Natalie Portman is best known for her roles in Hollywood movies like Star Wars, Cold Mountain and V for Vendetta. What is less known is that she was co-author of a scientific paper on the neuroscience of child development. This is about her research.

Portman, whose real name is Natalie Hershlag, left acting to pursue a psychology degree at Harvard during 2000.

While there she was employed as a research assistant in Prof Stephen Kosslyns neuropsychology lab where she got involved in a study investigating the link between frontal lobe development and visual knowledge in infants.

Finger Length A Predictator of ?

Finger Length Helps Predict Test Exam Results, Homosexuality, Cancer, Musical Ability and Aggressive Personality -- Study Shows

Your finger length can predict how you will do on various tests in school. They can also tell if you are likely to be homosexual or straight, if you will likely get certain cancers, be a musician, writer or a scientist, or if you will have an aggresssive or passive personality. The two fingers that are important are the index finger -- the one you use to point to something -- and the ring finger.

Scientists believe that the link is caused by different levels of the hormones testosterone and estrogen in the womb -- and the effect they have on both brain development and finger length. This is nothing new, since scientists have known for many years that elevated levels of testosterone -- or other hormones closely resembling testosterone -- can cause the brains of both males and females to be more "masculine."

Mile-wide UFO spotted by British airline pilot

clipped by: diodisegno
One of the largest UFOs ever seen has been observed by the crew and passengers of an airliner over the Channel Islands.

Aurigny Airlines captain Ray Bowyer, 50, flying close to Alderney first spotted the object, described as "a cigar-shaped brilliant white light".

"It was 2,000ft up and stationary. I thought it was about 10 miles away, although I later realised it was approximately 40 miles from us. At first, I thought it was the size of a [Boeing] 737.

"Im certainly not saying that it was something of another world. All Im saying is that I have never seen anything like it before in all my years of flying."

The Civil Aviation Authority safety notice states that a Tri-Lander aircraft flying close to Alderney spotted the object.

"Certain parts of the report have not been published. I cannot say why," said a senior CAA source.

Antarctic Icebergs Are Hotspots for Marine Life

clipped by: wildcat
Clip Source: www.livescience.com

The ever-increasing number of free-floating icebergs breaking off Antarctica due to Earth?s warming temperatures are serving as ?hotspots? for life, with seabirds swooping above and complex webs of marine life teeming below, a new study shows.

Global warming is showing its most dramatic effect at Earth?s poles so far, and the rising temperatures are causing Antarctic ice shelves to shrink and split apart into thousands of icebergs that drift out to sea.

Researchers examined two of these icebergs drifting in the Weddell Sea, an arm of the Southern Atlantic Ocean that cuts into Antarctica southeast of South America?s Cape Horn.

They found that the floating icebergs transport material from the continent and release it further out at sea as they melt. This material produces a ?halo effect? of increased biological activity for a radius of more than two miles around the icebergs.

The findings are detailed in the June 22 issue of the journal Science.

Japan Adapts to Tuna Shortage: Waiter, There?s Deer in My Sushi

Chunks of raw tuna at Tsukiji, the famed fish market in Tokyo. The growing demand for sushi in countries like Russia and China and depleting tuna stocks are raising prices, and causing chefs to try other ingredients.

TOKYO, June 24 ? Sushi made with deer meat, anyone? How about a slice of raw horse on that rice?

These are some of the most extreme alternatives being considered by Japanese chefs as shortages of tuna threaten to remove it from Japan?s sushi menus ? something as unthinkable here as baseball without hot dogs or Texas without barbecue.

In this seafood-crazed country, tuna is king. From maguro to otoro, the Japanese seem to have almost as many words for tuna and its edible parts as the French have names for cheese. So when global fishing bodies recently began lowering the limits on catches in the world?s rapidly depleting tuna fisheries, Japan fell into a national panic.

"It must be changing something about the internal communication in my brain. "When Im on LSD and hearing something thats pure rhythm, it takes me to another world and into anther brain state where Ive stopped thinking and started knowing," said Herbert who intervened to ban drug testing of technologists at Cisco Systems.

Hey Dude, Wheres My Vacation?

Hey Dude, Wheres My Vacation?

Americans now work more every year, on average, than workers in any other industrialized country (except for a virtual tie with New Zealand). With women working longer hours each year, the average annual work time for a married couple is growing steadily, and family time -- including the crucial bonding experience of vacations -- has suffered. Full-time workers in much of Europe typically take seven to eight weeks of vacation and holidays each year -- thats double the American average for full-time workers.

Overall, the average private sector worker in the United States gets about nine paid vacation days and six paid holidays each year. Low-paid, part-time or small-business workers typically get far fewer, sometimes none. The same holds for paid sick leave: 72 percent of the highest-paid quarter of private sector workers get paid sick days compared to only 21 percent of workers in the lowest-paid quarter.

To Standardise Lesson Plans or Not?

clipped by: rhymonde
clippers remarks: In China for most of its" modern" history (that is after 1949) a national standardised lesson plans has always been the only way to go,but as of now a similar reformation is being carried out to make lesson plans more flexible and localised with less control directly from the centre department.
seems China and the U.S. are interestingly going in opposite directions,I just hope they find the balance and dont go too far.

Set lesson plans stir controversy

In the name of student achievement, more teachers must follow stricter rules about what ? and sometimes how ? they teach. In some places, they stay almost literally on the same page.

The goal is to provide students with the same academic experiences, regardless of their teacher or school.

