Those violations include: Collective punishment ? the entire 1.5 million people who live in the crowded Gaza Strip are being punished for the actions of a few militants. Targeting civilians ? the air strikes were aimed at civilian areas in one of the most crowded stretches of land in the world Disproportionate military response ? the air strikes have not only destroyed every police and security office of Gazas elected government, but have killed and injured hundreds of civilians Certainly the rocket attacks against civilian targets in Israel are unlawful. But that illegality does not give Israel any right to violate international humanitarian law and commit war crimes in its response the one Israeli killed today is the first in over a year ![]() Webb Sets His Sights On Prison Reformclipped by: reimers![]() Somewhere along the meandering career path that led James Webb to the U.S. Senate, he found himself in the frigid interior of a Japanese prison. A journalist at the time, he was working on an article about Ed Arnett, an American who had spent two years in Fuchu Prison for possession of marijuana. In a January 1984 Parade magazine piece, Webb described the harsh conditions imposed on Arnett, who had frostbite and sometimes labored in solitary confinement making paper bags. "But, surprisingly, Arnett, home in Omaha, Neb., says he prefers Japans legal system to ours," Webb wrote. "Why? Because its fair, he said." This spring, Webb (D-Va.) plans to introduce legislation on a long-standing passion of his: reforming the U.S. prison system. Jails teem with young black men who later struggle to rejoin society, he says. Drug addicts and the mentally ill take up cells that would be better used for violent criminals. Study: Virginity Pledges Are Ineffectiveclipped by: reimers![]() Teenagers who pledge to remain virgins until marriage are just as likely to have premarital sex as those who do not promise abstinence and are significantly less likely to use condoms and other forms of birth control when they do, according to a study released today. The new analysis of data from a large federal survey found that more than half of youths became sexually active before marriage regardless of whether they had taken a "virginity pledge," but that the percentage who took precautions against pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases was 10 points lower for pledgers than for non-pledgers. "Taking a pledge doesnt seem to make any difference at all in any sexual behavior," said Janet E. Rosenbaum of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, whose report appears in the January issue of the journal Pediatrics. "But it does seem to make a difference in condom use and other forms of birth control that is quite striking." Margaret and Helen on the shoe-throwing incidentclipped by: masburyclippers remarks: "It should bother him, at least a little bit." Eventually I did stop laughing, however, because after the initial reaction wore off, I started paying attention to the gravity of the situation. In truth, it is not funny at all. Offering someone the ?sole of your shoe? is considered a grave insult in the Arab world. But even more sobering is what Zaidi said as he threw the shoes: ?This is a farewell kiss, you dog. This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq.? And after he was knocked to the ground he continued saying, ?Killer of Iraqis, killer of children.? OK. I am not thinking it is all that funny anymore. How about you? But the way Bush reacted is probably the best example of why our 43rd President should be run out of town on a rail. After the shoe incident, Bush tried to laugh it all off by saying, ?It didn?t bother me, and if you want the facts it was a size 10 shoe he threw at me.? Well it should bother him, at least a little bit. He is indeed responsible for thousands of widows and orphans Win, Win, Win . . .clipped by: debbyskiHow many times do we have to see this play before we admit that it always ends the same way? Which play? The one where gasoline prices go up, pressure rises for more fuel-efficient cars, then gasoline prices fall and the pressure for low-mileage vehicles vanishes, consumers stop buying those cars, the oil producers celebrate, we remain addicted to oil and prices gradually go up again, petro-dictators get rich, we lose. I?ve already seen this play three times in my life. Trust me: It always ends the same way ? badly. So I could only cringe when reading this article from CNNMoney.com on Dec. 22: ?After nearly a year of flagging sales, low gas prices and fat incentives are reigniting America?s taste for big vehicles. There has to be a system that permanently changes consumer demand, which would permanently change what Detroit makes, which would attract more investment in battery technology to make electric cars, which would hugely help the expansion of the wind and solar industries Virginity Pledges Fail to Stop Teen Sexclipped by: Wiscoclippers remarks: Theres a big surprise, huh? Like so many things that the Bush administration does, this is both ineffective and expensive. The study found that five years after taking a pledge, 82% denied ever pledging. Pledging kids were virtually indistinguishable from non-pledgers in terms of sexual behavior -- including rates of anal and oral sex. The only real difference is that theyre less likely to use protection. The next time someone brings up "faith-based solutions," suggest reality-based solutions. This faith-based crap doesnt seem to ever work. Teenagers who take virginity pledges are no less sexually