The Four Day Work Week - Why We Should Adopt It Nowclipped by: constantskepticclippers remarks: Great info on work week and history of work hours ![]() The notion of our standard work week here in America has remained largely the same since 1938. That was the year the Fair Labor Standards Act was passed, standardizing the eight hour work day and the 40 hour work week. Each Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday workers all over the country wake up, get dressed, eat breakfast and go to work. But the notion that the majority of the workforce should keep these hours is based on nothing more than an idea put forth but the Federal government almost 70 years ago. To be sure it was an improvement in the lives of many Americans who were at the time forced to work 10+ hours a day, sometimes 6 days of the week. So a 40 hour work week was seen as an upgrade in the lives of many of U.S. citizens. Link. Whats Wrong With A Nuclear Iran?clipped by: MoonowlerPresident Bush has stepped up the criticism of Iran in the past months. In fact, in the Petraeus hearings and in Bush?s latest speech about Iraq, Iran has emerged as one of the primary reasons why the U.S. cannot leave Iraq immediately: ?If we were to be driven out of Iraq, extremists of all strains would be emboldened,? Bush said. ?Iran would benefit from the chaos and would be encouraged in its efforts to gain nuclear weapons and dominate the region.? When India and Pakistan tested nuclear weapons (not power plants, weapons) in 1998, they were both pretty much welcomed into the nuclear club. There was no talk of bombing India or Pakistan, and in fact the U.S. entered into a deal with India in 2005 which lifted the moratorium on nuclear trade between the two countries, allowing India to expand its nuclear energy program with U.S. backing. This was a complete reversal of the previous U.S. policy to cut off states that acquired nuclear weapons without approval. Mouldy old mammoth hair yields DNAclipped by: pokketsScientists who pulled DNA from the hair shafts of 13 Siberian woolly mammoths say it may be possible to mine museums for genetic information about ancient and even extinct species. ![]() This 25,000 year old mammoth hair had been sitting in a museum drawer for years before scientists extracted its DNA They sequenced a DNA sample taken from mammoth hair that had been "in somebodys drawer for 200 years", and one that was at least 50,000 years old, the international team of researchers says. Now they are asking for samples of hair, feathers and even horn from museum specimens to see what they can learn from some of these ageing items. "For me the whole study is about extinction. But the renaissance may be less robust than it looks. Even if the projects are successful and building proceeds at breakneck speed, the lead times are so long and costs so high that its unclear that the US can build enough nuclear plants to make a dent in greenhouse-gas emissions by 2050. Mosquito with glowing gonads to help battle malariaclipped by: Geshizarclippers remarks: I wonder if this would work with sex offenders. A genetically engineered mosquito with glowing gonads could become a new weapon in the battle against malaria. Researchers at Imperial College London created the mosquito by attaching a gene for fluorescence found in jellyfish to a gene expressed only in a male mosquito?s sexual organs. The technique makes it relatively simple to distinguish males from females, something that has previously hindered malaria-eradication strategies. One way to control disease-carrying mosquitoes is to flood an area with millions of sterile males. They mate with the females but produce no offspring, so the insect population drops. The technique has helped control the Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata), for instance. Making the male larvae fluoresce solves the problem, and in fact makes them so easy to spot that the process can be automated. The researchers used a machine similar to a flow cytometer that had already been adapted to sort fruit flies. Artificial brain falls for optical illusionsclipped by: GeshizarA computer program that emulates the human brain falls for the same optical illusions humans do. It suggests the illusions are a by-product of the way babies learn to filter their complex surroundings. Researchers say this means future robots must be susceptible to the same tricks as humans are in order to see as well as us. For some time, scientists have believed one class of optical illusions result from the way the brain tries to disentangle the colour of an object and the way it is lit. An object may appear brighter or darker, either because of the shade of its colour, or because it is in bright light or shadows. For scientists have discovered that crocodiles, like pigeons, have a powerful homing instinct. ![]() In an extraordinary experiment, they showed that man-eating crocodiles can find their way home over hundreds of miles using the sun, the stars, the earths magnetic field and even landmarks along the way. China has banned "sexually provocative