the spectator sport China DOESNT want you to see

clipped by:michellezm
Clip Source: www.dailymail.co.uk

It could have been a happy scene from a family zoo anywhere in the world but for what happened next.

A man hoisted up the goat and nonchalantly threw it over a wall into a pit full of hungry lions. The poor goat tried to run for its life, but it didnt stand a chance. The lions quickly surrounded it and started tearing at its flesh.

The scenes witnessed at Badaltearing Safari Park in China are rapidly becoming a normal day out for many Chinese families.

Baying crowds now gather in zoos across the country to watch animals being torn to pieces by lions and tigers.

Just an hours drive from the main Olympic attractions in Beijing, Badaling is in many ways a typical Chinese zoo.

Next to the main slaughter arena is a restaurant where families can dine on braised dog while watching cows and goats being disembowelled by lions.

The zoo also encourages visitors to "fish" for lions using live chickens as bait.

"In China, if you love animals you want to kill yourself every day out of despair."

"Cant We Talk?" (condensed from: You Just Dont Understand)

by Deborah Tannen

A married couple was in a car when the wife turned to her husband and asked, "Would you like to stop for a coffee?"

"No, thanks," he answered truthfully. So they didnt stop.

The result? The wife, who had indeed wanted to stop, became annoyed because she felt her preference had not been considered. The husband, seeing his wife was angry, became frustrated. Why didnt she just say what she wanted?

Unfortunately, he failed to see that his wife was asking the question not to get an instant decision, but to begin a negotiation. And the woman didnt realize that when her husband said no, he was just expressing his preference, not making a ruling. When a man and woman interpret the same interchange in such conflicting ways, its no wonder they can find themselves leveling angry charges of selfishness and obstinacy at each other.

Gorilla

Stand-off: The jungle giant, joined by a younger member of its family, looks down warily as the visitors smile and take pictures

Gorilla

Sulky: The male momentarily turns away, with a look that says hes not too happy

Gorilla

Scarey: Suddenly, the silverback rears up and pounds his chest with his huge fists

Confucius Quotes

By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.

Do not be desirous of having things done quickly. Do not look at small advantages. Desire to have things done quickly prevents their being done thoroughly. Looking at small advantages prevents great affairs from being accomplished.

A superior man is modest in his speech, but exceeds in his actions.

If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed; if in terms of ten years, plant trees; if in terms of 100 years, teach the people.

I hear and I forget. I see and I believe. I do and I understand.

If you shoot for the stars and hit the moon, it?s OK. But you?ve got to shoot for something. A lot of people don?t even shoot.

Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall.

Recipe to head off the worst effects of global warming

Heres a recipe to head off the worst effects of global warming:

1. Start with 30 new nuclear power plants around the world.

2. Add 17,0000 wind turbines, 400 biomass power plants, two hydroelectric dams the size of Chinas Three Gorges Dam, and 42 coal or natural gas power plants equipped with still-experimental systems to sequester their carbon dioxide emissions underground.

3. Build everything in 2013. Repeat every year until 2030.

As delegates from 190 countries gather here on the Indonesian island of Bali to negotiate a "road map" for the successor to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol on global warming, some experts are wondering whether the meeting has lost touch with the reality of tackling climate change.

But while the debate continues, the most fundamental question of what it will take to achieve meaningful reductions has gone largely forgotten.

The Groovy Column Where Hillary Answers All Your Tough Questions

Dear Hillary, If you become President, I would like to become good friends with you. I have no ulterior motives whatsoever other than promoting a lasting friendship between the citizens of the United States and China. And if our peaceful peoople can get access to sensitive missile technologies along the way, so much the better! As you know, we have access to vast amounts of money and resources. We look forward to building our relationship with you!

Sincerely, General Zhu Chenghu

Hillary answers: Dear General Zhu, so lovely to hear from you! My personal take is that for a friendship to flourish, it requires a commitment by both parties involved. In your case, nothing says commitment like a $1 million check made out to the Democratic National Committee, through whatever........