But Bellevue Superintendent Mike Riley asserts that the lack of a consistent curriculum is "at the heart of whats wrong with education in America."

Not only should Bellevue have a common curriculum, he says, but there should be a national curriculum as well.

Concerns raised

"It would be a tragic error ... to tell teachers that on Day 80 of the school year, there is only one way to teach Huckleberry Finn, the circumference of a circle, or to play an instrument," he says. "My members are telling me this is not in the best interests of student learning."

DIY anti-satellite system

Satellite tracking software freely available on the Internet and some textbook physics could be used by any organization that can get hold of an intermediate range rocket to mount an unsophisticated attack on military or civilian satellites. Such an attack would require modest engineering capability and only a limited budget. That is according to researchers writing in Inderscience Publishers International Journal of Critical Infrastructures.

A terrorist organization or rogue state could threaten essential satellite systems, according to Adrian Gheorghe of Old Dominion University Norfolk, in Virginia, USA and Dan Vamanu of "Horia Hulubei" National Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering, in Bucharest, Romania. Military satellites, global positioning systems, weather satellites and even satellite TV systems could all become victims of such an attack.

HIV infection theory challenged

clipped by: Deepti
Clip Source: www.gulfnews.com

Scientists are challenging a longstanding theory of how HIV slowly depletes the bodys capacity to fight infection.

HIV attacks human immune cells, called T helper cells. Loss of these cells is gradual, often taking many years.

It was thought infected cells produced more HIV particles and this caused the body to activate more T cells, which in turn were infected and died.

But Imperial College London modelling suggests if that was true, cells would die out in months, not years.

The imperial team used a mathematical model of the processes by which T cells are produced and eliminated.

Try to stay in the middle of the pack.

find yourself a rabbit -- a solitary driver traveling the speed youd like to drive that you can follow discretely, about 50-100 yards back.

Do not change lanes frequently, tailgate or otherwise drive aggressively.

 Avoid the fast lane.

Use the far left lane to pass when necessary, but try to stay in the middle lanes when possible.

Watch for cut-outs and modulate your speed accordingly.

Dont speed when you are the only car on the road.

If its ok legally, get a radar detector.

If possible, drive a nondescript vehicle.

 Be aware that appearances count.

The worst possible thing you can do is combine all the no-nos listed above by driving a flashy car too fast, late at night when youre the only car on the road while looking like you just robbed a bank.

Huge Weight Gain Reported By Patients On Perscription Drugs

clipped by: debbyski

Thousands of people who take prescription medicines for everyday conditions are gaining large amounts of weight as an unexpected side effect, scientists have warned.

Researchers, who found that some patients were putting on up to 22lbs in a year, say that the drugs may even be contributing to the nations rocketing obesity epidemic.

All of the patients they studied, on medication for conditions as diverse as diabetes, epilepsy, depression, high blood pressure and schizophrenia, showed evidence of weight increase.

"Given the common and long-term use of many of these drugs," said the researchers, "it is likely that they play a significant contributory role in the increasing prevalence of obesity."

"Non-compliance is reported as an issue with many of the drugs included in this review, and the weight gain associated with them may contribute to this."

Rapid deforestation poses warming threat

Deforestation in Latin America and the Caribbean is accelerating, a new report shows, and the implications are growing more ominous every year.

Scientists say deforestation, almost always used to plant crops and graze cattle, accounts for about 20 percent of the carbon emissions that contribute to global warming. Environmentalists are pushing to allow countries and companies to offset their emissions by paying to preserve forests elsewhere, such as in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Group of Eight nations, meeting in Germany earlier this month, pledged to help poor countries reduce deforestation to provide ``a significant and cost-effective contribution toward mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.

The amount of forest lost each year from 2000 to 2005 averaged 11,077,734 acres, the study showed -- about the size of Maryland.

Engineers at College Park-based Vecna Technologies Inc. have developed the human-shaped robot, known as the BEAR, to carry wounded soldiers from dangerous battlefields with forklift-like arms.

The robot has the face of a teddy bear to comfort soldiers who might fear the otherwise ?grotesque-looking? machine, Theobald said.

?Let?s send an object out there that we don?t have to write home to its wife or family if it gets shot,? Theobald said. ?If the BEAR takes a few rounds or gets shot at, who cares? It?s just a piece of technology.?

Though the BEAR is pricy, Gilbert said, ?If one of these robots saves one soldier?s life, I?d consider the project well worth it, and I think the American people would, too.?

THE SUMMER DRIVING TRIP ? the pack the kids in the car and set out for the West or the East or possibly the Grand Canyon trip ? is once again in jeopardy.

Meanwhile, our state roads have begun to resemble interstates, leading us to malls ? each filled with the kind of places I used to see only way out near the highway. When my wife and I began driving cross-country together in 1989, we visited towns because they were different from ours: Oh, to eat huckleberries for breakfast in that old drugstore in Butte, Mont., again!

Now these towns feature roadside food stands writ large, as in really large, as in Costco giant-mayo-container large. Todays version of Lewis and Clarks trip ? Interstate 90 ? is used to get us to work and back. The ability to go on the cross-country trip has resulted in there being a lot less country to cross.

After all these years of seeing America, I feel as if I have to spend some time seeing whats left of what I call home.

Lightning kills man beneath cloudless sky

David Canales died after being struck by lightning.

