I know it kills our food budget if we try to come anywhere near recommended standards. Imagine how it affects the REALLY poor! Fruits, Vegetables May Break a Low-Income Familys Budget ![]() A healthy diet incorporating fruits, vegetables and whole grains may be out of reach for low-income families. (PhotoDisc ) We tend to blame the obesity epidemic in the United States on people making the wrong lifestyle choices -- for example, eating a Big Mac instead of carrot sticks or Twinkies instead of an apple. New research shows, however, that the price of healthy food may be too high for many low-income families to afford, and experts say the government needs to step in. A new study published in the journal of the American Dietetic Association finds that a low-income family would have to devote 43 to 70 percent of its food budget to fruits and vegetables to meet the 2005 Dietary Guidelines, which recommends five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables a day. "Most Americans fall short of the recommended servings," says Milton Stokes, a registered dietitian and a spokesman for the American Dietetic Association.
Six good eating habits that will help prevent cancerclipped by: BobbyDelrayclippers remarks: Do you think you could limit yourself to 11 ounces of red meat a week? Among the eight steps the 517-page report recommends are six that relate directly to diet. Top of that list: two-thirds of every meal should be made up of plant-based foods, such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables and beans. Other dietary recommendations include limiting intake of "energy-dense foods," foods that contain high amounts of fat, sugar or calories, such as fried foods, hamburgers and soft drinks. Consumption of alcohol, red meat and processed meats were also linked to elevated cancer risk. The report advocates eating no more than 11 ounces of red meat per week, and no more than one alcoholic drink per day for women, and two per day for men. The panel specifically advocated abstinence from all processed meats, such as bacon, ham and other lunchmeats. They were unable to find a level of consumption that could be considered safe. the report also recommended being physically active at least 30 minutes every day. Tobacco should be avoided altogether. What if /dev/random (the standard random number generator on many UNIX-like operating systems) happened to spit that number out one day? Would you be guilty of a crime? Another said "link Iraq to Iran. Iran is the concern of the American people, and if we fail in Iraq, it will advantage Iran". He also urged staff to produce "bumper sticker statements" to rally the public around the war. The newspaper reported that his emails were so numerous they were called "snowflakes". They are part of a group of Christian students on the Tempe campus who are praying 24 hours a day for 21 days. All through the day and night, they pray outside the Danforth Meditation Chapel, their stillness and quiet in marked contrast to the nearly constant rush of the 51,000 students on the campus. Most students walk by, oblivious of the spiritual event in their midst. But every once in a while, a student will slowly step forward and start praying. "Thats when its really great. We get caught up in the busyness of our lives," said Chris Ngai, who organized the event. "Its a place where people can speak to God and see the beauty of everything around them." "Astronomers are looking for two things in a telescope," explained Dr John Hill of the University of Arizona and the technical director of LBT. A RACIST: A racist is one who is both privileged and socialized on the basis of race by a white supremacist (racist) system. The term applies to all white people (i.e., people of European descent) living in the United States, regardless of class, gender, religion, culture or sexuality. By this definition, people of color cannot be racists, because as peoples within the U.S. system, they do not have the power to back up their prejudices, hostilities, or acts of discrimination. "Wake up and smell the condom!" ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia ? A U.S.-based charity is hoping to fight the spread of AIDS with a unique product that appeals to coffee mania in the country that claims to have invented the drink: java-scented condoms for Ethiopia. Washington D.C.-based DKT International says the novelty product addresses a serious issue. Ethiopia has an AIDS rate of 2.1 percent, and in the capital it is more than 7 percent, according to government estimates. Andrew Piller, director of DKTs local chapter, said the aim of the coffee condoms was not to make money, but to make condom-users more comfortable. DKT has noted some users complaints about the latex scent of plain condoms, and has also tried to market condoms in other parts of the world tailored to local tastes, including those scented with the infamously stinky durian fruit in Indonesia and sweet-corn fragranced condoms in China. U.S. military courts have in the past prosecuted soldiers of other countries for using waterboarding on American troops..." Bush and his advisers opposed passage of that law a few years ago, presumably wishing to reserve the right to inflict all those things in the United States secret overseas prisons. Having lost that fight, though, they devised a neat device to circumvent the new law: The president simply signed secret executive orders declaring that none of the CIAs or the Pentagons "enhanced techniques" fall within the laws definitions. Members of Congress, who thought they were banning torture when they passed the law, were unhappy to hear about the secret orders, and said so." The torture called waterboarding is a pretty violent business. The torturer straps down the victim, feet elevated above the head, then covers the subjects face ? often with cloth or cellophane ? and pours water onto it. This triggers the gag reflex, persuading the mind that the body is drowning, provoking an atavistic terror. The straining and flailing against the restraint straps can sometimes break bones. If the torture is protracted, lung and brain damage can occur. Now. This would be the Bush administrations description of the same procedure: The detainee, an illegal combatant who may have intelligence valuable to the Worldwide