(Re-Clip=credit Rustee) The very people who invoke the name of tolerance are shown to be quite intolerant themselves," Josiah Ryan, a graduate of Hillsdale College "Free speech is about a rich exchange of ideas. Its not about having everyone in agreement. The very notion of tolerance has been turned upside down." While the documentary focuses on individuals who successfully pushed back against harassment and censorship, it is important to note that there are many students and professors who have had their academic careers damaged and even ruined, The film also touches on the dramatic ideological imbalance that currently exists among college professors and administrators. This closed mentality, reflexively hostile to viewpoints not widely held on college campuses, is front and center as the documentary opens with an appearance by a civil rights activist at the University of Michigan should instead be seen as an important vehicle for raising awareness about academias often repressive political environment.

Past research has found that gossip?those juicy tidbits of supposed fact we share about a third party?serves many purposes, including strengthening social ties, spreading social norms and helping others avoid double-crossers and other risky partners. Hearsay can be the most reliable source of information about situations for which you have no experience. But when you hear gossip thats incongruent with a person or incident you are familiar with, youd be smart to throw that chitchat out the window in favor of your own direct knowledge, right? Sommerfeld and his colleagues examined how gossip transmitted information and how it affected another persons behavior. The scientists suggest the added information might be an overload for participants, or perhaps people dont link cooperative behavior with gossip honesty. Assissination Plot In Tehranclipped by: merrieclippers remarks: Mr. Putin, in the first visit by a Russian leader to Iran since Josef Stalin met with President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill in Tehran in 1943, has cast himself as the go-between, siding with America until now in an effort to bring Iran into line with the demands of the U.N. Security Council. In his final months as president, Mr. Putin is seeking to pull off a diplomatic coup in Tehran that would settle the Caspian dispute in Irans favor in exchange for Iran being more open to the world about its nuclear plants. Mr. Putin appears to be hoping that a pacified Iran might allow NATO to postpone or even abandon its plan to site missile shield technology in European states bordering Russia, ostensibly to intercept an Iranian missile attack on Europe, an issue that has angered him. Iran is relying on the Russian leader, in concert with the Chinese communist leadership, to prevent the adoption of sterner American proposals. The Russian secret service said it intercepted details of a plot by Iranians to kidnap or kill the Russian president by suicide bomb while he is in Tehran Mr. Putin is traveling to Tehran to attend a summit of states bordering the Caspian to settle a long-standing dispute over how much of the riches of the inland sea each nation is entitled to. Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, want the undersea resources, thought to contain vast reserves of oil and gas, divided according to how many miles of Caspian coast each nation has. Iran wants the resources divided equally among the five nations, which include Turkmenistan. The Russian plan would sharply reduce Irans share of the spoils to 13% from 20%. Around the edges of the Caspian conference, Messrs. Putin and Ahmadinejad are expected to discuss ways to defuse the standoff between America and its Western allies and Iran over the enrichment of uranium and the Islamic nations nuclear ambitions. Days after the end of World War II, an American soldier entering the wreckage of Adolf Hitlers mountain stronghold found that fierce Allied bombing had left the "Eagles Nest" in ruins. Nearly everything of value was gone ? except for the Fuhrers globe. "Literally, the place is all bombed out and here this globe is sitting there on the desk," said John Barsamian, now 91. However, he is far more widely known in his reincarnation as a crusader against Social Security and Medicare. But, this is just one side of Peter Peterson. He was in the news last week for a totally different reason. It turns out, a loophole in the current tax code allows hedge fund and equity fund managers (like Mr. Peterson) to pay taxes on their compensation at a much lower rate than ordinary workers. While middle income workers like school teachers