sounds" on television and pulled the plug on a show reconstructing infamous crimes by women ahead of a major Communist Party meeting next month. The order, issued by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, is the latest in a raft of measures which have included axing reality shows featuring sex changes and plastic surgery and banning talent contests during prime-time. "Commercials containing sexually provocative sounds or tantalizing language as well as vulgar advertisements for breast enhancement and female underwear are banned, effective immediately," said the SARFT notice. Students will understand the absolute consistency of mathematical principles and know that God was the inventor of that consistency. They will see Gods nature revealed in the order and precision they review foundational concepts while being able to demonstrate geometric thinking and spatial reasoning. The study of the basics of geometry through making and testing conjectures regarding mathematical and real-world patterns will allow the students to understand the absolute consistency of God as seen in the geometric principles he created. I wonder if the school teaches that non-Euclidean geometry is the work of the devil or at least of non-Christians. The Web sites account goes on like this for a while and then is followed by similar de COMMENTARY By JOHN ALLEN PAULOS School begins again, and we read more about the intrusion of pseudoscience into school science curricula in this country, particularly into the study of biology and evolution. The motive, despite the claims of proponents of intelligent design and other bogus "disciplines," has been religious. Although some of the creation scientists arguments presented have a probabilistic flavor, the mathematics curriculum has seemed somewhat resistant to this trend. Recently a number of readers have sent me course descriptions from various schools that suggest otherwise, however. The issue is complicated (perhaps too complicated for a column), but Ill also briefly discuss the relevance of evolution to a more defensible, but still flawed argument relating religion and mathematics. "No, I wouldn?t, because I think as president I would commit myself, number one, that I will be a leader that prevents discrimination on the basis of race, gender and sexual orientation," he replied. No president has refused the offer of chair of the Boy Scouts. But i can say that i needed to do a double take after reading this paragraph. WOW!! Google (GOOG) shares Friday hit an all time high. The search engine giant now has a market cap of close to $175 billion, just a few billion below Wal-Mart (WMT) (to provide just a modicum of perspective here, current Street revenue estimates for the current year are 33x higher for Wal-Mart than for Google: $377.8 billion vs. $11.5 billion). Tags: heartless At This Point, How Can You Still Believe That 19 Hijacker Story?clipped by: ReverendMarkComI realize that all politicians and all members of the mainstream press repeat the story over and over again. I realize that all politicians and all members of the mainstream media never even question a single detail of the story. I realize that there are Americans all around you who believe the story without question. But, do you realize how many Americans around you question the story so much so, that they?ve spent hours and hours researching, discovering, uncovering, learning and sharing the facts with other Americans? At this point, you have heard that there are people who don?t believe the story. You have heard that these people are conspiracy theorists, crazies and kooks. If you watch Fox News and CNN, you?ve heard that these people should be locked up in camps for having the audacity to question the US government. We?re talking about over 100 million Americans and growing. You?ve heard that these people hate Bush and they hate the government and they hate Jews. Genes tied to bad reaction in antidepressantsclipped by: LisbethJVariations in two genes may increase the likelihood that a person will report suicidal thoughts after taking an antidepressant, researchers reported yesterday. The finding could help doctors develop tests to predict which patients will do well on such medications and which will react badly. The authors of the study, which was released to reporters yesterday and will appear in The American Journal of Psychiatry on Monday, said that the findings were preliminary and would need to be verified by further testing. The study focused on reactions to only one drug, Celexa from Forest Laboratories, and found no link between the gene variations and dangerous behavior like suicide attempts. This distinction is critical, because doctors do not know whether people who report thoughts of ending their lives are at increased risk to act on them. The one patient in the study who attempted suicide consistently denied having any suicidal thoughts. Are You Going Nuts?clipped by: debbyskiAm I going crazy? It?s a phrase we?ve all uttered to ourselves from time to time, but now a new Web site helps you figure it