With no rain or even clouds to warn him of the danger, death came literally out of the blue

Most lightning will come from the base of a thunderstorm, inside that rain-shaft area, Dixon explained. ``But occasionally, what we call a bolt from the blue comes out of a thunderstorm still several miles away.

The fair-weather bolts pack a bigger, deadlier punch and form differently.

Most lightning bolts carry a negative charge, but bolts from the blue have a positive charge, carry as much as 10 times the current, are hotter and last longer.

The bolts normally travel horizontally away from the storm and reach farther than typical lightning, then curve to the ground.

Dixon said protecting yourself from such unexpected lightning is difficult.

We urge people to stay indoors even if you hear thunder only faintly in the distance, Dixon said. ``If youre close enough to hear thunder, youre close enough to be struck by lightning.

While this letter does not represent what I view as mainstream religious thought it is not that removed from some of the rhetoric that we come into contact with all too often. I find the last paragraph of the clip to be particularly interesting. Such a stunning lack of knowledge is sad.

Welcoming Christian Exodus to state in name of freedom

A recent letter writer was concerned with the goals of Christian Exodus. The goal of Christian Exodus is, quite simply, to gain political power in a small, predominately Christian state, and use that political power to force the federal government to once again follow the letter of the law of the U.S. Constitution, something it has not done in a very, very long time.

While the power of one state may or may not change the national government, it can drastically improve the quality of life for that state?s inhabitants. We may actually have the opportunity to be truly free for the first time in a long time.

The entire principle of Christianity is the sinful nature of man, his own free will to choose, and the saving grace of his son. Of all the institutions ever created in all of history, nothing has had the positive influence of Christianity, including the right to choose your own path.

    Nearly and almost

These two items are almost synonymous, but not necessarily nearly synonymous. They may well be truth conditionally equivalent, "almost P" and "nearly P" both entailing "not P" (Atlas, Horn, but pace Sadock) and "close to P". Thus "Eric knows almost 500 languages" and "Eric knows nearly 500 languages" would both be false either if Eric knows 501 languages or if Eric knows no more than 400. But there is some kind of difference between them as revealed by the differential goodness of Almost no one was there and Nearly no one was there.

The difference would then have to be a difference in nuance, or connotation, or (more technically) conventional implicature.

Nearly n connotes that n exceeds (hence is better than) what was expected or hoped for, while almost n does not conventionally connote any particular desire, hope or expectation, but easily supports a conversational implicature to the same effect as the conventional implicature associated with nearly.

"The design has minimal special demands. It is low-tech and low-cost, and in fact can be even produced with local means," says Joseph Cory, a PhD candidate at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and an architect at Haifas Geotectura Studio.

Cory and Malka were inspired by the passive way dew gathers on leaves, spiders webs, even on sleeping bags and tents.

They designed a four-sided structure shaped like an inverted pyramid, with each panel about 3 metres tall.

At night, dew drops bead up on both the tops and undersides of the panels. Because the dew collecting on top may contain dust, dirt or insects, that water could be used for irrigation. But dew from the underside is drinkable.

This upturned pyramid is designed to extract at least 48 litres of fresh water from the air a day

Applicants must prove that the animal was killed lawfully before they will be able to get a licence.

The conservation regulations were designed to close a number of loopholes and bring Scotland into line with other EU members.

They also apply to other vulnerable animals like deer, wildcats, hedgehogs, bats, lynx, moles, seals, whales, dolphins and porpoises.

The regulations require anyone who owns any part of a protected animal to obtain a licence.

The maximum penalties for breaking the law are a fine of 5,000 and six months in prison.

China Drought Causes Water Shortages for Millions

BEIJING - Drought affecting large swathes of China has left more than 8 million people short of water, and many livestock have died of hunger, the official Xinhua news agency said.

The countrys northern regions, including Inner Mongolia and Liaoning and Jilin provinces, were among the worst affected areas, it said late on Friday, citing the flood prevention and drought control headquarters.

In Liaoning in the northeast, a leading corn-producing area, Xinhua said that close to 90 reservoirs had dried up and 25,000 wells could no longer supply adequate water supplies.

State media reported last week that Liaoning was suffering its worst drought in 30 years as a result of high temperatures and little rain and that some 1.4 million hectares of crops had been damaged.

Thats because experts say the stage is set for water-related goods and services to experience strong demand in coming years. In the United States, aging systems for delivering drinking water will require $250 billion to maintain and upgrade over the next 30 years, according to the American Water Works Association, a water utility association in Denver. Worldwide, more than 1.1 billion people lack safe drinking water, according to the United Nations, and needs are sure to increase with a global population on course to reach 8 billion by 2025.

The deficiencies are real, they will never be filled."2 This supposed column is actually saturated with "polystrate fossils" (fossils extending from one geologic layer to another) that tie all the layers to one time-frame. I thought the best tomatoes smelled like tomatoes. The smell of food is a message to the brain, that can signify its nutritional content according to its ingredients. Fooling sense of smell for the sake of shelf life, and cost saving, makes it seem like the customers health is low on the priority list. Since, tomatoes are the fruit of a flowering plant, they dont need lemons to make them smell like fruit, or flowers.
    Clip Source: www.abc.net.au
Israeli researchers say they have genetically engineered tomatoes to give hints of lemon and rose aromas.

The transgenic tomato includes a gene from a variety of lemon basil, Ocimum basilicum, that produces an aroma-making enzyme called geraniol synthase.

Dr Efraim Lewinsohn of Newe Yaar Research Center and colleagues report their research online in the journal Nature Biotechnology.

