Revolutionary stem cell therapy boosts bodys ability to heal itself
clipped by: einbarRevolutionary stem cell therapy boosts bodys ability to heal itself

British researchers hope treatment will help repair heart attack damage or broken bones
A groundbreaking medical treatment that could dramatically enhance the bodys ability to repair itself has been developed by a team of British researchers.
The therapy, which makes the body release a flood of stem cells into the bloodstream, is designed to heal serious tissue damage caused by heart attacks and even repair broken bones. It is expected to enter animal trials later this year and if successful will mark a major step towards the ultimate goal of using patients own stem cells to regenerate damaged and diseased organs.
When the body is injured, bone marrow releases stem cells that home in on the damaged area. When they arrive, they start to grow into new tissues, such as heart cells, blood vessels, bone and cartilage.

Venomous mammal caught on camera

Large, and with a long, thin snout, the Hispaniolan solenodon resembles an overgrown shrew; it can inject passing prey with a venom-loaded bite.
Little is known about the creature, which is found in the Caribbean, but it is under threat from deforestation, hunting and introduced species.
Researchers say conservation efforts are now needed.
The mammal was filmed in the summer of 2008 during a month-long expedition to the Dominican Republic - one of only two countries where this nocturnal, insect-eating animal (Solenodon paradoxus) can be found (the other is Haiti).
Dr Richard Young, from Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, said: "My colleagues were excited and thrilled when they found it in the trap.
"But despite a months worth of trapping effort, they only ever caught a single individual."

Now scientists have studied one reason why this is true. When a person makes a bad first impression, the negative feelings are harder to overcome than a betrayal that occurs after ties are established.
For instance, say you have a lunch date with a new business partner or potential boyfriend/girlfriend. If the other person is late or doesnt show up, you are likely to mistrust that person and probably not set up future dates. But if the other person has been on time for lunch in your first few meetings and then shows up late, you will be more likely to give that person the benefit of the doubt, Lount said.

New laser to revolutionise astronomy: ANU

The Australian National University will help build a giant laser to measure supernovas and black holes in deep space.
The ANU will partner with the University of Adelaide and Australian Research Council on the project.
The device will be built in the United States at a cost of $US200 million and will take about seven years.
The laser sends light down tubes 4 kilometre long to detect movement changes in the universe.
Project leader Professor David McClelland says the device will allow them to look at space in a whole new way.
"Our way of sensing the universe, until now, has always been with electromagnetic waves with optical waves, microwaves, radio waves but theyre all electromagnetic in origin," he said.
"The gravitational waves are something totally different, theyre a new form of medium for which we can observe the universe.

Black holes preceded galaxies
clipped by: tabseyclippers remarks: Have to rearrange a folder in the brains filing cabinet after reading this.

Most if not all galaxies, including our own Milky Way, are believed to have massive black holes at their cores.
It was unclear whether black holes came first, helping create galaxies by pulling matter towards them, or whether they arose in already formed galaxies.
"It looks like the black holes came first," said Dr Chris Carilli, from the US National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Socorro, New Mexico, who took part in the study. "The evidence is piling up."
Earlier studies of nearby galaxies had revealed an intriguing link between the masses of black holes and the central "bulges" of stars and gas in galaxies.
Generally, the mass of a black hole was observed to be about 1,000th that of the mass of the surrounding galactic bulge.

