Clipmarks | Live ClipsChristian Prison Program can?t get tax dollarsclipped by: wiccantexanSpending the publics money on a faith-based rehabilitation program in which Iowa prisoners immerse themselves in evangelical Christianity is unconstitutional, a federal appeals court ruled Monday. The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in a 28-page decision, concluded the program at the Newton Correctional Facility has advanced religion at government expense. The eight-year-old program now operates solely on donations after Gov. Chet Culver, a Democrat, signed legislation earlier this year eliminating a state appropriation. A total of 104 inmates participate in the Newton program, spending seven days a week in work, counseling and prayer, with a heavy emphasis on Bible teachings. The court case has attracted national media attention as a test of President Bushs initiative for faith-based government services. Similar treatment programs are sponsored by Prison Fellowship at prisons in Arkansas, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri and Texas.
No Gays--No Free Ride for Boy Scouts Hdqtrsclipped by: papananookclippers remarks: Why should a city that is prohibited from discrimination (rightly) pay for Hdqtrs. of an org that does? Philadelphia Boy Scouts must pay for their bigotryUp until now, the Philadelphia area chapter of the Boy Scouts of America got a nice building from the city for only $1 per year. But now their free ride is over, because of their policy against homosexuals. In 2000, the Supreme Court ruled that the Boy Scouts are a private organization, and are therefore entitled to bar whomever they want from their ranks. But the city doesnt have to support the Boy Scouts exclusionary policy, and so, according to a report from KYW New Radio, "City solicitor Romy Diaz had given the Cradle of Liberty Council of the Scouts until Monday to renounce the Scouts national policy against homosexuals, or pay market rate rent ($200,000 a year) for its headquarters on city-owned land, or find a new home." But I am concerned for the innocent young boys who join the Scouts. What are they learning from this? I hope they are learning that bigotry is not acceptable. Rediscovered and restored puppets of Santa Claus and Rudolph that were animated for TVs "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" are making holiday appearances, delighting fans of the special that has been a perennial favorite since its first airing in 1964. CBS plans to show it again Tuesday. Kriess, 44, said he bought his two treasures from a person whose family had received them years ago from a relative who worked for Rankin/Bass. For many years, the delicate wood, wire and fabric puppets had been treated casually: first as toys and later as holiday decorations. Arthur Rankin Jr., who with producing partner Jules Bass created the "Rudolph" special for original sponsor General Electric, said the figures were just going to be thrown out, so his secretary took them home and gave them to family. Paganism gets new life on campusclipped by: wiccantexan![]() Tamara Cheshire believes there is a great misunderstanding about what it means to be a pagan, which can lead to disapproval among ill-informed people. ?I think there?s a stigma associated with the term pagan,? says Cheshire, adjunct professor of anthropology and ethnic studies and faculty adviser to the City College Pagan Club. Cheshire says this stigma can make finding an exact definition of paganism nearly impossible and that many non-pagans are quick to offer their own definition while having an obvious lack of knowledge about the belief system. Stigmas about pagans offer a different set of challenges to the club. ?The discrimination on campus is frightful,? Cheshire says. ?Some people have really whacked-out theories about what we do,? Wachs says. Wachs does point out that she feels fortunate to be at City College because a diverse representation of beliefs is welcome here. She implores people to stop by club meetings. Really amazing. iPhone owners were responsible for nearly one out of every 1,000 Web page views last month. This erases any doubt that the future of mobile devices most certainly includes the Web. The iPhone has the same browser as Apple?s computers, meaning iPhone owners can see the same version of Web pages people see on their PCs. IPhone owners embraced the browser to the extent that they represented 0.09% of all Web pages viewed in November. That doesn?t sound like much, but consider that through September, Apple had only sold 1.4 million iPhones. As a point of comparison, devices running every version of Windows mobile operating system combined made up 0.06% of Web page views. Companies have been making mobile devices that run Windows since 1996, according to Computer World, and three million of the devices were shipped in the first quarter of 2007 alone, according to research company Gartner. iPhone owners are about 90 times more likely to view a Web page than the typical Internet user ![]() Worse than Bush?clipped by: n2soonersFinally, They Found Someone Worse Than BushWho could be worse than Bush to a Democrat? Global Bankers Seek Raid Taxpayers On Subprime Fiascoclipped by: merrieclippers remarks: Currently, Attorneys General in New