Tags: cool Obesity not individuals faultclipped by: zizzy![]() It is said we live in an obesogenic environment Individuals can no longer be held responsible for obesity so government must act to stop Britain "sleepwalking" into a crisis, a report has concluded. The largest ever UK study into obesity, backed by government and compiled by 250 experts, said excess weight was now the norm in our "obesogenic" society. Obesity, the authors concluded, was an inevitable consequence of a society in which energy-dense, cheap foods, labour-saving devices, motorised transport and sedentary work were rife. In this environment it was surprising that anyone was able to remain thin, Dr Susan Jebb of the Medical Research Council said, and so the notion of obesity simply being a product of personal over-indulgence had to be abandoned for good. "The stress has been on the individual choosing a healthier lifestyle, but that simply isnt enough," she said. A mandate for change will be difficult because it has to be preceded by an understanding of the dangers of obesity Space Shuttle Launch Despite Heat Shield Worriesclipped by: Marcarielclippers remarks: I guess NASA hasnt learned its lesson on space shuttle disasters. Top NASA officials decided Tuesday to proceed with next weeks launch of space shuttle Discovery, despite worries that its heat shield could suffer catastrophic damage during flight. ![]() Discovery is scheduled to lift off next Tuesday at roughly 11:40 a.m. ET. Its mission will be devoted to building the International Space Station. At a pre-launch review last week, an independent safety team pointed out that engineers dont know the cause of tiny cracks in the panels along the front of the shuttles wings. Those panels provide protection during the spacecrafts superheated dive back to Earth through the atmosphere. Other engineers agreed last week that the cracks cause was unclear but said they were highly unlikely to lead to catastrophic "burn through." That is what happened to shuttle Columbia in 2003. Columbias panels allowed hot gases to stream into the vehicle during re-entry to the Earths atmosphere, melting the ships interior. The crew of seven was killed. How to Survive as the Family Tech Support Guy (or Gal)clipped by: splendidusOne of the most insidious pressures on tech-savvy people these days is the seemingly constant pressure to provide quick, top-quality computer and web support ? to our families. If you happen to do web design, system administration, programming, or other vaguely computer-related work as part of your job, the pressure is magnified all the more. Bonus Tip: install LogMeIn Free on all your family member?s computers and link them to your account. Then you?ll be able to log in to their computers from home and work on it just like you would if you were in front of the computer itself. This is obviously no good for problems when the computer won?t boot or there?s a hardware problem, but for little things like setting up email, updating a program, or troubleshooting a network connection, it?s just the thing. And it?s free. Swearing at work helps employees cope with stress, academics at a Norfolk university have said. A study by Norwichs University of East Anglia (UEA) into leadership styles found the use of "taboo language" boosted team spirit. Professor Yehuda Baruch, professor of management, warned that attempts to prevent workers from swearing could have a negative impact. But Professor Baruch discouraged swearing in front of customers. Maintaining solidarity He said: "In most scenarios, in particular in the presence of customers or senior staff, profanity must be seriously discouraged or banned. I speak from 20 years of service in uniform. And the modern soldiers and commanders know, they cant say anything that would deter or undermine any mission. American lives are at stake. Period. Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General Blasts Media for Biased Iraq War Reporting When retired Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez spoke before the Military Reporters and Editors Association he chastised the media?s reporting on the war in Iraq. He nailed reporters for what he said was "unscrupulous reporting, solely focused on supporting an agenda and preconceived notions of the U.S. military." This statement received scant media attention. Instead all the headlines focused on Sanchez?s criticism of the war?s management. Maybe if he backed up his statements with specifics, it would have received coverage. Maybe not. I?m suspicious of the general?s timing. Sanchez?s statements about media bias certainly are solid, but sometimes leadership means taking a stand when it really matters ? when one is in the position to do something about it ? not a few years later. Perhaps the more important matter is why did Sanchez not speak up and speak up loudly when this was happening? Everything is being sacrificed for these wars: money, equipment in Asia, American military power globally, etc. Where and how can they fight yet another? The Pentagon is short of money for procurement, and that is what so many people in the military bureaucracy live for. The situation will be far worse in the event of a war with Iran. Many in the American military have learned the fundamental dilemma of modern warfare: More money and better weapons dont mean that you win. Many in the US military think Bush and Cheney are out of control. They are rebelling against Bush and Cheney. If you cant even name the problem--Islamofacism--you cant really fight it. the most successful example of globalization is not Starbucks or McDonald?s but Wahhabism, an obscure backwater variant of Islam practiced by a few Bedouin deadbeats that Saudi oil wealth has now exported to every corner of the earth ? to Waziristan, Indonesia, the Caucasus, the Balkans, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Toronto, Portland, Dearborn, and Falls Church. You can live on the other side of the planet and, when Starbucks opens up in town, you might acquire a taste for a decaf latte, but that?s it: otherwise, life goes on. By contrast, when the Saudi-funded preachers hung out their shingles on every Main Street in the west, they radicalized a significant chunk of young European Muslims: they transformed not just their beverage habits but the way they look at the societies in which they live. The Family Meal Is What Counts
clipped by: debbyski
Television viewing has long been linked with poor eating habits. So when University of Minnesota researchers embarked on a study of family meals, they fully expected that having the TV on at dinner would take a toll on children?s diets.
But to their surprise, it didn?t make much difference. Families who watched TV at dinner ate just about as healthfully as families who dined without it. The biggest factor wasn?t whether the TV was on or off, but whether the family was eating the meal together.
The lesson for parents, say the study authors, is that being together at dinner is what counts. Having the TV on during the meal, while not desirable, can also serve a purpose if it helps bring sullen teenagers and families to the table.

