Finger Length A Predictator of ?
clipped by: norasu79
clippers remarks: This is interesting. Makes you want to go around looking at peoples hands! : )

Your finger length can predict how you will do on various tests in school. They can also tell if you are likely to be homosexual or straight, if you will likely get certain cancers, be a musician, writer or a scientist, or if you will have an aggresssive or passive personality. The two fingers that are important are the index finger -- the one you use to point to something -- and the ring finger.
Scientists believe that the link is caused by different levels of the hormones testosterone and estrogen in the womb -- and the effect they have on both brain development and finger length. This is nothing new, since scientists have known for many years that elevated levels of testosterone -- or other hormones closely resembling testosterone -- can cause the brains of both males and females to be more "masculine."

Antarctic Icebergs Are Hotspots for Marine Life
clipped by: wildcat
The ever-increasing number of free-floating icebergs breaking off Antarctica due to Earth?s warming temperatures are serving as ?hotspots? for life, with seabirds swooping above and complex webs of marine life teeming below, a new study shows.

Global warming is showing its most dramatic effect at Earth?s poles so far, and the rising temperatures are causing Antarctic ice shelves to shrink and split apart into thousands of icebergs that drift out to sea.
Researchers examined two of these icebergs drifting in the Weddell Sea, an arm of the Southern Atlantic Ocean that cuts into Antarctica southeast of South America?s Cape Horn.
They found that the floating icebergs transport material from the continent and release it further out at sea as they melt. This material produces a ?halo effect? of increased biological activity for a radius of more than two miles around the icebergs.
The findings are detailed in the June 22 issue of the journal Science.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight

NEW YORK (AP) - Hank Medress, whose vocals with the doo wop group the Tokens helped propel their irrepressible single "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" to the top of the charts and who produced hits with other groups, has died of lung cancer. He was 68.
Medress died Monday at his Manhattan home, relatives said.
He was a teenager at Brooklyns Lincoln High School when he launched his vocal quartet in 1955 with Neil Sedaka, performing as the Linc-Tones. When Sedaka departed for a successful solo career, lead singer Jay Siegel joined brothers Mitch and Phil Margo and Medress to become the Tokens.

Hey Dude, Wheres My Vacation?

Hey Dude, Wheres My Vacation?
Americans now work more every year, on average, than workers in any other industrialized country (except for a virtual tie with New Zealand). With women working longer hours each year, the average annual work time for a married couple is growing steadily, and family time -- including the crucial bonding experience of vacations -- has suffered. Full-time workers in much of Europe typically take seven to eight weeks of vacation and holidays each year -- thats double the American average for full-time workers.
Overall, the average private sector worker in the United States gets about nine paid vacation days and six paid holidays each year. Low-paid, part-time or small-business workers typically get far fewer, sometimes none. The same holds for paid sick leave: 72 percent of the highest-paid quarter of private sector workers get paid sick days compared to only 21 percent of workers in the lowest-paid quarter.

To Standardise Lesson Plans or Not?
clipped by: rhymonde
clippers remarks: In China for most of its" modern" history (that is after 1949) a national standardised lesson plans has always been the only way to go,but as of now a similar reformation is being carried out to make lesson plans more flexible and localised with less control directly from the centre department.
seems China and the U.S. are interestingly going in opposite directions,I just hope they find the balance and dont go too far.
Set lesson plans stir controversy
In the name of student achievement, more teachers must follow stricter rules about what ? and sometimes how ? they teach. In some places, they stay almost literally on the same page.
The goal is to provide students with the same academic experiences, regardless of their teacher or school.
But Bellevue Superintendent Mike Riley asserts that the lack of a consistent curriculum is "at the heart of whats wrong with education in America."
Not only should Bellevue have a common curriculum, he says, but there should be a national curriculum as well.
Concerns raised
"It would be a tragic error ... to tell teachers that on Day 80 of the school year, there is only one way to teach Huckleberry Finn, the circumference of a circle, or to play an instrument," he says. "My members are telling me this is not in the best interests of student learning."

