My second "clipiversary"

Clip Source: omega.wordpress.com
Time runs so fast and somebody should definitely do something about it; like bribing the sun and convince it for slowing down the earth?s orbital voyage around it. ;) When I was browsing the new clips at Clipmarks this morning, I suddenly noticed that date on my profile: ?Joined: 11/10/2005?. Yes, today it?s been exactly 2 years since I joined Clipmarks, which means 730 great days, 104 wonderful weeks or 24 months full of clipping, sharing and fun.

My clip collection

As I often mention it here on this modest blog or elsewhere, Clipmarks has been a very special thing in my online life. Now while I am browsing more than 1700 clips I posted (and many more others, posted by fellow clippers) I can?t help thinking ?What if there had not been a site like this, what if Clipmarks never existed??

So thanks again Clipmarks, for these great 2 years; and thanks to all clippers who have been making this ?infotainment? experience a very special one. I am proud of being a part of this great community.

Kucinich: Why impeach Cheney? Why not wait?

clipped by: masbury
clippers remarks: What might the admin be planning in the 18 months that remain?

JUAN GONZALEZ: What do you say to those who will argue that even though they may agree with you on a lot of your concerns, that the impeachment process itself would drag out for so long that it may as well -- people should just move forward toward the elections and elect a new president?

REP. DENNIS KUCINICH: Right, well, you think about that. You know, the administration will be in office for at least fourteen more months. They can cause a lot of damage in that time. They?re planning to attack Iran. When you think about the defense authorization budget including a provision that would retrofit Stealth B-2 bombers so they can carry 30,000-pound bombs, which would then be dropped on nuclear research labs, creating an humanitarian and ecological disaster, ?What are we waiting for?? is the question, not ?Why don?t we wait for the election??

November Is National American Indian Heritage Month

clipped by: MorganLvr
clippers remarks: Actually, James Garner is one quarter Cherokee - his mother was one half Cherokee.

I trust you can insert into your newspaper the fact that November is National American Indian Heritage Month. A proclamation was just signed by President Bush.

If there is one group in our culture that deserves this honor, it is the American Indian and the many who have American Indian blood in their veins. Our local historian, Bill Woodiel, has done so much towards the recognition of the Trail of Tears. What caused the Trail of Tears was absolutely disgraceful. A removal of people from their very successful plantations and forcing them into the wilds of the Oklahoma territory.

An example as a descendant is actor James Garner, who is from Oklahoma and is half Cherokee and active in American Indian organizations. Also, who can forget the Oklahoma Cherokee Cowboy and philosopher, Will Rodgers?

(Editors Note: If youd like to read President Bushs proclamation for National American Indian Heritage Month, go online to: www.whitehouse.gov/news/re-leases/2007/10/20071031-2.html.)

Giuliani didnt deny that there are imperfections in American politics that turn young people off, but claimed that young people could change what they didnt like. "You get a chance to vote. And if you pass it up," he said, "its your fault."

John Edwards has a whole agenda for college affordability, which includes a national initiative that pays for one year of public-college tuition, fees, and books for more than 2 million students

Hantavirus plague killed Grand Canyon Biologist

clipped by: pokkets
clippers remarks: Plague is an emotive word, but the disease hantavirus is endemic to the South West U.S.A. It can be carried and transmitted by wild animals, rats and fleas, and can also be transmitted by inhaling droplets expelled by humans when coughing or sneezing. Fatal cases are said to be rare, and it can be treated with antibiotics, but up to 50% of cases can be fatal if pneumonia develops. While Arizona officials said the disease was on the rise, the Center for Disease Control said the same was not true nationally.
Clip Source: www.mail.com
A wildlife biologist at Grand Canyon National Park likely died from the plague through his exposure to wild animals that can carry the disease, the National Park Service said Friday

Eric York, 37, was found dead in his home Nov. 2. Following his death, about 30 people who came in contact with him were given antibiotics as a precaution

Park Service officials initially said they suspected the plague or hantavirus

Health officials in Arizona warned in September that the plague appeared to be on the rise

Plague is transmitted primarily by fleas and direct contact with infected animals. When the disease causes pneumonia, it can be transmitted from an infected person to a non-infected person by airborne cough droplets

Cases are treatable with antibiotics, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that up to 50 percent are fatal if the disease causes pneumonia. The Coconino County Medical Examiner has said Yorks lungs were filled with fluid and his body showed signs of pneumonia.

Bushs "Firsthand" Experience With War

clipped by: BobbyRutan
clippers remarks: Seems like we are getting a rerun of Ronnie Raygun, at least the reminiscing of their accounts of being involved in warfare.
President Bush, who claimed earlier this week that he understands the consequences of war "firsthand," shot at insurgents on the streets of Baghdad yesterday

But only in virtual reality

Bush tried his hand at a computer game designed for recovering soldiers during a visit to a private Texas facility for grievously wounded veterans -- a visit that he sandwiched between two big-donor Republican fundraisers

according to White House Press Secretary Dana Perino, he "helped to shoot the bad guys" in a Baghdad neighborhood

In an interview on Wednesday with German television networks, Bush asserted: "Ive committed our troops into harms way twice, and its not a pleasant experience because I understand the consequences firsthand

Bush, of course, has no combat experience

sometimes he gives the impression that he doesnt appreciate how removed he is from the horrors of war, and how different his situation is from those who bear the burden of his decisions

This would appear to be another such example

Conservative businessmen sound out single payer

Single payer health insurance could also ease the financial ?burden? on big businesses by spreading the cost of healthcare across a wider pool of financial supporters who pay into the system. Also, healthier workers would mean fewer sick days and fewer sick days ultimately mean more profitable businesses.

