Bush strongly warns Iran on naval clash

JERUSALEM - President Bush warned Iran of "serious consequences" if it meddles again with U.S. warships in the Persian Gulf, opening a Mideast peacemaking mission Wednesday on an ominous note. He told Israel to dismantle unauthorized settlement outposts and demanded that the Palestinians halt rocket attacks from areas controlled by Hamas Islamic militants.

The witch aint dead, and Chris Matthews is a ding-dong

The glee with which Matthews and other angry male pundits prematurely danced on Hillarys grave made me -- for one night only -- a Clinton supporter.

So no, I have not been a Hillary Clinton supporter. But the torrent of ill-disguised hatred and resentment unleashed toward a briefly weakened Clinton this week shook that breezy naiveté right out of me, and made me feel something that all the hectoring from feminist elders could not: guilt for not having stood up for Hillary. I cant believe Im saying this, but had I been a New Hampshire voter on Tuesday, I would have pulled a lever for the former first lady with a song in my heart and a bird flipped at MSNBCs Chris Matthews, a man whose interest in bringing Clinton down hovers on the pathological, and whose drooling excitement at the prospect of her humiliation began to pulse from the television last week before most Iowa precincts had even begun to report results.

Katrina victim sues U.S. for $3 quadrillion

clipped by:wjbuntz
Clip Source: www.msnbc.msn.com

NEW ORLEANS - Hurricane Katrinas victims have put a price tag on their suffering and it is staggering ? including one plaintiff seeking the unlikely sum of $3 quadrillion.

The total number ? $3,014,170,389,176,410 ? is the dollar figure so far sought from some 489,000 claims filed against the federal government over damage from the failure of levees and flood walls following the Aug. 29, 2005, hurricane.

Of the total number of claims, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it has received 247 for at least $1 billion apiece, including the one for $3 quadrillion.

Some residents may have grossly exaggerated their claims to send a message to the corps, which has accepted blame for poorly designing the failed levees.

"I understand the anger," Scott said. "I also understand its a negotiating tactic: Aim high and negotiate down."

Personal food analyser

Ever wondered whether what you are eating is exactly what is described on the menu? Or whether the alcohol content of the brew at your local bar is higher or lower than stated? Today there is no easy way to tell, but one day you may own a gadget not unlike a Star Trek tricorder that can find out.

Analysing food has always been a complex business. One of the most common methods is spectroscopy, in which the sample is zapped with light and the reflected wavelengths measured and compared with a database of records from known foods and liquids.

But the consumer electronics company Philips says that lab-on-a-chip technology in which the components are shrunk to fit on a single chip should soon make this equipment much cheaper.

The company has come up with a design for a tiny analyser that small foods companies could afford and suggests that personal analysers that consumers could carry with them to bars and restaurants may not be far off.

This makes sense:
The mexicans have an incentive to live near the american border. The americans have less incentive to live near the mexican border.

If the two areas had been at comperable habitation/industrialization levels at one point and then were divided arbitrarily and one side degraded while the other side flourished, then an analogy to east germany would be relevant.

A pretty good view on the two most progressive candidates
Clip Source: www.zmag.org

There have been good reasons not to support John Edwards for president. For years, his foreign-policy outlook has been a hodgepodge of insights and dangerous conventional wisdom; his health-care prescriptions have not taken the leap to single payer; and all told, from a progressive standpoint, his positions have been inferior to those of Dennis Kucinich.

But Edwards was the most improved presidential candidate of 2007. He sharpened his attacks on corporate power and honed his calls for economic justice. He laid down a clear position against nuclear power. He explicitly challenged the power of the insurance industry and the pharmaceutical giants.

The main causes of John Edwards biggest problems with the media establishment have been tied in with his firm stands for economic justice instead of corporate power.

But, when it comes to policy positions, hes still no Dennis Kucinich. And thats why, as 2007 neared its end, I planned to vote for Kucinich when punching my primary ballot.

NASHUA, N.H. -- Heres how I, as a professional journalist, roll on the New Hampshire Campaign Trail. First I get into my rental car with my official reporter notebook and a minimum of four bags of Cheez-Its. Then I drive until the Cheez-Its run out (about two miles). Then I look for a school or college that has the following features:

800,000 candidate signs stuck into giant mounds of snow.

