Jefferson and slavery

Jefferson owned many slaves over his lifetime. Some find it baffling that Thomas Jefferson owned slaves yet was outspoken in saying that slavery was immoral and it should be abolished. Biographers point out that Jefferson was deeply in debt and had encumbered his slaves by notes and mortgages; he chose not to free them until he finally was debt-free, which he never was.[73] Jefferson seems to have suffered pangs and trials of conscience as a result.[74] He wrote about slavery, "We have the wolf by the ears; and we can neither hold him, nor safely let him go. Justice is in one scale, and self-preservation in the other."[75]

Woman buried in snow for 3 days found alive

No one expected to find Donna Molnar alive.

Searchers had combed the brutal backcountry of rural Ontario for the housewife from the city of Hamilton, who had left her home three days earlier in the middle of a blizzard to grocery shop.

Alongside his search-and-rescue dog Ace, Ray Lau on Monday tramped through the thick, ice-covered brush of a farmers field, not far from where Molnars van had been found a day earlier.

"Then, oh, all of a sudden, Ace bolted off," said Lau. "He stooped and looked down at the snow and just barked, barked, barked."

"There she was, there was Donna, her face was almost totally covered except for one eye staring back at me!" he said. "That was, Wow! There was a thousand thoughts going through my head. It was over the top."

Molnar was carefully extracted from a 3-foot-deep mound of snow that had apparently helped to insulate her.

Then, rescuers got their second shock.

Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer, tryptophan.

Mugabe Unleashes Wave of Terror with Mass Abductions

clipped by:spirithiker
clippers remarks: Robert Mugabe is a dictator in democratic clothing. The South African Development Community has been urging Mugabe to address the cholera epidemic (which he refuses to acknowledge) and the economic crisis (which he helped create). The U.S. recently gave $600,000 to fight the cholera epidemic. Any aid sent to this country ends up in the pockets and mouths of the ruling elite. Recent elections were marred with violence and intimidation designed to keep Mugabe in office. International pressure and sanctions are not changing anything in Zimbabwe. How can the world stand by and allow this humanitarian crisis to continue? We need a mechanism to rid ourselves of this vermin not give them aid.
Fears are mounting in Zimbabwe for the lives of more than 40 opposition officials and human rights activists who have been abducted as part of a renewed crackdown by the regime in Harare.

The operation, codenamed Chimumumu according to sources in the army, aims to eliminate political opponents and remove human rights monitors

Monitors including Human Rights Watch and The Independent have documented hundreds of cases of politically inspired disappearances and false imprisonment, torture and murder.

The pattern of abductions suggests a systematic effort to close down any information-gathering about government activities, either by the opposition, journalists or human rights groups.

However, dissident factions within the army are presenting a new problem for the government. Unprecedented clashes this month between soldiers and police have been followed by more skirmishes as the army is being affected by the economic crisis.

Cheney denied to the investigators, however, that he had done anything on purpose that would lead to the outing of Plame as a covert CIA operative. But the investigators came away from their interview with Cheney believing that he had not given them a plausible explanation as to how he could focus attention on Plame?s role in arranging her husband?s trip without her CIA status also possibly publicly exposed. At the time, Plame was a covert CIA officer involved in preventing Iran from obtaining weapons of mass destruction, and Cheney?s office played a central role in exposing her and nullifying much of her work....

There seems little doubt that Cheney was the mastermind behind the Plame outing, with this revelation strengthening that possibility.

Amazing Christmas Decorations from Around the World

The tradition of using small candles to light up the Christmas tree dates back to at least the middle of the XVIIth century. However, it took two centuries for the tradition to become widely established first in Germany and soon spreading to Eastern Europe.

Candles for the tree were glued with melted wax to a tree branch or attached by pins. Around 1890, candleholders were first used for Christmas candles. Between 1902 and 1914, small lanterns and glass balls to hold the candles started to be used.

Chocolate, Wine And Tea Improve Brain Performance

The team from Oxford?s Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics and Norway examined the relation between cognitive performance and the intake of three common foodstuffs that contain flavonoids (chocolate, wine, and tea) in 2,031 older people (aged between 70 and 74)

The role of micronutrients in age-related cognitive decline is being increasingly studied. Fruits and beverages such as tea, red wine, cocoa, and coffee are major dietary sources of polyphenols, micronutrients found in plant-derived foods. The largest subclass of dietary polyphenols is flavonoids, and it has been reported in the past that those who consume lots of flavonoids have a lower incidence of dementia

The latest findings seem to support the theory, although the researchers caution that more research would be needed to prove that it was flavonoids, rather than some other aspect of the foods studied, that made the difference. The effect was most pronounced for wine.