New Army Helicopter overheats

The Army says it will come out of their budget. That shouldnt be a problem? Where do they get their money? A bottomless pit?
Clip Source: www.mail.com
By AARON C. DAVIS

The Army is spending $2.6 billion on hundreds of European-designed helicopters for homeland security and disaster relief that turn out to have a crucial flaw: They arent safe to fly on hot days, according to an internal report obtained by The Associated Press.

While the Army scrambles to fix the problem -- adding millions to the taxpayer cost -- at least one high-ranking lawmaker is calling for the whole deal to be scrapped.

During flight tests in Southern California in mild, 80-degree weather, cockpit temperatures in the UH-72A Lakota soared above 104, the point at which the Army says the communication, navigation and flight

control systems can overheat and shut down.

the report concluded that the aircraft "is not effective for use in hot environments."

The Army

will take the highly unusual step of adding air conditioners to many of the 322 helicopters ordered.

The retrofitting will cost at least $10 million and will come out of the Armys budget, according to the Army.

"Homeland" Security Nominee Kerik a Crook

Former New York City police chief Bernard Kerik has pleaded not guilty to federal corruption and tax charges.

Mr Kerik, the citys top police officer at the time of the 9/11 terror attacks, was indicted by a federal grand jury.

He has been charged with 14 offences, including fraud, obstructing an FBI investigation and lying to the federal government, a US attorney said.

The matter is awkward for presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani, who backed Mr Kerik to run homeland security in 2004.

President George W Bush nominated Mr Kerik for homeland security in part on the strength of Mr Giulianis recommendation.

Read this BEFORE you get a flu shot

The vaccine may not be as good?or as safe?as you think.

How effective is the shot?
The flu shot is only as good as the educated guesses of a group of vaccine researchers across the globe. Every February, they try to predict which flu viruses will work their evil during the next fall and winter. Their three top choices are put into the vaccine. The CDC claims that vaccine will be 70 to 90 percent effective against just those strains of flu. ?We hope that these smart scientists who get together with the vaccine producers make the right call,? says immunologist Randy Horwitz, MD, medical director of the University of Arizona?s School for Integrative Medicine. But sometimes they don?t, partly because the virus mutates from year to year. In 2003?2004, the CDC admitted that it completely missed the virulent Fujian flu strain that hit hard that winter.

The 2-gigabyte SD memory card looks like any other, but it has a small antenna and Wi-Fi service inside. For setup, the card must be in the supplied card reader and formatted to recognize the right network.

If you use a photo sharing site like Shutterfly, Flickr or Facebook, the card will send photos over the Internet to Eye-Fi, which then formats them for the site. It also automates sign-in and passwords so that your photos seem to appear magically.

Censorship is the tool of those who have the need to hide actualities from themselves and others. Their fear is only their inability to face what is real. Then there are the myopic little nitpickers, people who scurry about seeking little bits of garbage in the fabric of science (and of course, there are such flaws everywhere), and when they find some scrap of rot, they squeak triumphantly and hold it high and declare that the science everywhere is similarly corrupt. They lack perspective. They ignore everything that doesnt fit their search criterion, and of course, theyre focused only on putrescence. They arent scientists, theyre more like rats.

Leonardos Last Supper hides true Da Vinci Code

Still it would have been obvious to him, and one persons music can be anothers noise.

Nov. 9, 2007 -- A real da Vinci code is indeed hidden within Leonardos "The Last Supper," according to a book to be published in Italy next week.

    Hidden Score

But rather than conspiracy theories, the new code points to a hidden musical score, a sacred text and a three-dimensional chalice.

"This is not another spin-off of Dan Browns novel. Its real," musician Giovanni Maria Pala told Discovery News in an exclusive interview. "Ive always been intrigued by the possibility of finding a (piece of) music in the Last Supper, but I would have never imagined to find myself decoding a secret message by Leonardo."

Indeed, Leonardo was an accomplished lyre player who also enjoyed hiding puzzles in his work.

Pala, who will publish his findings next week in the book "La Musica Celata" (which translates to "The Hidden Music") claims to have discovered nothing less than a sacred hymn and text

with mystic symbols in da Vincis degraded masterpiece.

Looking at single details wasnt the correct approach," Pala said.

Thats the most alarming thing about this administration. It seems many conservatives have embraced Bushs example of willful ignorance. They depend on flattery, censorship and wishful thinking to justify their policies.

A soldier who dies for his country is a hero, whether he is Democrat or Republican, whether his family supports the war or opposes it. Excluding some families of fallen soldiers on Memorial Day on the basis of political affiliations is Treason!
    Clip Source: www.iht.com

Since the war in Afghanistan began six years ago, Bush has met quietly with more than 450 such families, and is likely to do so Sunday, Veterans Day, in Waco, Texas, near his Crawford ranch. Bush often says he hears their voices - "Dont let my son die in vain," he quotes them as saying - when making decisions about the war. Yet war critics wonder just whose voices the president is hearing.