York, Ohio, and Colorado are investigating illegal appraiser activity with respect to banks and other lenders pressuring appraisers to fudge their appraisals. The Securities and Exchange Commission is currently investigating illegal activity at credit rating companies who might have been pressured into issuing artificially high credit ratings. For the investment bankers, most of their profit is taken out of the "enhancement" value at the expense of the underlying investment that is being purchased by unsuspecting investors. In other words, the ultimate investor is getting hosed from the start but the house of cards doesnt fall until the cash flow starts to dry up -- as in, John Doe cant make his house payment and goes into default on his mortgage. Securitizations made against the subprime lending markets were simply the weakest links in the financial chain. ![]() Banking used to be simple. When you borrowed money from a bank, the bank owned your mortgage and you paid the interest and principal directly. This is easily understood by this graphic representation: ![]() Things got complicated when bankers got greedy, figuring the could make a whole lot more than just simple interest. The scheme is called securitization, as depicted by the following flow-chart. ![]() In its simplest terms, securitization is a process whereby illiquid financial instruments (e.g., mortgages) are purchased and combined into pools. There are many fees that are paid along the road to successful securitization. The original borrower pays "points" to the initial broker and/or banker. The pool operator receives the rights to income at a discounted price. The investment bankers are the primary enablers and drivers of the securitization process. Right behind them is the Federal Reserve, who is supposed to be a watchdog on shaky banking practices. For the majority of Americans, this means that it is time to start wondering what cool things you will get for your family, and if someone will buy you an iPhone or ?Superbad? on DVD. Many Christians claim that Christmas is a day that we should remember as Jesus? birthday and that we should never forget it. Along the same line of thought, some non-Christians don?t celebrate Christmas because they claim it is a Christian holiday. But are these claims true? If Christmas was a religious holiday, we wouldn?t try to get the selfish pleasure of giving our loved ones nice things. Instead, we would only give gifts to people we don?t care about, people we don?t know and even people we hate (Jesus said it is easy to love your friends, but better to love your enemies). If Christmas was a religious holiday, we would be honoring a crucifix symbolizing death and suffering, not a tree symbolizing life. We would be praying, not buying material gifts. Young Chimp beats college students at memory testclipped by: thekayNEW YORK - Think youre smarter than a fifth-grader? How about a 5-year-old chimp? Japanese researchers pitted young chimps against human adults in tests of short-term memory, and overall, the chimps won. That challenges the belief of many people, including many scientists, that "humans are superior to chimpanzees in all cognitive functions," said researcher Tetsuro Matsuzawa of Kyoto University. "No one can imagine that chimpanzees ? young chimpanzees at the age of 5 ? have a better performance in a memory task than humans," he said in a statement. Results showed that the chimps, while no more accurate than the people, could do this faster. He thinks two factors gave his chimps the edge. For one thing, he believes human ancestors gave up much of this skill over evolutionary time to make room in the brain for gaining language abilities. A little background for those who missed it: Austin Area Interreligious Ministries, the interfaith group that has sponsored a Thanksgiving celebration for 23 years, asks a different faith group to host the event each year. Without a large enough space of their own, the Muslims rented a gymnasium at the Quarries, a recreational facility in North Austin owned by Hyde Park Baptist. They made the reservation in July and thought nothing of it until Hyde Park leaders informed Interreligious Ministries on the Wednesday before the Sunday service that the church could not allow Muslim prayer and the promotion of non-Christian religions on its property. The answer, they say, has to do with the virus itself. It is more stable and stays in the air longer when air is cold and dry, the exact conditions for much of the flu season. ?Influenza virus is more likely to be transmitted during winter on the way to the subway than in a warm room,? said Peter Palese, a flu researcher who is professor and chairman of the microbiology department at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and the lead author of the flu study. Dr. Palese published details of his findings in the Oct. 19 issue of PLoS Pathogens. The crucial hint that allowed him to do his study came from a paper published in the aftermath of the 1918 flu pandemic, when doctors were puzzling over why and how the virus had spread so quickly and been so deadly. Estimates of the oil resource in place within the Green River Formation range from 1.5 to 1.8 trillion barrels. Not all resources in place are recoverable