Why Everyone Should Learn the Theory of Evolution

Evolution should be taught as a practical tool for understanding drug resistance and the price of fish

Charles Darwin did not think of himself as a genius. ?I have no great quickness of apprehension or wit which is so remarkable in some clever men ...? he remarked in one passage of his autobiography. Fortunately for the rest of us, he was profoundly wrong in his assessment. So on February 12 the world will mark the bicentennial birthday of a scientist who holds a rightful place alongside Galileo, Copernicus, Newton and Einstein.

Darwin?s genius?and, yes, genius is the right word?is manifest in the way his theory of evolution can tie together disparate biological facts into a single unifying framework. Evolutionary geneticist Theodosius Dobzhansky?s oft-cited quotation bears repeating here: ?Nothing in biology makes sense, except in the light of evolution.?

Monday, more than 500 million gallons of toxic coal sludge burst through a retention wall in eastern Tennessee, causing massive property and environmental damage and leaving residents holding their breath over possible long-term consequences. Environmentalists said the spill was more than 30 times larger than the Exxon Valdez oil spill. The incident underscored the false nature of the ?clean coal? propaganda. In an interview with NBC Nightly News, Elliott Negin of the Union of Concerned Scientists explained:

This disaster shows that the term ?clean coal? is an oxymoron. It?s akin to saying ?safe cigarette.? Clean coal doesn?t exist.

The New York Times writes, ?Even as the authority played down the risks, the spill reignited a debate over whether the federal government should regulate coal ash as a hazardous material. Similar ponds and mounds of ash exist at hundreds of coal plants around the nation.?

But a draft report last year by the federal Environmental Protection Agency found that fly ash, a byproduct of the burning of coal to produce electricity, does contain significant amounts of carcinogens and retains the heavy metal present in coal in far higher concentrations. The report found that the concentrations of arsenic to which people might be exposed through drinking water contaminated by fly ash could increase cancer risks several hundredfold.

The breach occurred when an earthen dike, the only thing separating millions of cubic yards of ash from the river, gave way, releasing a glossy sea of muck, four to six feet thick, dotted with icebergs of ash across the landscape. Where the Clinch River joined the Tennessee, a clear demarcation was visible between the soiled waters of the former and the clear brown broth of the latter.

    Cheneys Legacy of Deception

In the end, the shame of Vice President Dick Cheney was total: unmitigated by any notion of a graceful departure, let alone the slightest obligation of honest accounting. Although firmly ensconced, even in the popular imagination, as an example of evil incarnate--nearly a quarter of those polled in this weeks CNN poll rated him the worst vice president in U.S. history, and 41 percent as "poor"--Cheney exudes the confidence of one fully convinced that he will get away with it all.

And why not? Nothing, not his suspect role in the Enron debacle, which foretold the economic meltdown, or his offices fabrication of the false reasons for invading Iraq, has ever been seriously investigated, because of White House stonewalling. Nor will the new president, committed as he is to nonpartisanship, be likely to open up Cheneys can of worms.

thoughts of money light up visual areas of the brain, scientists have found

Volunteers in the US had their brains scanned as they chose between red and green targets that varied in value at different times

Selecting a target might yield 10 cents, or nothing. But participants who made the right choices could earn up to 10 dollars

The experiment showed that rewards altered brain activation in many areas of the human visual system

?When a target has been valuable in the past - if selecting it had paid off with money - the visual system represented it more strongly

?Though it is too early to say how this relates to perception, it raises the intriguing possibility that we see things we value more clearly - much like the way the brain responds to a bright object versus a dimly-lit one.?

Activation was also seen in the frontal and parietal regions of the brain which have previously been implicated in anticipating and tracking rewards

the media has expected evangelicals, especially conservative evangelicals, to be draconian and retrograde, you know, they?ve made a hero out of Rick Warren without looking at who he really is and what he really believes.

the real Rick Warren is someone who fights the culture war with a velvet glove. He?s a religious right figure who?s figured out a new strategy to move into a Democratic post-Bush era and still hold influence. He even -- he freely admitted to a reporter from the Wall Street Journal that the principal difference, the only difference, between him and James Dobson is a matter of tone. And when I called Rick Warren?s PR handlers, you know, the people that are responsible for making him into this major national figure, from Larry A. Christmas is here and nativity scenes abound in Italy.

At Romes Altemps Palace a new exhibition displays a special "Presepe" these days. Its the restored nativity scene from the Royal Palace of Caserta.

