2009 Solar Energy Prices set to Fall

clipped by:Naomi-K
clippers remarks: Solar Energy is really coming into its own as a competitive market. This gives many benefits to consumers: namely lower prices and wider availability.

The cost of photovoltaic electricity is due to plummet in 2009, according to a new analysis by New Energy Finance. Its latest "Silicon and Wafer Price Index" shows average silicon contract prices falling by more than 30% in 2009, compared with 2008.

"We are about to see the convergence of two powerful forces in solar photovoltaics: the price premium accruing to silicon refining is about to unwind, at the same time as thin-film manufacturing is really starting to get to scale."

-- Michael Liebreich, Chairman and CEO, New Energy Finance

This may pressure crystalline silicon module manufacturers to reduce their selling prices by more than the reduction in costs in order to retain their edge in the market and the company suggests that current silicon-based solar module prices of US $4/watt could drop to US $2.60/watt by the end of 2009.

The spookfish has a pair of mirrors (black) to focus light from below into its eyes

A Pacific fish uses mirrors as well as lenses to help it see in the murky ocean depths, scientists have revealed.

The brownsnout spookfish has been known for 120 years, but no live specimen had ever been captured.

Last year, one was caught off Tonga, by scientists from Tuebingen University, Germany.

Tests confirmed the fish is the first vertebrate known to have developed mirrors to focus light into its eyes, the team reports in Current Biology.

"In nearly 500 million years of vertebrate evolution, and many thousands of vertebrate species living and dead, this is the only one known to have solved the fundamental optical problem faced by all eyes - how to make an image - using a mirror," said Professor Julian Partridge, of Bristol University, who conducted the tests.

A rare live brownsnout spookfish, Dolichopteryx longipes, was caught last year between New Zealand and Samoa

Mystery Of The Tree Covered In Shoes...

clipped by:wiccantexan
Clip Source: www.dailymail.co.uk
It is a mystery to baffle the brightest gumshoe.

Why is this ash tree always festooned with footwear?

For almost 40 years, no one has been able to muddle out why people keep hanging shoes from the branches.

The ash tree has been decorated with shoes since the 1970s

Some say that the culprits are preparing for an alien invasion - perhaps thinking the visitors might have packed too light.

Others believe that they are participating in a fertility ritual, hoping to double the number of pregnancies in the local towns and villages.

What is certain is that no one has admitted tying almost 100 boots, sneakers and high heels to the branches, ensuring that the mystery remains unsolved.

No one knows where or why the shoes appear in the tree - despite £265,000 of National Lottery money being granted to the cause

The ash growing by the side of the A 40 between High Wycombe and Stokenchurch in Buckinghamshire is the third tree to carry the shoes.

As the previous tree died or was culled, the shoes were moved on to a new ash.

the Special Trees and Woods project, part of a campaign to protect woods in the Chiltern area, added it to a list of 500 special trees.

University College London said the mother and her little girl were doing ?very well?.

Announcing her birth, Paul Serhal, medical director of the Assisted Conception Unit at the hospital, said: ?This little girl will not face the spectre of developing this genetic form of breast cancer or ovarian cancer in her adult life.

?The parents will have been spared the risk of inflicting this disease on their daughter.

?The lasting legacy is the eradication of the transmission of this form of cancer that has blighted these families for generations.?

In June the mother, then 27, told how she decided to undergo the screening process after seeing all her husband?s female relatives suffer the disease.

Paul Watson, captain of the Steve Irwin, speaking by satellite phone from the ship on Tuesday, said he and his crew had been ?nonviolently harassing? a Japanese whaling fleet in the Southern Ocean. But in another day or two, he said, they would have to head for refueling in Australia, where he did not expect to be turned away.

But a Japanese Foreign Ministry official said Tokyo would ?request a port closure? against the Steve Irwin.

The researchers tested 102 cans and bottles of soft drinks, bought from 15 countries, for the presence of 100 pesticides. The UK products were bought in London, Cambridge, Edinburgh, St Andrews and at Gatwick Airport.

"For the first time these arms are mapped over the entire Milky Way," said Iowa State Universitys Martin Pohl, an associate professor of physics and astronomy. "The branching of two of the arms may explain why previous studies -- using mainly the inner or mainly the outer galaxy -- have found conflicting numbers of spiral arms."

Pirates, not what you might think. . .

clipped by:Twilyght Zone
clippers remarks: good article, well worth the read.

Pirates have never been quite who we think they are. In the "golden age of piracy" - from 1650 to 1730 - the idea of the pirate as the senseless, savage thief that lingers today was created by the British government in a great propaganda-heave. Many ordinary people believed it was false: pirates were often rescued from the gallows by supportive crowds. Why? What did they see that we cant? In his book Villains of All nations, the historian Marcus Rediker pores through the evidence to find out. If you became a merchant or navy sailor then - plucked from the docks of Londons East End, young and hungry - you ended up in a floating wooden Hell. You worked all hours on a cramped, half-starved ship, and if you slacked off for a second, the all-powerful captain would whip you with the Cat O Nine Tails. If you slacked consistently, you could be thrown overboard. And at the end of months or years of this, you were often cheated of your wages.

It was the teeth that everyone noticed first.

Great fangs jutted from its huge jaw, gleaming in the afternoon sun.

Then there was the carcass. Up to 5ft long, powerful chest, and what could be the remains of a tail.