Scientists have discovered a warm and rocky "second Earth" circling a star, a find they believe dramatically boosts the prospects that we are not alone.
The planet is the most Earth-like ever spotted and is thought to have perfect conditions for water, an essential ingredient for life. Researchers detected the planet orbiting one of Earths nearest stars, a cool red dwarf called Gliese 581, 20 light years away in the constellation of Libra.
"We wouldnt be surprised if there is life on this planet," said Stephane Udry, an astronomer on the project at the Geneva Observatory in Switzerland.

Uri Avnery on the morals of Zionism
clipped by: Rasmusclippers remarks: Continuation:
The easiest way was to repress the problem altogether, ignoring its very existence: the land, we told ourselves, was empty, there was no people living here at all. That was the justification that served as a bridge over the moral abyss. [...]
Zeev Jabotinsky wrote as early as 80 years ago that it was impossible to deceive the Palestinian people (whose existence he recognized) [...]
Therefore we need an "Iron Wall" to protect the Zionist enterprise.
When Jabotinsky was told that his approach was immoral, he replied that the Jews were trying to save themselves from the disaster threatening them in Europe, and, therefore, their morality trumped the morality of the Arabs in Palestine.
Most Zionists were not prepared to accept this force-oriented approach. They searched fervently for a moral justification they could live with.
Thus started the long quest for justifications [...].
WHEN I hear mention of the "Clash of Civilizations" I dont know whether to laugh or to cry.
To laugh, because it is such a silly notion.
To cry, because it is liable to cause untold disasters.
To cry even more, because our leaders are exploiting this slogan as a pretext for sabotaging any possibility of an Israeli-Palestinian reconciliation. It is just one more in a long line of pretexts.
WHY WAS the Zionist movement in need of excuses to justify the way it treated the Palestinian people?
At its birth, it was an idealistic movement. It laid great weight on its moral basis. Not just in order to convince the world, but above all in order to set its own conscience at rest.
But this idealistic movement aimed at settling in a country inhabited by another people. How to bridge this contradiction between its sublime ideals and the fact that their realization necessitated the expulsion of the people of the land?

Turkish Parliament approves Iraq offensive

So now he runs Turkey, but beside that, with all of the statistics and calls for help the U.S. Admin has issued with regard to help with the war in Iraq, the Turkish Govts aim seems the same as the Iraqis, to "Halt the terrorist activities of the PKK in Iraq," I dont know why the Turkish action wont achieve the same as that of the US. Parliament on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a possible cross-border offensive against Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq, although the government appears willing to give diplomatic pressure on the U.S.-backed Iraqi administration more time to work.
Lawmakers voted 507-19 in favor of empowering the government to order the military to cross into Iraq over a one-year period, Parliament Speaker Koksal Toptan said. They then burst into applause.
Turkish leaders have stressed that an offensive against the rebels of the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, would not immediately follow the expected authorization.