out for sure. Check out www.sanityscore.com, which offers a simple online quiz designed to assess aspects of your mental health, including your risk for depression, anxiety and other emotional disorders. It?s worth noting that there?s no officially sanctioned test from the mental health community for measuring one?s sanity, so you shouldn?t make important health decisions based on these results. Still, I think it?s worth checking out not only for insight into your state of mind, but because it may prompt an overdue discussion with your doctor. Study shows lead-based paint problem isnt isolated to Chinaclipped by: GeshizarA multinational team of environmental and occupational health researchers has found that consumer paints sold in Nigeria contain dangerously high levels of lead. Increased globalization and outsourcing of manufacturing has drastically increased the likelihood that products with unacceptably high levels of lead are being traded across borders?including between China and Africa as well as into regulated countries like the United States. Researchers at the University of Cincinnati (UC) and University of Ibadan in Nigeria report these findings in an early Sept. 12 online edition of the journal Science of the Total Environment. Researchers believe the study?to be published in the December print issue of the journal?is the first report of new consumer paint lead levels in Africa. GARY, Indiana (CNN) -- Darius Moore says he feels vindicated after listening to police dispatch recordings that he says prove his story about a car crash that killed two of his closest friends. Moore, 17, was driving a 1994 Chevrolet Caprice early September 15 when it careened through a guardrail and into a ravine, killing 18-year-olds Brandon Smith and Dominique Green and injuring himself and 17-year-old DeAndre Anderson. None was wearing a seat belt, Moore said, and all were thrown from the car. The Socialists Are Coming!clipped by: debbyskiThe epithet of choice these days for Republicans who oppose any expansion of government?s role in health care programs is ?socialized? medicine. Our political discourse is so debased that the term is typically applied where it is least appropriate and never applied where it most fits the case. The take-home message for voters is this: Look behind the labels to judge health care proposals on their merits. Whenever you hear a candidate denounce something as a step toward socialized medicine, it probably isn?t. More likely the politician is demagoguing the issue or is abysmally ignorant of the inner workings ? and real, not ideological, failings ? of the country?s multifaceted health care system. The technology could halve the security queues for boarding passengers. More than 200 of the advanced scanners - which can detect explosives and liquids as well as guns and knives - are to be installed across major airports, including 60 at Heathrow. ![]() ![]() The new machines, produced by the Smiths Group in a ten-year £20million deal, incorporate an advanced threat identification Xray - or aTiX facility. The unit scans bags from four angles to give two detailed views in the time it takes existing systems to show a single view on the operators screen. It detects potential explosives in a secret process by measuring the atomic weight and density of materials, matching them to data for banned substances such as inflammable liquids. We are hopeful the machines will support a move back to allowing two carry-on bags.2 wow....clipped by: linz5387
The Aunt Roberta:
Yes, this cocktail has eight and a half shots in it and it still manages to taste pretty damn good because of the blackberry liqueur Who the freek was Aunt Roberta? It turns out this cocktail has an interesting history. It was invented in the 1800s by a mulatto prostitute who was running a bootleg drinks shack. Apparently, she stumbled upon it when drunk and was never able to get exactly the right measures again. One of her patrons took the recipe to New York and got rich selling it in his bar. Some friendly adviceRoughly 34 people died while drinking at Aunt Robertas place during the two years it was open. (She also served homemade moonshine and it was a pretty rough crowd.) So make sure you have life insurance before you mix this one up.
Ecosystem not the only thing struggling to recover from Agent Orangeclipped by: GeshizarThrough the forest, a clearer view of the needs of a people Phung Tuu Boi reaches down to inspect one of the spiny shrubs lined up in a row before him. A few feet away, a cow grazes serenely in this emerald valley in the hills of central Vietnam. Boi, a forester and director of the Center for Assistance in Nature Conservation and Community Development in Hanoi, points to the cow. "See this?" he says. "Very, very bad." An invisible poison clings to the soil beneath the cows muddy hoofs. During a short stretch of the Vietnam War this patch of ground served as an American Special Forces air base, and while the soldiers departed long ago, a potent dioxin from the Agent Orange that they stored and sprayed here lingers still.