Beast of Exmoor.

Had it been washed up on any other shore, it might simply have been dismissed as the unfortunate remains of a large dog.

But this was North Devon. And folk in these parts have learned that sightings of mystery animals are likely to mean only one thing  -  the Beast of Exmoor is back.

The puma-like creature has allegedly roamed the countryside here since some fleeting glimpses in the 1970s.

In 1983, it came to national attention after 100 sheep were mauled and killed. Blurred photographs and a succession of intriguing sightings followed.

At one stage the legend rivalled that of the Loch Ness Monster, striking terror into the hearts of farmers and tourists, and filling small children with dread.

Israel is pushing ahead with its offensive in the Gaza Strip after branding a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire "unworkable".

Dozens of Palestinians were killed on Friday as Israeli warplanes pounded areas across the Gaza Strip and tanks shelled Jabaliya and Beit Lahiya, medical sources said.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (Unrwa) has been forced to suspend humanitarian activities in the Strip after coming under fire from Israeli forces.

The UN also said on Friday that 30 Palestinians were killed in Gaza on January 4 after the Israeli army moved dozens of civilians to a building which troops later shelled.

Mystery roar detected from far, far, away

clipped by:cakebelly
clippers remarks: continues: There is "something new and interesting going on in the universe," said Alan Kogut of NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. A team led by Kogut detected the signal with a balloon-borne instrument named ARCADE (Absolute Radiometer for Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Diffuse Emission). In July 2006, the instrument was launched from NASAs Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Palestine, Texas, and reached an altitude of about 120,000 feet (36,500 meters), where the atmosphere thins into the vacuum of space. ARCADEs mission was to search the sky for faint signs of heat from the first generation of stars, but instead they heard a roar from the distant reaches of the universe. "The universe really threw us a curve," Kogut said. "Instead of the faint signal we hoped to find, here was this booming noise six times louder than anyone had predicted."
Clip Source: www.space.com

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Space is typically thought of as a very quiet place. But one team of astronomers has found a strange cosmic noise that booms six times louder than expected.

The roar is from the distant cosmos. Nobody knows what causes it.

Of course, sound waves cant travel in a vacuum (which is what most of space is), or at least they  cant very efficiently. But radio waves can.

Radio waves are not sound waves, but they are still electromagnetic waves, situated on the low-frequency end of the light spectrum.

Many objects in the universe, including stars and quasars, emit radio waves. Even our home galaxy, the Milky Way, emits a static hiss (first detected in 1931 by physicist Karl Jansky). Other galaxies also send out a background radio hiss.

But the newly detected signal, described here today at the 213th meeting of the American Astronomical Society, is far louder than astronomers expected.

(Astigna.com) ? How did the sister of Machiavelli?s prince get so wealthy during an economic downturn?

In popular legend, Lucrezia Borgia, Duchess of Ferrara (1480- 1519), stands falsely accused of poisoning her second husband. Victor Hugo portrayed her in thinly veiled fiction as a tragic femme fatale. Buffalo Bill named his gun after her.

But new research by USC historian Diane Yvonne Ghirardo reveals that the only sister of Machiavelli?s Prince was less interested in political intrigue than in running a business, undertaking massive land development projects that ?stand alone in the panorama of early sixteenth-century projects, not only those initiated by women,? Ghirardo says.

Forced by an economic downturn to cut expenses and become an entrepreneur, the illegitimate daughter of Pope Alexander VI would control between 30,000 and 50,000 acres in northern Italy within six years.

The rodents are believed to have gnawed their way through cables, sparking the blaze at the property belonging to former MP Lord Mayhew on Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters battled the flames for almost two hours at the two-storey cottage in Goudhurst, near Cranbrook, Kent, currently inhabited by tenants.

Lord Mayhew told the Kent Messenger: "The fire broke out in a void behind an airing cupboard and the most probable cause was squirrels chewing through cables."

A spokeswoman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service estimated about 90% of the first floor and roof void had been "severely damaged".

"The rest of the property was damaged by smoke and heat," she said.

But Lord Mayhew said he was confident restoration of the 1890s property is possible.

No one was injured in the blaze.

The spokeswoman added that the cause of the fire was as yet unknown but squirrels chewing wires, and the wires igniting, "does sometimes happen".

Some in the scientific community question the theory of evolution; others believe it is fact. What is the truth behind the evidence?

This series investigates the theory of evolution, revealing that there is much more to the story than what is commonly taught. After laying a truthful foundation and building upon it, the reader will see that the theory collapses, and that the confusing series of explanations, definitions and suppositions supporting it are weak and shallow. Each part builds upon the previous, and the entire series should be read to grasp the fullest picture?and the vital implications that flow from its conclusions.

Why is evolution cemented in the minds of many as fact, when it is nothing more than theory?

There would never be depressions. It would be smooth sailing 24/7 if government had this kind of power, but it doesnt. Well, it has the power to interfere, but it is not the means of "stimulating the economy." Who stimulates the economy?  Who stimulates it? Breaking Up Is Harder to Do After Housing Fall

John Goerke said his divorce became bumpier when the housing market crashed. ?That changed everything,? Mr. Goerke said.

When Marci Needle and her husband began to contemplate divorce in June, they thought they had enough money to go their separate ways. They owned a million-dollar home near Atlanta and another in Jacksonville, Fla., as well as investment properties.

