Many are convinced that the West is making war on Islam, but after decades of American support for dictators in their part of the world, and centuries of having their religion misunderstood, they don?t expect much. Far from hating America, my friends are more likely to worry that Americans hate them. They see how Muslims are portrayed in our media. We see angry men burning flags, raising rifles in the air, throwing rocks and blowing things up. In Morocco they refute this with warmth and candor, and exaggerated shows of hospitality. Yet they worry about us. Is America really a democracy? Are we morally lazy? How we can accept what has been done in our name? They wonder how could we have invaded a nation that was no threat to us. Why haven?t we challenged our leaders? Are we really that spoiled? Are we so concerned with our own comfort, that we tune out what is happening just because it is far away?

The oil price has risen to $96 a barrel; the gold price has risen above $800 an ounce. That is the world in a nutshell, an international crisis, a credit crisis, an energy crisis and a dollar crisis. Pakistan remains an important, pivotal country. It is an essential bastion of the American position in the Middle East. Without Pakistan as an ally, it is hard to see how the US could maintain its position in Afghanistan. it would be a disaster if the United States lost a position of influence with the Arab oil-producing countries. Trouble in Pakistan means trouble for the oil market. same pressures that have threatened Musharraf?s position have undermined Chuck Prince?s position in Citigroup. Colliding Dead Stars Set Off Massive SupernovaTwo small but dense burned-out stars appear to have spiraled into each other and exploded, according to a new study. The blast offers some of the strongest evidence yet for a theoretical model for supernovas created by white dwarfs?the hot cores left behind when stars similar to our sun die. The finding could also have implications for studies of dark energy, a mysterious force thought to make up more than 70 percent of the universe. Most white dwarf supernovas are believed to occur when the tiny dead stars siphon so much material from a larger, nearby star that they trigger a massive fusion reaction and explode. The same explosion could also occur, however, if two white dwarfs merged, said Malcolm Hicken, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Current models classify supernovas as either Type I or Type II, the major difference being that only Type II blasts show evidence of hydrogen. The URL for this article is in the "crime" category. The liberals worldwide remain in a state of denial that there is a world war on. Al-Qaida is deliberately "grooming" children and young people to carry out terror attacks in Britain, the head of MI5 warned today. In his first public speech since becoming director-general in April, Jonathan Evans said the security service was facing "the most immediate and acute peacetime threat" in its 98-year history. Addressing a Society of Editors Conference in Manchester, he said the number of individuals in Britain identified by MI5 as having links with terrorism had risen from 1,600 last year to at least 2,000. Mr Evans warned they were part of a "deliberate campaign" being waged against Britain by al-Qaida - which was extending its tentacles across the Middle East and Africa. "Terrorist attacks we have seen against the UK are not simply random plots by disparate and fragmented groups," he said. "The majority of these attacks, successful or otherwise, have taken place because al-Qaida has a clear determination to mount terrorist attacks against the United Kingdom. Our mainstream liberal propaganda machines want us to keep thinking we are in a quagmire, the army is broken, hope is lost, and its all Bushs fault. Hello.... we are winning this war!!! Thanks to our resolute President and our magnificent armed forces.
IT is whispered about at the margins of meetings, and discussed in Washington parties where rumour is passed around with the wine and canapes. It even appears, fleetingly, to be fact. "The day nobody died from violence in Iraq" is a date that has been much anticipated in the White House - where US President George W. Bush is desperate to hail the success of his surge of 30,000 troops this year. But no one can quite say when this event occurred. "It was some time this week, wasnt it?" says a senior military source. "Or maybe last week." Another diplomatic official confidently asserted that there were "at least two such days this month". When, exactly? "Not sure," he replied. Such vagueness may be concealing a truly significant transformation on the ground in Iraq. There have certainly been several days in the past month when no US or British soldiers were killed. Ellis left open the possibility that the Bush administration may challenge the subpoenas on the grounds they would reveal privileged information. But the judge said his ruling Friday "may trump a valid governmental privilege." If so, that could force the government to decide whether to allow the testimony or drop the case. Neither the State Department nor the Justice Department had an immediate comment. Among those subpoenaed in the case were: former Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz; former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage; and Marc Grossman, former undersecretary of state for political affairs. Alzheimers linked to cold soresclipped by: BobbyDelrayEvidence is building that the cold sore virus may be linked to Alzheimers disease, an expert says. In lab tests, Manchester University found brains infected with the herpes simplex virus, HSV-1, saw a rise in a protein linked to Alzheimers. Scientists believe the discovery could pave the way for a vaccine that may help prevent the brain disorder, New Scientist magazine reported. The researchers infected cultures of human brain cells with the virus and found a "dramatic" increase in levels of the beta amyloid protein - the building blocks of deposits, or plaques, which form in the brains of people with Alzheimers. Previous research has established that HSV-1 is found in the brains of up to 70% of people with Alzheimers. University of Rochester Medical Center it was more likely to cause a problem in people who carry a mutant version of a specific gene called ApoE4 the team stained brain slices taken from dead Alzheimers patients and found DNA from HSV-1 attached to the plaques. He said he would not include or exclude any technique without first considering whether it violated the convention on torture. The procedure is banned by the US military, but has been used in an unknown number of interrogations of terrorist suspects by the CIA. The younger you are, the less likely your same-age peers are to send cards, making you stand out even more. Holiday cards are also the perfect excuse to catch up with old acquaintances, teachers, co-workers, etc. and make sure they have your latest contact information and basic demographics. ALWAYS write a personal message inside the card, and make it equally about you and about the recipient. End your card with a question and an invitation for them to contact you. I have to say that I have never spent one dollar that would mean so much to me. I am a resource officer at a school district. Last year I met one little boy in particular to whom my heart just went out to. He would talk to me every single day, and always seemed to have a smile on his face. He has a problem with stuttering extremely bad when he tries to talk. Its really hard sometimes to understand what he is saying, although he loves to tell you big tales! Well, this morning, I was talking to a couple teachers who were running the school store. He stopped by and said hello to all of us. They told me after he left that he stops every day they are there and asks them if they will be there the next day. But of course, he never has the money to be able to buy anything. I decided I would get him a little something just as a surprise. So, I picked out a pencil, a little grip thing, and a small notebook. "They are metabolically similar to Lance Armstrong biking up the Pyrenees; they utilize mainly fatty acids for energy and produce very little lactic acid," said Richard W. These genetically engineered mice also eat 60 percent more than controls, but remain fitter, trimmer and live and breed longer than wild mice in a control group. Lest we forget, there IS a TV personality seriously running for president, who announced his candidacy on a comedy talk show on the same network that carried his own program. By running his fiercely ignorant, populist, right-wing TV persona in the race Colbert satires the right wing preference for an unqualified everyman, and suspicion of education, experience and intelligence. Look at their criticisms of not just Gore or Kerry, but also Dukakis, Mondale, Carter, McGovern, all the way back to Adlai Stevenson! What makes this satire so sad is that there is just such a person actually running! Apparently, Democrats know running a TV personality is a joke, Republicans take it seriously. Since it?s hard to take Mr. Colbert?s campaign seriously ? he has said he is willing to consider Larry Craig as a running mate ? it?s a little hard to take the complaints seriously. But the thing is, they?re right in a way. If a television personality who is not a comedian were to run for President, it could be a serious candidacy (and we can think of a few we?d be seriously worried about), using the exposure given to him by his television network to campaign and win votes. The White House shrugged off the ultimatum, saying the information is off-limits under executive privilege and that the aides in question -- White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten and former presidential counselor Harriet Miers -- are immune from prosecution. Congressional Democrats nonetheless submitted their 102-page report, and a Republican rebuttal, to the House clerk on Monday afternoon. Because of extreme groups like Earth First, "Eco-terrorism" becomes a major concern for Bush in his third term. 3. Moderate environmental groups are conflated with the radical ones, meaning everyone who ever signed a Green Peace petition or wears a hemp "head covering" is a suspect terrorist. Paul, the Texas congressman with a Libertarian tilt and an out-of-Iraq pitch, entered heady fundraising territory with a surge of Web-based giving tied to the commemoration of Guy Fawkes Day.