Obama plans to Double Spending on Renewable Energy
clipped by: Naomi-Kclippers remarks: While clean energy is obviously good for the environment, this plan has benefits that are even more immediate. Simply put: clean energy jobs are hard to outsource. Therefore benefits of increasing spending on clean energy are twofold. Firstly, Obama hopes to create jobs that keep Americans employed. Secondly, clean energy decreases reliance on imported oil, coal and gas. Another point is that by becoming a leader in clean technology, America has skills that other countries will have a need for. Germany among other solar energy leaders as already found their technologies are very exportable
This could also increase tech jobs in the area of clean energy, according to Obama. "We will put Americans to work in new jobs that pay well and cant be outsourced " jobs building solar panels and wind turbines; constructing fuel-efficient cars and buildings; and developing the new energy technologies that will lead to even more jobs, more savings and a cleaner, safer planet in the bargain," he said.
Artificial molecule evolves in the lab
clipped by: Mohirclippers remarks: efforts to create more life in the labs will eventually hit a philosophical wall, not a technical one.
A new molecule that performs the essential function of life - self-replication - could shed light on the origin of all living things.
If that wasnt enough, the laboratory-born ribonucleic acid (RNA) strand evolves in a test tube to double itself ever more swiftly.
"Obviously what were trying to do is make a biology," says Gerald Joyce, a biochemist at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. He hopes to imbue his teams molecule with all the fundamental properties of life: self-replication, evolution, and function.
Joyce and colleague Tracey Lincoln made their chemical out of RNA because most researchers think early life stored information in this sister molecule to DNA. And unlike the stuff of our genomes, RNA molecules can catalyse chemical reactions.
"Were trying to jump in at the last signpost we have back there in the early history of life," Joyce says.

UK Interest Rates Hit 314 Year Low
clipped by: socialexpertA new precedent has been set in the Bank of Englands 314-year history, following the latest decision from its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).

The MPC has set the Banks base rate to 1.5 percent, the lowest it has ever been. The rate - which had previously been at two percent - has been cut sharply since October as the Bank attempts to improve economic conditions by encouraging lending from high street mortgage and loans firms.
If banks and other lenders pass on the cuts to their customers, then it is cheaper for consumers to get mortgage loans. Additionally, people who already have variable rate loans might pay less interest, meaning they will have more money in their pocket to spend in the economy.

The article is worth reading in its entirety for those who want an impartial view of the context of how the conflict started based upon best information available, and outside of the two parties involved. He says that there were 3 Israeli deaths in 7 years from Hamas rockets in Gaza. Carter summarizes the present status of conflict: After 12 days of "combat," the Israeli Defense Forces reported that more than 1,000 targets were shelled or bombed. During that time, Israel rejected international efforts to obtain a cease-fire, with full support from Washington . Seventeen mosques, the American International School, many private homes and much of the basic infrastructure of the small but heavily populated area have been destroyed. This includes the systems that provide water, electricity and sanitation. Heavy civilian casualties are being reported[/quote

Anti-Israel Doctor Fakes CPR On Palestinian Boy For Hamas Videographer
clipped by: merrieclippers remarks: The segment with Gilbert shows him and another doctor badly faking chest compressions and other life-saving measures on a live boy faking death in what can only be described as political theater. The video claims to be filmed by the brother of a Palestinian teen that claims the boy was one of two purposefully killed by a missile fired at them by an Israeli drone as they played.
Mads Gilbert, the radical Marxist Norwegian doctor that was the focus of a Fox News report earlier today for being an anti-Israeli Hamas apologist, has been positively identified as one of two doctors caught faking CPR on a Palestinian boy that "died" in video featured today on CNN.
Lawhawk, has more on why the fake CPR is so pathetically obvious to those with actual CPR training.
CNN editors who swallowed the story of the poorly-acted video unquestioningly?no doubt because it fit the anti-Israeli narrative familiar to CNN viewers and critics?have now pulled the video without explanation, correction, or retraction.
It has also been determined that the videographer who filmed his brothers "death" is the general manager of a company that hosts web sites for Hamas.
Dr. Gilbert was allowed into Gaza by the Israelis just 2 days ago to provide medical care. He was involved in faking war crimes less than 48 hours later.

He said Hamas militants next to his apartment building had fired mortar and rocket rounds. Israel fired back with force, and his apartment was hit. His wife, Albina, originally from Ukraine, and his 1-year-old son were killed.
?My son has been turned into pieces,? he cried. ?My wife was cut in half. I had to leave her body at home.? Because Albina was a foreigner, she could have left Gaza with her children. But, Dr. Jaru lamented, she would not leave him behind.
?Don?t you see that these people are hurting?? the militant was asked.
?But I am from the people, too,? he said, his smile incandescent. ?They lost their loved ones as martyrs. They should be happy. I want to be a martyr, too.?

