rounds of tear gas and rubber bullets to try to disperse the crowds, and arrested around 200 of the demonstrators. I am skeptical of the troop escalation in Afghanistan. I have my doubts about whether that?s what?s needed. But if troop escalations is what?s going to happen, and if it may in fact be the right thing, the real question is, what are they going to be doing? If they?re just going to be taking it to the ?enemy,? I am confident that it will be a failed effort. And I don?t say that with any relish. ? The best course of action, I think, is to have an increase in civilian efforts to improve the lot of the average Afghan, with a clear goal to move things into the Afghans as fast as possible.

I think Predator strikes have not contributed positively. We?ve just heard so many bad things about them. They must really be killing the American image in the mind of the average Afghan. ? I think that you need a human being to go see whether or not the strike is actually targeted at a true hostile enemy, rather than a wedding party ? which has happened all too often.

Court to hear Texas case over Santeria animal sacrifices

clipped by: wiccantexan
Clip Source: www.foxnews.com
A Santeria priest who sued a Texas city for denying him permission to sacrifice a goat as part of a religious ceremony asked a federal appeals court Wednesday to let him resume the ritual in his home.

Jose Merced, 46, accused the city of Euless, Texas, of trampling on his constitutional right to religious exercise, but U.S. District Judge John McBryde sided with the Fort Worth suburb last year and dismissed the Puerto Rico natives claims.

The city says animal sacrifices jeopardize public health and violate its slaughterhouse and animal cruelty ordinances.

Judge Rhesa Barksdale asked city attorney Bradford Bullock how Merceds animal sacrifices differ from a hunter bringing home a deer and butchering it.

Merceds lawyer, Eric Rassbach, said Merced sacrificed animals at his Euless home for 16 years without incident and is willing to "quadruple bag" the remains and dispose of them in a way that doesnt jeopardize the publics health.

More than 300 scientists and other experts who met for four days at the European Space Agency said Thursday that sharing information is a crucial first step in preventing collisions and predicting with more accuracy where derelict satellites may fall to Earth.

"We need to share more data," said Thomas Schildknecht of the Aeronautical Institute of the University of Bern. "We consider this most import and challenging part for the immediate future."

Various international agencies track the refuse in space. The U.S. Strategic Command, which monitors space debris, keeps track of 13,943 orbiting objects 4 inches or larger orbiting the Earth, and there are thousands more piece that that are even smaller.

Heart Muscle Renewed Over Lifetime, Study Finds

In a finding that may open new approaches to treating heart disease, Swedish scientists have succeeded in measuring a highly controversial property of the human heart: the rate at which its muscle cells are renewed during a person?s lifetime.

About 1 percent of the heart muscle cells are replaced every year at age 25, and that rate gradually falls to less than half a percent per year by age 75

Dr. Frisen realized several years ago that nuclear weapons tested in the atmosphere until 1963 had in fact labeled the cells of the entire world?s population.

The nuclear blasts generated a radioactive form of carbon known as carbon-14

In the body, carbon-14 in the diet gets into the DNA of new cells and stays unchanged for the life of the cell. Because the level of carbon-14 in the atmosphere falls each year, the amount of carbon-14 in the DNA can serve to indicate the cell?s birth date

The Russian space agency is expected to unveil development plans for a next-generation manned spacecraft on Monday.

Roscosmos should name the ships prime developer, which has competed to win government funds for the project.

The proposed new spacecraft should enter into service sometime towards the end of the next decade.

It will replace the venerable three-seat Soyuz capsule, which has carried Russian cosmonauts into orbit for more than four decades.

Although Roscosmos has remained tight-lipped about the upcoming presentation, the agency has quietly released its requirements for a future manned transport system to the Russian space industry.

In doing so, the agency has shed some light on the ships likely design and its possible missions.

The spacecraft, currently known only by the Russian abbreviation PPTS, for Prospective Piloted Transport System, would be able to reach low-Earth orbit or to enter orbit around the Moon.