and firefighters typically face a 25 percent income tax rate, Peter Peterson and other fund managers get to pay the much lower 15 percent capital gains tax rate on the tens of millions they earn each year. We are longer-lived and with access to more knowledge and experiences than any king or pope who has come before The daily advances in science and technology lend hope that on balance things can be even better. Except that we do not feel that way. we have gained a lot of power over nature, from fertilizers and antibiotics to nerve gas and nukes With so much good fortune on the upside, the downsides are higher, too The alarming news of the present, raised to a level of continual urgency, has taught us to think of the future in terms of continual catastrophe. I began in journalism on a business newswire. I read about every crisis, mass death and refugee exodus I was a walking case of the heebie-jeebies. Experience taught that our close world of work and loved ones continued on pretty well. Perhaps we can learn to do that again in our thoughts about the future I suspect that it will be harder to gain the necessary experience, though. You only get to play out the next 50 years once. With opportunity costs, you arent supposed to be necessarily comparing choice A to choice B--you are supposed to be comparing choice A to the very best possible alternative. And that is not a trivial task. Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard to co-found Microsoft In retrospect, it was a fine decision, but at the time it must have seemed irrational. Similarly, Michael Dell dropped out of the University of Texas to start Dell Computer It was clearly the right call, but not one most 19-year-olds would want to explain to their parents. More to the point, you might be better off not taking either job, holing up for a year and writing the next Harry Potter. Should you marry this person and not that one? Should you mow your lawn or do your taxes or walk the dog? Opportunity costs are a great intellectual framework when evaluating competing options, but they doesnt always yield easy answers. On the other hand humorless extreme conservatives have even more distorted notion of Gore. Their obsessive hatred of him is even more surreal than the hype. Why do they care so much about him? Why froth at the mouth over just one politician? Klugman provides some interesting answers, but also seems a little to simplistic. I have long been puzzeled on the vhemence with which conservatives react against environmentalism, and I dont think its as simple as pure greed. What is it about Mr. Gore that drives right-wingers insane? The worst thing about Mr. Gore, from the conservative point of view, is that he keeps being right. In 2002 he warned that if we invaded Iraq, ?the resulting chaos could easily pose a far greater danger to the United States than we presently face from Saddam.? And so it has proved. But Gore hatred is more than personal. For the truth Mr. Gore has been telling about how human activities are changing the climate isn?t just inconvenient. For conservatives, it?s deeply threatening. ?We have always known that heedless self-interest was bad morals,? said F.D.R. ?We know now that it is bad economics.? These words apply perfectly to climate change. It?s in the interest of most people (and especially their descendants) that somebody do something to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, but each individual would like that somebody to be somebody else. First, notice that all the other Linux vendors are missing from the defendants list, most notably IBM. That could be because IBM has already licensed the patents in a different context. New FDA Drug Center Raises Ethical Questions
clipped by: debbyskiWASHINGTON - The Food and Drug Administration is moving with unprecedented speed to launch a drug research center to be paid for by companies it regulates.
The goal of the Reagan-Udall Foundation, approved by Congress and signed into law late last month, is to streamline and improve the development of drugs and medical devices, a goal long sought by regulators and the biggest players in the industry, such as Merck & Co., Pfizer Inc., Wyeth, GlaxoSmithKline PLC, and Johnson & Johnson.
At a time when the FDA?s reputation has been battered by perceptions that it is lax on some safety issues and too cozy with drug makers, consumer advocates say the loosely defined partnership increases the agency?s vulnerability to industry clout despite its promise of groundbreaking success. It?s an ambitious undertaking that puts regulators and companies in a relationship unlike that of any other industry.