Marci Needle in front of the home she and her husband once shared in Alpharetta, Ga.

Now the market for both houses has crashed, and the couple are left arguing about whether the homes are worth what they owe on them, and whether there are any assets left to divide, Ms. Needle said.

?We?re really trying very hard to be amicable, but it puts a strain on us,? said Ms. Needle, the friction audible in her voice. ?I want him to buy me out. It?s in everybody?s interest to settle quickly. That would be my only income. It?s been incredibly stressful.?

Amorous mosquitoes "sing" a mating duet by beating their wings together in harmony, US scientists have discovered.

They eavesdropped on a male Aedes aegypti mosquito pursuing a female in mating flight, and recorded the couples courtship "love song".

The insects spread diseases like yellow fever and dengue, so scientists are seeking ways to control their numbers.

Fever pitch

The amorous couple began to beat their wings together at a matching frequency - 1,200 hertz.

This love song is a "harmonic", or multiple, of their individual frequencies - 400 Hz for the female and 600 Hz for the male.

Whats more, the high pitch hum exceeds the previously known upper limit for hearing in mosquitoes.

hearing range extends to 2,000 Hz.

These discoveries may inspire new ideas for interfering with the mating process of both Aedes aegypti and Anopheles gambiae, which carries malaria.

Obamas Presidential Limo Will Be a Rolling Tank With Windows

The inauguration of Barack Obama will not only bring about a wholesale turnover in the political leadership of the country but it will also unveil the newest in a long line of Presidential limos.

According to Presidential vehicle experts, the new limo is a beast-like General Motors truck-based Cadillac that is so tough its like a rolling tank with windows.

Among the vehicles main features are windows that are 5 inches thick, 19.5-inch Goodyear RHS tires (same as super tough trucks), and possibly even a lock safety mechanism that seals off the car like a bank vault in case of an emergency.

Because the Secret Service keeps details of the limo understandably private, even the most knowledgeable security experts dont really know how much gadgety tech is being installed in the new ride. But its not stopping them making a few informed guesses.

Freecycle is a wonderfully smart program that is totally free. In order to cut down on landfills being inundated with unnecessary waste, this nonprofit organization began in Tuscon in 2003 by founder Deron Beal. Today, the grassroots movement is made up of thousands of local groups in over 70 countries with over 5 million members. Because of the Freecycle program, over 400 tons of unused items have been kept out of landfills globally, each day.

Whether you are looking for a specific item or want to get rid of one, the Freecycle Network is just the ticket. If you have a perfectly good computer monitor taking up space and hate to throw it away, just list it on Freecycle Network. If you are in need of a baby bed for your grandchild, ask for one. Whether you are looking to give or looking to get, the item will get a good home and stay out of the dump.

China May Prevent U.S. Economic Recovery, Thwart Obamas Spending Plan

Global bank consolidation will be introduced as the remedy , which is the globalist goal, as this article linked by Drudge hints: Measures will be taken at the G-20 meeting...Sarkozy ... U.S. debt is losing its appeal in China

HONG KONG: China has bought more than $1 trillion in American debt, but as the global downturn has intensified, Beijing is starting to keep more of its money at home - a shift that could pose some challenges to the U.S. government in the near future but eventually may even produce salutary effects on the world economy.

On Tuesday, the U.S. president-elect, Barack Obama, said Americans should get used to the prospect of "trillion-dollar deficits for years to come" as he seeks to finance an $800 billion economic stimulus package.

In the past five years, China has spent as much as one-seventh of its entire economic output on the purchase of foreign debt - largely U.S. Treasury bonds and American mortgage-backed securities.

But now, Beijing is seeking to pay for its own $600 billion economic stimulus

"All the key drivers of Chinas Treasury purchases are disappearing," said Ben Simpfendorfer, an economist

Reporting from London -- The Bank of England slashed its benchmark interest rate to an all-time low today in an aggressive bid to shore up an economy battered by recession and the global credit crunch.

The new rate of 1.5%, down half a percentage point, is the lowest in the banks 315-year history. Even during the Great Depression, rates never dipped below 2%. The cut reflects just how grave the British central banks directors believe the economic situation is, with the pound having plunged in value and the specter of deflation hovering.

"The world economy appears to be undergoing an unusually sharp and synchronized downturn.

If the economy continues to slide sharply and deflation becomes more likely, the Bank of England will come under pressure to try more drastic measures to boost the monetary supply, either by injecting more cash into the system through various financial mechanisms or simply printing more money.

But from office workers to tradies, many Aussies will tough out the 9 to 5 grind, day in and day out, without the reward of a single beach trip or city escape.

Shockingly, one third of full-time workers will take not one day of annual leave this year, according the countrys largest ever study into annual leave accrual undertaken by Tourism Australia.

The figures show Australians work the longest hours in the developed world.

Nearly 60 per cent of full-timers dont use their four weeks holidays each year and have 8 weeks or more up their sleeve.

Corporate men aged between 35 and 49 represent the largest group with accrued leave - and half of them have children under the age of 12.

All this adds up to 121 million days of accrued annual leave, equalling $31 billion in holiday pay.

People are so engaged in managing how others perceive them that they are often unable to separate truth from fiction in their own minds, Feldmans research shows.

"People almost lie reflexively," Feldman says. "They dont think about it as part of their normal social discourse." But it is, the research showed.