Cheerio! Hillary
Dear Hillary, My husband is a very wealthy criminal philanthropist who had to flee the country due to some misunderstandings about certain "illegal" contracts with various foreign governments. I desperately want to see my husband again. What should I do?

Sincerely, Denise

Hillary answers: Dear Denise, If Im elected President, I pledge to fight injustices like this one, even if it takes issuing a pardon for your husband. My recommendation is a $500,000 contribution to the DNC and a $1 million contribution to my husbands Presidential Library and Disco Lounge. Not that theres any sort of quid pro quo, of course. Because that would be illegal.

Kisses, Hillary

Dear Hillary, My husband went to prison when he was wrongly convicted of being one of three men who violently assaulted two females. He is an innocent man and was sentenced to 130 years! Now, we think there is new DNA evidence that will prove he was not one of the three men involved in the crime. We dont have any money

The butterflies deposit their larvae on marsh gentian plants where exploring ants find them, identify the chemical coating, and take the butterfly larvae back to the ant colony and feed them until they grow up and leave, the researchers report in Thursdays edition of the journal Science.

The researchers, led by David R. Nash of

the University of Copenhagen, added that elsewhere in Europe the Alcon butterfly uses a different ant species to raise its young.

Deep-Sea Species Loss Could Lead To Oceans Collapse

clipped by:JICWyllie
Clip Source: www.terradaily.com
The loss of deep-sea species poses a severe threat to the future of the oceans,

In a global-scale study, the researchers found some of the first evidence that the health of the deep sea, as measured by the rate of critical ecosystem processes, increases exponentially with the diversity of species living there.

"This shows that we need to preserve biodiversity, and especially deep-sea biodiversity, because otherwise the negative consequences could be unprecedented. We must care about species that are far from us and [essentially] invisible."

Recent investigations on land have suggested that biodiversity loss might impair the functioning and sustainability of ecosystems

However, the data needed to evaluate the consequences of biodiversity loss on the ocean floor had been completely lacking,

They found that sites with a higher diversity of nematodes support exponentially higher rates of ecosystem processes and an increased efficiency with which those processes are performed.

Whats notable about these laws is they affect an entire state electorate, while the problems provoking their adoption almost always concern a handful of individuals. That disparity has led many voting rights advocates to say these laws are meant to discourage Democratic voters.

In 1984 and again in 1999, the National Academy of Sciences, the nation?s most eminent scientific organization, produced books on the evidence supporting the theory of evolution and arguing against the introduction of creationism or other religious alternatives in public school science classes.

On Thursday, it produced a third. But this volume is unusual, people who worked on it say, because it is intended specifically for the lay public and because it devotes much of its space to explaining the differences between science and religion, and asserting that acceptance of evolution does not require abandoning belief in God.

?We wanted to produce a report that would be valuable and accessible to school board members and teachers and clergy,? said Barbara A. Schaal

The 70-page book, ?Science, Evolution and Creationism,? says, among other things, that ?attempts to pit science and religion against each other create controversy where none needs to exist.?

Its hard to predict a mere century from now, because what will happen depends on us ? this is the first century where humans can collectively transform, or even ravage, the entire biosphere. Humanity will soon itself be malleable, to an extent thats qualitatively new in the history of our species. New drugs (and perhaps even implants into our brains) could change human character; the cyberworld has potential that is both exhilarating and frightening. We cant confidently guess lifestyles, attitudes, social structures, or population sizes a century hence. Indeed, its not even clear for how long our descendants would remain distinctively human.