Considering that EMI was believed to be getting the same wholesale price for the (formerly) premium-priced DRM-free iTunes downloads as it did for its regular 99-cent iTunes downloads, Apple appears to be absorbing the price cut itself. - Louis Hau

Homeland Security confiscates Songwriter Hard Drive

"And though Wallas laughing when he mentions Guantánamo, hes not joking when he adds that his record ? which hes calling Field Manual ? is "very political," packed with songs about issues both foreign ("The Score" tackles the war in Iraq) and domestic ("Everyone Needs a Home" deals with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina; "Sing Again" is about so-called "morning after" pills and whether theyre a form of contraception or abortion). Easy listening, this is not."

When Death Cab for Cutie guitarist/producer Chris Walla woke up on Monday, his "To Do" list probably read something like this:
1. Call MTV News to discuss upcoming, long-delayed solo record.
2. Call U.S. Department of Homeland Security to discuss seizure of hard drive containing said long-delayed solo record.
3. Head into town for weekly tuque fitting.
Yes, it seems that recently, Wallas solo record (which has been scheduled to come out at various points over the past, well, four years) took another step toward oblivion when the master hard drive ? containing all song files ? was confiscated by Homeland Security at the Canadian border, for reasons not abundantly clear, and sent to the departments computer-forensics division for further inspection.
If it sounds like a huge joke, Walla ensures you it isnt.

CNN reports that six years of investigations and prosecutions have turned up little evidence of Islamic jihadists at work in the United States, according to a study released Monday conducted by New York Universitys Center on Law and Security. Thanks for helping everyone see clearly what many of us already knew. There is no war on terror.
Are there terrorists? Yes, there always have been and if Bush and Giuliani hadnt failed so miserably to protect us from some Saudi criminals with box-cutters in 2001; we wouldnt have had to deal with the terrible national and personal tragedy of September 11th. But then again; Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld and Cheney needed some justification to shovel piles of money into the coffers of Blackwater, Halliburton, Bechtel and their other war profiteer buddies didnt they?
Staph fatalities, may exceed AIDS deaths
clipped by: pokketsclippers remarks: Washing the hands is one of the main habits to be remembered, particularly among medical staff. one of the most common means of transmission, is in a place like an outpatients ward, where one case of the bug, can be spread across a ward due to being carried on hands, or wiping nose, without using the antiseptic wash that is in most hospital basins. This basic habit is being stressed again in training hospitals. They may need to develop new strains of antibiotic to deal with it. There are remarkable examples of antibiotic chemicals produced naturally, by creatures for their own defense.

More than 90,000 Americans get potentially deadly infections each year from a drug-resistant staph "superbug," the government reported Tuesday in its first overall estimate of invasive disease caused by the germ.
Deaths tied to these infections may exceed those caused by AIDS, said one public health expert commenting on the new study. The report shows just how far one form of the staph germ has spread beyond its traditional hospital setting
Nature Not Nurture To Blame For Aggressive Children
clipped by: Steve McGookinYoung children have an innate tendency to be aggressive that they have to learn to control in their pre-school years if they are to avoid being violent and antisocial later in life, an expert in childhood behaviour has found.
Toddlers are born with aggressive instincts rather than learning to be violent from their surroundings. What they do have to learn, however, is how to control this instinctive behaviour in the critical years before they start school, Professor Richard Tremblay of the University of Montreal said.
"Physical aggression in children is a major public problem," he said. "It is not only an indictor of aggression in adulthood, but is also leads to other behavioural problems such as alcohol and drug abuse, violent crime and continues the cycle of abusive parenting.

The presence in premium class of double beds, strewn for the debut with rose petals, prompted The New York Times to say that the Singapore Airlines A380 "sometimes resembles a luxury hotel rather than an airliner".
The A380 departed for Singapore on Tuesday and will enter service on a Singapore-Sydney route at the end of October.