"Were trying not so much to impress other people but to maintain a view of ourselves that is consistent with the way they would like us to be," Feldman said. We want to be agreeable, to make the social situation smoother or easier, and to avoid insulting others through disagreement or discord.

US President elect Barack Obama introduces education secretary

The incoming Obama administration is prepared to abandon George Bushs doctrine of isolating Hamas by establishing a channel to the Islamist organisation, sources close to the transition team say.

The move to open contacts with Hamas, which could be initiated through the US intelligence services, would represent a definitive break with the Bush presidencys ostracising of the group. The state department has designated Hamas a terrorist organisation, and in 2006 Congress passed a law banning US financial aid to the group.

There is no talk of Obama approving direct diplomatic negotiations with Hamas early on, but he is being urged by advisers to initiate low-level or clandestine approaches, and there is growing recognition in Washington that the policy of ostracising Hamas is counter-productive.

Pharmaceutical Love Potion: Not Yet...

clippers remarks: In humans, brain regions associated with dopamine are activated in mothers looking at pictures of their children, and lovers at each other ? and, perhaps instructively, in drug addicts taking heroin or cocaine. To Young, all this means that science may soon treat lovelessness as easily as it now treats depression and anxiety. "Drugs that manipulate brain systems at whim to enhance or diminish our love for another may not be far away," he writes. Not so fast, said Fisher. The alterations required to manipulate love, she said, are likely so complex and far-reaching as to be unattainable in a pill. "There are cognitive processes and limbic reactions associated with basic emotions," said Fisher. "And you can change brain chemistry, but youre still not going to change memories and experiences in a human being."

For those of you perplexed by loves elusiveness, take heart: Science is on the case. But even if researchers can turn love into peer-reviewed literature, they might not be able to bottle it.

"People think were going to get a love potion, and thats nonsense," said Helen Fisher, a Rutgers University evolutionary anthropologist. "I dont think they understand how complex the brain is, and what a powerful role experience plays."

Fishers comments were prompted by an essay, entitled "Love: Neuroscience reveals all" and published Wednesday in Nature

This research shows how a "biochemical chain of events,"

produces neurological patterns associated with subjective experiences described as love.

Studies on the more-or-less monogamous prairie vole, for example, suggest that a neurotransmitter called oxytocin is important to mate bonding

Oxytocin interacts with another transmitter, pleasure-inducing dopamine.

A Low-Energy Water Purifier

A Yale University spinoff called Oasys

developed a novel desalination device that reduces the energy needed to purify water to one-tenth of that required by conventional systems.

Goldman Sachs estimates that global water consumption is doubling every 20 years

in 2008, the total worldwide water market was worth $522 billion

Reverse osmosis currently produces water at a cost of about $0.68 to $0.90 per cubic meter. Oasys estimates that engineered osmosis will cost just $0.37 to $0.44 per cubic meter once fully scaled up.

Oasys says that the first market it will focus on will be wastewater reuse. The second will be reprocessing wastewater produced by the oil and gas industries. Instead of having to pay to haul this water away, companies would treat it on-site using the Oasys system.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) believe theyve solved the age-old problem of how to shit in space.

The current ISS toilet is a Russian-built, western-style commode that sucks waste away like a vacuum cleaner. Use of that toilet requires practice before heading to space, particularly because an improperly seated user has the potential to create a messy situation.

Clean and easy to use, the envisioned space toilet is designed to be worn like a diaper around the astronauts waist at all times. Sensors detect when the user relieves him or herself, automatically activating a rear-mounted suction unit that draws the waste away from the body through tubes into a separate container. In addition to washing and drying the wearer after each use, the next-generation space toilet will incorporate features that eliminate unwanted sound and odor.

The Voices in Your Head ? a Zen cartoon

Her books (in particular The Depression Book and (Regardless of What You Were Taught To Believe) There Is Nothing Wrong With You: Going Beyond Self-Hate ) and listening to the weekly Open Air Talk Radio podcast she hosts (archives available online going back to November 2002 btw) have helped me go from being suicidally depressed a few years ago to spending the majority of my time in the emotional range between "content" and "happy" these days, with occasional surges into "joyful". I highly recommend them to, well, pretty much anyone. "The Voices" is a cartoon series based on the ideas in her teaching. Its a light-hearted way of looking at the conditioned thought patterns that we usually dont notice but which keep us locked in suffering and self-hat
We love bringing fun and laughter to the practice of conscious, compassionate awareness. In that spirit, we have created a cartoon series called ?The Voices,? referring, of course, to the voices in our heads. We will illustrate the nearly endless stream of chatter, judgment, criticism, daydreams, opinions, and aimless wanderings that we hear day in and day out. Rather than taking these voices seriously, these light-hearted cartoons will help us simply notice ?The Voices? with humor.

Revolutionary stem cell therapy boosts bodys ability to heal itself

Stem cell emerging from bone marrow

British researchers hope treatment will help repair heart attack damage or broken bones

A groundbreaking medical treatment that could dramatically enhance the bodys ability to repair itself has been developed by a team of British researchers.

The therapy, which makes the body release a flood of stem cells into the bloodstream, is designed to heal serious tissue damage caused by heart attacks and even repair broken bones. It is expected to enter animal trials later this year and if successful will mark a major step towards the ultimate goal of using patients own stem cells to regenerate damaged and diseased organs.