Darwin himself noted that "not one living species will transmit its unaltered likeness to a distant futurity"

Contaminated Temperature Data

clipped by: amgumen
The problem remains one of determining what part of a given temperature trend is climatically real and what part the result of observational difficulties and of artificial modification of the local environment

data inhomogeneities (such as station moves and closure, record discontinuities, equipment change and changes to the time of observation) are known to have affected records of mean temperature. Modification of the land surface, including urbanization and other economic activity, has been shown to affect local, regional and possibly global meteorology

examined the gridded temperature dataset used by the IPCC

Lowering Sea Level Rise

clipped by: amgumen
A key question is not whether sea level is rising, but rather, has there been any acceleration in the rise

Determining GSLR rates is complicated by non-tidal, year-to-year variability in local mean sea level that is one to two orders of magnitude greater than the long-term trend, potentially masking changes in the rate of rise. The cause of this variability is largely unknown, although it has been linked to storms, winds and floods, wind driven Rossby waves, shifts in major ocean currents such as the Gulf Stream, volcanically induced ocean heat content variations, and in the Pacific Ocean, the El Nino Southern Oscillation

meteorological processes drive coastal sea-level variability by redistributing water, heat, and the response of the ocean to atmospheric pressure across the ocean basin

The corrected data are in red and while the regression outputs of this data are in black

their research yields a global sea level rise near 1.1 mm per year which is well below IPCC and other estimates

Automobile Fuel Economy

clipped by: mklosinski
Clip Source: www.aynrand.org
The energy bill that President Bush just signed into law is a significant victory for environmentalists

"Compelling automakers to achieve higher mileage forces them to compromise automobile safety. To achieve fuel economy, they are forced to make vehicles lighter and smaller. But lighter, smaller vehicles are much more dangerous in an accident. Because the car absorbs less of the crash impact, the passengers absorb it instead.

"The original Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, imposed in 1975, have already led to a substantial increase in traffic fatalities--an additional two thousand traffic deaths per year, according to a 2002 study

it is far from a settled scientific fact that we face catastrophic dangers from climate change. Yet, under the guise of protecting us from the alleged dangers of global warming, environmentalists force upon us the very real, provable dangers of increased auto injuries and deaths. Clearly, what they value is something other than human well-being."

U.S. Middle School Math Teachers Are Ill-prepared Among International Counterparts

clipped by: allenmarkowski

A new study funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) found that middle school mathematics teachers in the United States are not as well prepared to teach this challenging subject as are many of their counterparts in five other countries.

"Our future teachers are getting weak training mathematically and are just not prepared to teach the demanding mathematics curriculum we need for middle schools if we hope to compete internationally in the future," said William Schmidt

This inadequate teacher preparation joins deficiencies in mathematics curriculum as reasons contributing to lower scores for American middle-schoolers.

"Whats most disturbing is that one of the areas in which U.S. future teachers tend to do the worst is algebra, and algebra is the heart of middle school math,"

"We must address this,"

"We can make our mathematics curriculum more demanding, instead of a mile wide and an inch deep, but we also need teachers that are well prepared to teach it to all children."

Driven Out: The Forgotten War Against Chinese Americans,? she tells the story of the ?thousands of Chinese people who were violently herded onto railroad cars, steamers or logging rafts, marched out of town or killed,? from the Pacific coast to the Rocky Mountains

An engraving of an anti-Chinese riot in Denver in 1880.

Chinese immigrants filed more than 7,000 lawsuits in the decade after the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, ?and they won the vast majority of them

some white Westerners championed the Chinese in their assertion of rights

Whites saw in Chinese workers precisely what they hated about their own lives: hard and underpaid work, long hours, poor living conditions and a dearth of women

white workers made the Chinese their scapegoats because of the similarities, rather than the differences, between them

The Chinese brought these suits as part of a strategy of forcing a nation to obey its own laws

This always struck me as quaint since both religions (Christianity and Islam) share a common Abrahamic tradition. What they mean to infer is the different ways in which the two religions view the biblical Jesus.
In the name of Allah, God of everyone

I used to say to my Western friends, "In Indonesia Christians worship Allah!"

They would often be surprised, as if they had never imagined Christians could worship Allah.

In the West, I have found the word Allah is used to refer to the Islamic God. This God is further mistaken to be a different God than the God worshiped by Christians.

Of course educated people know this is not the case, but the average Western news consumer could be forgiven if they were to make such a mistake.