Nowhere legal to park because all of the legal parking spaces have been occupied by giant mounds of snow since October.

A demonstrator dressed as Frosty the Snowman to express concern about global warming.

These features indicate that there is a presidential campaign event going on. So I park illegally, brush off the Cheez-It dust and go inside, where I join the crowd of New Hampshire voters standing around listening to classic rock songs from the 60s and early 70s (required by federal election law) while we wait for the candidate to arrive and tell us that he or she is in favor of Change.

The ancient frozen dome cloaking Greenland is so vast that pilots have crashed into what they thought was a cloud bank spanning the horizon. Flying over it, you can scarcely imagine that this ice could erode fast enough to dangerously raise sea levels any time soon.

Most important, many glaciologists say, is the breakup of huge semisubmerged clots of ice where some large Greenland glaciers, particularly along the west coast, squeeze through fjords as they meet the warming ocean. As these passages have cleared, this has sharply accelerated the flow of many of these creeping, corrugated, frozen rivers.

All of these changes have many glaciologists ?a little nervous these days ? shell-shocked,? said Ted Scambos, the lead scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo., and a veteran of both Greenland and Antarctic studies.

Many nursing colleges now have wait lists for nursing students, due to the nursing instructor shortage. An online program will allow the potential student to start their studies sooner. The online college degree arena has allowed more accessibility, so many students who were not able to attend a campus based college program are now able to complete an advanced nursing degree through online or distance learning programs.

Vice and virtue clash daily round the world, and while the definition of sin may vary, its literary allure is universal. Perhaps that?s because no matter how easy we think moral failings are to finger, in actuality their elusiveness on the page is what makes for the stuff of great literature. ?It?s so easy to forget . . . ? says a former student of an envious teacher; yet do moral failings arise because it?s easy to forget, or because it?s even easier to harbor and remember? Maya Arad, Roberto Bolaño, Lars Saabye Christensen, Doris Kareva, Danilo Ki? , Mathieu Lindon, Sérgio Rodrigues, Kjell Westo, and Yan Lianke put envy, greed, pride, sloth, gluttony, anger, and lust to thought-provoking ends for the New Year.

Mike Huckabee wants to amend the Constitution to prevent children born in the U.S. to illegal aliens from automatically becoming American citizens, according to his top immigration surrogate ? a radical step no other major presidential candidate has embraced.

Mr. Huckabee, who won last week?s Republican Iowa caucuses, promised Minuteman Project founder James Gilchrist that he would force a test case to the Supreme Court to challenge birthright citizenship, and would push Congress to pass a 28th Amendment to the Constitution to remove any doubt.

It?s pretty obvious that the right, which knows all about Huckabee?s record on the issue, isn?t impressed. Take National Review?s Mark Levin, for example.

Huckabees Hard Turn Right

I think he realizes he now has to punish the children of illegal immigrants to win over the GOP base. One of his more admirable qualities in the race to the immigration bottom on the far right was his refusal to penalize kids. Well: that has now gone, according to the Washington Times.

Because pronouns, in English, belong to a closed word class it has been very difficult to add any neologisms. Thus, we are without a workable resolution.

    UU Minister Joins Army As A Chaplain

    After fourteen years as a Unitarian Universalist parish minister, the Rev. George Tyger has joined the U.S. Army.

    Tyger is the only UU chaplain on active duty in the Army and one of only a handful throughout the other military branches.

    ?One of the reasons I went into the army was to be a representative of our faith,? he said. ?There are many religious liberals in the military. But sadly, we have all but abandoned military chaplaincy. The result is that too many UUs and others have no one who can serve their needs in the military.?

    He added, ?UUs talk about diversity, but until they follow me around for a day they have no idea. We have officers who have gone to Ivy League schools and guys who grew up in South Boston who have GED degrees. There are Christians, atheists, Wiccans, everything you can think of. The chaplain is the one person they know everyone can go to.?