Satellite tracking software freely available on the Internet and some textbook physics could be used by any organization that can get hold of an intermediate range rocket to mount an unsophisticated attack on military or civilian satellites. Such an attack would require modest engineering capability and only a limited budget. That is according to researchers writing in Inderscience Publishers International Journal of Critical Infrastructures.
A terrorist organization or rogue state could threaten essential satellite systems, according to Adrian Gheorghe of Old Dominion University Norfolk, in Virginia, USA and Dan Vamanu of "Horia Hulubei" National Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering, in Bucharest, Romania. Military satellites, global positioning systems, weather satellites and even satellite TV systems could all become victims of such an attack.

HIV infection theory challenged
clipped by: Deepti
Scientists are challenging a longstanding theory of how HIV slowly depletes the bodys capacity to fight infection.
HIV attacks human immune cells, called T helper cells. Loss of these cells is gradual, often taking many years.
It was thought infected cells produced more HIV particles and this caused the body to activate more T cells, which in turn were infected and died.
But Imperial College London modelling suggests if that was true, cells would die out in months, not years.
The imperial team used a mathematical model of the processes by which T cells are produced and eliminated.

Dont expect the site to replace your desktop at this point: Goowy lacks full-blown applications and doesnt access your hard drive. Still, its a glimpse into what may be the future of the Internet.

Huge Weight Gain Reported By Patients On Perscription Drugs
clipped by: debbyski
Thousands of people who take prescription medicines for everyday conditions are gaining large amounts of weight as an unexpected side effect, scientists have warned.
Researchers, who found that some patients were putting on up to 22lbs in a year, say that the drugs may even be contributing to the nations rocketing obesity epidemic.
All of the patients they studied, on medication for conditions as diverse as diabetes, epilepsy, depression, high blood pressure and schizophrenia, showed evidence of weight increase.
"Given the common and long-term use of many of these drugs," said the researchers, "it is likely that they play a significant contributory role in the increasing prevalence of obesity."
"Non-compliance is reported as an issue with many of the drugs included in this review, and the weight gain associated with them may contribute to this."

Robots With Teddy Bear Faces
clipped by: debbyski
BALTIMORE ? With small, perky ears and big, round eyes, the Battlefield Extraction Assist Robot may look like your average teddy bear, but standing 6-feet tall and weighing 380 pounds, this bear isn?t built to be cuddled.
Engineers at College Park-based Vecna Technologies Inc. have developed the human-shaped robot, known as the BEAR, to carry wounded soldiers from dangerous battlefields with forklift-like arms.
The robot has the face of a teddy bear to comfort soldiers who might fear the otherwise ?grotesque-looking? machine, Theobald said.
?Let?s send an object out there that we don?t have to write home to its wife or family if it gets shot,? Theobald said. ?If the BEAR takes a few rounds or gets shot at, who cares? It?s just a piece of technology.?
Though the BEAR is pricy, Gilbert said, ?If one of these robots saves one soldier?s life, I?d consider the project well worth it, and I think the American people would, too.?

The fair-weather bolts pack a bigger, deadlier punch and form differently.
Most lightning bolts carry a negative charge, but bolts from the blue have a positive charge, carry as much as 10 times the current, are hotter and last longer.
Dixon said protecting yourself from such unexpected lightning is difficult.

I clipped the letter because it was extreme and because many of the underlying points he makes are simply exaggerations of mainstream arguments I see every day. While this letter does not represent what I view as mainstream religious thought it is not that removed from some of the rhetoric that we come into contact with all too often. I find the last paragraph of the clip to be particularly interesting. Such a stunning lack of knowledge is sad.
Welcoming Christian Exodus to state in name of freedom
A recent letter writer was concerned with the goals of Christian Exodus. The goal of Christian Exodus is, quite simply, to gain political power in a small, predominately Christian state, and use that political power to force the federal government to once again follow the letter of the law of the U.S. Constitution, something it has not done in a very, very long time.
While the power of one state may or may not change the national government, it can drastically improve the quality of life for that state?s inhabitants. We may actually have the opportunity to be truly free for the first time in a long time.