Historically, Christianity arrived in Indonesia after Islam, so in terms of language, Indonesian Christianity borrows heavily from Islam. In Indonesia, Christians refer to God as Allah, and the biblical Temple of Jerusalem is called Baitallah. Jesus is called Al Masih and the disciples are called Rasul-Rasul. The "daily bread" in the Lords Prayer is translated as rezeki by Roman Catholics here.

When I last visited rural Sind, more than half a million Hindus, Sikhs, Shia and Sunni Muslims rubbed shoulders to dance the head-whirling dhamal, smoke hashish and pray in front of the tomb of the Sufi saint Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. Benazir had contributed funds to the shrines renovation.

Benazir had a strong attachment to mysticism. As she arrived back from exile, her right arm was wrapped in amulets intended to ward off evil. In her final weeks she looked supernaturally elated. I was not sure whether she had accepted her fate or believed in her own invincibility.

With its shrine worship, tolerance and cavalier regard for monotheism, the Sufi business is not much admired by orthodox Saudi-influenced mullahs.

A pie-eyed secretary to a Pir (a hereditary saint) served our party green whisky. "It will help you reach the infinity," he said. My notebook, mostly made illegible by the sweat of dancing, still smells of perfumed water and petals.

"Tribal violence spirals in Kenya," screams the front page banner in the International Herald Tribune. "Kenya plunges into interethnic violence," says Le Monde.

A more complete headline might be: "Tribal differences in Kenya, normally accepted peacefully, are exploited by politicians hungry for power who can manipulate poverty-stricken population."

The reality of life on the worlds poorest continent is that most people live a marginal economic existence and rely enormously, for survival, on those nearest to them.

Rural villagers rely on each other, for example, to bring in the crop, or to share food in difficult times.

Urban dwellers often organise themselves to provide common services like schools because their governments are either too poor or too incompetent to deliver.

In these circumstances the people nearest to you - whom you can trust - are first, family, and second, tribe.

The female suicide attacks come as U.S.-led coalition forces are increasingly catching militants suspected of training women to become human bombs or finding evidence of efforts by al-Qaida in Iraq to recruit women, according to military records.

A computer consultant driving a rental car drove onto train tracks Wednesday using the instructions his GPS unit gave him. A train was barreling toward him, but he escaped in time and no one was injured

The driver had turned right, as the system advised, and the car somehow got stuck on the tracks at the crossing. He jumped out and tried to warn the engineer by waving. He got out of the way just before the train slammed into the car at 60 mph, Metro-North railroad spokesman Dan Brucker said Thursday.

Some 500 train passengers were stranded for more than two hours during the Wednesday evening rush hour. The accident also heavily damaged 250 feet of rail, Brucker said.

The railroad said that the driver was issued a minor summons for obstructing a railroad crossing and that he and his rental company would be liable for the damage, estimated in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination are omnipotent. The slogan ?press on? has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.

People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. When you figure out which it is, you will know exactly what to do.

When people come into your life for a SEASON, it is because your turn has come to share, grow, or learn. They may bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it! It is real! But, only for a season

LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons; those things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person or people involved; and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships, and areas of your life. It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant.

Let His presence settle into your bones,
and allow your soul the freedom to sing,
dance, and to bask in the sun.
It is there for each and every one of you.

Why We Gossip: Because Grooming Takes Too Long

    clipped by: wildcat
clippers remarks: Gossiping might be part of human nature, but we are not born gossiping
    Clip Source: www.livescience.com
My niece and I have a favorite pastime. We buy a stack of the trashiest celebrity gossip magazines, sprawl out on the floor with some chocolate close at hand and discuss each photograph, headline and story. We have very strong opinions about these stars, people we don?t even know, and never will.

Why is this such a satisfying way to spend a Friday night?

Because we might just be evolutionarily designed to judge and talk about others.

There are a million ways to categorize conversation among people. We greet each other and say goodbye, explain, inform, lie, tell secrets, comfort with words and tattle tale. But mostly, we like to talk about other people.