North Koreans have pretty much backed themselves into a corner. While they may have begun the process of threatening to launch a rocket to gain leverage with the United States, it is now an issue of saving face -- and they are certain to go ahead with the launch.

Eureka machine works (it is not April 1st)

clipped by: balthazarus
clippers remarks: The Cornell machine uses a computer program that can search through huge amounts of data and look for underlying patterns. For example, a falling apple will abide by Newtons second law, which is often stated as F=ma, where F is the force acting on an object, m is its mass, and a is its acceleration. When fed information on the mass of the apple and its velocity as it falls, the machine would be able to work out the equation.

Lipson tested the machine by giving it information from basic lab experiments, such as swinging pendulums and tiny cars that moved up and down tracks on a cushion of air. After crunching through the data, the machine pinged and displayed several laws of motion and conservation of momentum.

The system runs its own checks to decide whether the laws it has found are likely to be interesting.

Obamas $163,000 Tax Bomb

The House and Senate are preparing to pass President Barack Obamas radical budget blueprint, with only minor modifications, by using (abusing would be more accurate) the budget "reconciliation" process. This process circumvents the Senates normal rules requiring 60 votes to prevent a filibuster. Reconciliation was created by Congress in the mid-1970s to enforce deficit reduction, the opposite of what the president and his party are aiming for.

The immense increase in nondefense spending and taxes, and the tripling of the national debt in Mr. Obamas budget, have been the subject of considerable scrutiny sinc

What does $6.5 trillion of additional debt imply for the typical family? If spread evenly over all those paying income taxes (which under Mr. Obamas plan would shrink to a little over 50% of the population), every income-tax paying family would get a tax bill for $163,000.

Under this heading, it has discontinued investigations of the likes of Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

The Council president has made a procedural ruling that any commentary connecting the practice of Islam to human-rights violations is out of order.

The Council has sabotaged the key resolution in the U.N. system on freedom of expression. The resolution now requires investigation of ?abuses of the right of freedom of expression? . Most Council members do not permit freedom of expression, much less suffer from the abuse of it.

The Council regularly adopts resolutions on the ?defamation of religions,? an overt attempt by Islamic states to stymie free speech of individuals in the name of protecting ?religion.?

This is a surrender of American values unlike any other. The spectacle of this particular president legitimizing a lethal weapon for the defeat of human rights will haunt him until the end of his term.

The Council has adopted a formal agenda of ten items that governs all its meetings. One agenda item is reserved for condemning Israel.

At the Council, Israel is denied membership in any regional group, including the amalgam of Western states to which the United States belongs.

The Council has had ten regular sessions concerning human rights worldwide and five special sessions to condemn Israel.

The Council has adopted more resolutions and decisions condemning Israel than all the other 191 U.N. member states combined.

The Council has terminated human-rights investigations of such paragons as Belarus, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Liberia.

The Waltons ? the Arkansas-based family that founded Wal-Mart ? are one of the key groups financing the campaign

Man cries after attempt to rob liquor store fails

TRENTON, N.J. ? Police say a 19-year-old who tried to rob a liquor store sat down and cried after 76-year-old owner locked him in the store. The man was accused of trying to rob Sykes Liquor Store in Trenton Monday night. Police said the owner, who was behind the counter, triggered the lock after the man grabbed a bottle of Hennessy cognac and bolted for the door.

The man then allegedly pulled out a handgun and demanded to be released. But the owner said he saw that the gun was a fake, refused to unlock the door and called police.

Police said the suspect threw away the gun, slumped to the floor and was crying when officers arrived to arrest him.

Eyes glued shut ... Paula Griffin

A WOMAN glued her eye shut after she mistook a bottle of nail glue for eyedrops.

Paula Griffin, 29, woke with blurred vision and mistakenly squirted the hazardous substance into her right eye, gluing it shut for eight hours.

Eye specialists at Bournemouth Hospital in Dorset cut off her lashes to prise it open again and warned her she could lose her sight.

The company secretary, from Bournemouth, revealed she was still sleepy when she grabbed the bottle from the bathroom shelf.