    Wearing Too Much Perfume May Indicate Depression

    Can?t smell the roses? Maybe you?re depressed. Smell too much like a rose yourself? Maybe you?ve got the same problem. Scientists from Tel Aviv University recently linked depression to a biological mechanism that affects the olfactory glands. It might explain why some women, without realizing it, wear too much perfume.

    Scientific research that supports this theory was published this year in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatism. ?Our scientific findings suggest that women who are depressed are also losing their sense of smell, and may overcompensate by using more perfume,? explains researcher Prof. Yehuda Shoenfeld, a member of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University. ?We also believe that depression has biological roots and may be an immune system response to certain physiological cues.?

    Darwins Failed Predictions, Slide 11: "Human evolution remains a mystery"

    In 1980, the famed late evolutionary paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould noted that, "[m]ost hominid fossils, even though they serve as a basis for endless speculation and elaborate storytelling, are fragments of jaws and scraps of skulls."1 PBS confidently asserts that our species, Homo sapiens, evolved from ape-like species, but the fossil record tells a different story. The fossil record contains two basic types of hominids: those that can be classified as ape-like and those that can be classified as modern human-like. But there remains a distinct break in the morphology of ape-like species and human-like species that is not bridged by our knowledge of the fossil record.

    What Makes a Terrorist

    It?s not poverty and lack of education, according to economic research by Princeton?s ALAN KRUEGER. Look elsewhere.

    A popular explanation was that economic deprivation and a lack of education caused people to adopt extreme views and turn to terrorism.

    Participation in terrorism is just a special application of the economics of occupational choice. Some people choose to become doctors or lawyers, and others pursue careers in terrorism. Economics can help us understand why.

    countries with fewer civil liberties and political rights were more likely to be the birthplaces of foreign insurgents

    The evidence suggests that terrorists care about influencing political outcomes. They are often motivated by geopolitical grievances.

    Most terrorists are not so desperately poor that they have nothing to live for. Instead, they are people who care so fervently about a cause that they are willing to die for it.

    The order by U.S. Magistrate Judge John Facciola comes amid an effort by the White House to scuttle two lawsuits that could force the Executive Office of the President to recover any e-mail that has disappeared from computer servers where electronic documents are automatically archived.

    In their lawsuits, the National Security Archive and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington suggest the e-mails were improperly deleted from White House computer servers. Over 5 million White House e-mails are missing, CREW alleged. Recently, the group said it has been told by reliable sources that the actual figure of missing e-mail is over 10 million.

    Nasa has announced details of a challenging mission to "rescue" the Hubble Space Telescope.

    Without the mission, the multi-billion dollar orbiting observatory is likely to fail in 2010 or 2011.

    The upgrade will provide a massive boost to Hubbles capabilities, giving it greater sensitivity and a larger field of view.

    The mission, by space shuttle Atlantis, will make Hubble 90 times more powerful than its original version.

    It could also extend the telescopes lifetime by more than a decade.

    The mission was outlined at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Austin, Texas.

    "It will be a totally new machine."

    Whereas Hubbles original incarnation could only see 10 galaxies at a time, this one would be able to see 900.

    The upgrade mission, the fifth and final flight to fix Hubble, is scheduled to launch in August 2008, although that date is now in doubt.

    The Hubble repair mission will have to wait for two higher priority shuttle launches before it can go ahead.

    Killing consumers for the almighty dollar

    Companies dont take responsibility for their actions any more ? except when they fear that sales might be affected if they dont. Even when they do get caught committing fraud, they often show no true signs of remorse. Rather than take full responsibility, they downplay their role or make up excuses.

    Consider the serious fraud of the Purdue Frederick Company, Inc., the maker of a very powerful prescription drug called Oxycontin.

    Corporate executives at Purdue Frederick were delighted to discover that the drug worked wonders in relieving pain. But there was a dark side; Oxycontin was terribly addicting. Even taken in small doses, for short periods of time, it could turn average Americans into helpless addicts.

    Its a classic example of the old saying: "The cure was worse than the disease." Most people would immediately refuse to take such a horribly addictive drug, especially when there are so many other, less hazardous, painkillers on the market.