the midpoint in our estimate range, 800 billion barrels, is more than triple the proven oil reserves of Saudi Arabia. Present U.S. demand for petroleum products is about 20 million barrels per day. If oil shale could be used to meet a quarter of that demand, 800 billion barrels of recoverable resources would last for more than 400 years. Shell anticipates that, in contrast to the cost estimates for mining and surface retorting, the petroleum products produced by their thermally conductive in-situ method will be competitive at crude oil prices in the mid-$20s per barrel. note: even if costs turned out to be 3X, its still economically viable at todays prices Cat survives 19 days with jar on headclipped by: AmerginA cat has survived for 19 days with a peanut butter jar stuck on its head. To decipher the neurological underpinnings of those decisions, which will help explain the unique neurological characteristics of emotion, Hackjin Kim, a former postdoctoral scholar at Caltech who is now an assistant professor at Korea University--along with Ralph Adolphs, a professor of psychology and neuroscience, John ODoherty, an associate professor of psychology, and Shinsuke Shimojo, a professor of biology--used a novel technique to monitor the activation of two brain regions during decision-making tasks. What is Reiki?clipped by: wurdzgurlReiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If ones "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "Gods Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy." Bush will outline on Thursday a plan to freeze mortgage rates for five years for many U.S. homeowners facing sharp interest-rate resets, an industry source said on Wednesday. The source, who is familiar with details of the plan, said it would cover subprime loans originated between January 1, 2005, and July 31, 2007, with rates that are due to reset between January 1 of next year and June or July of 2010. The plan is primarily aimed at borrowers who can afford their existing rates and who are current on their payments, but who would face default when the rate resets higher. Among those borrowers, homeowners whose credit scores have risen since they took out their loan would qualify for "fast-tracked" loan modification that would hold their interest rate steady for five years. Borrowers whose credits scores had not improved could still qualify for a five-year rate freeze, but would face more scrutiny before receiving any modification. When he died in 1917, his colleague Pierre Auguste Renoir said, ?It is fortunate for him ... any conceivable death is better than living the way he was.? For Claude Monet, 1912-22 was a watershed decade. He was perhaps the most successful artist of his time, and his genius had already assured him a place in history. But as he aged, his painting noticeably lost subtlety. Brush strokes became bolder, and colors strikingly blue, orange or brown. His images lost detail and flowed into one another. His days as an avant-garde rebel had long passed, but some critics would later wonder whether the Impressionist was suddenly trying to become an abstract expressionist. Now, thanks to modern digital techniques, scientists and critics can have a better idea how cataracts changed what Monet saw. Although it is impossible to know how Monet wanted his canvases to look, Dr. Marmor?s research suggests that understanding physical infirmity can help assess his work. Kerrclipped by: n2soonersSuzie at Assorted Babble passed on this segment from the Rush Limbaugh Show this week. ** Suzie has the video posted. Despite his feigned surprise after the CNN YouTube Republican debate last week when questioned about the plant General Kerr, Anderson Cooper knew General Kerr all along. Gordon Bloyer called Rush Limbaugh on Monday and related what he saw at the YouTube debate where he was one of the questioners who was flown in to participate in the debate. Here is the transcript from the Rush Limbaugh Show: CALLER: Right. And so here we all come up there, and Anderson Cooper comes out, and he immediately recognizes the general. He says, "Oh, General Kerr. Im glad youre here." He didnt recognize any of the rest of us, but he recognized him real easy. RUSH: He did, eh? CALLER: Absolutely. RUSH: Cooper recognized Kerr? US to Recognize Virtual Propertyclipped by: wildcatYesterday a judgment by consent was filed in a suit over copyright and trademark rights in Second Life filed last month. Six Second Life content creators had filed suit against Thomas Simon (aka Rase Kenzo) for allegedly duplicating and distributing thousands of their goods. The judgement must be entered by the court, but once that happens Simon will pay $525 in damages under the oath that he only profited $525. The larger significance, as reported by Benjamin Duranske at Virtually Blind, is that because the judgement refers to the copied items as "merchandise" it will "stand as the first formal, if tentative, recognition of virtual property by a U.S. court" although without "as significant a precedential value as a contested decision on the merits would have had." But thats still a precedent. Maybe nothing. They may be just overblown issues in the otherwise normal lives of candidates under the political microscope. Such symptoms, however, may