Paul advocates limited government and low taxes like other Republicans, but he stands alone as the only GOP presidential candidate opposed to the Iraq war. He also has opposed Bush administration security measures that he says encroach on civil liberties.

Ms. Fleiss also tried to make Dirty Laundry, which opened last summer, a more pleasant place to wash clothes than the average laundry, eschewing plastic tables chained to hard-backed chairs for wooden tables, ceiling tiles that resemble those found in fancy hotel lobbies and the casino-themed walls. ?If you?re doing laundry,? she said, ?you can have a little fantasy. ?Hey I?m going to win a $20 million jackpot.??

Chem Lab: Sea Urchin Eggs Plus Marijuana Equal Amazing New Drugs
Chemists have created a collection of molecules that may have effects superior to marijuana. They are hybrids of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient in weed, and anandamide, the euphoria-causing chemical found in sea urchin eggs.
Researchers intend to use the hybrids as tools to better understand the endocannabinoid system, which partially controls pleasure and pain signals.
Anandamide starts working faster than its marijuana-derived counterpart, but it is more quickly destroyed by the body. A fusion of the two chemicals may last longer while maintaining an equal or stronger effect.
Toward the end of the study, they gave the best experimental chemicals to mice. Small amounts of the most potent molecule prevented them from pulling their tails away from a hot surface. That test, called a tail-flick assay, showed that the new drug is a rather powerful painkiller.

A Top Sicilian Mafia Boss Is Held, Italy Says

The man identified as the Mafia boss, Salvatore Lo Piccolo, was arrested and his son Sandro and two other people were detained during a raid on an isolated villa outside of Palermo, the police said.
The four, all of whom are on Italy?s 30 most-wanted list, were holding a meeting when their hide-out was surrounded by some three dozen police officers, according to the Palermo police chief, Giuseppe Caruso. The four gave themselves up after officers fired warning shots in the air.
Mr. Lo Piccolo, 65, has been on the run since he was convicted of murder in 1983. According to Mr. Caruso, he took over the top Mafia post after the arrest in April 2006 of the so-called boss of all bosses at the time, Bernardo Provenzano.

At the heart of their grievances is the companys "closed system", which prevents third parties adding their software to Apple products.

American software developer Wil Shipley has claimed some fans feel the company has turned against them.

Climate change: Rising tides

An apocalyptic vision of a deluged Britain is one of the most potent, chilling and seductive images to emerge from the debate about climate change.

The power of such pictures helps account for the success of Al Gore?s Oscar-winning environmental documentary, An Inconvenient Truth; its warnings over rising sea levels helped win the former US Vice-President a Nobel Prize.
A Doomsday scenario, such as our map of Britain after a 60m rise in sea levels (inset), is highly unlikely - it would involve the bulk of the planet?s ice melting. But a rise of just a metre or more would wipe out the Norfolk Broads and the Wash, boosting the risk of devastating storm surges.

Police said it all started when the man crashed his car into a pole and started banging on the door of a nearby house. After he kicked in a window, when homeowner Leroy Bruce shot him.
Bruce said the man ran off and left his pants and other clothing behind. The bleeding suspect fled to a McDonald?s and threw a rock through the front window.
Witness Lisa Fuqua told WMC-TV that the man was easy for police to identify and that he ?had to be on some high-powered something.?
The suspect, who wasn?t identified, was taken to the Regional Medical Center. Police said they?ll charge him when he?s released.
Officers said when they found the man at the restaurant, he had stripped to his shirt and undershorts.
The search for Jesus
clipped by: pigboomA drunk stumbles upon a baptismal service on Sunday afternoon down by the river.
He proceeds to walk down into the water and stand next to the preacher. The minister turns and notices the old drunk and says, "Mister, are you ready to find Jesus?"
The drunk looks back and says, "Yes, Preacher, I sure am."
The minister then dunks the fellow under the water and pulls him right back up. "Have you found Jesus?" the preacher asked.
"Nooo, I didnt!" said the drunk.
The preacher then dunks him under for quite a bit longer, brings him up and says, "Now, brother, have you found Jesus?"
"Noooo, I have not, Reverend."
The preacher in disgust holds the man under for at least 30 seconds this time, brings him out of the water and says in a harsh tone, "My God, man, have you found Jesus yet?"
The old drunk wipes his eyes and says to the preacher, "Are you sure this is where he fell in?"