The only surviving royal Christmas crib, this is one of the grandest illusionistic Neapolitan nativity scenes. It features  hundreds of terra cotta figures, all made in the 18th century.

A picture is worth a thousand words, so here is my personal rendition of this unique nativity scene.

Merry Christmas to all of you!

    Why?

Why is the massively valuable and versatile hemp plant illegal in the United States?

    Three reasons.

    Making hemo illegal:

    1. Provides make-work for a vast army of "law enforcers" who then are available to be used for other social control work

    2. Protects the market share of numerous well organized lobbies: alcohol makers, plastics and chemical manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, and cotton growers (still a powerful economic force in America 200 + years after the Civil War.)

    3. Gives fascist minded politicians yet another way to control the population

The scientist says that Santa understands that space stretches ? you can stretch time and compress space, in essence giving him 6 Santa months to deliver the presents.

?We believe that he uses nanotechnology to grow the presents under the tree, and has figured out how to turn irreversible thermodemic processes into reversible ones. So he really starts with soot and natural materials, puts them under the tree, and grows them in a reverse process to create the presents, wrapping it all.? says Silverberg.

    Humour as social bargaining :

    Is Humor Immoral?

    Clip Source: www.mindhacks.com

the psychology of humour and how it is used to negotiate and establish social hierarchies

looks at two theories of humour that try understand what makes something funny

A common explanation is the incongruity idea, that suggests when something is suddenly out of context it is more likely to seem funny

these theories "fail to explain why we are amused by certain instances of incongruity ? a man showing up to his job at a real-estate agency with a ?kick me? sign on his back ? but not others ? a man showing up to his job at a real-estate agency with a cure for cancer"

The other approach is the superiority theory, that suggests that humour is used to establish social hierarchies - those considered objects of humour are further down the social ranking

But its also the case that we seem to use it as a form of flattery for our superiors

Its a little short on links to actual studies which is a little frustrating but it otherwise an interesting and informative exploration

    Bees_1

Think all bees look alike? Well we dont all look alike to them, according to a new study that shows honeybees, who have 0.01% of the neurons that humans do, can recognize and remember individual human faces. For humans, identifying faces is critical to functioning in everyday life. But can animals also tell one face from another? Knowing honeybees unusual propensity for distinguishing between different flowers, visual scientist Adrian Dyer of Cambridge University in Cambridge, England, wondered whether that talent stretched to other contexts. So he and his colleagues pinned photographs of four different peoples faces onto a board. By rewarding the bees with a sucrose solution, the team repeatedly coaxed the insects to buzz up to a target face, sometimes varying its location.

in the bees brains, the memories stuck: The insects could pick out the target face even two days after being trained.

It comes as little surprise that obesity makes a person much more apt to get heart failure, a deadly condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood throughout the body

Heart failure, also known as congestive heart failure, contributes to 300,000 deaths each year in the United States

Conditions such as coronary artery disease and high blood pressure can leave the heart too weak or stiff to fill and pump blood efficiently

The lean and active group had the lowest risk and the obese and inactive group had the highest risk

As far as vigorous physical activity is concerned, even if somebody said they exercised one to three times per month -- which is a very low level of exercise -- they had an 18 percent reduction in the risk of heart failure after accounting for all other established risk factors

The benefit of exercise in cutting heart failure risk was seen in lean, overweight and obese men, the researchers found

  • Stir in 5 parts powdered red or brown clay.

  • Moisten with water until mixture is damp enough to mold into balls.

  • Pinch off a penny-sized piece of the clay mixture and roll it between the palms of your hands until it forms a tight ball (1 inch in diameter).

  • Set the balls on newspaper and allow to dry for 24 - 48 hours. Store in a cool, dry place until ready to sow.

  • Toss them at will! Please be respectful over other folks? property, though. It?s a lot tougher to talk to people about green space and guerrilla gardening when they?re angry.

Orangutans learn to trade favours - at a price

Orangutans can use their own currency which they use to buy favours such as winning bananas, scientists have discovered.

The apes can help each other get food by trading tokens, learning the value of each token and handing it over only in exchange for favours or food at the right value.

orangutans could learn the value of tokens and trade them, helping each other win bananas.

The discovery is the first evidence of "calculated reciprocity" in non-human primates

Initially, they were given several sets of tokens. One type of token could be exchanged by an orangutan for bananas for itself, another type could be used to gain bananas for a partner, and a third had no value.

Dok, the female, was especially good at swapping tokens to get bananas for Bim, the male. Sometimes Bim would point at the tokens to encourage her, but he was less interested in trading tokens that would win bananas for her. As she became less willing to help him out, Bim responded by trading more until their efforts were more or less equal.