    Better than grooming

Such casual chat is just that until it turns malicious, unkind and secretive, a special packet of information to be passed from one person to the next with the intent to harm. And often with no basis in fact.

Gossip, or talk about each other, then replaced grooming as a social glue among humans.

    Teach your kids!

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Scientific advisers to the government emphasize in a report the importance of teaching evolution in public schools.

The report by the National Academy of Sciences and its Institute of Medicine follows up on similar past publications, the last of which came out in 1999. The new document includes recently discovered evidence supporting evolution, including an important fossil find.

The report released Thursday also takes swipes at creationism and other anti-evolution views.

"Despite the lack of scientific evidence for creationist positions, some advocates continue to demand that various forms of creationism be taught together with or in place of evolution in science classes," the report says.

Intelligent design holds that the universes order and complexity are so great that evolution cannot explain it.

    Clip Source: en.wikipedia.org

A Boltzmann brain is a hypothesized self-aware entity which arises due to random fluctuations out of some future state of chaos. The idea is named for physicist Ludwig Boltzmann, who had advanced an idea that the known universe arose as a random fluctuation, similar to process through which Boltzmann brains might arise.

    [edit] Boltzmann brain paradox

Boltzmann brains are often referred to in the context of the "Boltzmann brain paradox" or "problem".

The concept arises from the need to explain why we observe such a large degree of organization in the universe. The second law of thermodynamics states that the entropy in the universe will always increase. We may think of the most likely state of the universe as one of high entropy, closer to uniform and without order. So why is the observed entropy so low?

Boltzmann proposed that we and our observed low-entropy world are a random fluctuation in a higher-entropy universe

Caterpillars of the alcon blue butterfly have developed an outer coat that tricks ants into believing the young are its own, duping the ants into carrying the larvae back to their colonies to care for.

But what is more, the ant seems to "recognise" that it is being duped and one population appears to be engaging in an evolutionary arms race with the butterfly, says the team led by David Nash at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

The word gossip in Hebrew is lashon hara. Its literal translation is the ?evil tongue.? Jewish teaching holds that gossip is wrong even if it is true and spread with out malice. The Chefetz Chaim lists a whopping 31 commandments that may be violated when a person passes on or listens to gossip
gossip can wreck lives and shatter communities

    What about Islam?

The real meaning, said Paul Macek, a historian in Webster, a community of about 17,000 just northwest of where Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts intersect, is "English knifemen and Nipmuck Indians at the boundary or neutral fishing place."

    A Theory of Humor

    clipped by: wildcat

This paper presents a theory of humor, that certain psychological state which tends to produce laughter. The theory states that humor is fully characterized by three conditions, each of which, separately, is necessary for humor to occur, and all of which, jointly, are sufficient for humor to occur. The conditions of this theory describe a subjective state of apparent emotional absurdity, where the perceived situation is seen as normal, and where, simultaneously, some affective commitment of the perceiver to the way something in the situation ought to be is violated. This theory is explained in detail and its logical properties and empirical consequences are explored. Recognized properties of humor are explained (incongruity, surprise, aggression, emotional transformation, apparent comprehension difficulty, etc.). A wide variety of biological, social/communicational, and other classes of humor-related phenomena are characterized and explained in terms of the theory

As I report in my book, The Selfish Capitalist -- Origins of Affluenza, World Health Organization and nationally representative studies in the United States, Britain and Australia, reveal that it almost doubled between the early 80s and the turn of the century.

Add to this the astonishing fact that citizens of Selfish Capitalist, English-speaking nations (which tend to be one and the same) are twice as likely to suffer mental illness as those from mainland western Europe, which is largely Unselfish Capitalist in its political economy. An average 23% of Americans, Britons, Australians, New Zealanders and Canadians suffered in the last 12 months, but only 11.5% of Germans, Italians, French, Belgians, Spaniards and Dutch.

What does the damage is the combination of inequality with the widespread relative materialism of Affluenza - placing a high value on money, possessions, appearances and fame

"Todays charges seek to knock out one of the largest illegal spamming and fraud operations in the country, an international scheme to make money by manipulating stock prices through illegal spam e-mail promotions.