?By the time I realised what had happened, it was too late and I couldn?t dodge the liquid completely,? she said.

?I managed to stop it hitting the centre of the eye, and doctors told me later that it saved me from permanent damage.?

She said it was agonising and burning so she shut her eye when her eyelashes became stuck together.

Doctors gave her paraffin to help dissolve the glue and she had to take a week off work.

She has a cut across her eyeball and now wears false eyelashes.

"Its obvious that it was a mutual sign of affection and appreciated between the queen and Michelle Obama," the royal representative said. "There is no offense. The reception was an informal occasion. Theres no breach of protocol."

On the other hand, its comforting to know we arent alone in being astonished by the bizarre, slow-motion train wreck that has been Becks show. Indeed, no one on the "Morning Joe" panel seemed inclined to defend Becks bizarre behavior, except to note that his ratings speak for themselves.

Scarborough tries to ameliorate his derision once he regains control, but the damage was done. Anyone want to wager whether Beck responds?

Method

Just put the stick of butter between two large pieces of wax paper. Using a rolling pin, press down on the butter. Roll it out they way you would roll out a pie crust. When the butter is about 1/8 to 1/4-inch thick, lift off the wax paper and peel away the butter (before it gets too soft to peel).

MILFORD, Conn. - Its no April Fools joke. The baby bunny really does have two noses.

A Connecticut pet shop worker found the nosey bunny in a delivery of 6-week-old dwarf rabbits that arrived at the Milford store last week. Both noses have two nostrils.

The owner of the Purr-Fect Pets shop says hes never seen anything like it in 25 years in the business. He says the bunny eats, drinks and hops around like the rest of the litter.

Beardsley Zoo director Gregg Dancho says the deformity could be the result of too much inbreeding or the parents exposure to pesticides or poisons.

Store workers have begun a naming contest with Cyrano de Bergerac and Deuce among the contenders so far.

Fear often seems to begin with a road.

Tiger rangers

Sumatras tiger rangers track and catch the endangered animals

Driving into tiger territory, all voices in the jeep gradually fell silent.

The only sound was the thick vegetation swishing against the windows as we lurched along the muddy track.

The forest in Jambi province, Sumatra, is the site of Indonesias newest conflict. Tigers are killing people here at the rate of one a week.

As their forests disappear under loggers saws or to make way for plantations, Sumatras endangered tigers are, quite simply, turning to humans for food.

We were on our way to the site of one attack. Soon, the tell-tale signs of illegal loggers appeared out of the forest - piles of wood, neatly stacked in a small clearing. We pulled up, and started down their tracks into the forest.

Anthony Razo, who served 14 years with the Los Angeles Police Department before abruptly resigning Friday, was charged with five felony counts of insurance fraud and arson for allegedly torching his own BMW 745 on Jan. 4 and then filing an insurance claim.

Razo, 49, refused to answer questions when he was reached at his home late last week by The Times. His attorney, Glen Jonas, refused to discuss details of the case, but acknowledged missteps by Razo.

Hot chocolate drink: How eating chocolate can help improve your maths
Mental arithmetic became easier after volunteers had been given large amounts of compounds found in chocolate in a hot cocoa drink

They were also less likely to feel tired or mentally drained, the findings, presented at the British Psychological Society annual conference in Brighton show.

Prof David Kennedy, director of the brain, performance and nutrition research centre at Northumbria University, and a co-author of the study, said that chocolate could be beneficial for mentally challenging tasks.

The findings suggest students who binge on chocolate when revising for exams may gain a real benefit from doing so.

"For things that are difficult to do, mentally demanding things that maybe crop up in your work it could help," Prof Kennedy said.

The flavanols, part of a group of chemicals called polyphenols, work by increasing the flow of blood into the brain.

The findings show that they could do the calculations more quickly and more accurately after they had been given the drink.

As you walk down along the walkway, bathed in a soft blue light from the back-lit stained-glass surrounding you everything sounds strange; you can hear your own breathing as if it was someone else right up against your ear.