A panel of 82 people tested the experimental genetically modified (GM) fruit against unmodified counterparts.

When put to the taste, 49 members of the panel preferred the GM tomatoes, 29 preferred unmodified tomatoes and four expressed no preference

But there may be a potential drawback

GM tomatoes have only a light red colour as they have only half as much lycopene as conventional tomatoes

In addition to conferring a bright blush to tomatoes, lycopene is an antioxidant, a compound credited with health-giving qualities

Offsetting the low levels of lycopene are higher levels of compounds called volatile terpenoids

"The worlds a bit of a tough place for a naive bee," says Dr Adrian Dyer, a research in how animals perceive colour from La Trobe University in Australia. "They have to go out and find the goodies."

Any bee that innately prefers the colour of flowers with the highest amounts of nectar will probably have a better chance of surviving its first few days in the world and then pass on that trait to its own offspring.

Dr Nigel Raine and Professor Lars Chittka at Queen Mary, University of London found that there is a clear advantage to bees that start out life primed for purple.

"The purple flowers in that area near Wrzburg are more rewarding,"

Cheney brought a four-page text, written in strict secrecy by his lawyer. He carried it back out with him after lunch.

Cheneys proposal had become a military order from the commander in chief. Foreign terrorism suspects held by the United States were stripped of access to any court -- civilian or military, domestic or foreign. They could be confined indefinitely without charges and would be tried, if at all, in closed "military commissions."

The conclusions are based on interviews with many teenage users of the social networking sites by PhD student Danah Boyd from the School of Information Sciences at UC Berkeley.

This division is just another way in which technology is mirroring societal values
    Danah Boyd
Characterising Facebook users she said: "They are in honors classes, looking forward to the prom, and live in a world dictated by after school activities."

By contrast, the average MySpace teenager tendeds to come from families where parents did not go to college, she said.

"MySpace has most of the kids who are socially ostracised at school because they are geeks, freaks, or queers," she said.

Teenage users of both sites have very strong opinions about the social network they do not use, she noted.

Taking the herbal remedy echinacea can more than halve the risk of catching a common cold, US researchers say.

They found it decreased the odds of developing a cold by 58% and the duration of colds by a day-and-a-half.

The results in The Lancet Infectious Diseases conflict with other studies that show no beneficial effect.

Researchers, led by Dr Craig Coleman from the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy, combined the results of 14 different studies on Echinaceas anti-cold properties.

In one of the 14 studies the researchers reviewed, echinacea was taken alongside vitamin C. This combination reduced cold incidence by 86%.

When echinacea was used alone it reduced cold incidence by 65%.

The researchers report said: "With over 200 viruses capable of causing the common cold, echinacea could have modest effect against rhinovirus but marked effects against other viruses."

They found that more than 800 products containing echinacea were available

It is like an organic search engine, powered by imagination, curiosity, and the need for awareness, rather than an algorithm. It is amazing how interesting someone can become, when we find they agree with us. Other clips can make clear some of the things, (facts particularly). that we have believed in error. With clear references.
Then there are hundreds of clips that can give your mind a break or a laugh. If you are going to see the world the more angles the better.

    CN Towers new look

A new lighting system offers infinite variety of night looks. Stated intention: elegance. And the bonus of a lower energy bill

The specs sound like theyre from the latest ad for LCD televisions: 16.7 million colours, Chromacore technology, digital control.

Over the past week, the CN Tower has been testing its new $2.5 million lighting system after dusk. Ribbons of colour have spilled down the 553-metre-tall structure, ebbing and flowing like water.

Because the computer-controlled system is so flexible, virtually any look is possible. So, depending on when one happens to glance up, the tower can appear as refined as a clean sculpture ? or as garish as a midway.

The CN Tower news release stresses that the system is efficient ? using 10 per cent less energy than the most recent setup, and consuming about 60 per cent less power than was needed to fully light the tower in the 1990s. In other words, David Suzuki wont be knocking on the porch to change the light bulbs.

EAST LANSING, Mich., June 25 (UPI) -- Two U.S. professors are leading an international effort to find ways of purifying the worlds waters using membrane-based technologies.

"Membrane-based technologies selectively remove things such as chemicals and particles from water," said Voice, a professor of civil and environmental engineering. "They are analogous to filters, except they remove things that are smaller and separate on the basis of chemistry and size. Our project is looking at developing new types of membranes and membrane systems that perform better in water treatment applications."

Membranes can produce ultra-pure water, removing nearly all impurities.

"They are used in some places to turn sea water into fresh water," Voice said. "The challenge is to do this cost effectively, and we seek to do this by improving their performance."

A six-month research project has revealed a sharp division along class lines among the American teenagers flocking to the social network sites.

The research suggests those using Facebook come from wealthier homes and are more likely to attend college.

By contrast, MySpace users tend to get a job after finishing high school rather than continue their education.

In a preliminary draft of the research, Ms Boyd said defining "class" in the US was difficult because, unlike many other nations, it did not map directly to income.

Instead, she said, class in the US was more about social life and networks - how people define themselves and who they define themselves with.

Broadly, Ms Boyd found Facebook users tend to be white and come from families who are keen for children to get the most out of school and go on to college.

By contrast, the average MySpace teenager tendeds to come from families where parents did not go to college, she said.