In God We Trust
clipped by: saharaclippers remarks: And so you have it.
From Treasury Department records it appears that the first suggestion that God be recognized on U.S. coinage can be traced to a letter addressed to the Secretary of Treasury from a minister in 1861. An Act of Congress, approved on April 11, 1864, authorized the coinage of two-cent coins upon which the motto first appeared.
Several years ago, the appearance of "In God We Trust" on our money was challenged in the federal courts. The challenge was rejected by the lower federal courts, and the Supreme Court of the United States declined to review the case.
The coinage was totally secular; as clean from a mention of god as was the Constitution.
Roosevelt tried to have the motto removed, saying that it was offensive to truly religious people, that it cheapened religion, etc, but Congress refused to remove it, and so it remains to this day.
The first coins with that motto were issued in 1907.

Although supporters of making the tax ban permanent almost certainly would have enough votes to amend the bill more to their liking, it is scheduled for consideration under suspension of the rules, a procedure that bars amendments and is usually reserved for less controversial legislation.
?Basically, what the Democratic leadership has said is, ?Here?s four years, take it or leave it,? ? said Republican Robert W. Goodlatte of Virginia, cosponsor of a bill that would permanently ban Internet-access taxes. ?Congress will probably take it, but I don?t know. We?ll have to wait and see what the vote is.?

Surging to Success

Of course, even if they mentioned it, it would be sandwiched in between reports of another car bomb, even if nobody was injured...its doom and gloom on the war because they cant stand a Republican president and theyre trying to repeat the same scenario as when Nixon was in office. Because it worked, ONCE. Dont they know that some people are still around that remember all that? Thats why the protesters have people in the streets opposing them now.
There was wailing and gnashing of teeth among the lib-left, hate-America crowd recently when the Iraqi government announced that the number of deaths by violence in Iraq in September had dropped by a remarkable 50 per cent from August, showing the Surge was working

Led Zeppelin to Make Its Songs Available Digitally
clipped by: Mohir Led Zeppelin to Make Its Songs Available Digitally

It?s been a long time, but Led Zeppelin, one of the last superstar acts to refrain from selling its music online, is finally offering its catalog to digital-music fans.
The shift by Led Zeppelin, whose reunion concert in London next month has already incited a frenzy for tickets, highlights the clout of digital sales in the music market as mass merchants reduce the shelf space devoted to compact discs. Under a series of new agreements expected to be announced today, the band will make its songs available first as ringtones and similar mobile features starting this week in an exclusive deal with Verizon Wireless. Digital downloads of songs from the band?s eight studio albums and other recordings are expected to be available through Verizon and digital-music services, including iTunes, on Nov. 13.

You too can do particle physics

Public involvement in the Large Hadron Collider, a particle accelerator being built in Switzerland, has received a boost with the relaunch of the LHC@home project, which allows users to donate computer time for LHC computing projects.
Researchers hope the project will help them fine-tune the LHC to shed light on what dark matter is and why particles have mass.
LHC@home has operated sporadically since 2004 as a way for users around the world to donate spare computing time to help scientists carry out work related to the LHC.
It is modelled on the popular SETI@home software, which works as a screensaver and harnesses the computer downtime of millions of volunteers to help search through radio observations for potential alien transmissions.
Now, the project has relaunched after moving its headquarters from CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, to Queen Mary, University of London in the UK.

The salesman explained, "When I got posted in the Middle East, I was very sure to make a good sales pitch as our product was virtually unknown there. I didnt know to speak Arabic, so I planned to convey the message through 3 posters. My first poster was a man crawling through the hot desert sand, totally exhausted and panting. Second, the man is drinking our soft drink and third, our man is now totally refreshed. Then these posters were pasted all over the place" "That should have worked," said the boss. The salesman replied, "Well, not only did I not speak Arabic but I didnt realize that Arabs read from right to left." *Thanks to Pastor Tim for this joke!* http://www.cybersalt.org/cleanlaugh |

That is just one of the questions hovering over a handful of similar sightings at political events in Washington and New York.
Some suspect the insect-like drones are high-tech surveillance tools, perhaps for the Department of Homeland Security.
No agency admits to having deployed insect-size spy drones, though several US Government departments say they are trying. But several federally funded teams are growing live insects with computer chips in them, with the aim of mounting spyware on their bodies.