Like Melissa Storey, Bill Adams of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, wrote Bush a letter - not to praise the president, but to question the militarys account of the death of his son,

But when the president met families of the fallen that day in Lancaster, it did not escape Adamss notice that he was not among them.

"I cant help but be left with the suspicion that possibly his advance team screened those families for people who would be sympathetic," Adams said. Given the chance, he said, he would have told Bush "that my sons life was squandered."

That is not the message Bush typically hears.

Thanks to alert reader Cedric, we now have a confession form David Thorpe that he was , indeed, the person who intentionally put up the fraudulent GEOCLIMATICSTUDIES.INFO website, that he did so with the intent of trying to discredit people he disagrees with and one other very, very important thing for the media to remember.

The resort to hoaxing does not argue that proponents of global warming theory are very confident of their own scientific grounding. And foolish leftists publicly congratulate him on his dirty trick. Going on record approving of lying does not speak that well of their intelligennce, though they no doubt pride themselves on being smarter than conservatives.

Congratulations and kudos to Cedric and Gaius. Well-done, gentlemen.

WASHINGTON ?  Warning that American voters risk returning a sexual predator to the White House in 2008, the woman who accused President Bill Clinton of fondling her in the Oval Office nearly 15 years ago is renewing her allegations and making new ones in a tell-all book.

Kathleen Willey, whose husband was found dead in the Virginia woods in 1993 of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound ? the same day Willey claims the then-president made an unwanted sexual pass at her, now suggests that the Clintons may have had something to do with Ed Willeys death.

But the former White House volunteer said thats not her primary purpose in writing the book.

"Israel says the party in power in Ramallah (Fatah) serves its interests and if Israel withdraws from the West Bank, Hamas will take control. Thats true," Mahmud Zahar told a party rally in Jabaliya, in the northern Gaza Strip.

He called on Palestinian president Mahmud Abbass Fatah party to "learn the lesson of what happened in Gaza" -- where nearly five months ago Hamas routed the moderate leaders loyalists and security officers in the coastal enclave.

Zahar also said an international meeting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that the United States is preparing to host later this month would fail.

"Meet each other as often as you want but you wont get the homeland back or liberate the holy places. The autumn meeting does not frighten us,"

He also warned Israel that its soldiers would be "cut to pieces" if the army launched a much threatened widescale offensive on the Islamist-run Gaza Strip.

"The occupiers should know that if they intend to enter the Gaza Strip they will leave cut into pieces," he said.

Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak warned late last month that every day brought closer the prospect of a full-scale military operation against the Gaza Strip to curb frequent rocket attacks on Israel.

"The autumn leaves will fall but so will the yellow flags," added Zahar, alluding to the colour of the Fatah party.

BANGALORE, India (AP ) -- Doctors began operating Tuesday on a 2-year-old girl born with four arms and four legs in an extensive surgery that they hope will leave the girl with a normal body, a hospital official said.

The girl is joined to a "parasitic twin" that stopped developing in the mothers womb. The surviving fetus absorbed the limbs, kidneys and other body parts of the undeveloped fetus.

The girl, Lakshmi, is named after the four-armed Hindu goddess of wealth, and some in her village in the northern state of Bihar revere her.

"Everybody considers her a goddess at our village," said her father, Shambhu, who goes by one name. "All this expenditure has happened to make her normal. So far, everything is fine."

Others sought to make money from Lakshmi. Her parents kept her in hiding after a circus apparently tried to buy the girl, they said.

ROME - Its a new Da Vinci code but this time it could be for real.

An Italian musician and computer technician claims to have uncovered musical notes encoded in Leonardo Da Vincis "Last Supper," raising the possibility that the Renaissance genius might have left behind a sombre composition to accompany the scene depicted in the 15th-century wall painting.

"It sounds like a requiem," Giovanni Maria Pala said. "Its like a soundtrack that emphasizes the passion of Jesus."

In a book released Friday in Italy, Pala explains how he took elements of the painting that have symbolic value in Christian theology and interpreted them as musical clues.

Pala first saw that by drawing the five lines of a musical staff across the painting, the loaves of bread on the table as well as the hands of Jesus and the Apostles could each represent a musical note.

For now (while we pack our towels), the Xbox 360 sold 17,673 fueled by (raise an eyebrow) Namco Bandais Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation, which debuted at the #2 spot behind Super Mario Galaxy.

The PS3 sold 17,434 units compared to Xbox 360s 17,673, a slight 200 unit separation. But to just give an idea how dramatic the increase in sales was, the previous week Xbox 360 only sold 3,718 units, increasing its sales almost five fold. Repent while you still can.

Italian police have found what they say is a "Ten Commandments"-style code of behaviour for Mafia members, at the hideout of a captured Mafia boss.

Prohibitions include frequenting bars and looking at friends wives, while members are urged to treat their own wives with respect.

The list was found during the arrest of Salvatore Lo Piccolo, the reputed new boss of the Sicilian Mafia.

It is thought to have been drawn up as a "guide to being a good mobster".

Other activites apparently beyond the pale for Mafiosi are being friends with the police, being late for appointments and "appropriating money if it belongs to other Mafia members or to other families".

The document makes clear that people with police or informers in their family cannot become members of the Mob.