It?s called the Mapparium, and this marvelous glass globe in Boston, MA  started with a spinal injury.

It is 3 stories tall and bisected in the middle by a walkway. The stained glass globe is illuminated from the outside, once by hundreds of lamps, today updated to LEDs.

It?s fascinating to view the earth this way for the first time.

It is a world seen accurately if you?re looking at landmass, but a world frozen in time if you?re looking at politics.

Standing at the center, one can hear onesself in full surround sound; it is as disconcerting as it is striking.

Monsantos Dream Bill -- HR 875

Congressional Bill HR 875 was introduced by Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, whose husband Stanley Greenburg works for Monsanto.

The bill is essentially a giant gift package for Monsanto, mandating the criminalization of seed banking, prison terms and confiscatory fines for small farmers and 24 hour GPS tracking of their animals, and of "industrial" standards to independent farms.

The corporations want nothing less than full control of the land, the end of normal animals so they can substitute patented genetically engineered ones, and the end of normal seeds and thus of seed banking by farmers or individuals.

Rosa DeLauro and Stanley Greenburg have a great deal to account for in attempting to force through a mislabeled ?food safety? bill with hidden intent to wipe out farmers and harm everyone.

Court Rules That Dairies Cant Label Milk "Hormone-Free"

one milk container

A federal court in Ohio has ruled that dairies cannot legally label their milk "hormone free" "rBST-free" or otherwise clearly tell consumers that they arent pumping up their cows with synthetic hormones.

Many see the hormone-free label as a proxy for a wider set of issues. Is it right or necessary to speed up the development and boost the milk output of our dairy cows? Doesnt use of hormones go hand-in-hand with use of antibiotics to treat cows sickened by the exertion of round-the-calender milk production? Might there be some health problems associated with synthetic hormones that we just havent identified yet?

onsumers can still choose milk raised without synthetic hormones. Just look for the USDA Organic seal. In order to qualify for the organic label, organic farmers are prohibited from using synthetic growth hormones, genetically engineered organisms (GMOS), antibiotics and toxic, persistent, synthetic pesticides.

They described what they found as undesirable evidence - and said nothing more. The coroner refused to confirm what they had seen.

Mr Hines - a minister - died in 2004 of skin cancer.

His widow, Ruth Hines, told local media: According to the measurements on the casket, and the funeral director, we asked him, Was this suitable for his length? and he said, Yes that will be perfect.

But when an employee of the funeral home - Cave Funeral Services - contacted media police to claim extreme measures were taken, the investigation was launched.

Black Bloc

clipped by: katsteevns
clippers remarks: Tactics of a black bloc can include vandalism, rioting and street fighting, demonstrating without a permit, misleading the authorities, assisting in the escape of perpetrators arrested by the police, administering first aid to persons affected by tear gas in areas where protesters are barred from entering, building barricades, and attacking police.[3] However such blocs are not inherently violent; participants often use peaceful methods of protest as well. Although black blocking is usually connected with some form of direct action, some black blocs also participate in wholly symbolic action, as well as actions that fall entirely within traditional definitions of nonviolent protest. Property destruction carried out by black blocs tends to have symbolic significance: common targets include banks, institutional buildings, outlets for multinational corporations, gasoline stations, video-surveillance cameras, and similarly emblematic forms of private property.
Clip Source: en.wikipedia.org

A black bloc refers to a tactic, developed in the 1980s by anti-nuclear activist autonomists, whereby participants attended protests and marches wearing black clothing, ski masks and motorcycle helmets with padding, steel-toed boots and often carrying their own shields and truncheons.[1] The clothing is used to avoid being identified by authorities, and to theoretically appear as one large mass, promote solidarity, and create a clear revolutionary presence.