The charges arose after a three-year investigation - led by agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Internal Revenue Service - revealed a sophisticated and extensive spamming operation that, as alleged in the indictment, largely focused on running a stock "pump and dump" scheme, whereby the defendants sent spam touting thinly traded Chinese penny stocks, drove up their stock price, and reaped profits by selling the stock at artificially inflated prices.

On January 3, 11 people from around the world were charged with using botnets to run what is billed as one of the largest illegal spamming operations in the nation.

Sources also say that the younger brother was intoxicated at the time of the incident, having used marijuana and consumed enough liquor to have a blood-alcohol level above the .08 limit for adult drivers. The older brother also had been drinking and using marijuana

Although the police still possess the cell phones and have impounded the brothers car, city attorney spokesman Matt Dorsey said that without the Dhaliwals permission, police cannot legally search the items as potential evidence. Among the items police say they have spotted in the car is an empty vodka bottle.

Why I dont Watch the News

clippers remarks: All emotion, not facts.
This was one in a series of lessons I learned about how television news had lost its most basic journalistic instincts in its search for the audience-driven sweet spot, the "emotional center" of the American people. Gone was the mission of using technology to veer out onto the edge of American understanding in order to introduce something fundamentally new into the national debate. The informational edge was perilous, it was unpredictable, and it required the news audience to be willing to learn something it did not already know. Stories from the edge were not typically reassuring about the future. In this sense they were like actual news, unpredictable flashes from the unknown. On the other hand, the coveted emotional center was reliable, it was predictable, and its story lines could be duplicated over and over. It reassured the audience by telling it what it already knew rather than challenging it to learn.

Six Czech artists face charges for allegedly hijacking a television program last June and running images of a nuclear bomb exploding in the Czech countryside.

The incident occurred on Czech Television during the morning show "Panorama."

Evidence of widening unemployment heightened anticipation that the Federal Reserve would further cut interest rates this month, perhaps by an unusually large half a percentage point, in a bid to prevent the economy from sliding into the muck.

?This is unambiguously negative,? said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody?s Economy.com. ?The economy is on the edge of recession, if we?re not already engulfed in one.?

?The Fed is trying to juggle a two-sided sword,? said Ryan Larson, senior equity trader at Voyageur Asset Management. ?They?re trying to fight inflation moving higher and they?re trying to fight a slowdown in growth.?

Sleeping entwined with another is a novel concept, but theres always the problem of that extra arm. Where does one put it?

    Love Mattress

offers a simple solution for the chronic limp arm that often results from sleeping while wrapped in a prolonged embrace.

having your arm flattened under your partners body for prolonged periods of cuddling isnt exactly comfortable. Whats more, it may even prove detrimental to your health!

Loves sweet embrace can be painful

Love Mattress is simple: A solid unit makes up the middle portion of the bed, with several adjoining strips of foam connected at either end. Between these slats one can drop their shoulder or arm, allowing for a much more comfortable sleeping position while remaining all snuggled up.

Each polyurethane-injected foam strip is covered with a smooth fabric which allows for easy sliding

Not only is it good for sharing with another, but it also works for other positions,

    So,

youll be good to go for hours of

    The Soul of the Commuter

    clipped by: Kore7
    clippers remarks:
Roughly one out of every six American workers commutes more than forty-five minutes, each way. People travel between counties the way they used to travel between neighborhoods.
Until recently, I was one of these Americans. What started out as an invigorating drive through new urban environs eventually became repetitious and wearisome. Even though I was careful to fill my time with music, podcasts, audio-books, or phone calls, I dont miss this daily aggravation at all now, instead embracing the freedom public transportation confers. (Trains can be your friends...who knew? .)

The mental relaxation that comes with not being on constant heightened alert for all the unpredictable hazards is priceless and has returned a small measure of serenity to my life I thought I had lost.