1. The Fossil Record...Evolutionists have constructed the Geologic Column in order to illustrate the supposed progression of "primitive" life forms to "more complex" systems we observe today. Yet, "since only a small percentage of the earths surface obeys even a portion of the geologic column the claim of their having taken place to form a continuum of rock/life/time over the earth is therefore a fantastic and imaginative contrivance.1" "[T]he lack of transitional series cannot be explained as being due to the scarcity of material. The deficiencies are real, they will never be filled."2 This supposed column is actually saturated with "polystrate fossils" (fossils extending from one geologic layer to another) that tie all the layers to one time-frame. "[T]o the unprejudiced, the fossil record of plants is in favor of special creation." 3

Just past the Oval Office, in the private dining room overlooking the South Lawn, Vice President Cheney joined President Bush at a round parquet table they shared once a week. Cheney brought a four-page text, written in strict secrecy by his lawyer. He carried it back out with him after lunch.
Cheneys proposal had become a military order from the commander in chief. Foreign terrorism suspects held by the United States were stripped of access to any court -- civilian or military, domestic or foreign. They could be confined indefinitely without charges and would be tried, if at all, in closed "military commissions."

Echinacea - Conflicting Research Shows It Has Value

They found it decreased the odds of developing a cold by 58% and the duration of colds by a day-and-a-half.
The results in The Lancet Infectious Diseases conflict with other studies that show no beneficial effect.
Researchers, led by Dr Craig Coleman from the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy, combined the results of 14 different studies on Echinaceas anti-cold properties.
In one of the 14 studies the researchers reviewed, echinacea was taken alongside vitamin C. This combination reduced cold incidence by 86%.
When echinacea was used alone it reduced cold incidence by 65%.
The researchers report said: "With over 200 viruses capable of causing the common cold, echinacea could have modest effect against rhinovirus but marked effects against other viruses."

CN TOWER - the worlds tollest building in a completely new light
clipped by: yorkville
clippers remarks: Well... this will be quite new dimention of night in Torontos skyline

The specs sound like theyre from the latest ad for LCD televisions: 16.7 million colours, Chromacore technology, digital control.
Over the past week, the CN Tower has been testing its new $2.5 million lighting system after dusk. Ribbons of colour have spilled down the 553-metre-tall structure, ebbing and flowing like water.
Because the computer-controlled system is so flexible, virtually any look is possible. So, depending on when one happens to glance up, the tower can appear as refined as a clean sculpture ? or as garish as a midway.
The CN Tower news release stresses that the system is efficient ? using 10 per cent less energy than the most recent setup, and consuming about 60 per cent less power than was needed to fully light the tower in the 1990s. In other words, David Suzuki wont be knocking on the porch to change the light bulbs.

Scientists work to purify Earths water
clipped by: dorine1722
EAST LANSING, Mich., June 25 (UPI) -- Two U.S. professors are leading an international effort to find ways of purifying the worlds waters using membrane-based technologies.
"Membrane-based technologies selectively remove things such as chemicals and particles from water," said Voice, a professor of civil and environmental engineering. "They are analogous to filters, except they remove things that are smaller and separate on the basis of chemistry and size. Our project is looking at developing new types of membranes and membrane systems that perform better in water treatment applications."
Membranes can produce ultra-pure water, removing nearly all impurities.
"They are used in some places to turn sea water into fresh water," Voice said. "The challenge is to do this cost effectively, and we seek to do this by improving their performance."

"NIR ROSEN, JOURNALIST: Well, it already did. We created a civil war. This is actually outrageous. Outgoing U.N. envoy to the Middle East peace process, Alvaro De Soto, himself accused the U.S. of fomenting a civil war by training, funding and arming Fatah thugs and inserting them into Gaza to destabilize the Hamas government. We never gave them a chance. They were democratically elected in an election that was widely recognized as free and fair, even by former President Jimmy Carter. And then the U.S., along with Israel, Jordan and Egypt trained these gangs and actually put them in Gaza to overthrow the Hamas government. And, of course, its actually backfired and Fatah was overthrown. But all youre going to do is isolate and further radicalize Hamas. And so when you say that the U.S. is seeking to ease tensions in the Middle East, I disagree with you. These are tensions that the U.S. actually created in the Middle East.