Blog miracle saves Christmas for hard-luck family

(CNN) -- A family facing foreclosure is anything but a unique story in these troubled economic times.

Daniel and Ebony Sampson with their children.

But this is a happier story of one family whose financial ruin was averted by the actions of a friend, the compassion of strangers, the networking power of the Internet and the holiday spirit of giving.

"This is our Christmas story," said Ebony Sampson. "Its going to be told for generations and generations to come."

But in June, Daniel got sick. After several tests, his doctors concluded that he was suffering from salmonella after eating a tainted tomato. As a new employee of Bank of America, he had not accrued enough paid time off to keep his job as a credit-card account manager.

Suddenly, the sole breadwinner in the Sampson household was out of work. Though the Sampsons received unemployment checks from the government, the money wasnt enough to make ends meet.

DAMASCUS, Syria -- President Bashar al-Assad says he doesnt want to send a message to Barack Obama, exactly, but to express a three-part hope for the incoming administrations Middle East policy:

First, he hopes Obama wont start "another war anywhere in the world, especially not in the Middle East." And he trusts that the doctrine of "preemptive war" will end when George W. Bush leaves office.

Second, Assad said, "We would like to see this new administration sincerely involved in the peace process." He hopes that Obama will back Syrias indirect negotiations with Israel, and he urges the new administration to pursue "the Lebanese track and the Palestinian track, as well."

Asked whether he would mind if the Syrian track went first (a sequence that has worried some Syrians who prefer the ideological purity of following the Palestinians), Assad answered: "Of course not. Each track will help the other."

Third, he says he wants Syria and the United States to work together

What Christmas truce? Carol service for our troops on the Afghan frontline ends with a blast of reality from the Taliban

It was dusk in Helmand. And as the sun set over the baked earth, commandos wearing Santa hats gathered round the war memorial and began a simple chorus of carols.

    Then the Taliban attacked.

There was no time for the troops to think or even to take off their festive hats.

Any hopes of a Christmas truce, when hostilities cease and foes become friends for a few precious hours, were dashed in an instant.

But things are different in Afghanistan. At the first sound of enemy fire the Royal Marines of 40 Commando threw down their hymn sheets and sprinted to the mortar lines 200 yards away. Within a minute, they were returning fire.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ill. - Some health department workers in southern Illinois think they may have discovered some contaminated food ? at their own office Christmas gathering.

After the Lawrence County Health Department had a buffet for 72 people at a restaurant last week, 42 of the attendees suffered stomach problems, including the head of the department, Phyllis Wells.

Wells says the cause of the outbreak hasnt been pinpointed. But she suspects the culprit was a norovirus ? something people get from contact with those infected, ingesting contaminated food or drink, or by touching contaminated items and then their mouths.

Wells says it isnt lost on her that state health officials are now investigating a restaurant where food-inspection and other public health workers got sick.

There was no answer Monday at the restaurant. Wells says its her understanding the business hasnt reopened since the outbreak.

Is There Really a Credit Crunch?

    Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke

Is there a credit crunch? Was there ever? Those questions may seem absurd. Throughout the autumn, the interest rate banks charge each other broke one record after another as trust between institutions evaporated, investors stashed so much cash in super-safe Treasuries that yields approached zero, and the private securitization market for mortgages, which keeps capital flowing for more home loans, disappeared.

But during all of that, there was also persistent anecdotal evidence that lending to credit-worthy borrowers was doing just fine ? it seemed every other day some community bank CEO was on CNBC talking about how many loans his institution was making to small businesses and people who wanted to buy cars or houses. As the story of Chari, his surprise realization, and the academic dialogue that followed make clear, understanding what is happening in the economy

    is an incredibly difficult task

for people who have built their entire career

In resource-poor Japan, which imports 90% of its fuel, Kuzumaki is a marvel of energy self-sufficiency. Signs of the towns comprehensive focus on environmental sustainability are visible from its mountaintops to the pens of the dairy cows that once were the bedrock of local commerce. Atop Mt. Kamisodegawa, the 12 wind turbines, each 305 feet (93 m) tall, have the capacity to convert mountain gusts into 21,000 KW of electricity ? more than enough to meet the needs of the towns residents. The excess is sold to neighboring communities.

The force behind Kuzumakis programs is Tetsuo Nakamura, the towns mayor from 1999 until August of last year. Nakamura, a veterinarian and farmer with the handshake of a salesman, decided nearly a decade ago that Kuzumaki could become a role model for the rest of the country by developing itself as an exemplar of environmental best practices.