When the body is injured, bone marrow releases stem cells that home in on the damaged area. When they arrive, they start to grow into new tissues, such as heart cells, blood vessels, bone and cartilage.

Hispaniolan solenodon (Gregory Guida)

Rare footage of one of the worlds most strange and elusive mammals has been captured by scientists.

Large, and with a long, thin snout, the Hispaniolan solenodon resembles an overgrown shrew; it can inject passing prey with a venom-loaded bite.

Little is known about the creature, which is found in the Caribbean, but it is under threat from deforestation, hunting and introduced species.

Researchers say conservation efforts are now needed.

The mammal was filmed in the summer of 2008 during a month-long expedition to the Dominican Republic - one of only two countries where this nocturnal, insect-eating animal (Solenodon paradoxus) can be found (the other is Haiti).

Dr Richard Young, from Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, said: "My colleagues were excited and thrilled when they found it in the trap.

"But despite a months worth of trapping effort, they only ever caught a single individual."

Study Reveals Why First Impressions Count

Now scientists have studied one reason why this is true. When a person makes a bad first impression, the negative feelings are harder to overcome than a betrayal that occurs after ties are established.

First impressions matter when you want to build a lasting trust,"

"If you get off on the wrong foot, the relationship may never be completely right again. Its easier to rebuild trust after a breach if you already have a strong relationship."

For instance, say you have a lunch date with a new business partner or potential boyfriend/girlfriend. If the other person is late or doesnt show up, you are likely to mistrust that person and probably not set up future dates. But if the other person has been on time for lunch in your first few meetings and then shows up late, you will be more likely to give that person the benefit of the doubt, Lount said.

Were trying to discover what makes a male mosquito more attractive... We think females are assessing their fitness based on how well they can sing

Amorous mosquitoes "sing" a mating duet by beating their wings together in harmony, US scientists have discovered.

Understanding their mating habits could open up new avenues, says a team from Cornell University, writing in Science.

The familiar buzz of a flying female mosquito may be irritating to humans, but for her male counterpart, it is an irresistible mating signal.

Males and females each have their own characteristic flight tone - which they create by beating their wings.

This love song is a "harmonic", or multiple, of their individual frequencies - 400 Hz for the female and 600 Hz for the male.

"Very little is known about mosquito mating behaviour - especially in males - it has largely been ignored.

Spookfish

Of all the animals in the world, the lowly spookfish has the oddest eyes ? compound mechanisms that bear more than a passing resemblance to rearview mirrors

The bottom half of its eyes point upwards. The upper half point downwards, and are backed with a layer of reflective guanine crystals that bounce a focused image into the retina

In nearly 500 million years of vertebrate evolution, and many thousands of vertebrate species living and dead, this is the only one known to have solved the fundamental optical problem faced by all eyes ? how to make an image ? using a mirror," said Julian Partridge, a University of Bristol vision ecologist, in a press release

Like the eyes, the specimen itself was unique: until Tubingen University neurobiologist Hans-Joachim Wagner captured one off the island of Tonga, a living spookfish had never been seen.

Magueijo, a 40-year old native of Portugal, puts forth the heretical idea that in the very early days of the universe light traveled faster?an idea that if proven could dethrone Einstein and forever change our understanding of the universe. He is a pioneer of the varying speed of light (VSL) theory of cosmology -an alternative to the more mainstream theory of cosmic inflation- which proposes that the speed of light in the early universe was of 60 orders of magnitude faster than its present value.

Vsl Solving the most intractable problems of cosmology in one brilliant leap, Magueijo?s varying-speed-of-light theory (VSL) would have stunning implications for space travel, black holes, time dilation, and string theory?and could help uncover the grand unified theory that ultimately eluded Einstein.

I?m guessing that wholmever designed the page set it up so that the winner?s name would be moved to the top of each nominated award list after the awards are concluded. This way users will easily be able to skim the list and look at the top highlighted name of each nominated award for the winner.

The new reality

The banking industry is running scared. They think you won?t be able to keep up with your credit card payments in 2009 as the nation continues to work its way through this economic meltdown.

Reducing credit card limits, closing down accounts with no warning, and abruptly increasing interest rates are just some of the aggressive tactics the card companies are implementing right now to shore up their business.

What you must do in 2009

  • Make it a priority to pay off your credit card balances.

  • Read every statement and all correspondence from your credit card company to make sure you are aware of any changes to your account, such as skyrocketing interest rates.

  • Work to get your FICO credit score above 720.

  • Be very careful where you turn to for help with credit card debt. Debt consolidators are often a very bad deal. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling is a smarter choice.

Its common to resolve to lose weight, but any sane person dreads a diets dulling effect on the brain

Here are five things you should know about feeding your brain

    1. Fuel it up

The brain, which accounts for 2 percent of our body weight, sucks down roughly 20 percent of our daily calories.

    2. Become a grazer

The brain needs Goldilocks portions of energy: not too much, not too little.

    3. Eat lower on the glycemic index (GI)

The glycemic index ranks foods according to how they affect blood glucose levels. Pretzels are high on the index, because they cause blood sugar to rise very quickly. Raw carrots, by comparison, have a low glycemic ranking.

    4. Know your fats

Despite fats ability to lower the GI of a meal, not all fats are equal. Trans fats, common in fast food, are the worst. Saturated fats are not great. Unsaturated fat is the healthiest.