We never gave them a chance. They were democratically elected in an election that was widely recognized as free and fair, even by former President Jimmy Carter. And then the U.S., along with Israel, Jordan and Egypt trained these gangs and actually put them in Gaza to overthrow the Hamas government. And, of course, its actually backfired and Fatah was overthrown. But all youre going to do is isolate and further radicalize Hamas. And so when you say that the U.S. is seeking to ease tensions in the Middle East, I disagree with you. These are tensions that the U.S. actually created in the Middle East.

Some observers have likened the disc to a winking face

Archaeologists have revived the debate over whether a spectacular Bronze Age disc from Germany is one of the earliest known calendars.

The Nebra disc is emblazoned with symbols of the Sun, Moon and stars and said by some to be 3,600 years old.

Writing in the journal Antiquity, a team casts doubt on the idea the disc was used by ancient astronomers as a precision tool for observing the sky.

They instead argue that the disc was used for shamanistic rituals.

But other archaeologists who have studied the Himmelsscheibe von Nebra (Nebra sky disc) point to features which, they say, helped Bronze Age people to track four key dates during the year.

The Nebra disc is considered one of the most sensational - and controversial - discoveries in archaeology in the past 10 years.

Today, with an orthodox Christian political party in the government for the first time, and with immigration anxieties fueling a national search for identity, the country that has been the worlds most socially liberal political laboratory is rethinking its anything-goes policies.

The effort to rein in the Netherlands famed social liberties is not limited to the small, newly empowered Christian Union party, which holds two of the 16 ministries in the coalition government formed this year. Increasingly, politicians from the more center-left Labor Party are among the most outspoken proponents of closing some brothels and marijuana shops, known here as "coffee shops."

Rise of man theory ?out by 400,000 years?

    clipped by: invictus
clippers remarks: A very controversial, unorthodox and exciting new theory on the history of humanity. Professor Helmut Ziegert from Germany, a very experienced and bright archaeologist, comes up with new findings that could shake all we know about the distant past of homo sapiens and the starting point of the Neolitic Age, which was the beginning of our civilization.

Sean Kingsley, an archaeologist and the managing editor of Minerva, said: ?This research is nothing less than a quantum leap in our understanding of Man?s intellectual and social history. For archaeology it?s as radical as finding life on Mars.

?As a veteran of over 81 archaeological surveys and excavations . . . Ziegert is nothing if not scientifically cautious, which makes the current revelation all the more exciting.?

Rise of man theory ?out by 400,000 years?

    undefined

Our earliest ancestors gave up hunter-gathering and took to a settled life up to 400,000 years earlier than previously thought, according to controversial research.

The accepted timescale of Man?s evolution is being challenged by a German archaeologist who claims to have found evidence that Homo erectus ? mankind?s early ancestor, who migrated from Africa to Asia and Europe ? began living in settled communities long before the accepted time of 10,000 years ago.

The point at which settlement actually took place is the first critical stage in humanity?s cultural development.

Helmut Ziegert, of the Institute of Archaeology at Hamburg University, says that the evidence can be found at excavated sites in North and East Africa, in the remains of stone huts and tools created by upright man for fishing and butchery.

clippers remarks: "As Bender in Futurama (kindof) said: Creationism:0 , regular theories: a billion!"
image of stars with magnetic fields embedded in disks

Creationists who bang the pulpit about the Universe being young tend to use old, outdated, and long-debunked arguments.

One argument has to do with angular momentum. This is a tendency for a rotating object to stay spinning unless acted upon by a force of some kind

Since angular momentum depends on mass, you?d expect, upon doing the math, that the Sun would have most of the angmom (as we scientist-types call it when we?re lazy) in the solar system, since it has something like 98% of the total mass. But that?s not the case: Jupiter has more!

The creationists would say, "Aha! It?s because the solar system did not form that way, astronomers are stellar evilutionists, and are lying to you!"

It?s been theorized for a long time that when a star is born, it spins rapidly, and has strong magnetic fields. These fields spin through the disk of material around the star, and accelerate the disk. At the same time, it slows the star?s spin

This was theoretical? until now. It?s been observed.

LONDON, June 24 (UPI) -- Chimpanzees possess the ability for interspecific altruism, researchers in Germany have found.

Altruism -- helping another with no expectation of personal reward -- was once thought to be a uniquely human trait, The Times of London reported. However, in recent experiments, chimpanzees repeatedly helped humans who appeared to be struggling to reach a stick within the animals enclosure.

The chimps, which were interacting with humans who had not given them food, spontaneously helped the humans by reaching across and helping them get the stick.

Anthropologists cite altruism as a key to developing civilized and complex societies. Although altruism has been observed in many species, this recent experiment is special because it shows ability for one species to be altruistic with another species, the Times said.

WASHINGTON ? The number of blacks joining the military has plunged by more than one-third since the Afghanistan and Iraq wars began. Other job prospects are soaring and relatives of potential recruits increasingly are discouraging them from joining the armed services.

According to data obtained by The Associated Press, the decline covers all four military services for active duty recruits. The drop is even more dramatic when National Guard and Reserve recruiting is included.

The findings reflect the growing unpopularity of the wars, particularly among family members and other adults who exert influence over high school and college students considering the military as a place to serve their country, further their education or build a career.

Marine Commandant Gen. James T. Conway agreed that the bloodshed in Iraq _ where more than 3,540 U.S. troops have died _ is the biggest deterrent for prospective recruits.

The charity Kidscape accused Judge Julian Hall of "trying to find excuses" and said a child must never be blamed.

Judge Hall had said that the sentencing had been the most difficult decision he had ever made, but the girl had appeared to be 16.