Why do leaves change colors
clipped by: kkcapricornclippers remarks:
Scientists hope studying anthocyanins will clue them into the degree to which some trees are stressed, which could provide a better picture of environmental problems early on. Like Dr. Seusss character the Lorax, which spoke for the trees, leaf color could one day tell us what trees are feeling. This is so amazing, but not unexpected. All living things have a way to express themselves; one has only to seek it.

In response to chilly temperatures and fewer daylight hours, leaves stop producing their green-tinted chlorophyll, which allows them to capture sunlight and make energy. Because chlorophyll is sensitive to the cold, certain weather conditions like early frosts will turn off production more quickly.
Meanwhile, orange and yellow pigments called carotenoids?also found in orange carrots?shine through the leaves washed out green.
"The yellow color has been there all summer, but you dont see it until the green fades away," said Paul Schaberg, U.S. Forest Service plant physiologist. "In trees likes aspens and beech, thats the dominant color change."
The red color comes from anthocyanins, which unlike carotenoids, are only produced in the fall. They also give color to strawberries, red apples, and plums.

Look What Youve Done Now Al!
clipped by: debbyskiWhile many conservative commentators and editorialists have mocked concerns about climate change, a different reality is emerging among Republican presidential contenders. It is a near-unanimous recognition among the leaders of the threat posed by global warming.
All agree that nuclear power should be greatly expanded.
The debate has taken an intriguing twist. Two candidates appealing to religious conservatives, former Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas and Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas, call for strong actions to ease the effects of people on the climate, at times casting the effort in spiritual terms just as some evangelical groups have taken up the cause.
The debate among Republicans is largely not about whether people are warming the planet, but about how to deal with it.
The issue inserted itself into the presidential campaign on Friday with the announcement that Al Gore had won the Nobel Peace Prize for work highlighting the threat posed by climate change.

Are You a Public Figure?
clipped by: ratilfarclippers remarks: Good question....
Can being mentioned on the net turn an ordinary citizen into a public figure with severely limited abilities to fight libel and defamation lawsuits? According to a Florida judges ruling -- perhaps the first of its kind in the United States -- the answer is yes.
In an Oct. 21 ruling, Florida circuit court Judge Karen Cole threw out a defamation case against two TV stations because she deemed the plaintiff -- a Jacksonville woman -- to be a public figure who had been subject to "substantial" internet debate.
In the eyes of the law, public figures are usually politicians or celebrities, who have limited rights to claim that theyve been libeled or defamed, thanks to a 1964 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Among other things, Cole said plaintiff Eliza Thomas had become a public figure because there had been "substantial public debate" regarding her and her husband on the internet.

Surprised to see my byline here, aren?t you? I would be too, if I read The New York Times. But I don?t. So I?ll just have to take your word that this was published. Frankly, I prefer emoticons to the written word, and if you disagree :(
I?d like to thank Maureen Dowd for permitting/begging me to write her column today. As I type this, she?s watching from an overstuffed divan, petting her prize Abyssinian and sipping a Dirty Cosmotinijito. Which reminds me: Before I get started, I have to take care of one other bit of business:
Bad things are happening in countries you shouldn?t have to think about. It?s all George Bush?s fault, the vice president is Satan, and God is gay.
There. Now I?ve written Frank Rich?s column too.
Atheists Stunned by Amazing Toast that Does Not Resemble Charles Darwin Whatsoever
clipped by: Jorjorclippers remarks: The image, said nonbelievers, was further evidence that there is no God, and that the universe is what it is by chance, not the hand of a creator. But religious leaders were quick to say that the toast may still be significant .
Details appeared on the Atheist News Service, based in Massachusetts, which specializes in irreligious broadcasts. They reported that the toast, served to Richard Dawkins at breakfast one Tuesday, did not reflect the image of the man who first advanced the concept of evolution.
Noted atheist P.Z. Myers, a scientist and someone who did not ever meet Charles Darwin, said he was convinced the toast did not show Darwin.
"As you can see from the photo, this toast doesnt look anything like Darwin. Just plain, ordinary toast. Maybe if you squint, you can see a squid...no, Im just kidding. It just looks like toast."
"Im sure its delicious with butter, but it doesnt even resemble Christopher Hitchens, much less the author of The Origin of Species."