And although mobsters wives must be respected, they should not expect much support during childbirth: the rules state that "always being available for Cosa Nostra is a duty - even if your wifes about to give birth".

Theyre proud of smoking pot, they draw their political inspiration from cigar-chomping comics and rock legends, and they want to get elected so they can stick it to "The Man."

The new party - officially called neorhino.ca - is one of at least two groups claiming to be a reincarnation of the defunct Rhinocerous party that specialized in political satire.

Why We Lie: Evolution and Deception

    By David Livingstone Smith
    St. Martins Press, 2004.
    Buy from Amazon.com

?Why We Lie? [1] is a fascinating book about a fascinating subject. Two related general themes run throughout the book. The first theme is that lying is deeply embedded in our subconscious as a result of evolution. Most of the books stories are linked to this theme. Evolution means simply that those who survive by lying possess among their talents the ability or the features that deceive predators who could harm them, as well as the ability or the features that deceive victims whom they may harm. The living things that did not have the knack to deceive or that had less ability to lie died of starvation or by being eaten. They did not survive to reproduce, more than those who possessed the quality to lie and had a better chance of multiplying. Thus, evolution produced the best liars.

A similar evolution occurs in both predators and their victims. Those who blend into the background survive more readily than those who stand out.

It was barely audible, but the soft click-click of the keyboard in the background confirmed it. Oh, well, its the information age. Normally, shed have to go through my staff first, but I gave her an appointment.

Susan had chosen me because she had researched my education, read a paper I had written, determined my university affiliation and knew where I lived. It was a little too much ? as if she knew how stinky and snorey I was last Sunday morning. Yes, she was simply researching important aspects of her own health care. Yes, who your surgeon is certainly affects what your surgeon does. But I was unnerved by how she brandished her information, too personal and just too rude on our first meeting

Why Your Decisions are Always Right

    Clip Source: www.livescience.com
Life is full of choices, sometimes too many choices.

Should you buy the SUV or the gas-saving hybrid car? Should you have the artery-clogging cheeseburger or the lean turkey sandwich? Sometimes we make the "right" choices, but other times we make the choices of fools. Oddly enough, those foolish choices don?t usually bother us for long. Instead, they are quickly rationalized until the guilt goes away.

Why are humans so good at fooling themselves?

Our brains, then, werent so much designed to make choices as to pretend, no matter what, that we made the right choices. The goal seems to be mental peace; as we all know too well, the time from bad choice to righteousness is very uncomfortable and so the sooner we justify our decisions, the better.

This kind of shilly-shallying is, in fact, so prevalent in human behavior that it must have some evolutionary basis. That is, it must be advantageous. Embarrassing and annoying, but advantageous. How?

Researchers successfully simulate photosynthesis and design a better leaf

University of Illinois researchers have built a better plant, one that produces more leaves and fruit without needing extra fertilizer. The researchers accomplished the feat using a computer model that mimics the process of evolution. Theirs is the first model to simulate every step of the photosynthetic process.

Photosynthesis converts light energy into chemical energy in plants, algae, phytoplankton and some species of bacteria and archaea. Photosynthesis in plants involves an elaborate array of chemical reactions requiring dozens of protein enzymes and other chemical components. Most photosynthesis occurs in a plant?s leaves.

?The question we wanted to ask, was, ?Can we do better than the plant, in terms of productivity?? ? said principal investigator Steve Long, a professor of plant biology and crop sciences at the University of Illinois.

Chiles San Rafael glacier fast disappearing

Chunks of glacial ice tinkled in whisky glasses as chilled tourists gazed in wonder from their boat at the massive San Rafael glacier and the markers tallying its losing battle against global warming.

"How can we stop this," asked German visitor Herman Kirst, 70, reflecting on the 100 meters (yards) that the glacier has shrunk this year, and every year since Captain Luis Kochifas began ferrying tourists to this spot in 1978.

"How sad, how devastating it is to think that all this, one day, could disappear," added Kirst, after being told the 30,000-year-old glacier has receded a total of 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) since 1871.

Global warming, Chilean scientists say, has done the most damage to the glacier, which lies 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) south of Santiago.

With the rising temperatures, more melting occurs at the face, sending huge icebergs crashing into the ocean reflecting the suns rays in blue and turquoise.

The Jigokudani Yaenkoen park opened in 1964 and since then many thousands of people from around the world have visited the park to observe the lifestyle of the Japanese Macaque.  The Japanese Macaque (Macaca fuscata) is a monkey species native to northern Japan, and is the most northern-living non-human primate, surviving winter temperatures of below -15 °C.  They have brown-gray fur, a red face, hands and bottom, and a short tail - and often seem remarkably human like.

The monkeys have a body length ranging from 80 to 95 cm.  The males weigh around 10-14 kg while the females are usually around 5.5 kg.

The park is located in the Yokoyu River valley, which flows down from Shiga Kogen.  At an elevation of 850 meters, the area is called Jigokudani ("Hells Valley") due to the steep cliffs and hot water steaming out from the earths surface.

All the time the monkeys basically just ignore their human watchers and just get on with whatever it is they want to be doing.

The babies climb on her back and stay with her for about 2 weeks before they wander away from her for good. While the babies are with the mother they also change their exoskeleton for the first time. I have seen mother scorpions eat the cast-off skin (exuvia) of her offspring.