Protests over BART shooting turn violent
clipped by: spirithikerclippers remarks: The transit police officer who committed this atrocity in front of witnesses quit the force and now they are claiming he has no obligation to answer to his actions? A person is dead and the person who took his life does not have to answer for it? This is wrong and he needs to stand before a judge and answer to his accusers. How can there be justification for shop owners to lose their business or innocent individuals to lose their vehicles because a persons life was wrongly taken by police? This mob mentality that instigates the random attacks of innocent individuals is criminal. A civilized society needs to punish the wrongdoers not the innocent. This mob became as guilty as the system they are protesting. There is a 10 minute video covering the riot and video by witnesses of the actual shooting.

Mystery Of The Tree Covered In Shoes...
clipped by: wiccantexanWhy is this ash tree always festooned with footwear?
For almost 40 years, no one has been able to muddle out why people keep hanging shoes from the branches.

Some say that the culprits are preparing for an alien invasion - perhaps thinking the visitors might have packed too light.
Others believe that they are participating in a fertility ritual, hoping to double the number of pregnancies in the local towns and villages.
What is certain is that no one has admitted tying almost 100 boots, sneakers and high heels to the branches, ensuring that the mystery remains unsolved.

The ash growing by the side of the A 40 between High Wycombe and Stokenchurch in Buckinghamshire is the third tree to carry the shoes.
As the previous tree died or was culled, the shoes were moved on to a new ash.

Orange drinks with 300 times more pesticide than tap water
clipped by: JackieDelFizzy drinks sold by Coca-Cola in Britain have been found to contain pesticides at up to 300 times the level allowed in tap or bottled water.

The chemicals detected included carbendazim, thiabendazole, imazalil, prochloraz, malathion and iprodione. They are mainly applied to fruit after harvest to stop it developing fungal infections and rotting.
The experts said the levels found were low under the maximum residue levels allowed for fruit, but they were very high and up to 300 times the figure permitted for bottled or tap water.
The researchers tested 102 cans and bottles of soft drinks, bought from 15 countries, for the presence of 100 pesticides. The UK products were bought in London, Cambridge, Edinburgh, St Andrews and at Gatwick Airport.
A worldwide study found pesticide levels in orange and lemon drinks sold under the Fanta brand, which is popular with children, were at their highest in the UK.
A total of 19 products were bought in the UK, all made by Coca-Cola.

Smoking During Pregnancy Fosters Aggression In Children
clipped by: tabseyclippers remarks: Not sure about this one. The headline blames smoking but most of the factors are the result of an unequal society. Best to just say that the calmer the mum, the calmer the babe.
ScienceDaily (Jan. 9, 2009) ? Women who smoke during pregnancy risk delivering aggressive kids according to a new Canada-Netherlands study published in the journal Development and Psychopathology. While previous studies have shown that smoking during gestation causes low birth weight, this research shows mothers who light up during pregnancy can predispose their offspring to an additional risk: violent behaviour.
Whats more, the research team found the risk of giving birth to aggressive children increases among smoking mothers whose familial income is lower than $40,000 per year. Another risk factor for aggressive behaviour in offspring was smoking mothers with a history of antisocial behaviour: run-ins with the law, high school drop-outs and illegal drug use.

Pirates, not what you might think. . .
clipped by: Twilyght Zoneclippers remarks: good article, well worth the read.
Pirates have never been quite who we think they are. In the "golden age of piracy" - from 1650 to 1730 - the idea of the pirate as the senseless, savage thief that lingers today was created by the British government in a great propaganda-heave. Many ordinary people believed it was false: pirates were often rescued from the gallows by supportive crowds. Why? What did they see that we cant? In his book Villains of All nations, the historian Marcus Rediker pores through the evidence to find out. If you became a merchant or navy sailor then - plucked from the docks of Londons East End, young and hungry - you ended up in a floating wooden Hell. You worked all hours on a cramped, half-starved ship, and if you slacked off for a second, the all-powerful captain would whip you with the Cat O Nine Tails. If you slacked consistently, you could be thrown overboard. And at the end of months or years of this, you were often cheated of your wages.

"Is this the Beast of Exmoor?"

It was the teeth that everyone noticed first.
Great fangs jutted from its huge jaw, gleaming in the afternoon sun.
Then there was the carcass. Up to 5ft long, powerful chest, and what could be the remains of a tail.