She was attacked by Fenn and an accomplice in a park in Henley-on-Thames on 14 October last year.

The judge said in sentencing he faced a moral dilemma as the fact they had sex within 45 minutes of meeting was an absolute crime.

To the psychopathic minds of such killers, wives and children "are less than people. Theyre something to get rid of," Philpin said.

It takes an extreme psychopath to kill his own children. But such killers dont really love their kids. They just play the role of the loving father.

"As long as the child is useful, you parade them around," Brown said. "When theyre in the way, you kill them."

Often, family killers dont have criminal records. "But they have a record of psychopathic behavior," Brown said.

They are manipulators. Theyre narcissistic, filled with grandiose thoughts. And theyre pathologic liars who blame everyone but themselves for their problems.

But theyre usually not insane, said Dr. Louis Kraus, a forensic psychiatrist at Rush University Medical Center. Unlike insane killers, they know right from wrong.

Central Asia: Young Women trade Studen Life for Married Life

    clipped by: arifsali
    Clip Source: www.rferl.org
June 25, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Formal education for many girls in Central Asia ends with secondary school. A shortage of good jobs and career opportunities discourages many families in these post-Soviet republics from investing in university-level education for their daughters.

This week, hundreds of thousands of young people will graduate from secondary schools across Central Asia. A flurry of activity frequently accompanies the end of the school year, as girls in their late teens make the choice between continuing school or starting a family. Not all of them are rushing off to prepare for university or trade schools in the fall.

The destinies of some young girls are sealed -- they are getting married as soon as secondary school is finished.

A majority of the regions marriages are arranged by parents. Dating is uncommon in the villages of Central Asia; the idea of unmarried couples living together is virtually unheard of.

Giant Penguins May Have Roamed Peru

This undated handout photo provided by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) shows two fossils recently discovered in Peru reveal that early penguins responded differently to natural climate change than scientists would have predicted. The smaller of the two, Perudyptes devriesi, was comparable in size to the living king penguin. The larger, Icadyptes salasi, would have been fearsome to encounter at over five feet tall, with a seven-inch beak, and is one of the largest pengu

One of them was a 5-foot giant with a long sharp beak.

The beak of the large penguin - Icadyptes salasi - "looks remarkably spearlike," she said. But the researchers dont know its exact feeding style.

Eating plenty of whole grains can help keep your arteries healthy, potentially warding off heart disease and stroke, a new study shows.

In a diverse group of men and women participating in the Insulin Resistance Atherosclerosis Study, those with diets containing the largest amounts of whole grains had the thinnest carotid artery walls and showed the slowest progression in artery wall thickness over a five-year period

how much dark bread, cooked cereal and high-fiber cereal they ate

The higher a persons whole grain intake, the thinner his or her intimal medial thickness, the researchers found, and the less intimal medial thickness progressed during the course of the study.

making it fairly clear that it was the whole grains themselves -- not some individual component -- that were responsible for their atherosclerosis-preventing effects.

Acerbating the crisis are the policy initiatives that promotes privatization of natural resources, take over of farm land, integrating Indian agriculture with the global economy, and moving farmers out of agriculture ? in essence the hallmark of the neo-liberal economic growth model.

It has been estimated that the crops that are contracted by the private companies require on an average 20 times more chemical inputs and water than the staple foods.

The World Bank had therefore estimated that some 400 million people would be willingly or unwillingly moving from the rural to urban centres by 2015.

These 400 million displaced will constitute the new class of migrants ? agricultural refugees.

Coupled with the introduction of the genetically modified crops, and the unlimited credit support for the agribusiness companies, the focus is to strengthen the ability of the companies to take over the food chain.

    Released crocs turn protectors

    clipped by: arifsali

CALCUTTA, India ? Dozens of crocodiles bred in captivity in eastern India have been enlisted to protect their endangered counterparts in the wild and are being released in forests to scare away poachers, authorities said on Monday.

Illegal fishing in mangrove forests and habitat destruction in the states of Orissa and West Bengal had led to a steep fall in crocodile numbers, from several thousand a century ago to less than 100 in the early 1970s, they said.

But the same reptiles were breeding rapidly in captivity. Orissas Bhitarkanika sanctuary has more than 1,400 crocodiles now.

"The swelling number of released crocodiles in the wild is working as a deterrent and keeping people away from the mangrove as villagers are more cautious before venturing into the forests," said Rathin Banerjee, a senior wildlife official.

Wildlife sanctuaries in the region are threatened by poachers and villagers foraging for wood and forest produce.

    How to detect Two-way mirrors

When we visit toilets, bathrooms, hotel rooms, changing rooms, etc. How many of you know for sure that the seemingly ordinary mirror hanging on the wall is a real mirror, or actually a 2-way mirror i.e., they can see you, but you cant see them. There have been many cases of people installing 2-way mirrors in female changing rooms or bathroom or bedrooms.

It is very difficult to positively identify the surface by just looking at it. So, how do we determine with any amount of certainty what type of mirror we are looking at?

    CONDUCT THIS SIMPLE TEST:
Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective surface and if there is a GAP between your fingernail and the image of the nail, then it is a GENUINE mirror.

However, if your fingernail DIRECTLY TOUCHES the image of your nail, then BEWARE, IT IS A 2-WAY MIRROR! (There is someone seeing you from the other side). So remember, every time you see a mirror, do the "fingernail test." It doesnt cost you anything.