Dr. Robi Ludwig on why fantasizing about someone else might be healthy
Ahhh, the secret mommy crush; it?s more common than you might think, or than some married moms might want to admit. We tend to link secret crushes with our innocent youth or adolescence. These early ?puppy love? moments ultimately pave the way for our adult relationships, but crushes can happen to anyone, at any time, even to a happily married woman with kids. We?ll get into the reasons in a moment.
Here?s the good news: Having a secret mommy crush doesn?t mean you?re a bad person, about to have an affair, in a bad marriage and/or that you married the wrong guy. So why do these crushes happen?
Your Brain is Not Your Friend
clipped by: splendidusA mind is a terrible thing. Whether because of the brain?s internal structure or the way social and cultural pressures cause our minds to develop and function, in the end the result is the same: minds that are not only easily deceived and frequently deceptive in their own right, but when caught out, refuse to accept and address their errors. If you have a mind ? or even half a mind ? you might be best off losing it entirely. Barring that, though, there are a few things you should know about the enemy in your head. Before it hurts someone.
It all seems rather hopeless, but I?m optimistic. Knowing how our minds get in their own way, we can catch these behaviors and put them right ? or put them to work for us. It takes work ? individual work for sure, and in some cases the work of our entire societies. But I?m convinced we can think of ways to minimize the negative effects and maximize the positive.

?The toilet was overflowing and leaking down into the kitchen and I was yelling (for my daughter) to get the mop,? she said, according to The Times-Tribune. ?A guy is yelling, ?Shut the f--- up,? and I yelled back, ?Mind your own business.??
Her next-door neighbor, an off-duty cop, eventually called police. Herb was charged with disorderly conduct.

Science Daily ? A new report from the nations leading cancer organizations shows cancer death rates decreased on average 2.1 percent per year from 2002 through 2004, nearly twice the annual decrease of 1.1 percent per year from 1993 through 2002.
The findings are in the "Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, 1975-2004, Featuring Cancer in American Indians and Alaska Natives" published in Cancer.
A featured special section provides the most comprehensive cancer data to date for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) across the United States. Cancer incidence rates among AI/AN men and women varied two-fold among six geographic regions of the country. From 1999 through 2004, AI/AN men from the Northern Plains region and AI/AN women from Alaska and the Northern and Southern Plains regions had higher cancer incidence rates than non-Hispanic white (NHW) men and women in the same areas.

A Dead Sea
clipped by: syncopathclippers remarks: a dead sea under ONE god ....
from the articles:
The unusually warm, incredibly buoyant and mineral-rich waters have attracted visitors since ancient times, including King Herod the Great and the beautiful Egyptian Queen, Cleopatra. All of whom have luxuriated in the Dead Sea?s rich, black, stimulating mud and floated effortlessly on their backs
Names of the Sea
Known in the Bible as the "Salt Sea" or the "Sea of the Arabah," this inland body of water is appropriately named because its high mineral content allows nothing to live in its waters. Other post-biblical names for the Dead Sea include the "Sea of Sodom," the "Sea of Lot," the "Sea of Asphalt" and the "Stinking Sea." In the Crusader period, it was sometimes called the "Devils Sea." All of these names reflect something of the nature of this lake.

| Lowest Point The Dead Sea is located in the Syro-African Rift, a 4000-mile fault line in the earths crust. The lowest point of dry land on earth is the shoreline of the Dead Sea at 1300 feet below sea level. That the lake is at the lowest point means that water does not drain from this lake. Daily 7 million tons of water evaporate but the minerals remain, causing the salt content to increase. Figures for the Dead Seas salinity today range from 26-35%. |

Simultaneously, Russia and America Conduct Major War Games
clipped by: jetcloudclippers remarks: Russian strategic bombers Tu-160, Tu-95 and Tu-22M3, and Il-78 aerial tankers "will conduct flights over the Arctic region, the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans, and the Black Sea, with simulated bombing raids and firing of cruise missiles at testing grounds in northern and southern Russia," Colonel "Alexander Drobyshevsky said." (RIA Novosti).
Part of these Russian war games will be conducted in the Arctic, within proximity of US and Canadian territory (Alaska and Canadas Arctic).
"U.S. and Canadian fighter jets, including F-15s, were dispatched each time to escort the Russian planes in the exercises, which ranged from two to six aircraft,... "
The US exercise code named Vigilant Shield 2008 (VS-08) is casually presented as an "anti-terrorist drill". While under the joint auspices of the Pentagon and the Department of Defense, US Northern Command in liaison with NORAD is in charge of the operation.
VS-08 includes a massive deployment of the US Air Force and Canadas Air Force. It resembles a war-time scenario with the deployment of bombers and fighter jets over the entire North American continent extending into the Arctic.
In what visibly appears to be a confrontational scenario, the Russian war games commence one day after the launching of the US sponsored VS-08.