And if we remember that our identity and our freedom lie in the intersection between our impersonal but unique bodies and our personal individual memories and shared cultural awareness, it is difficult to worry about the erosion of either our identity or our freedom by technological advance

    There is increasing concern amongst a wide range of commentators that human nature is in the process of being irrevocably changed by technological advances which either have been achieved or are in the pipeline. According to a multitude of op-ed writers, cultural critics, social scientists and philosophers, we have not faced up to the grave implications of what is happening. We are sleep-walking and need to wake up. Human life is being so radically transformed that our very essence as human beings is under threat.

    Of course, apocalypse sells product, and one should not regard the epidemiology of panic as a guide to social or any other kind of reality. The fact that one of the most quoted panickers about the future is Francis Fukuyama, who has got both the past wrong (The End of History) and the present wrong (recovered neo-con Pentagon hawk), should itself be reassurance enough.

    Each January the Met Office, in conjunction with the University of East Anglia, issues a forecast of the global surface temperature for the coming year. The forecast takes into account known contributing factors, such as El Niño and La Niña, increasing greenhouse gas concentrations, the cooling influences of industrial aerosol particles, solar effects and natural variations of the oceans.

    Global temperature for 2008 is expected to be 0.37 °C above the long-term (1961-1990) average of 14.0 °C, the coolest year since 2000, when the value was 0.24 °C.

    clippers remarks: Chicagos 5-cent tax on bottled water took effect on Jan. 2, 2008. The tax is expected to bring an extra $10.5 million annually into the citys coffers while encouraging people to drink tap water and eschew the environmentally suspect bottles.

    Illinois residents consumed 270 million gallons of bottled water in 2005, making the state the seventh-biggest bottled water consumer in the United States.

    The Earth Policy Institute estimates manufacturers use more than 17 million barrels of oil in making polyethylene terephthalate plastic bottles. Only 23 percent of those bottles are is recycled, according to the Container Recycling Institute. The rest are tossed into landfills.
    pile of plastic bottled water bottles

    Sin taxes have always been the most palatable of fees to voters who hate taxes

    Welcome to the era of the eco-sin tax

    Chicago is the first major U.S. city to tax bottled water

    seven sins of bottled water

    are these:

    Plastic bottles are made from petroleum

    The bottles often go into the trash, rather than the recycle bin (in part because many states dont offer five-cent deposits to encourage recycling, as they do on soda and beer cans and bottles).

    water is pumped far from where it is sold, creating needless pollution as trucks and barges transport it across the country

    water underground or flowing from natural springs is publicly owned and should not be exploited for profit

    Bottled water is rarely as closely monitored as tap water.

    Tap water in the United States, when provided by a municipal system, is the most highly monitored and safe supply in the world.

    Some of the water sold in little plastic bottles is tap water, but it costs an awful lot more per gallon.

    So much also for the "inevitable" or "invincible" candidacy of Hillary Clinton. Perhaps the biggest story out of Iowa is that 71 percent of Democrats voted against Hillary.

    As for the Republicans, Mike Huckabee won by 8 percentage points in a state where 60 percent of the Republican voters were evangelicals.

    However surprising his victory, it was not massive by any means and the large evangelical factor will not be there in most other states, even among Republican voters-- much less in the general election in November.

    There are fewer reasons for misgivings about Fred Thompsons track record in the Senate but more reason to be concerned about what his unfocused and lackluster conduct of his campaign might portend for his performance in the White House.

    When it comes to personal temperament, Governor Romney would rate the highest for his even keel, regardless of what events are swirling around him, with Rudolph Giuliani a close second.

    Temperament is far more important for a President than for a candidate. A President has to be on an even keel 24/7, for four long years, despite crises that can break out anywhere in the world at any time.

    John McCain trails the pack in the temperament department, with his volatile, arrogant, and abrasive know-it-all attitude. His track record in the Senate is full of the betrayals of Republican supporters that have been the partys biggest failing over the years and its Achilles heel politically.

    McCains betrayals include not only the amnesty bill but also the McCain-Feingold bill that violated the First Amendment for the illusion of "taking money out of politics." His back-door deal with Democrats on judicial nominations also pulled the rug out from under his party leaders in the Senate.