Struggle Against Extremism, is restrained, and subjected to a robust interrogation. An enhanced interrogation technique is used, which for national security reasons must remain classified. But the detainee is not tortured, because the United States does not torture people. And the mountain pine beetle, which has proliferated because of warmer winters, has killed vast track of boreal forest in British Columbia that is also becoming a source of CO2. "I used to say this is what well expect with climate change," Flannigan says, pointing to the increasing rate of fires and insect infestation. "Now I say climate change is here." Flannigan says the new study builds on previous Canadian research, and provides a more detailed picture of how the forests carbon budget is changing. "Its a real concern," Flannigan says. "We were hoping our forests would be a carbon sink. But the more work we do the more we see they are a becoming a source because of things like disturbances." Northern wildfires in Prairie provinces blamed for rising carbon in atmosphereA huge swath of Canadas boreal forest, one of the largest storehouses of carbon on the planet, is now spewing more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than it soaks up, scientists say. "The sink has become a source," says forest ecologist Tom Gower, at the University of Wisconsin, whose team has documented an ominous shift in the "carbon balance" of the forest blanketing northern Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. "These boreal forests not too long ago were helping offset rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations by taking up carbon dioxide and storing it," Gower said in an interview. But with an increase in the frequency and size of fires in recent years, "that is no longer the case," he says. "In fact, these wildfires are actually contributing to the rising CO2 concentration in the atmosphere," Gower says. ![]() A 2001 forest fire about 200 km north of Edmonton near the town of Chisholm.Psychologists Ashamed of Torture Policyclipped by: abailartIt is with distress, and indeed shame, that we psychologists note that the American Psychological Association [APA] alone among the national health professional associations has failed to take an unequivocal stand prohibiting participation of its members in potentially abusive interrogations. (Ford would have been vice president with independent powers.) And they wont like this co-presidency, particularly because the Clinton partnership involves two characters caught in the dynamic of a strained, strange marriage. Which is why Hillarys problem goes beyond discomfort with dynastic succession. Its deep unease about a shared presidency. Forget about Bill, the bad boy. The problem is William Jefferson Clinton, former president of the United States, commander in chief of the Armed Forces, George Washingtons representative on earth. We have never had an ex-president move back into the White House. When in 1992 Bill Clinton promised "two for the price of one," it was taken as a slightly hyperbolic promotion of the role of first lady. This time we would literally be getting two presidents. The cloud hovering over a Hillary presidency is not Bill padding around the White House Its President Clinton, in suit and tie, simply present in the White House when any decision is made. The degree of his involvement in that decision will inevitably become an issue. Senator Obama, what is your favorite Bible verse?" When Obama finished his answer, Russert said to the other candidates, "I want to give everyone a chance in this. You just take 10 seconds." Predictable banality ensued. A foreign visitor unfamiliar with our presidential campaigns might have scratched her head and said, "This is how you decide who will lead your country?" Indeed it is, because the process is controlled by Tim Russert and people like him. Worlds Oldest Blogger Celebrates 108th Birthdayclipped by: mmcnatt![]() Google the words "worlds oldest blogger," and youll get no shortage of results. The bulk of the stories focus on folks in their mid-to-late 90s--mostly 95 and 96. Impressive, to be sure, but theyve got nothing on Australian great-grandmother, Olive Riley. One would be hard-pressed to find someone who might be able to snatch the title away from Riley, who, in three days, will be turning 108. A French priest has gone on trial for destroying a fresco in his village chapel on the grounds it depicted Saint Luke as an ox with testicles. The village of Saint Etienne du Gres, near the southern city of Avignon, commissioned a fresco of the Four Evangelists for the choir of its 11th-century Roman chapel. The fresco depicted Mark as a lion, John as an eagle, Luke as an ox and Matthew as an angel. But parish priest Michel Cicculo took deep offence at painter Jacques Descordes depiction of the bulls testicles, and of the angel as a woman with small, nude breasts, and in February 2006 he destroyed the entire work with a rock hammer. Cicculo, who faces two years in jail and a 30,000 Euro ($47,100) fine for destruction of property, defended his act in court. "No-one has the right to paint such horrors in a fresco," he said. Protesters Interrupt Vice President Cheneys Speechtics
clipped by: tabseyclippers remarks: 50 is better than none, but where are the rest of the "rattle those pots and pans" protesters?
Two protesters interrupted Vice President Dick Cheney during a speech at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Dallas on Friday. At the same time, demonstrators gathered outside of the hotel to protest the war in Iraq.
Cheney was giving a speech on policy issues during an event presented by the World Affairs Council of Dallas Fort Worth.
One woman wearing a shirt that read "Bring our Troops Home Now" yelled: "Out of Iraq now! Dont attack Iran."
Security escorted her out.
Minutes later, another protester stood up, waving an extended index finger at Cheney, objecting to any potential attack on Iran. He also was led out.
Outside the hotel, about 50 protesters, some donning costumes, shouted criticisms of the war and the Bush administration.
They also held signs listing troop death levels and calling for impeachment. One protester was dressed as Darth Vader, a reference to Cheney?s supposed resemblance to the movie character.