What do clippers think? Are extended commutes worth their return? Given its finite supply, shouldnt most of us be valuing our precious time higher?
    Clip Source: www.newyorker.com
People may endure miserable commutes out of an inability to weigh their general well-being against quantifiable material gains.

Some take on long commutes by choice, and some out of necessity, although the difference between one and the other can be hard to discern. A commute is a distillation of a life?s main ingredients, a product of fundamental values and choices. And time is the vital currency: how much of it you spend?and how you spend it?reveals a great deal about how much you think it is worth.

Commuting is an exercise in repetition. The will to efficiency varies, but it expresses itself in the hardening of commuters? habits, as they seek to alleviate the dissipation of time and sanity. Some people travel with coffee; they have a place to buy it, a preferred approach to not spilling it, a manner of discarding the cup.

You can spot the novice: he?s rifling through pockets in search of his ticket, coffee bubbling up out the pinprick holes of his flattop lid, leading him to wonder how it is possible for the coffee to be leaking when the top is on tight. He has no strategy for newsprint stain.

    The Metaphysics of Boredom

    clipped by: abailart

Boredom is the dream bird that hatches the egg of experience. A rustling in the leaves drives him away.

    WALTER BENJAMIN,

Boredom is not an end-product, is comparatively rather an early stage in life and art. You?ve got to go by or past or through boredom, as through a filter, before the clear product emerges.

    F. SCOTT FITZGERALD,

Boredom is the self being stuffed with itself.

    WALKER PERCY

Boredom is ... a vital problem for the moralist, since at least half the sins of mankind are caused by the fear of it.

    BERTRAND RUSSELL

To escape boredom, man works either beyond what his usual needs require, or else he invents play, that is, work that is designed to quiet no need other than that for working in general.

    FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE,

Boredom rests upon the nothingness that winds its way through existence; its giddiness, like that which comes from gazing down into an infinite abyss, is infinite.

23 Tools To Brainwash and Influence People Through Media

    19. Demonize self-knowledge technology of all kinds. Throw around words like ?cult? and ?brainwashing.? Marginalize anyone involved in such pursuits.

    21. Keep people?s attention on what really matters. Emphasize what?s wrong as much as possible.

    22. Always give the impression that Everything Is Under Control ? but just barely so ? hammer into the populace the idea that their greatest fear could strike at any moment.

By sticking to these simple premises you should be able to produce entire societies capable of ending world hunger, but too selfish to care. You will be able to bring about massive consumer mindsets and buying habits so powerful that logic and reason become superfluous in making the sale. You will be the new face of media. Good luck!

Busyness is the other face of Boredom

    clipped by: abailart
    Clip Source: www.helium.com
Boredom and busyness are the same problem with different faces. Some people might think it counter-intuitive to try to deal with chronic boredom and busyness at the same time, but I have come to believe that the only way to deal with them is to face them simultaneously.

The first culprit is lack of purpose. Your purpose is what should be driving your life.

The second one is attention management.

BOREDOM is feeling that there are too few high quality ways to spend attention. BUSYNESS, on the other side, is forced boredom. This means that you feel there are high quality ways to spend attention, but your attention is being stolen from you before you can use it in a meaningful way.

Busyness and boredom could also be described as symptoms of resisting what COULD BE. I have often found that both types (busyness and boredom) are directly connected to perfectionism, which is an inability to accept imperfection or what is at the moment!

    How to live forever

It looks unlikely that medical science will abolish the process of ageing. But it no longer looks impossible

?IN THE long run,? as John Maynard Keynes observed, ?we are all dead.? True. But can the short run be elongated in a way that makes the long run longer? And if so, how, and at what cost? People have dreamt of immortality since time immemorial. They have sought it since the first alchemist put an elixir of life on the same shopping list as a way to turn lead into gold. They have written about it in fiction, from Rider Haggards ?She? to Frank Herberts ?Dune?. And now, with the growth of biological knowledge that has marked the past few decades, a few researchers believe it might be within reach.

