Veterans make up one in four homeless people in the United States, though they are only 11 percent of the general adult population, according to a report to be released Thursday.

And homelessness is not just a problem among middle-age and elderly veterans. Younger veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan are trickling into shelters and soup kitchens seeking services, treatment or help with finding a job.

The Veterans Affairs Department has identified 1,500 homeless veterans from the current wars and says 400 of them have participated in its programs specifically targeting homelessness.

In comparison, the VA says that 20 years ago, the estimated number of veterans who were homeless on any given night was 250,000.

A Queens University, Ontario, team examined volunteers walks and the levels of sex hormones in their saliva.

They found those with alluring walks were the furthest away from ovulation.

The women who were most fertile at the time of the experiment walked with fewer hip movements and with their knees closer together.

She now thinks the findings tally with other research suggesting that women want to conceal their ovulation from males other than their chosen partner.

A sexy walk would be too obvious, so women are thought to use changes in smell and facial expressions that can be experienced only at close range.

Terror laws incoherent - no charges to be laid

Solicitor General David Collins QC announced this afternoon that cases against 12 of the Urewera 16 did not warrant prosecution under the Terror Suppression Act, but could go ahead under the Arms Act.

A fashion show took place in New York City today. Thats not news, of course. But this time, there were no models on the runway.

Using technology reminiscent of the "Halodeck" on Star Trek, Target stores staged the Model-less Fashion Show, using high-definition "holograms" on a virtual runway.

The two-day show at Grand Central Terminals Vanderbilt Hall, ending Nov. 7, features mens, womens, bridal and maternity collections.

"This is the first time a fashion show will be completely produced with hologram technology, without models, without a runway and easily accessible to all fashion fans," said Trish Adams, the companys senior vice president.

A few years ago at the Seattle Special Olympics, nine contestants, all physically or mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash. At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with a relish to run the race to the finish and win.

All, that is, except one boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of times and began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back. They all turned around and went back. Every one of them.

Surfer Todd Endris needed a miracle. The shark ? a monster great white that came out of nowhere ? had hit him three times, peeling the skin off his back and mauling his right leg to the bone.

That?s when a pod of bottlenose dolphins intervened, forming a protective ring around Endris, allowing him to get to shore, where quick first aid provided by a friend saved his life.

?Truly a miracle,? Endris told TODAY?s Natalie Morales on Thursday.

The dolphins, which had been cavorting in the surf all along, showed up then. They circled him, keeping the shark at bay, and enabled Endris to get back on his board and catch a wave to the shore.

Former AT&T technician and wiretapping whistle-blower Mark Klein traveled to the nations marble halls of power Wednesday, hoping to persuade lawmakers not to crush the lawsuit against AT&T that is largely based on  his allegations that his former employer wiretapped the internet on behalf of the government.

Those documents detail how AT&T diverted portions of fiber optic internet cables, -included powerful snooping hardware and a fat fiber connection out of the room.

An American couple have survived unscathed after their minivan was crushed - by a falling cow.

Giuliani wins endorsement from Pat Robertson

Rudolph Giuliani scored a big coup on Wednesday by winning the support of Pat Robertson, who, as one of the nations best-known televangelists, could help Giuliani reassure Republican voters who have been wary of his support for abortion rights.

Robertson, the founder and chairman of the Christian Broadcasting Network, said in endorsing Giuliani in Washington, that he believes "the overriding issue before the American people is the defense of our population from the blood lust of Islamic terrorists" and praised Giuliani as a "true fiscal conservative."

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - Thousands of bananas washed up on two Dutch North Sea islands on Wednesday after at least six containers fell off a cargo ship in a storm and one burst open, a local official said.

"I think everybody on the island has a bunch now," said Gossen Buren, a shipping official at the local lighthouse.

Buren said he hadnt tasted any of the bananas to see if they were salty. "It still looks pretty green," he said.

A tug of war has broken out between Congress and the Bush administration over legislation that would put private security contractors on a shorter legal leash.

The White House and Justice Department are trying to limit the reach of U.S. criminal law on Blackwater and other private war contractors. With a potential veto threat looming, several senators now want to alter the bill in a way that satisfies both the Bush administration and members of the House of Representatives, who overwhelmingly passed similar legislation last month.

BAGHDAD, Nov. 7 ? The Iraqi interior minister said Wednesday that he would authorize raids by his security forces on Western security firms to ensure that they were complying with tightened licensing requirements on guns and other weaponry, setting up the possibility of violent confrontations between the Iraqis and heavily armed Western guards.

Interior Minister Jawad al-Bolani said Iraqi forces would ensure that new licensing rules were being observed.

The tightening of the requirements followed a shooting in September by one of those firms, Blackwater, that Iraqi authorities said left 17 Iraqis dead.

US fears Israeli strike against Iran over latest nuclear claim

A claim by President Ahmadinejad that Iran has 3,000 working uranium-enriching centrifuges sent a tremor across the world yesterday amid fears that Israel would respond by bombing the country?s nuclear facilities.

Military sources in Washington said that the existence of such a large number could be a ?tipping point?, triggering an Israeli air strike. The Pentagon is reluctant to take military action against Iran, but officials say that Israel is a ?different matter?. Amid the international uproar, British MPs who were to have toured the nuclear facility were backing out of their Iran trip.

The US and Western allies believe that Iran is using its civilian nuclear programme as a cover for weapon development. Tehran says that it merely wants to generate electricity.