The Nebra disc is emblazoned with symbols of the Sun, Moon and stars and said by some to be 3,600 years old.

Rise of man theory ?out by 400,000 years?
clipped by: invictus
clippers remarks: A very controversial, unorthodox and exciting new theory on the history of humanity. Professor Helmut Ziegert from Germany, a very experienced and bright archaeologist, comes up with new findings that could shake all we know about the distant past of homo sapiens and the starting point of the Neolitic Age, which was the beginning of our civilization.
Sean Kingsley, an archaeologist and the managing editor of Minerva, said: ?This research is nothing less than a quantum leap in our understanding of Man?s intellectual and social history. For archaeology it?s as radical as finding life on Mars.
?As a veteran of over 81 archaeological surveys and excavations . . . Ziegert is nothing if not scientifically cautious, which makes the current revelation all the more exciting.?
Rise of man theory ?out by 400,000 years?

Our earliest ancestors gave up hunter-gathering and took to a settled life up to 400,000 years earlier than previously thought, according to controversial research.
The accepted timescale of Man?s evolution is being challenged by a German archaeologist who claims to have found evidence that Homo erectus ? mankind?s early ancestor, who migrated from Africa to Asia and Europe ? began living in settled communities long before the accepted time of 10,000 years ago.
The point at which settlement actually took place is the first critical stage in humanity?s cultural development.
Helmut Ziegert, of the Institute of Archaeology at Hamburg University, says that the evidence can be found at excavated sites in North and East Africa, in the remains of stone huts and tools created by upright man for fishing and butchery.

Chimpanzees show alturistic traits

clippers remarks: Interesting how they will help a human.
LONDON, June 24 (UPI) -- Chimpanzees possess the ability for interspecific altruism, researchers in Germany have found.
Altruism -- helping another with no expectation of personal reward -- was once thought to be a uniquely human trait, The Times of London reported. However, in recent experiments, chimpanzees repeatedly helped humans who appeared to be struggling to reach a stick within the animals enclosure.
The chimps, which were interacting with humans who had not given them food, spontaneously helped the humans by reaching across and helping them get the stick.
Anthropologists cite altruism as a key to developing civilized and complex societies. Although altruism has been observed in many species, this recent experiment is special because it shows ability for one species to be altruistic with another species, the Times said.

LONDON, June 24 (UPI) -- A scientific study of British students eating habits has found eating ham and cheese for breakfast can significantly improve cognitive functioning.
The study headed up by psychology professor David Benton of Wales Swansea University found the traditional German breakfast can aid in cognitive functions like memory and attention levels, The Sunday Times of London said.
"It is all down to the glucose release of the breakfast into the bloodstream. The slower the release, the better the pupils performed," Benton said of his studys findings.
Bentons group monitored the eating habits and cognitive performance of 6- and 7-year-olds to determine the effect of a well-balanced breakfast.
Bentons group also found meals with slow-releasing glucose levels helped children stay physically fit and curbed obesity by limiting ones appetite.

My own first-born is old enough to join and his step-father is in the Army and has been to Iraq 2x. We are both encouraging him to stay out of the military.
WASHINGTON ? The number of blacks joining the military has plunged by more than one-third since the Afghanistan and Iraq wars began. Other job prospects are soaring and relatives of potential recruits increasingly are discouraging them from joining the armed services.
According to data obtained by The Associated Press, the decline covers all four military services for active duty recruits. The drop is even more dramatic when National Guard and Reserve recruiting is included.
The findings reflect the growing unpopularity of the wars, particularly among family members and other adults who exert influence over high school and college students considering the military as a place to serve their country, further their education or build a career.
Marine Commandant Gen. James T. Conway agreed that the bloodshed in Iraq _ where more than 3,540 U.S. troops have died _ is the biggest deterrent for prospective recruits.