The head of the Muslim Council of Britain has said the governments approach to terrorism is creating an atmosphere of suspicion and unease.

In a wide-ranging interview with the Daily Telegraph, Muhammad Abdul Bari said the amount of discussion relating to Muslims was disproportionate.

He cited Nazi Germany in the 1930s as an example of how peoples minds could be poisoned against a whole community.

Dr Bari also called for more emphasis on positive aspects of Muslim culture.

"If your community is perceived in a very negative manner, and poll after poll says that we are alienated, then Muslims begin to feel very vulnerable," he said.

"We are seen as creating problems, not as bringing anything and that is not good for society."

"I think it is creating a scare in the community and wider society. It probably helps some people who try to recruit the young to terrorism.

"Muslim young people are as vulnerable as any others. Under this climate of fear they will begin to feel victimised."

WASHINGTON | House Democrats said Thursday that they would send President Bush $50 billion for combat operations on the condition that he begin withdrawing troops from Iraq.

Several anti-war liberals said Thursday that they were willing to get behind the measure as long as Democrats would not send Bush the money anyway if the bill is vetoed.

?What I don?t want to do is get on this merry-go-round where we try to end this war and negotiate it down to a blank check,? said Rep. Jim McGovern, a Massachusetts Democrat. ?It?s time to play hardball.?

The $50 billion included in the bill represents about a quarter of the $196 billion requested by Bush. It would finance about four months of combat, Pelosi said.

After December 2008, Pelosi said, troops left behind in Iraq should be restricted to a narrow set of missions: counterterrorism, training Iraqi forces and protecting U.S. assets.

But researchers at Cornell University found that overweight people who choose low-fat versions of snack foods rather than the regular kinds consume on average twice as many calories. "The terms fat-free or sugar-free can create a green light effect, triggering people to eat more," says Cynthia Sass, MPH, RD, Preventions nutrition director. But many fat-free foods have about the same number of calories (or more) as their full-fat counterparts. Case in point: One variety of oatmeal-raisin cookie has 107 calories and 9 g of sugar, and the fat-free version of the same brand has 106 calories plus 14 g of sugar.

The British Medical Association (BMA) wants a public debate about the risks and benefits of using drugs to improve memory and concentration, sometimes called "cognitive enhancement."

The ability of prescription drugs and medical procedures to improve intellectual performance is likely to increase significantly in the next 20 to 30 years as technology advances.

"However, given that no drug or invasive medical procedure is risk free, is it ethical to make them available to people who are not ill?"

Surreptitious use of brain-boosting prescription drugs is particularly common in the United States and likely to increase in Britain, the BMA said.

Popular choices include drugs for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, such as Ritalin, or methylphenidate, made by Novartis AG

Advertising agencies must experiment creatively, become brokers of consumer insights, and guide allocation of advertising dollars amid exploding choices. All players must adapt to a world where advertising inventory is increasingly bought and sold in open exchanges vs. traditional channels.

The next day, Tommy Douglas, the first leader of Canadas New Democratic Party, rose in the House of Commons and called for homosexuality to be decriminalised.

Why America Will Survive George W. Bush

Americas foreign policy has been short-sighted and often self-defeating from the get-go, alternately collaborative, passive, and interventionist.

With the unstoppable ascendancy of a global capitalist economy, Mead makes the case that America, for all its past and current faults, is still the most suitable leader for this new international buoyancy and why not even our latest (unprecedented) blunders can derail such a powerful juggernaut as the American economy.

More and more so, were literally all in this together.
Otto von Bismarck saw how American blunders led to American power and allegedly said that God has a special providence for drunks, fools, and the United States of America.

Nothing in the field of international affairs is as scandalous and as perplexing as the fact of American power. From Revolutionary times to the present, virtually all observers foreign and domestic have agreed that Americans dont do foreign policy well.

Moralistic, uninformed, unsubtle, alternately isolationist and hyperactive, hamstrung by a clumsy constitutional process and a public that oscillates between fatuous idealism and ignorant bellicosity, U.S. foreign policy has been shocking the world for more than 200 years.

And, worse still, we win. For two centuries, the United States has astounded critics with its bad foreign policy--and, for two centuries, the United States has steadily risen to an unprecedented level of power and influence in the international system.

The spectacle is often surreal. The United States seems to wander nearsightedly but relatively unscathed past one hazard after another

The past seven years have given us some helpful hints on what we want to avoid in the next president. I?m starting to make a list.

Quality to avoid No. 1: Loyalty.

Whenever you read that a candidate ?values loyalty above all else? ? run for the hills.

How about if this time we try for a president who would recruit gifted people who can accomplish great things, as opposed to a room full of dopes who will never write tell-all memoirs?

The Giuliani version of loyalty, which bears a terrifying resemblance to the George W. Bush brand of loyalty, is entirely about self-protection. An administration safe beneath the loyalty cone does not have to worry much about leaks to the press, or even whistle-blowing.

People can screw up, or fail to achieve their missions, knowing the guy at the top will protect them as long as they put his well-being ahead of anything else. When disaster strikes, the whole world may be falling apart, but they will all be clumped together, walking north.

Some years back, leafing through a pocket Gaelic dictionary, he began looking for phonetic equivalents of the terms, which English dictionaries described as having ?unknown origin.?