Black blocs gained broader media attention outside Europe when a black bloc caused damage to property of GAP, Starbucks, Old Navy, and other retail locations in downtown Seattle during the 1999 anti-WTO demonstrations.[2]

Iowa Supreme Court unanimously backs gay marriage

clipped by: masbury
clippers remarks: A couple of paragraphs from the opinion -
Clip Source: www.good.is
Here are the key paragraphs from the decision

which can be downloaded here:

?We are firmly convinced the exclusion of gay and lesbian people from the institution of civil marriage does not substantially further any important governmental objective.  The legislature has excluded a historically disfavored class of persons from a supremely important civil institution without a constitutionally sufficient justification.  There is no material fact, genuinely in dispute, that can affect this determination.

We have a constitutional duty to ensure equal protection of the law. Faithfulness to that duty requires us to hold Iowa?s marriage statute, Iowa Code section 595.2, violates the Iowa Constitution.  To decide otherwise would be an abdication of our constitutional duty.  If gay and lesbian people must submit to different treatment without an exceedingly persuasive justification, they are deprived of the benefits of the principle of equal protection upon which the rule of law is founded.?

Should Bike riders be taxed?

Should Bike Riders Be Taxed?

So thinks Oregon representative Wayne Krieger, who has proposed a law requiring cyclists to register their bikes at a cost of $54 every two years. In his words: ?Bikes have used the roads in this state forever and have never contributed a penny

I subscribe to the idea that we should tax things we want less of, not more of. I stole that idea from Hendrik Hertzberg?s well-argued New Yorker comment, in which he suggests ?scrapping the payroll tax altogether and replacing the lost revenue with a package of levies on things that, unlike jobs, we want less rather than more of?things like pollution, carbon emissions, oil imports, inefficient use of energy and natural resources, and excessive consumption.? I think the same rules should apply here.

we want fewer cars on the road

This would have the dual effect of discouraging driving and encouraging cycling.

A Hampshire man is one of four British people shortlisted for "the best job in the world" - caretaker of the Great Barrier Reef on Hamilton Island.

Ben Southall

Ben Southall, an adventurer from Petersfield, is one of 50 people hoping to land the £70,000-a-year post looking after the idyllic island in Australia.

The competition was set up by tourism managers in Queensland.

Voting is already under way, with the most popular hopeful getting a wildcard into the final 10.

The other nine finalists will be picked by the competitions board.

Interviews to find a winner are scheduled for 3 May, before the new island caretaker starts a six-month contract on 1 July.

Mr Southall currently has 190 votes, although a Taiwanese contestant is leading the way with 12,300 votes.

The other British contenders are Sarah Louise Lane, from London, Holly Smale, from Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, and Douglas Stidolph, from Guildford, Surrey.

The Inner Beauty - A Cultural Scan

clipped by: Fast T friend
Clip Source: satre.itrnet.com

THE PROJECT
In the summer of 2007, artist and medical student Satre Stuelke started the Radiology Art project. Dedicated to the deeper visualization of various objects that hold unique cultural importance in modern society, this project intends to plant a seed of scientific creativity in the minds of all those inclined to participate.

METHODS
Stuelke acquires the images on an older four-slice CT scanner that is used for research. Most scan parameters include a 120kV tube voltage, 100mA current, 0.625mm slice thickness and interval, 1:1 pitch, 1.25mm beam collimation, and a speed of 1.25mm/rotation. The resulting DICOM images are then processed in Osirix software on a Macintosh iMac computer. Colors are assigned based on the varying densities of materials present throughout the object. Depending on the spread of densities within a particular subject, black or white backgrounds are chosen. Images are further processed in Adobe Photoshop for proper contrast and balance.

Laser bike lanes that travel with you

lightlane copyright Superb Idea: Bike Lane That Travels With You

Though many cities are getting serious about making bike-friendly infrastructure changes, installing bike lanes is a costly porposition with a glacial pace of implementation.
Enter LightLane, a safety concept from the clever designers at Altitude, Inc. The system projects a virtual bike lane (using lasers!) on the ground around the cyclists, providing drivers with a recognizable boundary they can easily avoid. The idea is to allow riders to take safety into their own hands, rather than leaving it to the city. And just in case you need to be convinced about the need for better cycle saftey, watch this video about the stupidest bike lane in America.