Why Do Dads Kill?

Police arent saying why Christopher Vaughn allegedly shot his wife, Kimberly, and three kids in the familys red SUV on June 14.
To the psychopathic minds of such killers, wives and children "are less than people. Theyre something to get rid of," Philpin said.
It takes an extreme psychopath to kill his own children. But such killers dont really love their kids. They just play the role of the loving father.
"As long as the child is useful, you parade them around," Brown said. "When theyre in the way, you kill them."
Often, family killers dont have criminal records. "But they have a record of psychopathic behavior," Brown said.
They are manipulators. Theyre narcissistic, filled with grandiose thoughts. And theyre pathologic liars who blame everyone but themselves for their problems.
But theyre usually not insane, said Dr. Louis Kraus, a forensic psychiatrist at Rush University Medical Center. Unlike insane killers, they know right from wrong.

Released crocs turn protectors
clipped by: arifsali
CALCUTTA, India ? Dozens of crocodiles bred in captivity in eastern India have been enlisted to protect their endangered counterparts in the wild and are being released in forests to scare away poachers, authorities said on Monday.
Illegal fishing in mangrove forests and habitat destruction in the states of Orissa and West Bengal had led to a steep fall in crocodile numbers, from several thousand a century ago to less than 100 in the early 1970s, they said.
But the same reptiles were breeding rapidly in captivity. Orissas Bhitarkanika sanctuary has more than 1,400 crocodiles now.
"The swelling number of released crocodiles in the wild is working as a deterrent and keeping people away from the mangrove as villagers are more cautious before venturing into the forests," said Rathin Banerjee, a senior wildlife official.
Wildlife sanctuaries in the region are threatened by poachers and villagers foraging for wood and forest produce.

The class divide between Facebook and Myspace

MySpace is about teenage rebellion; ugliness and defiantly folded arms. Facebook is much more popular among those of college age and older - its more grown up, and looking at it isnt like pouring acid into your eyeballs.
So its timely that Danah Boyd, one of the most incisive researchers looking at societies on the web, has come up with a paper on the class structures of Facebook and MySpace. In essence, she says good middle class kids use Facebook, while the working classes use MySpace. In many respects it is one of those things that puts what you already know into context, but its a worthwhile read.
But aside from all of the boggle-eyed social butterflies who spend hours each day updating their profile and the hand-rubbing money men (including those who enjoy stating the obvious) the real interest for me lies in who uses it, and why.

black + in the center of the picture. After a short period of time, all the pink dots will slowly disappear, and you will only see a green dot rotating if youre lucky! Its amazing how our brain works.
There really is no green dot, and the pink ones really dont disappear. This should be proof enough, we dont always see what we think we see.

Spider Webs Help Plant Surveys
clipped by: dorine1722
A study of pollen captured in spider webs of southern and central Yunnan, China, shows that the sticky webs do a darned good job at capturing and hanging onto pollen grains from local plants. The method may be useful in plant surveys worldwide.
"The [type] of pollen and spores identified from the spider webs can reflect the vegetation of the sampling site," confirms Cheng-Sen Li of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Beijing Museum of Natural History.
The pollen sampling technique comes as a surprise to at least one spider expert, who had only heard of one other pollen-spider connection.

Happy Birthday George Orwell

Its the birthday of the novelist and essayist George Orwell, (books by this author) born Eric Arthur Blair in Bengal, India (1903). He came from a middle class family, but managed to win a scholarship to a distinguished boarding school, where most of his classmates were upper class kids. He did not fit in at all. He said, "In a world where the prime necessities were money, titled relatives, athleticism, tailor-made clothes, neatly brushed hair, a charming smile, I was no good."