To think about the question, it is important to understand why organisms?people included?age in the first place. People are like machines: they wear out. That much is obvious. However a machine can always be repaired

Why People Do Evil: a new view

    clipped by: abailart
clippers remarks: Whole pdf paper at site. The idea is that people doing dreadful things do not believe they are evil but right, morally good.
Until recently, psychologists and historians have agreed that ordinary people commit evil when, under the influence of leaders and groups, they become blind to the consequences of their actions. This consensus has become so strong that it is repeated, almost as a mantra, in psychology textbooks and in society at large. However critical scrutiny of both historical and psychological evidence ? along with a number of new studies, e.g. Krueger (in press); Staub (in press) ? has produced a radically different picture. People do great wrong, not because they are unaware of what they are doing but because they consider it to be right. This is possible because they actively identify with groups whose ideology justifies and condones the oppression and destruction of others.

    S. Alexander Haslam and Stephen D. Reicher re-examine the established view, in an article based on the 2007 Argyle Lecture

    Creation and meaning from Nothing

    clipped by: abailart
clippers remarks: R.D> Laing, The Politics of Experience (1967)

If there are no meanings, no values, no source of sustenance or help, then man, as creator, must invent, conjure up meanings and values, sustenance and succour out of nothing. He is a magician.

A man may indeed produce something new- a poem, a pattern, a sculpture, a system of ideas - think thoughts never before thought, produce sights never before seen. Little benefit is he likely to derive from his own creativity. The phantasy is not modified by such "acting out", even the sublimest. The fate that awaits the creator, after being ignored, neglected, despised, is, luckily or unluckily according to point of view, to be discovered by the non-creative.

The creative breath "comes from a zone of man where man cannot descend, even if Virgil were to lead him, for Virgil would not go down there".

This zone, the zone of no-thing, of the silence of silences, is the source. We forget that we are all there all the time.

Growing Artificial Skin From Hair Roots

    clipped by: Mohir

ScienceDaily (Jan. 4, 2008) ? There is new hope for patients with chronic wounds: euroderm GmbH and the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI in Leipzig have been granted approval to produce artificial skin from patients? own cells.

It sounds like something from a science fiction novel: Pluck a few of someone?s hairs, and four to six weeks later they have grown into a piece of skin. Of course, what researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI in Leipzig have recently started doing in their new cleanrooms isn?t quite as simple as that. ?We and euroderm GmbH have been given permission to grow dermal tissue for grafting onto chronic wounds such as open leg ulcers on diabetics patients,? says IZI team leader Dr. Gerno Schmiedeknecht.

The researchers expect to grow skin grafts for 10 to 20 patients a month in 2008, depending on how many doctors prescribe this therapy.

    The Value of Boredom

    clipped by: abailart
Approaching the edge of boredom can be like an intense itch. It is not so much an itch in the skin; its more of an itch in the mind, in the awareness. Sitting there without the security of a book or the comforting drone of the television or radio, we start to squirm, to sweat, recite the shopping list, anything to scratch that itch.

How many times has your mind repeated these mantras in your head: "Im busy. Im being productive. Im thinking up new ideas. Im doing something important." Weve taught ourselves to feel good about being busy. When activity is balanced, when it is not all consuming, then it usually is good. It invigorates the mind and soul. Constant busyness, however, is numbing.

You see, when we are active without rest, when we are busy, busy, busy, we stop feeling.

That raises the question, "What am I working so hard to not feel, think, or see?"

To be bored is to be on the verge of being startled awake.

Castanedas teacher don Juan called this technique "not doing."

Action sequel National Treasure: Book of Secrets, starring Nicolas Cage, has claimed the pre-Christmas number one spot at the North American box office.

The film sold $45.5m (£23m) worth of tickets during its first three days, distributor Walt Disney Pictures said.

Last weekends top film I am Legend, which sees Will Smith as the last man on Earth, slipped to number two.

Meanwhile, childrens film Alvin and the Chipmunks was also down one spot to number three.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets earned more than the combined totals of four other newcomers in the US and Canada top 10.