active than other teens, according to a new study. But the results, published in the journal Pediatrics, suggest that virginity pledgers are less likely to protect themselves against pregnancy or disease when they do have sex. Researchers say the findings suggest that virginity pledges may not significantly affect teenagers sexual behavior. Instead, they may decrease the likelihood of teenagers taking precautions, such as using a condom or using birth control, when they do have sex. Researchers say the federal government spends about $200 million annually on abstinence promotion programs, which include virginity pledges. Two previous studies have suggested that virginity pledges can delay sex, but researchers say those studies did not account for pre-existing differences between pledgers and non-pledgers. A Prisioner Of Hope In Cyberspaceclipped by: debbyski In virtual reality, traditional philosophical questions are no longer hypothetical. What is existence? How do we know? What is reality? Who am I? Despite the seductions of a futurist utopian vision, we should not be tempted to relinquish our primary world (the physical world) to the possibilities presented by virtual worlds. Our technologies are the vehicles for our metaphors, dreams and nightmares. The question I would like to propose is, "Where do we want these technological vehicles to take us, and why?" Our vision for the future or the lack thereof will have profound consequences for the quality of human and other forms of life on this planet. Our challenge for the present and the future is to develop a vision which can be shared by diverse global cultures. I am a prisoner of hope. Men enjoy computer games because of basic urge to conquer![]() Playing on computer consoles activates parts of the male brain which are linked to rewarding feelings and addiction, scans have shown. The more opponents they vanquish and points they score, the more stimulated this region becomes. In contrast, these parts of womens brains are much less likely to be triggered by sessions on the Sony PlayStation, Nintendo Wii or Xbox. "These gender differences may help explain why males are more attracted to, and more likely to become hooked on video games than females," he said. "I think its fair to say that males tend to be more intrinsically territorial. It doesnt take a genius to figure out who historically are the conquerors and tyrants of our species ? theyre the males. I believe that Jewish and Arab Americans have the right and the obligation to save Israel from itself, and provide dignity to the people of Palestine. Now, is the time for Jewish Americans to put pressure on our government to help Israel make the tough choices, it is the time for Arab Americans to work with their Jewish counterparts to resolve the Middle East crisis through honest dialogue, and coordinated pressure on their congress representatives. But most of all, it is the time for all Americans to reject the notion that their own tax dollars can be used to buy weapons to demolish the lives and properties of civilians living under siege, or to provide grants to expand settlements in the occupied land. Ive been giving away my books ever since my first novel came out, and boy has it ever made me a bunch of money. When my first novel, Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, was published by Tor Books in January 2003, I also put the entire electronic text of the novel on the Internet under a Creative Commons License that encouraged my readers to copy it far and wide. Within a day, there were 30,000 downloads from my site (and those downloaders were in turn free to make more copies). Three years and six printings later, more than 700,000 copies of the book have been downloaded from my site. The books been translated into more languages than I can keep track of, key concepts from it have been adopted for software projects and there are two competing fan audio adaptations online. What is certain is that every writer whos tried giving away e-books to sell books has come away satisfied and ready to do it some more. My fans tireless evangelism for my work doesnt just sell books--it sells me. Programming Quotesclipped by: slosd

Tags: luck Positive Effects of Meditation on the Brainclipped by: brightlight4Can you give an overview of the benefits of meditation, including Richard Davidsons studies on mindfulness meditation? At its core, meditation is an active process that requires alertness and attention, which explains why we often find increased brain activity in frontal lobes during practice. Usually you need to focus on something - a mantra, a visual or verbal prompt- while you monitor breathing. A variety of studies have already shown the stress management benefits of meditation, resulting in what is often called Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. What we are researching now is what are the cognitive - attention, memory- benefits? It is clear that memory depends on attention and the ability to screen out distractions - so we want to measure the effect of meditation on the brain, both structurally and functionally. 