    Breast Cancer from Dads side

    clipped by: tron2007
A new study suggests thousands of young women with breast cancer an estimated 8,000 a year in the U.S. are not offered testing to identify faulty genes and clarify their medical decisions.

Guidelines used by insurance companies to decide coverage for genetic testing should change to reflect the findings, said study co-author Dr. Jeffrey Weitzel of City of Hope Cancer Center in Duarte, California. Testing can cost more than $3,000 (2,238).

Interestingly, its about Dad, Weitzel said. Half of genetic breast cancers are inherited from a womans father, not her mother.

But unless Dad has female relatives with breast cancer, the faulty gene may have been passed down silently, without causing cancer. (Men can get genetic breast cancer, too, but it is not common.)
Weitzel said doctors often overlook the genetic risk from the fathers side of the family.

The class divide between Facebook and Myspace

MySpace is about teenage rebellion; ugliness and defiantly folded arms. Facebook is much more popular among those of college age and older - its more grown up, and looking at it isnt like pouring acid into your eyeballs.

So its timely that Danah Boyd, one of the most incisive researchers looking at societies on the web, has come up with a paper on the class structures of Facebook and MySpace. In essence, she says good middle class kids use Facebook, while the working classes use MySpace. In many respects it is one of those things that puts what you already know into context, but its a worthwhile read.

You cant move for people talking about Facebook at the moment.

But aside from all of the boggle-eyed social butterflies who spend hours each day updating their profile and the hand-rubbing money men (including those who enjoy stating the obvious) the real interest for me lies in who uses it, and why.

"Absolutism (Bush-style "youre either with us or youre with the terrorists" framing) is being used to bully Canada into committing to keep our troops in the midst of the anarchy and civil war in Afghanistan. The PR from the military is increasingly using the term enemy to describe anyone in Afghanistan who opposes the continued presence of foreign troops in their country. The ideologically rabid Harper Conservative minority government routinely uses the "if you dont support our war, you dont support our troops" line to disparage anti-war groups. And today a military spokesman lambasted the Canadian media for daring to publicize opinion polls showing Canadians strong opposition to the war, saying it was "demoralizing our troops".

    Clip Source: blogs.salon.com
Canadians, for the most part, love peace and nature, and we are progressive in our thinking. Unfortunately, we are also complacent, naive, and poorly informed. This has allowed a small but determined conservative minority to steal the vast majority of our countrys resources and sell them, cheap and raw, to foreign corporations who often use them to manufacture goods they then sell back to us at a huge markup.

It has also allowed warmongers with a right-wing ideological agenda to commit our defence forces to a partisan role in the Middle East, not the peacekeeping role we were duped into believing we were committing to.

In the last few days, two important events have set the stage for a war of wills between a passive progressive majority and an aggressive conservative minority:

Classical neocon tactics are being used to spin both events:

The pollen sampling technique comes as a surprise to at least one spider expert, who had only heard of one other pollen-spider connection.

"For spiders that routinely take down their webs, consuming the silk in the process, it has long been assumed that pollen sticking to the silk is a nutrient source,"

    Happy Birthday George Orwell

    clipped by: jillsodt

Its the birthday of the novelist and essayist George Orwell, (books by this author) born Eric Arthur Blair in Bengal, India (1903). He came from a middle class family, but managed to win a scholarship to a distinguished boarding school, where most of his classmates were upper class kids. He did not fit in at all. He said, "In a world where the prime necessities were money, titled relatives, athleticism, tailor-made clothes, neatly brushed hair, a charming smile, I was no good."

    The unfortunate death of language

    clipped by: jillsodt
clippers remarks: I love language and learning new words. While I understand and support the general idea to speak plainly in common situation, I also hope that we do not eventually lose the ability for language to be extremely descriptive and expressive.

Vocabulary: Are we losing our lexicon?

The last days of long words! The sunset of syntactical surplusage!

You dont need a vocabulary to see the point: A home, a city or a society where people appreciate and share their vocabularies, where they take public pleasure in using language, is a place with a future where the lights are on.

"My advice to people is to get pleasure out of explaining things clearly. You have to give up things you love. But then you can have a really great connection with people."

"I dont think there is any goal in having a vocabulary," Thomas Delworth says from his perch toward the end of his rich spoken and written life. "I think it is its own reward. I cant give you a cost-effectiveness breakdown. You simply have a somewhat larger grasp of this vast empire you might command."

The alternative is that we use fewer and fewer of them, until the world is small enough that one word alone will suffice: Duh.

Giant Penguins Once Roamed Peru Desert, Fossils Show

Penguins about the size of humans roamed South America some 35 million years ago, and they didnt need ice to survive.

Thats the result of a new study by North Carolina State University paleontologist Julia Clarke and her colleagues. (See a picture gallery of the giant penguin finds.)

The study, which appears in this weeks issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, unveils two new species of giant penguins from fossils unearthed in Perus Atacama Desert.

Todays penguins are cold-adapted and therefore at grave risk from global warming, she said, but the new fossils suggest that hasnt always been true.

The new study describes two new species of penguins from fossils, including the first complete skull from an ancient giant penguin.

That species, which the authors say lived in Peru about 36 million years ago, is the third largest penguin known and stood about 4.5 feet (1.5 meters) tall.

Natural resources and peacebuilding in Africa

In the latest ECSP publication, Report From Africa, eight African leaders and scholars describe their continent?s struggle with conflict over resources and the possibilities for peace that population and environment initiatives may hold. They claim a commitment to sustainability could help turn deadly environments into safe, sustainable neighborhoods.

Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai says that poor governance and mismanagement of resources spur the violence that plagues many countries in Africa. ?Below the thin layer of racial and ethnic chauvinism, religion, and politics, the real reason for many conflicts is the struggle for the access to and control of the limited resources on our planet.?

The devastating civil conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) was fueled by global demand for the country?s enormous stores of valuable minerals and extensive forests.

Breaking News: Jessie Davis-Cutts and Ferrell appear in court today

    clipped by: flagranny

Bobby Cutts and Myisha Ferrell appeared in court today at 3pm

As I watched the hearing of Cutts and Ferrell and this is what came out of this hearing:

The sister and mother were in the court room on front from about 15 feet from Bobby Cutts as he appeared for his arraignment. Preliminary hearing set for July 2nd at 1:00p.m. with Cutts bond set at $5million. At the preliminary hearing it will then be determined if they have enough evidence to back up charges to hold Cutts and if so does it warrants the $5million bond.

Myisha Ferrell?s preliminary hearing was also set for July 2nd at 2:00pm and her bond was set at $500 thousand. Her attorney asked that Ferrell not be approached by any law enforcement without an attorney present.

At this point the charges are at the State level and not Federal. They still continue to say the case is still under investigation.

Co-founder Annie Laurie Gaylor has helped transform the Freedom From Religion Foundation into the nations largest group of atheists and agnostics, with a fast-rising membership and increasing legal clout.

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court ruled Monday that ordinary taxpayers cannot challenge a White House initiative that helps religious charities get a share of federal money.

The 5-4 decision blocks a lawsuit by a group of atheists and agnostics against eight Bush administration officials including the head of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.

The taxpayers group, the Freedom From Religion Foundation Inc., objected to government conferences in which administration officials encourage religious charities to apply for federal grants.

If you poured all the world?s water on the United States and could contain it, you?d create a lake 90 miles deep.

How much water is that? Roughly 326 million cubic miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Some 72 percent of Earth is covered in water, but 97 percent of that is salty and no good for drinking. So, some facts about the freshwater:

  • 70 percent of freshwater is locked in ice caps

  • Less than 1 percent of the world?s freshwater is readily accessible

  • 6 countries (Brazil, Russia, Canada, Indonesia, China and Colombia) have 50 percent of the freshwater reserves

  • One-third of the world?s population lives in ?water-stressed? countries

  • There is much more freshwater stored in the ground than there is in liquid form on the surface, according to the USGS.

Mexican Public Safety Secretary Genaro Garcia Luna said on Monday in Mexico City that 284 high-ranking officers would be forced to undergo a "trust test."

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) -- Mexico temporarily removed all 284 of its top federal police officers from their jobs and is forcing them to prove they will not be corrupted in the fight against drug trafficking, the government announced Monday.

Mexican authorities often have purged police forces in attempts to eliminate corruption, only to see the fired officers go to work full time for organized crime. This is one of the most extreme measures taken yet in hopes of guaranteeing the honesty of high-ranking officers.

t comes as Mexico seeks more U.S. aid in its crackdown on drug gangs. Washington has long complained about endemic corruption hindering anti-smuggling efforts in Mexico.

    Researchers may remake Neanderthal DNA

    Clip Source: news.yahoo.com

WASHINGTON - Researchers studying Neanderthal DNA say it should be possible to construct a complete genome of the ancient hominid despite the degradation of the DNA over time.

There is also hope for reconstructing the genome of the mammoth and cave bear, according to a research team led by Svante Paabo of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany.

Debate has raged for years about whether there is any relationship between Neanderthals and modern humans. Some researchers believe that Neanderthals were simply replaced by early modern humans, while others argue the two groups may have interbred.

Sequencing the genome of Neanderthals, who lived in Europe until about 30,000 years ago, could shed some light on that question.

In studies of Neanderthals, cave bear and mammoth, a majority of the DNA recovered was that of microorganisms that colonized the tissues after death, the researchers said.

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- A dangerous, drug-resistant staph germ may be infecting as many as 5 percent of hospital and nursing home patients, according to a comprehensive study.

    story.surgical.gi.jpg

The potentially fatal superbug MRSA, which is spread by touch, typically thrives in health care settings where people have open wounds.

At least 30,000 U.S. hospital patients may have the superbug at any given time, according to a survey released Monday by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.

The estimate is about 10 times the rate that some health officials had previously estimated.

"This is a welcome piece of information that emphasizes that this is a huge problem in health care facilities, and more needs to done to prevent it," said Dr. John Jernigan, an epidemiologist with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A judge ruled Monday that no pair of pants is worth $54 million, rejecting a lawsuit that took a dry cleaners promise of "Satisfaction Guaranteed" to its most litigious extreme.

Roy L. Pearson became a worldwide symbol of legal abuse by seeking jackpot justice from a simple complaint -- that a neighborhood dry cleaners lost the pants from a new suit and tried to give him a pair that were not his.

District of Columbia Superior Court Judge Judith Bartnoff ruled that the owners of Custom Cleaners did not violate the consumer protection law by failing to live up to Pearsons expectations of the "Satisfaction Guaranteed" sign once displayed in the store window

"A reasonable consumer would not interpret Satisfaction Guaranteed to mean that a merchant is required to satisfy a customers unreasonable demands," the judge wrote.

Bartnoff wrote that Pearson, an administrative law

judge, also failed to prove that the pants the dry cleaner tried to return were not the pants he took in