    For Cancer Patients, Empathy Goes a Long Way

    Four years ago, my sister found out she had two types of cancer at the same time. It was like being hit by lightning ? twice.

    A lot of her hair fell out. The radiation burned her skin. Bony, red-eyed, weak and frightfully pale, she tied scarves on her head, plastered her fingers with Band-Aids

    She saw two doctors quite often. The radiation oncologist would sling her arm around my sister?s frail shoulders and walk her down the corridor as if they were old friends.

    Authorities searched Wednesday for the bodies of four children believed to have been thrown off a bridge by their father.

    Lam Luong, 37, of Irvington confessed Tuesday night to driving to the Dauphin Island bridge, stopping and tossing the youngsters off the span, which is as high as 80 feet above the water in places, Detective Scott Riva said. Luong faced charges of four counts of capital murder and was due in court Wednesday, Riva said.

    Missing and presumed dead were 4-month-old Danny Luong; 1-year-old Lindsey Luong; 2-year-old Hannah Luong; and 3-year-old Ryan Phan. Phan is not the mans biological child, but Luong raised him from infancy, authorities said.

    "Its been a nightmare," said Riva.

    Sexually active gay men no longer allowed to donate organs

    Last Updated: Monday, January 7, 2008 | 10:08 PM ET

    A number of organ donation groups said Monday that they are unaware of new Health Canada regulations that mean sexually active gay men, injection drug users and other groups considered high risk will no longer be accepted as organ donors.

    The new rules, which came into effect in December, are similar to the regulations for determining who can donate blood. Those rules exclude groups that are at high risk of transmitting infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C and B.

    Officials at several transplant programs in the country said because they were unaware of the new regulations, they would continue to consider all potential donor organs.

    Dr. Gary Levy, who heads Canadas largest organ transplant program at Torontos University Health Network, said he was unaware of the new policy on organ donations.

  • A kiss begins to sexually stimulate a man instantly.

  • If you arenâ??t kissing then you wonâ??t become tempted to take things to a more intimate level. Youâ??ll be protecting yourself and the purity of your date.

  • If a Christian man is kissing his date and it gives him an erection (often just the possibility of a kiss can do this), is God or his date being honored?

  • Is this healthy for the man to get sexually aroused time after time without sexual release? When men become sexually aroused a large amount of blood flows to the genitals. If ejaculation does not occur; the build up of blood can become painful. That just cant be a good thing for anyone! Ouch! :O)

  • A kiss will surely break down your barriers and leave you in a position that could ultimately devastate your relationship with your date and separate you from a close walk with God. Self-control seems to be the better option.

    Solar rays can help protect against some cancers and heart disease, say scientists

    It has been the common wisdom for decades and the mantra of the pale and pasty who would rather not get hot and bothered: stay out of the sun to avoid getting skin cancer. If you must go out, slap on the sunscreen or cover up.

    But that advice might need some reconsideration: a study suggests that the health benefits of vitamin D, which is produced by the skin when it is exposed to sunshine, could justify a modest increase in the amount of time we spend in the sun. "Since vitamin D has been shown to play a protective role in a number of internal cancers and possibly a range of other diseases, it is important to study the relative risks to determine whether advice to avoid sun exposure may be causing more harm than good in some populations," said Richard Setlow, a biophysicist at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in the US and an expert on the link between solar radiation and skin cancer.

    I wasnt too convinced of President Bushs ambition

    Clip Source: www.cauldwell.net

    This came up at work this week, so I thought Id disgorge my views on the issue.  The question at hand is whether or not every method needs to validate its input parameters.
    For example, if I have a method

        public class Example

        {

            public int DoThingy(SomeObject obj)

            {

                return obj.GetImportantValue();

            }

        }

    This method depends on the value of obj not being null.  If a caller passes a null, the framework will, on my behalf, throw a NullReferenceException.  Is that OK?  Sometimes it might be, and well come back to that.
    The alternative is for me to validate my input parameters thusly:

            public int DoThingy(SomeObject obj)

            {

                if (obj == null)

                    throw new ArgumentNullException("obj");

                return obj.GetImportantValue();

            }

    The discussion we got into was wether this was really necessary or not

    FEC Reduced to Offering Advice

    Without a Quorum, Rulings on Campaigns Are Nonbinding

    Down to two members and unable to muster a quorum, the Federal Election Commission has decided to offer advice instead of binding decisions on questions from political campaigns.