The unfortunate death of language
clipped by: jillsodt
clippers remarks: I love language and learning new words. While I understand and support the general idea to speak plainly in common situation, I also hope that we do not eventually lose the ability for language to be extremely descriptive and expressive.
Vocabulary: Are we losing our lexicon?
The last days of long words! The sunset of syntactical surplusage!
You dont need a vocabulary to see the point: A home, a city or a society where people appreciate and share their vocabularies, where they take public pleasure in using language, is a place with a future where the lights are on.
"My advice to people is to get pleasure out of explaining things clearly. You have to give up things you love. But then you can have a really great connection with people."
"I dont think there is any goal in having a vocabulary," Thomas Delworth says from his perch toward the end of his rich spoken and written life. "I think it is its own reward. I cant give you a cost-effectiveness breakdown. You simply have a somewhat larger grasp of this vast empire you might command."

Giant Penguins - watch out!

Giant Penguins Once Roamed Peru Desert, Fossils Show
Penguins about the size of humans roamed South America some 35 million years ago, and they didnt need ice to survive.
Thats the result of a new study by North Carolina State University paleontologist Julia Clarke and her colleagues. (See a picture gallery of the giant penguin finds.)
The study, which appears in this weeks issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, unveils two new species of giant penguins from fossils unearthed in Perus Atacama Desert.
Todays penguins are cold-adapted and therefore at grave risk from global warming, she said, but the new fossils suggest that hasnt always been true.
The new study describes two new species of penguins from fossils, including the first complete skull from an ancient giant penguin.
That species, which the authors say lived in Peru about 36 million years ago, is the third largest penguin known and stood about 4.5 feet (1.5 meters) tall.

Breaking News: Jessie Davis-Cutts and Ferrell appear in court today
clipped by: flagranny
Bobby Cutts and Myisha Ferrell appeared in court today at 3pm
As I watched the hearing of Cutts and Ferrell and this is what came out of this hearing:
The sister and mother were in the court room on front from about 15 feet from Bobby Cutts as he appeared for his arraignment. Preliminary hearing set for July 2nd at 1:00p.m. with Cutts bond set at $5million. At the preliminary hearing it will then be determined if they have enough evidence to back up charges to hold Cutts and if so does it warrants the $5million bond.
Myisha Ferrell?s preliminary hearing was also set for July 2nd at 2:00pm and her bond was set at $500 thousand. Her attorney asked that Ferrell not be approached by any law enforcement without an attorney present.
At this point the charges are at the State level and not Federal. They still continue to say the case is still under investigation.

Supreme Court nixes suit over faith-based plan
The 5-4 high court decision bars taxpayers from challenging initiative

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court ruled Monday that ordinary taxpayers cannot challenge a White House initiative that helps religious charities get a share of federal money.
The 5-4 decision blocks a lawsuit by a group of atheists and agnostics against eight Bush administration officials including the head of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.
The taxpayers group, the Freedom From Religion Foundation Inc., objected to government conferences in which administration officials encourage religious charities to apply for federal grants.

Researchers may remake Neanderthal DNA
clipped by: dorine1722
clippers remarks: Cant wait for the results.
WASHINGTON - Researchers studying Neanderthal DNA say it should be possible to construct a complete genome of the ancient hominid despite the degradation of the DNA over time.
There is also hope for reconstructing the genome of the mammoth and cave bear, according to a research team led by Svante Paabo of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany.
Debate has raged for years about whether there is any relationship between Neanderthals and modern humans. Some researchers believe that Neanderthals were simply replaced by early modern humans, while others argue the two groups may have interbred.
Sequencing the genome of Neanderthals, who lived in Europe until about 30,000 years ago, could shed some light on that question.
In studies of Neanderthals, cave bear and mammoth, a majority of the DNA recovered was that of microorganisms that colonized the tissues after death, the researchers said.

A judge ruled Monday that no pair of pants is worth $54 million, rejecting a lawsuit that took a dry cleaners promise of "Satisfaction Guaranteed" to its most litigious extreme.

Roy L. Pearson became a worldwide symbol of legal abuse by seeking jackpot justice from a simple complaint -- that a neighborhood dry cleaners lost the pants from a new suit and tried to give him a pair that were not his.
"A reasonable consumer would not interpret Satisfaction Guaranteed to mean that a merchant is required to satisfy a customers unreasonable demands," the judge wrote.