Glom? seemed to come from the Irish word ?glam,? meaning to grab or to snatch

He began finding one word after another that seemed to derive from the strain of Gaelic spoken in Ireland, known as Irish. The word ?gimmick? seemed to come from ?camag,? meaning trick or deceit, or a hook or crooked stick.

Mr. Cassidy, 63, began compiling a lexicon of hundreds of Irish-inspired slang words and recently published them in a book called ?How the Irish Invented Slang,? which last month won the 2007 American Book Award for nonfiction, and which he is in New York this week promoting.

Like Melissa Storey, Bill Adams, who has been leading war protests in Lancaster, Pa., wrote Mr. Bush a letter ? not to praise the president, but to question the military?s account of the death of his son, Brent.

But when the president met families of the fallen that day in Lancaster, it did not escape Mr. Adams?s notice that he was not among them.

Oil - The scramble for Africa (Howard University, U.S.)

    clipped by: pickinjava
clippers remarks: Graham Saul is a good critical resource on oil.
"Africa is becoming a center of attention," said Austin Thompson, one of two PEAC founders. "Its like a race for energy. The U.S. is looking to increase the amount of oil imported from Africa. China is already there."

    And Graham Saul agrees.

"Theres a boom going on, specifically in the Niger-Delta," he said. Saul, a former international programs director for Oil Change International, said that, while countries in Africa are rich in natural resources, not everyone benefits.

"The situation in Sudan has to do with the oil there," he said. "China is the biggest obstacle."

In the Middle East, this scramble has manifested and, according to Saul, can serve as a preview for a possible future in Africa. "Not only is the United States fueling the conflict [in Iraq], but we are the conflict. If oil hits $100, we might see a greater willingness of countries going in militarily and profiting," Saul said.

Saul comfortably referred to this growing trend as neo-colonialism or a rush for Africa.

    It fired her.

After 30 years working for Taco Bell and the chains that preceded it, Shilson was fired Friday as manager of the Edina Taco Bell, dismissed without severance pay or medical benefits.

"I bawled for three days after I got fired," she says. "I was the most loyal, dedicated employee they could have. In 30 years, I never called in sick or was late to work. Not once! And I was good at my job. Damn good."

When the cops came, she was in shock and called Doug, asking him to bring her a clean uniform. Why, he asked. "Because the one Im wearing has holes in it and theres blood all over."

Shilson says she was rated "superior" in a company performance review last spring, but that her supervisor added personal comments that she needed improvement. She says she felt she was being prepared to be pushed out.

That is the theory. Or, rather, was the theory.

PERVEZ Musharraf took a huge gamble when he declared emergency rule last week.

He raised the stakes yesterday, sending police to cordon off the house of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, just a few hours before she was due to lead a rally against the state of emergency.

Musharraf has also gambled that his main international backer, the US, wont turn against him. Its $US10.5 billion in mostly military aid has been a mainstay of his rule.

So far, the general has survived.

Bhutto, who returned to Pakistan this month after eight years in self-exile, had called for street protests against Musharrafs grab for power.

She earlier dismissed his pledge to hold fresh elections by mid-February as a distraction.

"Its too vague; its too generalised and its an attempt to break the momentum of opposition," Bhutto says.

"We think it is a good thing that President Musharraf has clarified the election date for the Pakistani people," a White House spokesperson says.

I think maybe its time to start asking the following question: What have we come to?

At issue here is whether we, as a nation, are okay with torture.

Do we even care? Do we care that torture doesnt reliably work - that the victim is liable to say anything he or she thinks the torturers want to hear just to make the suffering stop? Do we even care if, say, that victim might even be innocent, might have nothing whatsoever to do with the suspicions and suspects we have in mind? Do we care what that says about us as a nation, as a people?

Is this where we should be, as Americans in the 21st Century? Is that how we are? Seems unnecessarily and uncharacteristically mean to me. But, hey, maybe we ARE meaner people now.

Truly we are NOT who we used to be.

To me, it seems rather un-American to find torture acceptable.

If thats where we are, then the terrorists won. They wanted to change us, even pervert us and the way we lived and the way we were, and they did.

No, I was not constipated; this was not a regularity problem but a matter of technique. It seems my ass-hair had grown to such a length that tiny grogans were constantly getting tied up in the matted jungle between my asscheeks. It led to much frustration, with me KNOWING that I still had something to drop, but unable to shake the tenacious turd loose from its butthair dwelling. Eventually I would have to do two things: either reach down with some paper and try to pinch off the lingering loaf (which required careful precision to avoid smearing the creature all over my rear, especially since I had no way of seeing what I was doing) or just go for broke, start wiping, and hope that I could remove all the leftover fecal matter before the toilet paper reached its Cant-Be-Flushed threshold.

That way they would have some cover when they try to stonewall on a funding bill requiring a pullout from Iraq. As one person put it:

Ruining Our Dollar Accidentally on Purpose?

Realistically, it?s almost impossible to believe that Bush is some kind of Manchurian President, intentionally screwing up and deliberately undermining the United States. But sometimes, it?s hard not to wonder. Dan Froomkin, for example, did a nice job today describing Bush?s disastrous dollar policy.

President Bush doesn?t talk about the dollar much, but when he does, he?s got exactly one thing to say about it: ?We have a strong dollar policy.?