    5. Know yourself

People who chronically under-eat, over-exercise or regularly skip meals can become fuzzy-headed even after a minor dip in glucose

Most if not all galaxies, including our own Milky Way, are believed to have massive black holes at their cores.

It was unclear whether black holes came first, helping create galaxies by pulling matter towards them, or whether they arose in already formed galaxies.

"It looks like the black holes came first," said Dr Chris Carilli, from the US National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Socorro, New Mexico, who took part in the study. "The evidence is piling up."

Earlier studies of nearby galaxies had revealed an intriguing link between the masses of black holes and the central "bulges" of stars and gas in galaxies.

Generally, the mass of a black hole was observed to be about 1,000th that of the mass of the surrounding galactic bulge.

UK Interest Rates Hit 314 Year Low

The Bank of England has fulfilled most analysts expectations by reducing its base rate again, setting it at its lowest ever value of 1.5 percent.

A new precedent has been set in the Bank of Englands 314-year history, following the latest decision from its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).

Bank Sets Rate to Record Low

The MPC has set the Banks base rate to 1.5 percent, the lowest it has ever been. The rate - which had previously been at two percent - has been cut sharply since October as the Bank attempts to improve economic conditions by encouraging lending from high street mortgage and loans firms.

If banks and other lenders pass on the cuts to their customers, then it is cheaper for consumers to get mortgage loans. Additionally, people who already have variable rate loans might pay less interest, meaning they will have more money in their pocket to spend in the economy.

Remember Michael Crichtons science-fiction novel, "Prey"? Well,  researchers at the University of York have investigated large swarms of up to 10,000 miniature robots which can work together to form a single, artificial life form. The multi-robot approach to artificial intelligence is a relatively new one, and has developed from studies of the swarm behavior of social insects such as ants.

    Swarm

Swarm robotics is a field of study based on the supposition that simple, individual robots can interact and collaborate to form a single artificial organism with more advanced group intelligence.

As a part of an international collaboration dubbed the "Symbiotic Evolutionary Robot Organisms" project, or "Symbrion" for short, researchers are developing an artificial immune system which can protect both the individual robots that form part of a swarm, as well as the larger, collective organism.

Reid Thinks Ted Stevens Should Not be Punished

You guys make the laws that take money from our paychecks to pay you guys to look after our best interests. Here?s a news flash, Harry, it is NOT in our best interest to have money funneled to states for your pet projects. It is NOT in our best interest to remodel Ted Stevens home. It is NOT in our best interest to support criminal senators.

It IS in this country?s best interest that criminals be made to suffer the consequences for their felonious activities. I dispute your description of him being a ?real war hero? , true he served during WWII and his squadron received the Air Medal, just as many others did. You say he was behind the curve of ?modern ethics?, what does this mean? Ethics knows no time frame, sir.
Former senator Ted Stevens (yes, now actually former) is keeping up the fight against his guilty verdict -- and now Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid has lent him a hand.

Reid told Politico that he believes Stevens shouldnt serve jail time.

My personal feeling, you guys, I dont know what good that [would do]... He was a real war hero too, you know. Hes been punished enough

Reid said he thinks Stevens was simply behind the curve of modern ethics standards in not disclosing the $250,000 in gifts he received from VECO CEO Bill Allen, saying of the famously internet-unsavvy Uncle Ted that "its a different world we live in, and Stevens did not understand that."

Sentencing for Stevens had tentatively been scheduled for next month, but its unlikely that hell be sentenced any time soon. Last month, lawyers for Stevens asked for a new trial, claiming that the prosecution had presented false evidence and withheld information that could have helped the defense.

He says that there were 3 Israeli deaths in 7 years from Hamas rockets in Gaza. Carter summarizes the present status of conflict: After 12 days of "combat," the Israeli Defense Forces reported that more than 1,000 targets were shelled or bombed. During that time, Israel rejected international efforts to obtain a cease-fire, with full support from Washington . Seventeen mosques, the American International School, many private homes and much of the basic infrastructure of the small but heavily populated area have been destroyed. Jimmy Carter: An unnecessary war

I know from personal involvement that the devastating invasion of Gaza by Israel could easily have been avoided.

From Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman, who was negotiating between the Israelis and Hamas, we learned that there was a fundamental difference between the two sides. Hamas wanted a comprehensive cease-fire in both the West Bank and Gaza, and the Israelis refused to discuss anything other than Gaza.

the 1.5 million inhabitants of Gaza were being starved

Hamas leaders in Damascus, however, agreed to consider a cease-fire in Gaza only, provided Israel would not attack Gaza and would permit normal humanitarian supplies to be delivered to Palestinian citizens.

the Egyptians and Hamas informed us that all military action by both sides and all rocket firing would stop on June 19, for a period of six months

Anti-Israel Doctor Fakes CPR On Palestinian Boy For Hamas Videographer

The video claims to be filmed by the brother of a Palestinian teen that claims the boy was one of two purposefully killed by a missile fired at them by an Israeli drone as they played.

Mads Gilbert, the radical Marxist Norwegian doctor that was the focus of a Fox News report earlier today for being an anti-Israeli Hamas apologist, has been positively identified as one of two doctors caught faking CPR on a Palestinian boy that "died" in video featured today on CNN.