2008, A Photographic Review, Part 2 of 3clipped by: Perkalicious11clippers remarks: warning: may contain some graphic photos ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Freddie Hubbard, 1938-2008clipped by: Carl Lavinclippers remarks: A jazz great, Hubbards trumpet took him from Indiana to the world stage. Pinter was also a poet, screenwriter and, in later years, a political activist. His biographer wrote that, in terms of theatrical influence, of all the dramatists of the last century, Beckett was his only serious rival. The deteriorating situation in the former tourist haven comes despite an army offensive that began in 2007 and an attempted peace deal. The fact that the five sisters killed in Jabalya camp had grandparents who came from the very land whose more recent owners have now bombed them to death simply does not appear in the story. Tuesday, 30 December 2008 How easy it is to snap off the history of the Palestinians, to delete the narrative of their tragedy, to avoid a grotesque irony about Gaza which ? in any other conflict ? journalists would be writing about in their first reports: that the original, legal owners of the Israeli land on which Hamas rockets are detonating live in Gaza. That is why Gaza exists: because the Palestinians who lived in Ashkelon and the fields around it ? Askalaan in Arabic ? were dispossessed from their lands in 1948 when Israel was created and ended up on the beaches of Gaza. They ? or their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren ? are among the one and a half million Palestinian refugees crammed into the cesspool of Gaza, 80 per cent of whose families once lived in what is now Israel. One of these mysteriously appeared in our office when I came back from Christmas vacation. [Video] Add Up The Damageclipped by: debbyskiDoes anyone know where George W. Bush is? You don?t hear much from him anymore. The last image most of us remember is of the president ducking a pair of size 10s that were hurled at him in Baghdad. We?re still at war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Israel is thrashing the Palestinians in Gaza. And the U.S. economy is about as vibrant as the 0-16 Detroit Lions. But hardly a peep have we heard from George, the 43rd. When Mr. Bush officially takes his leave in three weeks (in reality, he checked out long ago), most Americans will be content to sigh good riddance. I disagree. I don?t think he should be allowed to slip quietly out of town. There should be a great hue and cry ? a loud, collective angry howl, demonstrations with signs and bullhorns and fiery speeches ? over the damage he?s done to this country. The Bush administration specialized in deceit Just Wonderingclipped by: thisnamecantbetakenGW is on vacation. Hes certainly had a lot of these vacations. And yeah, I understand, he still gets his briefings and the like. (I note, most white collar workers I know take work home during their vacations and weekends too.) I realize he doesnt have a boss and hes not accountable to anyone, but does he really need another vacation when hes leaving office in less than a month? Is presidenting poorly such a tough job? (And no, I dont think the fact that hes on vacation reduces the odds of him screwing up yet another thing in the next few weeks.) Amount of days President has been in office up to August 13th, 2008 = 2,427 days 74 Trips to Crawford = 466 days 142 Trips to Camp David = 450 days Amount of days President considered "Vacation Days" as of August 13th, 2008 = 916 8.74% of Presidents Time in Office has been Offical Vacation time as of August 13th, 2008 8.74%! Why did he take so many vacations? ?Because he can, my friends, because he can. Rick Is A Mistakeclipped by: debbyskiclippers remarks: "I am still excited about the tremendous changes in policy that I expect under an Obama administration. But its the job of progressive advocates to hold public officials accountable, and to speak up even when our friends drop the ball." Many people who know Warren as the affable megachurch pastor and best-selling author may be confused about the anger and disappointment that his selection has generated among progressive activists who worked so hard to help elect Obama. Heres my explanation; you can find plenty of other voices online. Warren has worked hard to cultivate a moderate public personality but his views are very similar to those of traditional Religious Right leaders. In an email sent before the 2004 election he wrote a Falwell-esque message proclaiming that, for Christian voters, the issues of abortion, marriage for same-sex couples, stem cell research, cloning and euthanasia were "non-negotiable." In fact, he said, they are "not even debatable because Gods word is clear on these issues." There is no shortage of religious leaders who reflect the values on which President-elect Obama campaigned and who are working to advance the common good. Were All Gazans Nowclipped by: thisnamecantbetakenWERE ALL GAZANS NOWThe consequences of Israels bloodlust could be global. Thats why were all Gazans now. Every dead child murdered by a cowardly Israeli Air Force pilot from thousands of feet above his defenceless victim drives many more to hate us. This in turn increases the probability of reprisals against us. This in turn leads to us losing our freedoms as our governments strip us of our rights in order to protect us from potential terrorism. But heres a question; who is financing Israel? It is our ally, the USA. And our government is not unfriendly either. Thats right. Our governments are supporting Israel as it murders innocent defenceless children in order to drive many men and women into hatred and terrorism, which of course benefits our governments because it wants to control us as much as it can so we dont discover the even more horrendous crimes it has committed Thats why were all Gazans now. Israel is effectively bombing our rights and freedoms to smithereens. Für die Inhalte dieses Feeds ist alleine der jeweilige Autor/Anbieter verantwortlich.