It?s becoming increasingly clear, however, that Bush?s ?strong dollar policy? is driving the greenback into the ground.

The dollar is hitting record lows this week amidst fears that the mortgage-market meltdown will spread to other parts of the economy and as the Chinese make noise about moving more of their investments into euros. But it is the underlying dynamics of the American economy ? continued massive trade deficits and a whopping national debt ? that have put the dollar in such a precarious position.

The results of a small study prompted the researchers to advise people who have high blood pressure or heart disease to avoid energy drinks because they could impact their blood pressure or change the effectiveness of their medications.

The drinks generally have high levels of caffeine and taurine, an amino acid found in protein-rich foods like meat and fish that can affect heart function and blood pressure, the researchers say.

While the United Methodist Church bars self-avowed practicing clergy from ordination and does not support gay unions, according to the denominations Book of Discipline, it says nothing about transgender clergy.

After considering whether to remove Phoenix from leadership, the Judicial Council decided to allow the transgender minister to stay on the job, referring to a church policy stating that a clergyperson in good standing cant be terminated without administrative or judicial action.

Pictures of the leaning tower of Pisa and the leaning church in Suurhusen, Germany

Compromised by a wooden foundation and sodden soil, the Suurhusen churchs 15th-century steeple addition tilts at a 5.07-degree angle, versus the Italian towers current 3.97 degrees, according to Olaf Kuchenbecker of Guinness World Records German office.

"When you lay photos of the two next to each other, you can see it relatively clearly," Kuchenbecker told the Reuters news agency.

The ornate 185-foot-tall (56-meter-tall) Pisa edifice, though, would tower over the 84-foot-tall (26-meter-tall) village landmark.

A woozy foundation isnt all the two landmarks have in common. Today both are mainly tourist attractions, with the Suurhusen church hosting services only on major holidays.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa was actually somewhat straightened, perhaps depriving it of Guinness fame.

The jury on Tuesday found Ted Klaudt guilty of all four counts of second-degree rape after deliberating for three hours. Klaudt, 49, could get as many as 25 years in prison for each count when he is sentenced in January.

Klaudt also is scheduled to stand trial next week for rape and other offenses in Corson County, where he lives.

The girls lived in Klaudts home as part of a program that provides foster care for young people who have no safe home to return to after completing time in juvenile reform programs.

Klaudt, a Republican served eight years in the state House from 1999 to 2006 and left because of term limits. He ran for a state Senate seat last year but lost to a Democrat.

The Good Samaritan Has Died: Chad Varah

Chad Varah, the founder of the Samaritans, died yesterday. He was 95.

Mr Varah, who set up the support group from the crypt of his church in the City of London more than 50 years ago, died peacefully in his sleep at a hospital in Basingstoke, Hants, said a spokesman for the charity.

Chad Varah, the founder of the Samaritans

The Prince of Wales, who is the Samaritans patron, said: "Chad Varah was an utterly remarkable man who founded an organisation which has saved the lives of countless people since 1953. He was an outstanding humanitarian and a great Briton."

"His instinct that a sympathetic ear could make a difference has proved to be enormously important to those who felt alone and with nowhere to turn

There are in this world, in every country, people who seem to be ordinary, but who, when meeting a suicidal person, turn out to be extraordinary.

"They can usually save lives. How? They give the sad person their total attention. They completely forget themselves. They listen... and listen... and listen, without interrupting.

Egyptian and Saudi Arabian intentions to begin or revive their nuclear programs in the face of Irans continued race toward nuclear power present an "apocalyptic scenario" for Israel as well as for the rest of the world, Strategic Affairs Minister Avigdor Lieberman told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday

remarks came a week after Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak announced a decision to restart his countrys nuclear program. On Wednesday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced that his country had begun operating 3,000 centrifuges for the enrichment of uranium

"Their intentions should be taken seriously and the declarations being made now are to prepare the world for when they decide to actually do it."

"He is part of the problem, not part of the solution," Lieberman said. "ElBaradeis behavior has not succeeded in solving anything like North Korea or Libyas nuclear programs. And instead of criticizing Iran, he finds it right to criticize Israel."

The Foreigners Gift:The Americans, the Arabs, and the Iraqis in Iraq

    clipped by: merrie
clippers remarks: Yes, a poisoned Palestinian political culture opted for Hamas in a free election in early 2006. This is what it is: an expression of the malady of Palestinian politics. The larger case for democratic reform is bigger, and nobler, than the state of Palestinian politics.
The Bush Doctrine brought about a veritable reversal in the realm of ideas: here was a conservative President asserting that freedom can travel to distant shores, that we can take it to strangers beyond, and here were his liberal critics at home falling back on a surly argument that Iraq, Lebanon, and other Arab and Islamic domains offer insurmountable obstacles to the spread of freedom.
Those in the know?and those who pretend to be?have written and spoken about the influence exercised by the Egyptian thinker and pamphleteer Sayyid Qutb (executed by the Nasser regime in 1966) on the course of modern Islamism. This is good as far as it goes. What is needed is a more sustained analysis of the depth of Egyptian radicalism

Natan Sharansky is perhaps on the mark with his observation that Bush, in holding onto his belief, is a lonely man even within his own circle of power. To come to that belief, Bush needed no great literacy in political theory. Intuitively, he grasped the connection between autocracy and terror. Norman Podhoretz?s argument on behalf of liberty reads that landscape with clarity. The peace of pharaohs and autocrats, the stability presented by despotism, is deceptive. The politics of democracy can be messy, of new democracies messier still. But we ought to have the courage of running freedom?s risks.

