British researchers hope treatment will help repair heart attack damage or broken bones

A groundbreaking medical treatment that could dramatically enhance the bodys ability to repair itself has been developed by a team of British researchers.

The therapy, which makes the body release a flood of stem cells into the bloodstream, is designed to heal serious tissue damage caused by heart attacks and even repair broken bones. It is expected to enter animal trials later this year and if successful will mark a major step towards the ultimate goal of using patients own stem cells to regenerate damaged and diseased organs.

When the body is injured, bone marrow releases stem cells that home in on the damaged area. When they arrive, they start to grow into new tissues, such as heart cells, blood vessels, bone and cartilage.

Little is known about the creature, which is found in the Caribbean, but it is under threat from deforestation, hunting and introduced species.

Study Reveals Why First Impressions Count

Now scientists have studied one reason why this is true. When a person makes a bad first impression, the negative feelings are harder to overcome than a betrayal that occurs after ties are established.

The Australian National University will help build a giant laser to measure supernovas and black holes in deep space.

The ANU will partner with the University of Adelaide and Australian Research Council on the project.

The device will be built in the United States at a cost of $US200 million and will take about seven years.

The laser sends light down tubes 4 kilometre long to detect movement changes in the universe.

Project leader Professor David McClelland says the device will allow them to look at space in a whole new way.

"Our way of sensing the universe, until now, has always been with electromagnetic waves with optical waves, microwaves, radio waves but theyre all electromagnetic in origin," he said.

"The gravitational waves are something totally different, theyre a new form of medium for which we can observe the universe.

"Its a bit like being able to use a sense of hearing for the first time."

Former anti-apartheid activists in South Africa have launched a stinging attack on their leaders over their handling of Zimbabwe.

Bishop Paul Verryn heads the Methodist Church in Johannesburg where he has welcomed thousands of Zimbabwean refugees.

He has been appalled by their stories.

Bishop Verryn was joined in his church by several human rights advocates who have recently returned from Zimbabwe. They were shocked by what they saw.

Kumi Naidoo, a former anti-apartheid activist, says a lack of action by South African leaders has "betrayed an entire generation".

As the conflict in Gaza continues, some commentators claim the Israeli Government is trying to keep the world from seeing what is really happening, by keeping foreign journalists away from the war zone.

The continued ban on foreign journalists comes despite a decision by Israels Supreme Court last week ruling that foreign reporters should be let in to the war-ravaged enclave.

A new precedent has been set in the Bank of Englands 314-year history, following the latest decision from its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).

I know from personal involvement that the devastating invasion of Gaza by Israel could easily have been avoided.

Mads Gilbert, the radical Marxist Norwegian doctor that was the focus of a Fox News report earlier today for being an anti-Israeli Hamas apologist, has been positively identified as one of two doctors caught faking CPR on a Palestinian boy that "died" in video featured today on CNN.

Lawhawk, has more on why the fake CPR is so pathetically obvious to those with actual CPR training.

CNN editors who swallowed the story of the poorly-acted video unquestioningly?no doubt because it fit the anti-Israeli narrative familiar to CNN viewers and critics?have now pulled the video without explanation, correction, or retraction.

It has also been determined that the videographer who filmed his brothers "death" is the general manager of a company that hosts web sites for Hamas.

Dr. Gilbert was allowed into Gaza by the Israelis just 2 days ago to provide medical care. He was involved in faking war crimes less than 48 hours later.