CNN editors who swallowed the story of the poorly-acted video unquestioningly?no doubt because it fit the anti-Israeli narrative familiar to CNN viewers and critics?have now pulled the video without explanation, correction, or retraction.

It has also been determined that the videographer who filmed his brothers "death" is the general manager of a company that hosts web sites for Hamas.

Dr. Gilbert was allowed into Gaza by the Israelis just 2 days ago to provide medical care. He was involved in faking war crimes less than 48 hours later.

China is establishing a formidable presence in Namibia. In the last few years it has moved in large numbers of people as well as taking up numerous business opportunities.

China is also buying its way into Namibia by giving grants and interest-free loans to the nation. In 2007, China loaned N$1bn (?83m) to Namibia in order to buy Chinese software to use across Namibian public service organizations. Is it a case of conquering Namibia, along with the rest of Africa? Undoubtedly, China has become a major player in the competition for African resources across the continent. It is giving a several billion US dollar credit line to Angola, an oil-rich country. And as in Namibia, this is accompanied by Chinese construction firms rebuilding roads, schools and clinics.

    when

(SWAPO) fought for liberation from South Africa, China provided weapons, money and moral support to Namibia. This has not been forgotten by SWAPO, the ruling party in Namibia since its independence in 1990.

According to testimonies gathered by the UN, Israeli soldiers evacuated around 110 Palestinians to a single-storey house in Zeitoun, south-east Gaza. Protests over BART shooting turn violent

A person is dead and the person who took his life does not have to answer for it? This is wrong and he needs to stand before a judge and answer to his accusers. How can there be justification for shop owners to lose their business or innocent individuals to lose their vehicles because a persons life was wrongly taken by police? This mob mentality that instigates the random attacks of innocent individuals is criminal. A civilized society needs to punish the wrongdoers not the innocent. This mob became as guilty as the system they are protesting. There is a 10 minute video covering the riot and video by witnesses of the actual shooting.
    Clip Source: www.sfgate.com

A protest over the fatal shooting by a BART police officer of an unarmed man mushroomed into several hours of violence Wednesday night as demonstrators smashed storefronts and cars, set several cars ablaze and blocked streets in downtown Oakland.

The roving mob expressed fury at police and frustration over societys racial injustice. Yet the demonstrators were often indiscriminate, frequently targeting the businesses and prized possessions of people of color.

They smashed a hair salon, a pharmacy and several restaurants. Police in riot gear tried to control the crowd, but some people retreated along 14th Street and bashed cars along the way.

Wednesday nights vandalism victims had nothing to do with the shooting death by a BART police officer of Oscar Grant on New Years Day - but that did little to sway the mob.

Mandingo Hayes, who is black, said he participated in the protest because "were tired of all these police agencies getting away with shooting unarmed black and Latino males."

    New way to fuse cells

    clipped by: cakebelly

MIT engineers have developed a new, highly efficient way to pair up cells so they can be fused together into a hybrid cell. The new technique should make it much easier for scientists to study what happens when two cells are combined. For example, fusing an adult cell and an embryonic stem cell allows researchers to study the genetic reprogramming that occurs in such hybrids.

The researchers, led by a collaboration between Joel Voldman, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science, and Rudolf Jaenisch, professor of biology and a member of the Whitehead Institute, report the new technique in the Jan. 4 online edition of Nature Methods.

Prior to 2007, homeowners had to prove they were trying to get away from an intruder before they could use deadly force, Reed said.

    But not anymore.

"You have a right to defend your home, theres no question in that," Reed said. "When you do that sort of thing you really have to have a justifiable fear."

And that means more homeowners who open fire on intruders are not being charged, which appears to be the case in a shooting Tuesday night that left two men dead in an attempted break-in.

People look at bodies of Palestinians killed in an Israeli air strike in Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza Strip January 8, 2009. In the Gaza Strip, Israeli aircraft bombed targets across the Hamas

    Times Online

The ICRC said that it had spent four days seeking Israeli guarantees of safe passage so that it could gain access to the houses in the badly damaged Zaytun neighbourhood of the city. It was finally allowed to send in a rescue team and four Palestine Red Crescent Society ambulances yesterday afternoon and said today that what they found was shocking.

In one house they discovered four small children, alive but too weak to stand, next to the bodies of their dead mothers. In all their were 12 dead bodies lying on mattresses.

In another house they found 15 survivors of the Israeli bombardment, several of them wounded, and in a third, three corpses. At that point they were ordered to leave by Israeli soldiers manning a post some 80 metres away, but they refused to do so.

The children and the wounded had to be taken to the ambulances by donkey cart

Some events in 2009 may be more momentous, but surely not many: on April 29th the number of words in the English language will pass 1m.

First, who says?or, in tabloid (this meaning coined in 1902) journalese (1882), who sez? The answer is the Global Language Monitor, a company based in Austin, Texas. It keeps an eye on the use of language, especially English, and tracks changes.

is it really a fact that English will have 1m words on the predicted date

the actual date could be five days either side of April 29th

How many words are there? That depends on what counts as a word. Should ?write?, ?writes?, ?wrote?, ?written? count as four words or one? If one, what about ?be?, ?am?, ?are?, ?is?, ?was?, ?were?? What about the numberless words with different meanings? Should ?set? and ?stock?, for instance, each count as one, though their meanings are manifold? And what of winespeak, computer drivel and other jargon?