Had it been washed up on any other shore, it might simply have been dismissed as the unfortunate remains of a large dog.
But this was North Devon. And folk in these parts have learned that sightings of mystery animals are likely to mean only one thing - the Beast of Exmoor is back.
The puma-like creature has allegedly roamed the countryside here since some fleeting glimpses in the 1970s.
In 1983, it came to national attention after 100 sheep were mauled and killed. Blurred photographs and a succession of intriguing sightings followed.
At one stage the legend rivalled that of the Loch Ness Monster, striking terror into the hearts of farmers and tourists, and filling small children with dread.

Mystery roar detected from far, far, away
clipped by: cakebellyclippers remarks: continues: There is "something new and interesting going on in the universe," said Alan Kogut of NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. A team led by Kogut detected the signal with a balloon-borne instrument named ARCADE (Absolute Radiometer for Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Diffuse Emission). In July 2006, the instrument was launched from NASAs Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Palestine, Texas, and reached an altitude of about 120,000 feet (36,500 meters), where the atmosphere thins into the vacuum of space. ARCADEs mission was to search the sky for faint signs of heat from the first generation of stars, but instead they heard a roar from the distant reaches of the universe. "The universe really threw us a curve," Kogut said. "Instead of the faint signal we hoped to find, here was this booming noise six times louder than anyone had predicted."
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Space is typically thought of as a very quiet place. But one team of astronomers has found a strange cosmic noise that booms six times louder than expected.
The roar is from the distant cosmos. Nobody knows what causes it.
Of course, sound waves cant travel in a vacuum (which is what most of space is), or at least they cant very efficiently. But radio waves can.
Radio waves are not sound waves, but they are still electromagnetic waves, situated on the low-frequency end of the light spectrum.
Many objects in the universe, including stars and quasars, emit radio waves. Even our home galaxy, the Milky Way, emits a static hiss (first detected in 1931 by physicist Karl Jansky). Other galaxies also send out a background radio hiss.
But the newly detected signal, described here today at the 213th meeting of the American Astronomical Society, is far louder than astronomers expected.

(Astigna.com) ? How did the sister of Machiavelli?s prince get so wealthy during an economic downturn?
In popular legend, Lucrezia Borgia, Duchess of Ferrara (1480- 1519), stands falsely accused of poisoning her second husband. Victor Hugo portrayed her in thinly veiled fiction as a tragic femme fatale. Buffalo Bill named his gun after her.
But new research by USC historian Diane Yvonne Ghirardo reveals that the only sister of Machiavelli?s Prince was less interested in political intrigue than in running a business, undertaking massive land development projects that ?stand alone in the panorama of early sixteenth-century projects, not only those initiated by women,? Ghirardo says.
Forced by an economic downturn to cut expenses and become an entrepreneur, the illegitimate daughter of Pope Alexander VI would control between 30,000 and 50,000 acres in northern Italy within six years.

The rodents are believed to have gnawed their way through cables, sparking the blaze at the property belonging to former MP Lord Mayhew on Wednesday afternoon.
Firefighters battled the flames for almost two hours at the two-storey cottage in Goudhurst, near Cranbrook, Kent, currently inhabited by tenants.
Lord Mayhew told the Kent Messenger: "The fire broke out in a void behind an airing cupboard and the most probable cause was squirrels chewing through cables."
A spokeswoman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service estimated about 90% of the first floor and roof void had been "severely damaged".
"The rest of the property was damaged by smoke and heat," she said.
But Lord Mayhew said he was confident restoration of the 1890s property is possible.
No one was injured in the blaze.
The spokeswoman added that the cause of the fire was as yet unknown but squirrels chewing wires, and the wires igniting, "does sometimes happen".

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGYEvolution Exposed: Deconstructing False Science
Some in the scientific community question the theory of evolution; others believe it is fact. What is the truth behind the evidence?
This series investigates the theory of evolution, revealing that there is much more to the story than what is commonly taught. After laying a truthful foundation and building upon it, the reader will see that the theory collapses, and that the confusing series of explanations, definitions and suppositions supporting it are weak and shallow. Each part builds upon the previous, and the entire series should be read to grasp the fullest picture?and the vital implications that flow from its conclusions.
Why is evolution cemented in the minds of many as fact, when it is nothing more than theory?
How did this occur?