    This week, organizations with pending requests for decisions from the six-member FEC on campaign matters received phone calls from agency staffers letting them know not to expect formal rulings anytime soon.

    The groups were told that the FECs two remaining members will hold a public hearing Jan. 24 to share their informal views on the requests. The board lacks the four votes needed for the commission to take official action on a number of matters, including enforcement cases.

    Contested cases from late last year -- those that resulted in disagreement among FEC board members -- are in limbo, Mason said. And more of them are stacking up every day.

    Dog saves boy from fire by biting foot

    PORTAGE, Ind. - A black Labrador that bit a 13-year-old boys foot repeatedly, waking him up, is being credited with saving the boy and two of his friends from a house fire. Christopher Peebles said he woke up Friday morning to feel his dog Laney biting his foot repeatedly in the basement of his familys home, where he and two friends had spent the night.

    "I thought she had to go to the bathroom, but she never bites me," Peebles said Friday.

    He and his friends walked upstairs with Laney and noticed smoke everywhere in the home.

    "We came up the stairs and thought it was a dream, but it was cold when we opened the door ? then we knew it wasnt a dream," Pebbles said.

    Firefighters arrived about 10 a.m. and found the homes garage and eaves on fire. Assistant Fire Chief Mike Bucy said the damage was mostly in the attached one-car garage of the ranch home.

    ?US inventories are now at a three-year low. This is prompting some analysts to call for the Energy Department to stop putting oil into the nations Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) so the oil instead can be used in the marketplace.

    ?Trouble is brewing in the Nigerian oil patch. Hope that Nigerias politicians could smooth over problems in sharing the oil wealth are fading amid reports of continued unrest and possible future attacks on the oil infrastructure, analysts say.

    ?Nervous investors are continuing to pump money into commodities, such as gold, silver, and oil, which drives up their prices. A weak dollar also tends to drive up oil prices.

    The novel control method was introduced after traditional measures, such as fences and repellents failed to keep the animals away.

    In the past pilots using Bari airport - including low cost carriers Ryanair - have complained of problems caused during take off and landings because of the foxes and hares and several times the airport has been forced to close as a result.

    Cheyenne, who has an impressive 7ft 6in wing span is the only eagle in use for pest control in Europe, officials turned to one of the worlds prodigious hunters.

    And the six-month-old bird reared in Germany can lift 40lb - almost three times her body weight - has imposed a unique shadow over the airport and its surrounding woodland where terrified foxes now hide.

    she will spread enough fear to ensure the animals stay the right side of the perimeter fence, particularly when their cubs arrive in a few months time.

    Two vets didnt know what was wrong with her.

    My kids were crying themselves to sleep. The vet told me my choices were to take the puppy over the Michigan State Vet Clinic, or put her down.

    I just couldnt do it, so I searched the Internet for everything I could find. The vet called me and said he was thinking Bacterial Mennigitis and wanted to do massive antibiotics during the night. I just said to him "Give her Prednisone". He was stunned. He said "You are not a Vet!"

    Well since we were going to put her down, I took my chances and cried myself to sleep.

    Launching the National Year of Reading campaign, they said research showed nearly half of adults had read at least five books in the previous 12 months.

    Her completed map was rejected by publishers, so she ran off 10,000 copies and sold them to WH Smith. Pearsall chose the name A-Z from the index

    Is Mark Lilla right about religion?

    the cover of America, the Catholic magazine

    Lilla argues that the Enlightenment made a radical break between religion and politics that haunts us till this day. For millennia, there had been a generally accepted pattern of meaning across cultures linking the cosmic order, the political system and the individual soul, in which political order was dictated by revelation. The one exception to that linkage is the modern secular West. There, following the wars of religion, Thomas Hobbes achieved a ?Great Separation? by making religion the projection of a fear-filled individual psychology and government the instrument of human desire.