    English does

have lots of words, almost certainly more than any other tongue.

New national parks rule allowing loaded guns challenged by lawsuit

Posted by Michael Sangiacomo/Plain Dealer Reporter January 07, 2009 10:08AM

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? The National Parks Conservation Association and the Coalition of National Park Service Retirees filed suit this week in U.S. District Court to stop enforcement of a new regulation allowing loaded, concealed firearms in national parks, including the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

The Bush administration in December finalized a National Rifle Association-driven rule change to allow loaded, concealed firearms in all national parks except those located in two states: Wisconsin and Illinois.

The former rule, put in place by the Reagan Administration, required that firearms transported through national parks be safely stowed and unloaded.

In addition, the Brady Campaign also filed a complaint in federal court asking the court to strike down the the rule.

Survival of the Weak and Scrawny

Newsweek had a really fascinating article this week about how hunting practices are leading to a kind of ?evolution in reverse? as hunters kill off the ?best? animals (whether elk, or elephants, or mountain goats, or whatever) and leave the weak and scrawny ones to propagate themselves. Of course, the article acknowledges that it?s not really ?reverse? evolution, it?s just a shifting definition of ?fittest?. When you add humans into the mix as a predator, suddenly large tusks or a big rack of antlers is no longer a survival trait, but becomes a detriment. Thus, the article reports, most elephants in Asia and Africa no longer have tusks, and mountain goat?s horns are getting smaller and smaller.

However, the article also cautions that this sort of ?selective breeding? by humans may actually threaten the viability a species if hunting ultimately leads to a narrower and weaker gene pool

Great Mosque of Córdoba Now Used as Cathedral

    clipped by: brightlight4
clippers remarks: See text and images.

After conquering Cordoba in 1236, Ferdinand III king of Castile consecrated the Great Mosque as the citys cathedral. The Christian population of Cordoba used the former mosque with relatively minor changes for the next three hundred years. In the early 16th century the Bishop and Canons of the cathedral proposed the construction of a new cathedral, and proposed to demolish the mosque in order to build it. The opposition of the townspeople to the proposed destruction of the building led to the unprecedented decision, endorsed by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, to insert an entire Gothic "chapel" into the very heart of the former Great Mosque. The result is an uneasy and controversial juxtaposition: the soaring forms of a Gothic cathedral rise from the very centre of the comparatively low, sprawling prayer hall whose architectural vocabulary is rooted in the forms of classical antiquity.

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven dont want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Lifes change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so dont waste it living someone elses life. Dont be trapped by dogma ? which is living with the results of other peoples thinking. Dont let the noise of others opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

Going metric would be nice global gesture

    Monday, January 05, 2009

There are only three nations in the world that have not officially adopted the International System of Units (the metric system) as their primary measurement system: Liberia, Myanmar and the United States.

Now one can understand why America has declined to support the Kyoto Protocol, the Landmine Ban Treaty, the Arms Trade Treaty, the Cluster Bomb Treaty, the declaration to decriminalize homosexuality, and the International Criminal Court, but the innocuous metric system? How can this be?

The U.S. government authorized the official use of metric measures, alongside British measures, in 1866; signed the Treaty of the Meter in 1875; authorized a three-year study on the feasibility of adopting the metric system in 1968, resulting in the 1971 blockbuster ?A Metric America: A Decision Whose Time Has Come?; passed the Metric Conversion Act of 1975

But 600 Palestinians dead in just over a week, thousands over the years since 1948?when the Israeli massacre at Deir Yassin helped to kick-start the flight of Palestinians from that part of Palestine that was to become Israel? is on a quite different scale. This recalls not a normal Middle East bloodletting but an atrocity on the level of the Balkan wars of the 1990s. And of course, when an Arab bestirs himself with unrestrained fury and takes out his incendiary, blind anger on the West, we will say it has nothing to do with us. Why do they hate us, we will ask? But let us not say we do not know the answer.

Gorilla farts so bad zoo forced to apologize

    gorilla-fart

Gorillas at Chessington Zoo are in the mist of a stench caused by brussell sprouts. The Zoo in London was forced to issue an apology to guests after giving the gorillas a Christmas treat of Brussels sprouts. The brussell sprouts are very nutritious, but the stench caused by the gorilla farts caused horror amongst the men and women with reports of nausea and small children crying.

    Gorilla keeper Michael Rozzi said:

?We feed the gorillas brussel sprouts during the winter because they are packed with vitamin C and have great nutritional benefits.

?Unfortunately, an embarrassing side effect is that it can cause bouts of flatulence in humans and animals alike.

?However, I don?t think any of us were prepared for a smell that strong.?

Reports that the Gorillas were asking people to pull their finger have not been verified.

    Rise in justified shootings continues

    By Robert Crowe - Express-News

One week into the new year, San Antonio residents and police have already used deadly force to protect themselves or their homes in three incidents, resulting in two people dead and two injured.

The shootings follow a year in which residents and police killed more than twice as many people as the previous year in what officials have deemed justified homicides, in which the shooter acted within the law.

A fatal shooting of two suspected home invaders Tuesday night marked the latest example of a resident using deadly force to fend off intruders, authorities said.

Various law enforcement agencies across the country also have reported an increase in justified homicides. George R. Franks Jr., a criminal justice professor at Stephen F. Austin State University, said publicity of high-profile justified shootings has inspired others to take up arms.