Brief Description

Cordobas period of greatest glory began in the 8th century after the Moorish conquest, when some 300 mosques and innumerable palaces and public buildings were built to rival the splendours of Constantinople, Damascus and Baghdad. In the 13th century, under Ferdinand III, the Saint, Cordobas Great Mosque was turned into a cathedral and new defensive structures, particularly the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos and the Torre Fortaleza de la Calahorra, were erected.

The crowd cheers as the announcer reveals hes fine, just before the chute opens with another cowboy atop a menacing bull.
But this isnt a typical rodeo. Its an outreach ministry of the Cowboy Church of Ellis County, which has grown from about 300 to 2,200 members since it began nearly nine years ago. The church about 30 miles south of Dallas now bills itself as the worlds largest cowboy church.
Churchgoers wear cowboy hats and jeans, sing hymns accompanied by a country band and get baptized in horse troughs. Churches vary. Some have Western-theme sanctuaries; others meet in barns or on rodeo grounds, some on weeknights.

Red Cross finds starving children with 12 corpses in Gaza house of horrors

The ICRC said that it had spent four days seeking Israeli guarantees of safe passage so that it could gain access to the houses in the badly damaged Zaytun neighbourhood of the city. It was finally allowed to send in a rescue team and four Palestine Red Crescent Society ambulances yesterday afternoon and said today that what they found was shocking.
In one house they discovered four small children, alive but too weak to stand, next to the bodies of their dead mothers. In all their were 12 dead bodies lying on mattresses.
In another house they found 15 survivors of the Israeli bombardment, several of them wounded, and in a third, three corpses. At that point they were ordered to leave by Israeli soldiers manning a post some 80 metres away, but they refused to do so.

New national parks rule allowing loaded guns challenged by lawsuit

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? The National Parks Conservation Association and the Coalition of National Park Service Retirees filed suit this week in U.S. District Court to stop enforcement of a new regulation allowing loaded, concealed firearms in national parks, including the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
The Bush administration in December finalized a National Rifle Association-driven rule change to allow loaded, concealed firearms in all national parks except those located in two states: Wisconsin and Illinois.
The former rule, put in place by the Reagan Administration, required that firearms transported through national parks be safely stowed and unloaded.
In addition, the Brady Campaign also filed a complaint in federal court asking the court to strike down the the rule.
Survival of the Weak and Scrawny
clipped by: JohnWaterman
Newsweek had a really fascinating article this week about how hunting practices are leading to a kind of ?evolution in reverse? as hunters kill off the ?best? animals (whether elk, or elephants, or mountain goats, or whatever) and leave the weak and scrawny ones to propagate themselves. Of course, the article acknowledges that it?s not really ?reverse? evolution, it?s just a shifting definition of ?fittest?. When you add humans into the mix as a predator, suddenly large tusks or a big rack of antlers is no longer a survival trait, but becomes a detriment. Thus, the article reports, most elephants in Asia and Africa no longer have tusks, and mountain goat?s horns are getting smaller and smaller.

Great Mosque of Córdoba Now Used as Cathedral
clipped by: brightlight4clippers remarks: See text and images.
After conquering Cordoba in 1236, Ferdinand III king of Castile consecrated the Great Mosque as the citys cathedral. The Christian population of Cordoba used the former mosque with relatively minor changes for the next three hundred years. In the early 16th century the Bishop and Canons of the cathedral proposed the construction of a new cathedral, and proposed to demolish the mosque in order to build it. The opposition of the townspeople to the proposed destruction of the building led to the unprecedented decision, endorsed by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, to insert an entire Gothic "chapel" into the very heart of the former Great Mosque. The result is an uneasy and controversial juxtaposition: the soaring forms of a Gothic cathedral rise from the very centre of the comparatively low, sprawling prayer hall whose architectural vocabulary is rooted in the forms of classical antiquity.