If this is true, how and why did this curious custom come about?
This information from The First Sex by Elizabeth Gould Davis (Penguin 1971) provides an answer:
?Joan, a handsome young English girl made her way to Athens disguised as a monk... armed with a degree in philosophy, she came to Rome where Pope Leo IV made her a cardinal. Upon Leo?s death in 853 Joan was elected Pope by her fellow cardinals.
The Catholic Encyclopaedia goes on to say, ?she served as Pope for two years, four months and eight days, when she was discovered to be a woman and stoned to death (she gave birth during a papal procession)?...

The hundred-foot white cross atop the Immanuel Baptist Church in downtown Wichita, Kan., casts a shadow over a neighborhood of payday lenders, pawnbrokers and pornographic video stores. To its parishioners, this has long been the front line of the culture war. Immanuel has stood for Southern Baptist traditionalism for more than half a century. Until recently, its pastor, Terry Fox, was the Jerry Falwell of the Sunflower State ? the public face of the conservative Christian political movement in a place where that made him a very big deal.
With flushed red cheeks and a pudgy, dimpled chin, Fox roared down from Immanuel?s pulpit about the wickedness of abortion, evolution and homosexuality. He mobilized hundreds of Kansas pastors to push through a state constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, helping to unseat a handful of legislators in the process.

Mum dies upholding Jehovahs Witness blood oath
A WOMAN died within hours of giving birth to twins because, as a Jehovahs Witness, she was not allowed to accept a blood transfusion.
Emma Gough, 22, suffered severe blood loss after giving birth to a boy and a girl at the Royal Hospital in Shrewsbury, in the West Midlands of England, 10 days ago.
But the family refused to do so.
"We cant believe that she died after childbirth in this day and age, with all the technology there is.
"What makes it even more sad is Emma had time to hold and start to bond with her twins before the complications set in."

Largest extrasolar planetary system discovered
clipped by: MohirLargest extrasolar planetary system discovered

A fifth planet has been discovered around a nearby star, making it the largest planetary system known outside our own. The planet appears to be a gas giant like Saturn, but scientists say any large moons it may have could potentially host life, since the planet lies in the "habitable" zone around its star, where liquid water can exist.
The planet was discovered around a star called 55 Cancri that is about 41 light years away from Earth and is slightly cooler and dimmer than our own Sun.
The 55 Cancri system was already known to include four other planets, including three giant planets that orbit the star closer than Mercury orbits the Sun. The fourth is four times as massive as Jupiter and orbits at about Jupiters distance from the Sun.
All of those planets were discovered by the way their gravity tugs on the parent star, a technique called the radial-velocity method.

Catholic League Overboard in Criticism?
clipped by: AtlLiberalclippers remarks: The clip is a short excerpt from the interview. It addresses a point that we see over and over again these days from the Religious Right. Their primary focus is to make their form of Christianity a State religion. Luckily, the Constitution as prevented this from happening. To be fair, a majority of these folks probably want this to happen because they are genuinely troubled for what, to them, appears to be a moral collapse in the US. They think that a return to an imagined past is the answer to restore their world back to equilibrium. These simplistic desires are often the fuel that powers many of these unfounded protests. Reasoning and logic have no effect on this close minded thinking.

Island emerges in Indonesian volcano crater
clipped by: caissie_tab
"The island was visually captured by our CCTV (closed-circuit television) on Sunday, with smoke now pluming up to one kilometre (half a mile) from it," volcanologist Saut Simatupang told AFP.
He estimated that the 100-metre (-yard) long island loomed 20 metres above the surface of the crater lake. The temperature of the lake has soared so high it has broken measuring instruments, he said.
"We still cannot determine whether (the island) is new product or old lava from the 1990 eruption that had solidified at the bottom of the crater lake," more or less acting as a cork, he said.
It appeared to have been pushed up Saturday night, when volcanologists mistakenly thought an eruption was occurring so they abandoned their posts.