The Boy Who Refused to Die
clipped by: CrazyRedHead
When doctors found that Gabriel was weaker than his brother, with an enlarged heart, and believed he was going to die in the womb, his mother Rebecca Jones had to make a heartbreaking decision.
Doctors told her his death could cause his twin brother to die too before they were born, and that it would be better to end Gabriels suffering sooner rather than later.
Mrs Jones decided to let doctors operate to terminate Gabriels life.
Firstly they tried to sever his umbilical cord to cut off his blood supply, but the cord was too strong.
They then cut Mrs Joness placenta in half so that when Gabriel died, it would not affect his twin brother.
But after the operation which was meant to end his life, tiny Gabriel had other ideas.
Although he weighed less than a pound, he put up such a fight for survival that doctors called him Rocky.

Fake lawyer defends accused drunk driver

STAMFORD, Conn. - An alleged drunken driver will get a new trial after court officials say he was represented by a fake lawyer. Howard Seidler, 62, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was arrested Thursday when he returned to Stamford Superior Court for his clients sentencing.
"This was a terrible fraud on the court," States Attorney David Cohen said.
Court officials charged Seidler with unauthorized practice of law and criminal impersonation. He may also face charges of first-degree larceny and forgery, Cohen said.
Authorities said Seidler claimed to be a real New York attorney named Harold Weber while representing Ismet Idrizaj of Norwalk on a drunken driving charge. A jury deliberated for just eight minutes before convicting Idrizaj, who spent $18,000 on legal fees.
Prosecutor David Applegate, who tried the Stamford drunken driving case, said Seidler asked strange questions during jury selection.

"What does this trees immune system have in it that it has survived when other trees havent?" Milarch asked, leaning against a massive, shaggy trunk of a redwood hes dubbed "Grandma." He estimates the tree is at least 800 years old.
About 95 percent of the original forest has been cut down over the last few hundred years.

The thing is 2 1/2 hours long; it feels like 40 minutes.

Whether its the next great American crime movie or simply this years professional stunner will be determined over the next few months. For now, its enough to say that the story of the rise and fall of an African American drug kingpin is relentlessly told by the English director Ridley Scott ("Gladiator," "Black Hawk Down"); it just keeps on coming.
Starring Denzel Washington as Frank Lucas, a beneath-the-radar Harlem heroin impresario who puts together an astonishing organization before anyone notices, and Russell Crowe as Richie Roberts, the Jersey detective who tracks him, the movie has the aspirations of a crime-and-punishment epic, a superb feel for time and milieu and an almost subliminal feel for myth.

The retired general who served as President Bushs special envoy to deal with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) said the United States has failed to keep its promises to Turkey to confront the Kurdish terrorist group, and Turkey may feel that it has no choice but to attack the PKKs sanctuary in northern Iraq.
In his first extended comments since his departure, Ralston told McClatchy Newspapers that the United States is unwittingly "driving, strategically, the Turks and the Iranians together" because both nations share concerns about violent Kurdish separatist groups.
"The U.S. government should make good on the commitments they have made to the Turks," Ralston said.