Youve got to find what you love, Jobs says

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven dont want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Lifes change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.
Your time is limited, so dont waste it living someone elses life. Dont be trapped by dogma ? which is living with the results of other peoples thinking. Dont let the noise of others opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

Ten Israelis have been killed, three of them Israeli soldiers killed by friendly fire. Beyond the deaths and injuries, the people of Gaza are suffering a dire humanitarian crisis that is dismissed by the Israeli government. There is, however, Israeli opposition to the military assault. Israeli professor Neve Gordon is chair of the department of politics and government at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in southern Israel, the region most impacted by the Hamas rockets. Speaking over the phone from Beersheba, Gordon said: ?We just had a rocket about an hour ago not far from our house. My two children have been sleeping in a bomb shelter for the past week. And yet, I think what Israel is doing is outrageous. ... The problem is that most Israelis say Israel left the Gaza Strip three years ago and Hamas is still shooting rocket
Israeli Voices for Peace
Gordon attended a large peace march last weekend in Tel Aviv with more than 10,000 other Israelis. Longtime Israeli peace activist Uri Avnery was there. He called the invasion ?a criminal war, because, on top of everything else it is openly and shamelessly part of Ehud Barak?s and Tzipi Livni?s election campaign. I accuse Ehud Barak of exploiting the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] soldiers in order to get more Knesset seats. I accuse Tzipi Livni of advocating mutual slaughter in order to become prime minister.? Israel?s elections will be in February.
?I?m speaking ... not as anyone?s nephew but ... as an Israeli, trying to speak out to Americans to tell them you don?t have to support Israel blindly. Not everything that Israel does is holy ... sometimes you have to speak firmly to Israel and tell us, tell our government, stop doing this.?

Why they hate us
clipped by: masburyclippers remarks: Yes, Israelis deserve security.
Yes, Israelis deserve security. Twenty Israelis dead in 10 years around Gaza is a grim figure indeed. But 600 Palestinians dead in just over a week, thousands over the years since 1948?when the Israeli massacre at Deir Yassin helped to kick-start the flight of Palestinians from that part of Palestine that was to become Israel? is on a quite different scale. This recalls not a normal Middle East bloodletting but an atrocity on the level of the Balkan wars of the 1990s. And of course, when an Arab bestirs himself with unrestrained fury and takes out his incendiary, blind anger on the West, we will say it has nothing to do with us. Why do they hate us, we will ask? But let us not say we do not know the answer.

that for millennia the crystals thrived in the caves extremely rare and stable natural environment. Temperatures hovered consistently around a steamy 136 degrees Fahrenheit (58 degrees Celsius), and the cave was filled with mineral-rich water that drove the crystals growth.
Modern-day mining operations exposed the natural wonder by pumping water out of the 30-by-90-foot (10-by-30-meter) cave, which was found in 2000 near the town of Delicias (Chihuahua state map). Now García-Ruiz is advising the mining company to preserve the caves.

Gorilla farts so bad zoo forced to apologize

Gorillas at Chessington Zoo are in the mist of a stench caused by brussell sprouts. The Zoo in London was forced to issue an apology to guests after giving the gorillas a Christmas treat of Brussels sprouts. The brussell sprouts are very nutritious, but the stench caused by the gorilla farts caused horror amongst the men and women with reports of nausea and small children crying.
Gorilla keeper Michael Rozzi said:
?We feed the gorillas brussel sprouts during the winter because they are packed with vitamin C and have great nutritional benefits.
?Unfortunately, an embarrassing side effect is that it can cause bouts of flatulence in humans and animals alike.
?However, I don?t think any of us were prepared for a smell that strong.?
Reports that the Gorillas were asking people to pull their finger have not been verified.
Rise in justified shootings continues
clipped by: katsteevnsRise in justified shootings continues
One week into the new year, San Antonio residents and police have already used deadly force to protect themselves or their homes in three incidents, resulting in two people dead and two injured.
The shootings follow a year in which residents and police killed more than twice as many people as the previous year in what officials have deemed justified homicides, in which the shooter acted within the law.
A fatal shooting of two suspected home invaders Tuesday night marked the latest example of a resident using deadly force to fend off intruders, authorities said.
Various law enforcement agencies across the country also have reported an increase in justified homicides. George R. Franks Jr., a criminal justice professor at Stephen F. Austin State University, said publicity of high-profile justified shootings has inspired others to take up arms.