mean a lot -- such as evidence of underlying brain dysfunction. Sometimes people with messy personal lives have low prefrontal cortex activity associated with poor judgment; sometimes people with temper problems have brain damage and impulse control problems; sometimes people who struggle with authenticity have trouble really seeing things from someone elses perspective. Clearly we care about the health outlook for our elected leaders. Should we go so far as to do brain scans? Of candidates for the Oval Office? Some people might consider discussing brain health a ridiculous idea. Not me. MRSA Virus Rampant in Our Jails..Deadly Staph infection..clipped by: TJColatrellaDeadly Staph Infection Superbug Has a Dangerous Foothold in U.S. Jails The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC has rightfully called MRSA (pronounced mer-sa) the "cockroach of bacteria." It spreads silently and stealthily, and moves quickly from one location to the next. Once its around, its also incredibly difficult to get rid of because this virulent mutation of staph is resistant to all but the most rare and expensive antibiotics. Sometimes, even the super drugs dont work against this superbug, resulting in some 19,000 deaths in 2005, amounting to more than one in five of the estimated 94,000 Americans walking around MRSA lurking on skin surfaces and in nasal cavities. A Church Is Dividedclipped by: debbyski![]() SAVANNAH, Ga. ? For 274 years, there has been one Christ Church here, and it is a congregation with a proud history. So it was unsettling, to say the least, for some longtime members when Christ Church, which is believed to be the first church established in Georgia, voted recently to part ways with the Episcopal diocese it had been a part of for more than 200 years to join an Anglican diocese in Uganda. At issue for these breakaway parishes is whether churches that condone same-sex relationships are still following the Bible, and the Episcopal denomination is not the only one affected by the debate. The religious rifts, including the one here, have flooded courts nationwide with civil lawsuits over church property, an area of jurisprudence where courts, as they try to navigate First Amendment separations of church and state, are notoriously uncomfortable. Why The Flu Likes Winterclipped by: debbyskiResearchers in New York believe they have solved one of the great mysteries of the flu: Why does the infection spread primarily in the winter months? The answer, they say, has to do with the virus itself. It is more stable and stays in the air longer when air is cold and dry, the exact conditions for much of the flu season. ?Influenza virus is more likely to be transmitted during winter on the way to the subway than in a warm room,? said Peter Palese, a flu researcher who is professor and chairman of the microbiology department at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and the lead author of the flu study. As long as flu has been recognized, people have asked, Why winter? The very name, ?influenza,? is an Italian word that some historians proposed, originated in the mid-18th century as influenza di freddo, or ?influence of the cold.? Real Working People Will be Hurt by Recessionclipped by: abailartThe media has been brimming with recession analyses, but as far as Ive seen, its all been from the perspective of financial markets But if we are truly in a slowdown, this may be as good as it gets for middle-class families in the highly-touted, much celebrated business cycle of the 2000s. If so, it will be like the 1990s without the good part -- the part where prosperity was broadly shared for a few years before the bubble burst. This lack of shared prosperity is the signature characteristic of todays economy. Any politician who isnt taking about what he or she intends to do about it isnt worth listening to. WILLISTON, VT -- Thirteen demonstrators were arrested and cited for trespassing Friday at a Vermont Army National Guard recruiting office as dozens more protesters surrounded the building, opposing military recruiting in schools. The protests grew from a campaign by students at Mount Mansfield Union High School in Jericho who object to military recruiters in their school and the requirement that high schools hand over student contact information to the recruiters. Many of the protesters were taken to the Chittenden County Sheriffs Office, where they were to be processed and cited for trespassing Friday evening, Williston Police Chief James Dimmick said. Three juveniles were cited and released, he said. The high school students organized Fridays demonstration, and other groups opposed to the war in Iraq joined the cause. Dr Ian Morgan, of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Vision Science, says there has been a dramatic escalation in myopia rates in East Asia during the past 30 years. "A gene pool doesnt change that fast." A comparison of children of Chinese origin living in Singapore and Sydney, which matched the subjects for age and parental myopia, shows the rate of myopia in Singaporean children is 10 times higher. The key difference in their weekly activities was in time spent outdoors with Sydney-based children outside almost four times longer than their Singapore counterparts.