    Dear Drew,

    You are absolutely right that Lillas construction of a "great separation" is based on a misleading contrast between theocratic political theology and secular political philosophy. This is purely an analytical device, which Lilla superimposes upon real history.

    Mr. Korte was a co-founder of the born-again organization in 2006, as a senior at Stonington High School, in Connecticut. S.D.S. now has around 120 active chapters and 3,000 registered members.

        "We know the drive for revolutionary change is correct," Mr. Korte says, "but blowing up buildings is not going to get us anywhere. Nor is joining the Democratic Party."

    The groups growth has surprised everyone involved, particularly former members who wondered why students would want to model themselves on an organization that ultimately self-destructed. The original S.D.S. became a major force in the opposition to the Vietnam War

    Members cite three events - 9/11, the Iraq war and Hurricane Katrina - in describing what brought them to S.D.S.

    New Health Care Ad: Every American Deserves CheneyCare

    Click for larger version

    The California Nurses Association and the National Nurses Organizing Committee launch a new ad campaign in eight New Hampshire papers.

    Last month, the California Nurses Association and the National Nurses Organizing Committee ran ads in Iowa newspapers advocating for a single-payer health-care bill, highlighting the fact Vice President Dick Cheney has benefited from his government-provided coverage. "If he were anyone else, hed probably be dead by now" due to his long history of health problems, claimed the ad.

    As ThinkProgress noted at the time, what is actually outrageous is the fact that there are roughly 47 million people in America without health insurance, including 3.2 million children, but President Bush twice vetoed legislation that would have expanded coverage to 4 million more children.

    Americans do deserve "CheneyCare for all."

    CIA whistleblower Agee dies

    clippers remarks: Exposed CIA subversion in Latin America in 1975

    HAVANA - Philip Agee, a former CIA spy who exposed its undercover operations in Latin America in a 1975 book, died in Havana, the Cuban Communist Party newspaper Granma said on Wednesday.0109 09

    Agee said working as a case officer in South America opened his eyes to the CIA?s Cold War goal in the region: to prop up traditional elites against perceived leftist threats through political repression and torture.

    ?It was a time in the 70s when the worst imaginable horrors were going on in Latin America ? Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Guatemala, El Salvador ? they were military dictatorships with death squads, all with the backing of the CIA and the U.S. government,? he wrote.

    Ex-CIA Agent Philip Agee Dead in Cuba

    HAVANA - Former CIA agent Philip Agee, a critic of U.S. foreign policy who infuriated American intelligence officials by naming purported agency operatives in a 1975 book, has died, state media reported Wednesday. He was 72.

    Agees actions in the 1970s inspired a law criminalizing the exposure of covert U.S. operatives.

    But in 2003, he drew a distinction between what he did and the exposure of CIA officer Valerie Plame, the wife of former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV, a prominent critic of President Bushs Iraq policy.

    "This is entirely different than what I was doing in the 1970s," Agee said. "This is purely dirty politics in my opinion."

    Agee said that in his case, he disclosed the identities of his former CIA colleagues to "weaken the instrument for carrying out the policy of supporting military dictatorships" in Greece, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil.

    Since at least 1978, Ron Paul has attached his name to a series of newsletters

    that frequently made outrageous statements:

    This newsletter describes Martin Luther King Jr. as "a world-class adulterer" who "seduced underage girls and boys" and "replaced the evil of forced segregation with the evil of forced integration."

    The January 1991 edition of the Political Report refers to King as a "world-class philanderer who beat up his paramours" and a "flagrant plagiarist with a phony doctorate."

    A February 1991 newsletter attacks "The X-Rated Martin Luther King."

    An October 1990 edition of the Political Report ridicules black activists, led by Al Sharpton, for demonstrating at the Statue of Liberty in favor of renaming New York City after Martin Luther King. The newsletter suggests that "Welfaria," "Zooville," "Rapetown," "Dirtburg," and "Lazyopolis" would be better alternatives--and says, "Next time, hold that demonstration at a food stamp bureau or a crack house."