Fifty years ago some young MIT scholars delivered a radical notion to the world. They proposed that it is possible to scientifically study precise mechanisms and processes of human thought. The movement was the catalyst for many fields of study.

Now after a generation of productive research, a newer paradigm shift is taking place. Science is discovering that it is our emotions that make thought possible, not the other way around.

We simply cannot understand thought without understanding emotion

"Because we subscribed to this false ideal of rational, logical thought, we diminished the importance of everything else," said Marvin Minsky, a professor at MIT and pioneer of artificial intelligence. "Seeing our emotions as distinct from thinking was really quite disastrous."

It is pure reason- not feeling- that is the true hindrance to decision making. So take that, Mr. Spock!

An environmental disaster of epic proportions has occurred in Tennessee. Monday night, 2.6 million cubic yards (the equivalent of 525.2 million gallons, 48 times more than the Exxon Valdez spill by volume) of coal ash sludge broke through a dike of a 40-acre holding pond at TVAs Kingston coal-fired power plant covering 400 acres up to six feet deep, damaging 12 homes and wrecking a train.

Officials also said that the magnitude of this spill is such that the entire area could be declared a federal superfund site.

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2008-12-23-terrorblogs_N.htm?csp=34

Does that include criticizing the government?

We have a long history of voicing our opinion against our government officials, and we are not going to give that up that right without a fight.

The prospect of military roaming our streets as they do in our airports is distasteful and it will trigger even more protest.

Civil disobedience may have been instrumental in formally creating America but it is the people who use civil disobedience as a cover to loot stores and homes that worry me just as much as my fellow Americans pointing their military issue weapons at me for protesting what they are doing.

A new report from the U.S. Army War College?s Strategic Studies Institute says that the U.S. military must quickly prepare for massive civil unrest that could be precipitated by an ?unforeseen economic collapse?.

The following is a quote from this stunning report: ?DoD might be forced by circumstances to put its broad resources at the disposal of civil authorities to contain and reverse violent threats to domestic tranquility. Under the most extreme circumstances, this might include use of military force against hostile groups inside the United States.

This comes on the heels of a recent report that the Department of Defense plans to deploy 20,000 uniformed troops for operations inside the United States by 2011

apparently 20,000 uniformed soldiers will not be enough to control Americans. Barack Obama is calling for a "civilian national security force" that is as strong and is as well funded as the U.S. military.

Men who spent more (saved less) and who were more likely to shell out more than they earned reported having more sexual partners in the past five years and desired more future partners than other guys in the study.

Specifically, the 25 percent of men who were most conservative about spending had an average of three partners in the past five years and desired about one partner in the next five years. The 2 percent of men with the riskiest financial strategies had double those numbers.

    Should you work out?

And if you do, should you push yourself as hard as ever or take it easy? Will exercise have no effect, or make you feel better or worse?

Many avid exercisers make up their own rules, and it seems that many of them, like Dr. Michael Joyner, an exercise researcher at the Mayo Clinic who is a swimmer and runner, decide to keep exercising if they possibly can.

Now, Dr. Kaminsky said, he and others at Ball State encourage people to exercise when they have colds, at least if they have the type producing symptoms like runny noses and sneezing.

He is more cautious about other types of colds that produce fevers or symptoms below the neck such as chest congestion. Exercising with a head cold is not an issue for athletes, Dr. Kaminsky said, because most of them want to train no matter what. ?If anything they tend to push too much,? he said.

Scientists have discovered how stress can physically reshape the brain, causing extensive and long-lasting harm to both the human and animal brain. Researchers have found that stress causes brain cells to either shrink or grow, leaving victims of serious stress with big changes to their nervous systems.

One of the largest times of change is stress in early life, even stress in the womb. ?Prenatal stress can change the brain forever,?

Baram spent time working with laboratory mice. In order to simulate increased short-term stress levels in real life situations, the mice were immobilized for five hours and subjected to loud rock music. After an MRI brain scan of the mice, Baram noticesda decrease in the number of fibers that carry signals between neurons.

laboratory rats were restrained daily for roughly three weeks, the region of their brain involving learning and memory shrank by three percent.

The holiday is an insidious and overlooked factor in Americas dwindling savings rates, slack worth ethic, and high crime rates. Nor does Christmas truly fulfill its purported distributional objective: the transfer of gifts to those who need them. Moreover, the number of people rendered "joyous by Christmas is probably equaled or excelled by the number made to feel rather blue.

although Christmas is an important religious observance that provides wintertime fun for children (who would probably be having fun anyway), it fails the test of cost-effectiveness

Modern Christmas is like primitive Keynesianism, a short-run-oriented economic experiment that has been tried and found wanting.