Putin warns US against attack on Iran

Russian leader Vladimir Putin met his Iranian counterpart Tuesday and implicitly warned the U.S. not to use a former Soviet republic to stage an attack on Iran. He also said countries bordering the Caspian Sea must jointly back any oil pipeline projects in the region.
At a summit of the five nations that border the inland Caspian Sea, Putin said none of the nations territory should be used by any outside countries for use of military force against any nation in the region. It was a clear reference to long-standing rumors that the U.S. was planning to use Azerbaijan, a former Soviet republic, as a staging ground for any possible military
"We are saying that no Caspian nation should offer its territory to third powers for use of force or military aggression against any Caspian state," Putin said.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also underlined the need for solidarity.
Soldiers mom find silly string shipper
clipped by: LisbethJDEPTFORD TOWNSHIP, N.J. - After months of frustration, a mother of a soldier in Iraq has found someone to ship about 80,000 cans of Silly String to the troops, who use the foamy substance to detect trip wires on bombs.
"I am so happy right now, I am shaking. I just think its awesome that its finally going," Marcelle Shriver said as boxes were loaded into a truck Monday afternoon.
The thousands of cans of Silly String are boxed and addressed to individual servicemen and servicewomen in Iraq. But since the string comes in an aerosol can, it is considered a hazardous material, and only certain companies can ship it.
Thom Campbell, one of the founders of Capacity LLC, a New Jersey-based shipping company experienced in hazardous materials, heard about Shrivers problem and decided to help out.
"If commanders on the ground are screaming that we need this stuff, well get it to them," Garver said.

Paulson: Tough response needed for housing
WASHINGTON - Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson called Tuesday for an aggressive response to deal with an unfolding housing crisis that he said presents a significant risk to the economy.
He also called for an overhaul of laws and regulations governing mortgage lending to halt abusive practices that contributed to the current crisis.
?We must help as many able homeowners as possible stay in their homes,? Paulson said. ?Foreclosures are costly and painful for homeowners.?
But Paulson also stated, ?When investors are relieved of the cost of bad decisions, they are more likely to repeat their mistakes. I have no interest in bailing out lenders or property speculators.?
In his most somber assessment of the crisis to date, Paulson said that the housing correction is ?not ending as quickly? as it had appeared it would and that ?it now looks like it will continue to adversely impact our economy, our capital markets and many homeowners for some time yet.?

Apple has dropped the price of its iTunes Plus songs that have no digital rights management (DRM) software protection and allow owners to move song files freely from one device to another.
The 256kbps DRM-free song files were originally priced at $1.29 per song with a lower per-song average price for buying an entire album. iTunes now seems to be offering the same files for 99 cents per song, the same price it charges for its usual 128kbps DRM versions.
"iTunes Plus has been incredibly popular with our customers, and now were making it available at an even more affordable price," Tom Neumayr, senior manager for iPods, Apple TV and iTunes, said in a statement. "Were adding over 2 million tracks from key independent labels, in addition to EMIs digital catalog, and look forward to even more labels and artists making their music available on iTunes Plus."

Gen. Abizaid on Iraq War: "Of Course Its About Oil"
A former top US general has admitted the war in Iraq was about oil. Former CENTCOM Commander General John Abizaid told an audience at Stanford University ?Of course its about oil, we cant really deny that." At the same forum Thomas Friendman said ?Weve treated the Arab world as a collection of big gas stations. Our message to them is: Guys, keep your pumps open, prices low, be nice to the Israelis and you can do whatever you want out back." General Abizaids comment comes one month after former Federal Reserve Chair Alan Greenspan wrote that ?the Iraq War is largely about oil."