    Upgraded Hubble telescope to be 90 times as powerful

    clippers remarks: Maybe we will be able to see what is on the other side of that galaxy.

    Space shuttle astronauts will attempt an unprecedented in-orbit repair of key Hubble Space Telescope (HST) instruments during the servicing mission scheduled for August 2008. The repairs, along with the addition of two new instruments, will make Hubble 90 times as powerful as it was after its flawed optics were corrected in 1993.

    In October 2006, NASA announced plans to carry out a fourth and final servicing mission for Hubble, in which it would install two new scientific instruments and replace the observatorys batteries and gyroscopes. But previously the agency has not said whether it would attempt a difficult repair of two key instruments that have broken down in recent years.

    Media Wont Drop Out, In Race for Long Haul

    (2008-01-09) ? Despite embarrassing finishes in Iowa and New Hampshire, the mainstream media (MSM) today dismissed talk of an early withdrawal from the presidential race, saying political correspondents and pollsters are ?in it for the long haul.?

    The unnamed MSM spokesperson blinked back tears as she described the difficulty of predicting election outcomes, not to mention the hardship of life on the road and the stress of waiting for the next gaffe or personal attack from a candidate.

    ?It?s hard,? the MSM source said, ?because we passionately want to take the country back to the days when we controlled the message and the distribution channels.?

    Man hacked to pieces, flushed down the toilet

    A WOMAN in Germany put an end to her troubled marriage by chopping up her husband and flushing parts of him down the toilet, authorities said .

    "You wont find him, Ive flushed him down the toilet, is what she told (her children)," Dusseldorf police spokesman Andre Hartwich said.

    The children, who reported their father missing before Christmas, told police the marriage was "steeped in hatred" and that the woman had previously attempted to poison her husband.

    It was not clear exactly how the man died.

    The Macedonian-born wife threw the biggest chunks of her husband into a bin, which was later emptied at an incineration plant, police said.

    Investigators have so far only found traces of the 58-year-old taxi drivers blood in the toilet. The 52-year-old woman fled to Macedonia after the killing.

    German authorities are now pursuing her extradition.

    Pope Benedict XVI: Prayer for Molesters & Rapists

    Pope Benedict XVI in Loreto, Italy

    Church leaders at the Vatican said each parish or diocese shall designate a person or group to conduct daily and continuous prayer services to cleanse the church of the scandal.

    Vatican officials said the order appends support for legal action targeting sexually abusive priests and a code to prevent men "with deep-seated homosexual tendencies" from entering the priesthood.

    Source: UPI (via Bligbi)

    Whats notably absent from this is any sort of punishment or consequences for priests who abuse children. Theres a "code" to keep gays out of the priesthood, but its a well-known fact that child abuse is not committed exclusively by gays. This suggests that the abuse of children is being used as an excuse to go after gays in the church, but not as a reason to protect future children from abusive priests. Pope Benedict may "support" legal action by civil authorities, but what about decisive action within the church itself?

    Business Plot

    The Business Plot, the Plot Against FDR, or the White House Putsch, was a conspiracy involving several wealthy businessmen to overthrow the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933.

    General Butler claimed that the American Liberty League was the primary means of funding the plot. The main backers were the Du Pont family, as well as leaders of U.S. Steel, General Motors, Standard Oil, Chase National Bank, and Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. A BBC documentary claims Prescott Bush, father and grandfather to the 41st and 43rd US Presidents respectively, was also connected.[3]

    Oz crematorium menaced by exploding dog

    Were very much obliged to Ozs ABC News this morning for clarifying something which has been bothering us for some time: do frozen dogs present an explosion risk?

    The answer is a chilling yes, as proved by the case of the Darwin pet crematorium which last night got an unscheduled visit from three fire trucks and police after "a passing motorist reported the premises were on fire".

    In fact, the facilitys chimney was ablaze, and once the authorities "confirmed flames were coming out of the flue", they called the owner.

    ABCs report splendidly concludes: "He revealed that a frozen dead dog in the furnace was the cause of the overheating chimney, as frozen dogs sometimes explode when cremated."

    The final outcome of the exploding frozen dog incident is not noted, and we are unable to provide details on the breed. ®