But oddly, Wilsonianism triumphed. ?For three generations,? Kissinger writes, ?critics have savaged Wilson?s analysis and conclusions; and yet, in all this time, Wilson?s principles have remained the bedrock of American foreign-policy thinking.?

He held out to the Arabs a respectful message: that despotism was not necessarily something fated? ?written??for them for all time.

Palestinians are still demanding that a final statement at the summit deal with the core issues (refugees, borders, Jerusalem) and provide a timetable for carrying out solutions. The image broadcast on the official Palestinian Authority television station reinforces those demands: "The message they [Palestinians] have conveyed to their people for years, and continue to convey on the eve of the [U.S.-hosted] conference, is that Palestine exists and it replaces all of Israel," PMW said.

According to PMW, the same message is prevalent throughout childrens school textbooks, childrens television programs, crossword puzzles, video clips, formal symbols, and school and street names.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice wrapped up her four-day visit to the area on Wednesday after holding a second round of meetings with both Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

China Says Poverty Bigger Problem Than Global Warming

China Signals Rejection of Emission Caps

BEIJING (AP) -- A Chinese official gave the clearest sign yet that Beijing will reject binding caps on greenhouse gas emissions at a global meeting next month, saying Friday developing countries must be allowed to raise emissions to fight poverty.

"Climate change is caused mainly by developed countries," Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui said. "They should have the main responsibility for climate change and to reduce emissions."

Beijing is about to overtake the United States as the worlds top greenhouse-gas producer. It is under pressure from Washington to accept binding limits at a meeting in Indonesia of environment ministers from 80 nations to discuss a possible replacement to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol on emission reductions.

Nations agreed in Kyoto to cut output of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases to below 1990 levels by 2012. But China, India and other developing economies are exempt.

If the international headlines over the arrest of alleged Canadian pedophile Christopher Neil has put a chill on Southeast Asian sex tourism, it isnt evident on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City. It takes all of 30 minutes to find a boy who earns his living having sex with foreigners.

Sit down at an outdoor table, order a beer and wave to the first street vendor who walks by. A sexy swing of the hips may attract admiring glances, but it is not a covert sign a woman is ready to breed, according to researchers.

A Queens University, Ontario, team examined volunteers walks and the levels of sex hormones in their saliva.

They found those with alluring walks were the furthest away from ovulation.

A British expert said the research, featured by New Scientist magazine, supported the idea women disguise their fertility to deter unsuitable partners.

    In Memory of Norman Mailer

As we constantly sink into comfort and complacency, it was Norman Mailer who would grab us by our collar and shake us into waking.

Of all the times, right now we need Norman Mailer more than ever. As the country seems poised to let the inertia for genuine change dissipate into politics as usual, who will shame us for getting comfortable at the expense of the mute suffering that is the byproduct of our current society?

Gore Vidal, with whom he frequently wrangled, once wrote: ?Mailer is forever shouting at us that he is about to tell us something we must know or has just told us something revelatory and we failed to hear him or that he will, God grant his poor abused brain and body just one more chance, get through to us so that we will know. Each time he speaks he must become more bold, more loud, put on brighter motley and shake more foolish bells. Yet of all my contemporaries I retain the greatest affection for Norman as a force and as an artist. He is a man whose faults, though many, add to rather than subtract from the sum of his natural achievements.?

    Tasty almost no-calorie noodles !!

Shirataki (shee-rah-TAH-kee) noodles are thin, low carb, chewy, and translucent traditional Japanese noodles. They are also sometimes called konnyaku noodles. Shirataki noodles are thinner than wheat noodles, do not break as easily, and have a different texture. They are mostly composed of a dietary fiber called glucomannan and contain very few calories and carbohydrates (sometimes even zero). They do not have much flavor by themselves, but absorb flavors well from other ingredients you can combine them with. Shirataki noodles are made from Konjac flour, which comes from the roots of the yam-like Konjac plant grown in Japan and China.

Shirataki noodles are packaged "wet", that is, you purchase them pre-packaged in liquid, and they are ready-to-eat out of the package. You can prepare them by boiling them briefly or running them under hot water, then combining them with other dishes, or adding things like tofu, garlic, spinach, or soy sauce to enhance the flavor.

    Are We Happier Facing Death?

Heres one for the annals of counterintuitive findings: When asked to contemplate the occasion of their own demise, people become happier than usual, instead of sadder, according to a new study in the November issue of Psychological Science. Researchers say its a kind of psychological immune response ? faced with thoughts of our own death, our brains automatically cope with the conscious feelings of distress by nonconsciously seeking out and triggering happy feelings, a mechanism that scientists theorize helps protect us from permanent depression or paralyzing despair.

It might explain the shift toward more positive emotions and thought processes as people age and approach death, and the preternaturally positive outlook that some terminally ill patients seem to muster. Though it looks a lot like old-fashioned denial, thats not the case, says lead author Nathan DeWall. Its not that "I know Im going to die, but I just con myself into thinking Im not
